Second Creek Farm near Spy Rock, Crabtree Falls and the Appalachian Trail
About this farm stay rental
Classic Virginia white clapboard farmhouse - on land farmed by the same family since 1864, with views of Spy Rock and Sugar Tree Hollow. This century farm is situated on what is considered one of the most beautiful landholdings in the area. Native trout streams abound on the property - the pond is spring-fed, with a dock and Adirondack chairs for sitting and relaxing. There are marked on-farm trails (with trail maps available) so that you can hike and never leave the farm if you don't want to. The farm house with its exposed chestnut beams, creamy white walls and yellow pine floors is quite simply amazing. An old hickory wood stove dominates the open living room and promises warmth on chilly nights. The kitchen with its vaulted ceilings, skylight and old fashioned pantry is sweet. Vaulted ceilings and large bay windows in the open master bedroom give things an open air feeling with views of the mountains and streams. There is even a clawfoot tub in the master bathroom overlooking the pond. White rocking chairs line the front porch and remind us of how uncomplicated things used to be in the old days. A fire pit is available for guests as well.

We love the Three Ridges/ Crabtree Falls area (Montebello) area of VA. It's probably our favorite place. We heard it was supposed to snow about 4-6 inches. So we headed up to Second Creek. Sadly we did not get any snow at all BUT we did get an entire lazy day to hang out in the house. We watched birds (SO many birds). We fed Shirley and Ben. Who are incredibly sweet. And even sweeter once we fed them apples. We explored the property. Once the weather cleared we did a little hiking down at Three Ridges and then continued being lazy. Drinking hot chocolate by the wood stove, playing board games, spending time with each other. It was really great. We are already talking about the next time we can make it up there.

I am not sure I can put into words how incredible this farm is. My aunt and I stayed for a few days it is like stepping back in time with modern comforts. Plenty of space inside and out the gardens are so sweet the greenhouse is beautiful would be so nice to sit in in the winter and drink tea. Loved Shirley and Ben gave them carrots every evening. Plenty of hikes on the property, fishing. Thank you so much Luther and Catherine you did an incredible job.

Such a peaceful, serene location. We all loved the house, the view, the quiet, the farm animals ... and the hammock was a favorite spot of mine. Very close to area hiking, too.

This is a nice home with a lot of character in a beautiful setting. It has everything you need. We had a great time.

Where do I start, the home was clean and beautifully decorated but kept the integrity wood details and farm charm. The farm WOW, we hiked the property, enjoyed the pond, the birds(delightfully entertaining and beautiful), the porch❤️❤️❤️ and loved talking to and giving treats to Ben and Shirley. Luther, owner, called to make sure everything was good and If we had any question or in need of anything. We enjoyed the binders full of history about the farm and town sights. Enjoyed watching the cows in the pasture and the stars at night felt so close you could touch them and we saw so many shooting stars 😊Thank you for sharing your home, we are already planning next year to the farm. Full 5 stars. ❤️

We had a wonderful time at Second Creek! This is a gorgeous farmhouse and beautiful property. We enjoyed hiking at Spy Rock and Crabtree Falls, stream “swimming”, horseback riding and more. Absolute best part of the visit: feeding Ben (horse) and Shirley (donkey)!!

We’ve been visiting second creek farm for years now - haven’t found anywhere quite like it for peace and tranquility. We were impressed this time around with the new touches to the interior - the house has been recently decorated and looks great. And of course the surrounding fields and forest are as lovely as ever. I could spend all day watching the hummingbirds and marvelling at the fireflies after dark. Beautiful. We’ll be back!

It was a great place to bring kids and let them enjoy nature. There is a ton to do around the area which made it a great home base for day activities. I highly recommend going if you're looking for a beautiful place to enjoy the outdoors.

Stayed last year mid May with our toddler and wanted to do it again but with our 15yr old. She loved it as much as we did and can't wait to come back for a third time. The Cash family have a beautiful place and we are so blessed they share it.

This property is amazing. Our family is so refreshed and made so many great memories there. Clearly the hosts take great pride in making it an incredible spot for enjoying nature and experiencing peace. We can not wait to return!!! Any guest interested must know the farm house is quite open and all noises and sounds can be heard throughout. My sweet fussy kids had a hard night falling asleep the first night but after enjoying the home, animals, and getting used to farm life, they crashed quickly despite the open floor plan. Truly a vrbo gem!!

We loved this historic farmhouse, it’s quaint feel, serene location and everything it has to offer. We did the caverns, crabtree falls and the animal safari. None were a terribly far drive. On the property we enjoyed walks, checking out the greenhouse, and most of all Shirley the donkey and Ben the old horse. The furnishings and antiques in the home were beautiful and much appreciated by all, from ages 4 to 44. Thank you for opening this little piece of your family’s history for all to enjoy. We hope we’ll be back again!

My husband and I spent spring break with our grandchildren at the farm. We enjoyed watching the animals both within the fences and in the wild. We were able to let the children fish in the pond and they caught their first fish. The house is charming. The perfect combination of rustic and modern. It’s stocked with all of the essentials. The hosts were helpful and kind. Be sure to stop by the General Store and Gertie’s while you’re there. You won’t find nicer people anywhere! Overall, it was an amazing, relaxing experience that I am very happy to have had and highly recommend to anyone who wants to spend quality time with loved ones!

Second Creek Farm is a special place! This was our second visit in the last year and we plan to make it back again soon. The house is great and there's so much to do outdoors. Ben the horse and Shirley the donkey made the visit extra memorbale for our kids. It was fantastic getting off the grid and enjoying a slower pace on this perfect property!

We had a lovely stay at this beautiful property. Our teen boys loved exploring around and visiting the animals. The home doesn't have a lot of privacy as it is very open, so keep that in mind if traveling with other people. We look forward to coming again.

Cute farmhouse in the country. We enjoyed the horse and donkey that live on the property. Great views.
Close to many hikes. Amazing stargazing and birdwatching. Property is well maintained, mondernized, well stocked and clean.

We had a wonderful time at the farm during our weeklong stay over Thanksgiving. Beautiful farmhouse, great hikes, fantastic stargazing and amazing scenery made a great week for my husband, daughter and myself (plus two old friends we had not seen in 3 years). The dining room was picture perfect for our Thanksgiving meal, and being able to 'unplus' was incredible for all of us. A big thanks to Luther and Catherine for a great experience.

What a great place to stay! So quiet and serene, a perfect place to recharge. We’ve decided to make it a yearly retreat! Thank you for making your farm available it’s such a treasure!

My wife and 3 yo son had a fantastic stay at Second Creek! The property was clean, remote, and had everything we wanted in a place. My wife loved the cows, as well as Ben the horse and Shirley the donkey. We just wish we’d brought more apples and carrots for them to snack on.
The property was in close proximity to many hikes but honestly we didn’t want to leave our home for the week. The Montebello store was minutes away for snacks and drinks and we frequented it.
Overall we loved our stay and cannot wait to return!

From the second we walked in it was so comfortable and relaxing. The house and property was extremely clean. Will the low temps at night, we had the woodburning stove going as we read on the comfortable couch. During the day we walked the gorgeous property, had some herbs from the greenhouse, pet Ben and Shirley and just relaxed. Make sure you read the history of the house- everywhere we went we said we were staying at Luther and Cathrine's house and the whole community knew how incredible the spot was. Also be sure to go down to Vesuvius to eat at Gerties or buy local meats from there.
If you're into biking, fly fishing, hiking etc-- there's excellent opportunities around the property and area.
Thanks again for the incredible getaway! We will be back again!

Despite bringing my nearly 6 year old and 2 year old on vacation with my husband and I, and the inherent chaos they expound, the peacefulness of the surroundings and the simple charm of the farmhouse ensured that I was able to relax and find calm on this trip.
The house has just about everything one could need, including fresh herbs and some Swiss chard from the greenhouse that graced our plates one evening. The children really enjoyed Ben and Shirley, and watching the cows graze nearby. And the hike on the property was a low effort way to get them used to some hiking experiences. The drive to the house is beautiful, but be prepared for several miles of twists and turns! A note for those traveling with young kids who nap, the house has an open layout so there are no doors to close off for a quiet space. We made do by planning nap time around long car drives. Other than that minor adjustment to our kid routine (which hopefully will be a non-issue on our next visit!), the place is perfect and special, and Luther and Catherine were helpful and gracious hosts. I highly recommend!

We had a great stay at Second Creek Farm. The hosts were very responsive and called to check in on us the second day and provide helpful information.
The farm is very convenient to some nice local hikes, and has plenty of room to roam on the property.
The house is rustic and open (no walls between beds), but nicely updated and furnished. Everything was very comfortable and easy to maneuver (watch your head if you're over 6 feet tall).
The animals were very friendly and will walk right up to say hello.

My family and I had a wonderful time at the farm. Shirley and Ben were the highlight of our stay and we look forward to come back to enjoy all that the farm has to offer.
It is a great place to disconnect so we can reconnect as a family.

This was out second visit to the cabin and we enjoyed the great escape from the city! The kids loved the open space to play, explore and see the animals. We hope to be able to come back again soon!

This beautiful country home is nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains. With this picturesque landscape, you couldn't ask for anything more.
Each morning we had our coffee on the dock overlooking the trout pond. It was so relaxing watching the water and hearing the birds sing in the nearby trees. Shirley the donkey and Ben the horse greeted us each time we walked by their pasture. They are a sweet welcoming committee.
The farm is located 3 miles from Crabtree Falls, which is a gorgeous , fun hike. We got an opportunity to meet Luther, the homeowner. He graciously got us pointed in the right direction of Spy Rock which is another great hike.
Some things to do while staying at the farm:
We took a day trip to Staunton. It is a charming town with restaurants, shops, theatres etc... If you go to Crozet you can visit the Artisan Depot and be sure to stop at Sal's for their pizza and Caesar salad!

My husband and I came here to celebrate our 25th anniversary and my birthday. This place was perfect. The characteristics of the home was amazing. We felt like we stepped back in time and was able to slow down and truly enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.

This was a wonderful place to meet my daughter in law for hiking and relaxing.
The kitchen was well stocked, clean and had plenty of storage. Everything inside the home was very thoughtfully designed and comfortable for guests.
The rockers on the porch were my favorite. Hummingbirds, baby bunnies and ducklings joined us each morning on the lawn. It was great to meet Luther, the owner, on our final morning.. Thanks Catherine...We'll be back!

Quiet get away
Everything about this trip was pleasant. Booking it and communicating with the owners was easy and quick. The home is sweet and delightful and has everything you could ever need. Was able to get Wi-Fi majority of the time to stay in touch although we enjoyed being off the grid at times. Quick travel to certain areas of sightseeing and great for hiking. Loved the area.

When I looked at the pictures of the property I thought it looked like a nice place to stay, but the pictures just do not do it justice. If you are a history lover, you will feel like you walked back in time- its such a cool home. We were ooing and ahhing over all of the cool details as we moved from room to room. It's decorated so beautifully, and they've really thought of everything. I loved cooking on the antique stove! Some of the locals were surprised that we found the local swimming hole- thanks for the inside scoop ;)! Highly recommended!

Unmatched
My family and I stayed over 4th of July weekend. There was plenty to do to keep my 3 kids busy (12, 11, 11.) Everything was clean, organized, and thought of (labeled, available.) The stars at night were so beautiful and bright, the animals on the farm were so fun to watch, the county store is just around the corner. I absolutely loved being gifted access to the farm greenhouse, and took advantage of fresh grown herbs and vegetables. The view from the front porch was like stepping back in time. If you are considering renting but hesitating for any reason - do not! Everything was perfect and even better than described.

Rest!
I took my fiancé here for a Father's Day trip and an opportunity to get away. I didn't want there to be too many options to move around nor easily connect with the multiple things we do daily. It was perfect! He always talks about resting on a farm so being able to see the animals roaming about was phenomenal. He rocked on that porch for hours and walked through the grass barefoot. We were able to connect when needed by wifi but not overwhelmed with the phones constantly going off as usual. The restaurant at the bottom of the mountain was so welcoming we went their twice and cooked the other times. If you don't mind the peace and quiet, a spider or two and bare windows (no curtains accept for the bathroom) but your miles away and honestly we only saw two riders the entire time we were there near the house! He wants to go back with the guys for their monthly rest and relaxation retreat.

Serene
We had an amazing weekend on the property. The photos cannot accurately portray the peace and beauty of this location. Crabtree falls was a fun day trip, Green church watering hole just down the road as well was a blast. We enjoyed catching a few fish and just walking around the farm. Yes it is an open concept older home with only one interior door in the downstairs bathroom but we had two couples and made it out just fine. Sleeping on the pull out bed was very comfortable and neither my wife or myself had any issues getting great sleep. Looking forward to coming back.
