About this cottage rental
The Gatehouse is a National Trust listed property located at Medlow Bath in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, approximately 115km west of Sydney and is accessible by road or rail. The Gatehouse is a self-contained sandstone railway cottage, now privately owned, providing self-catering accommodation for short breaks or longer.
In the mid 19th Century the NSW Government Railways undertook construction of a railway across the Blue Mountains to the western regions of NSW. The Gatehouse is one of twelve identical stone cottages built to house level-crossing gatekeepers and their families. The Gatehouse at Medlow Bath was built in 1867 and is a picturesque landmark in the district.
The Gatehouse is within an easy stroll to Medlow Bath railway station and the Hydro Majestic Hotel. Medlow Bath is situated midway between the famous lookouts, walks and tourist attractions of Katoomba and Blackheath.
Accommodation is for 1 - 4 people and includes:
- 2 bedrooms (the master bedroom contains a double bed and the 2nd bedroom contains a single bed and a single size trundle bed)
- Lounge room with open fire place
- Kitchen
- Dining room
- Bathroom (featuring a heated floor and claw-foot hip bath)
The Gatehouse is equipped with cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, electric cooktop and oven, refrigerator, a sound system (Bluetooth, CD player and digital/FM radio), bedding (pillows, blankets and quilts), electric blankets, tablecloth, tea towels and firewood. Bed linen hire (sheets and pillowcases) and towels is available upon request for bookings made at least one week in advance.
Road Directions:
From Sydney follow the M4 Motorway west to Katoomba/Blue Mountains. At the foot hills of the Blue Mountains the motorway become the Great Western Highway. Medlow Bath is the next township after Katoomba.
At Medlow Bath, do not follow the Great Western Highway over the railway tunnel. Instead continue straight ahead onto a side road. This side road is Station Steet. If you miss the exit for the side road, don't panic, turn left at the traffic lights and then right into Station Street.
Rail Service:
Medlow Bath is a station on the Blue Mountains line. Timetables are available from the Transport NSW website.

Quaint and effort made to blend the authentic with the modern. Trains as neighbours were fun although some may describe it otherwise.
The place was quite dusty. Plenty of heaters. Some local knowledge, info, brochures etc could be helpful.
Info re the house would be both interesting and helpful. Couldn’t get front door opened.
Appreciated amount of wood left as it was rainy and foggy whole time we were there.
Arrival instructions that include dirt road and no through road sign would be helpful.
So much potential. We did though enjoy our short stay.

It was a destination wish list, as my wife's great grandmother was the Gatekeeper for 20+ years from 1882. There were eleven children in the family, so we're not sure where they slept.
The cottage building appears to be original, but the interior has been updated, but sympatheticly, with some modern additions like electricity and plumbing. Make sure you read the local historical books suppled. The nightime goods trains would be an acquired experience.
Overall we enjoyed the two days.

This rare piece of history made for an amazing place to spend some time. It is a great reflection of the era that it was built, and like staying in a living museum. No TV or Wi-Fi meant more reading, which was lovely.
There was obvious traffic and train noise, but that's why it was built there in the first place, all those years ago.
Very special indeed.

We had a lovely stay at the cottage despite the awful weather. Everything has been thoughtfully done and we had everything we needed.

Difficult to find the words to explain how much I enjoyed our tiny 2 night stay at the Gatehouse cottage. I have watched the cottage since I was a child, then it sold in the 1970s, and again a few decades later. And to find that now I can enjoy it fully occasionally is magic. Each trip across the mountains we would drive up and inspect it, even the bathroom extension. And now it is presented with all convenient inclusions, even in winter. Perfect sunshiny days and chilly nights in front of the fire. The cottage is central, and the towns and sights seem closer together now, or am I old?! Yep, and can't wait to bring the grandkids up for a weekend of history and snugness. Thank you so very much for opening it up to be enjoyed by all. Loved every minute of our stay.

Perfect stay for the week with my family. Love the old school charm, and being able to have a fire in January thanks to the mountains weather…34 and sunny one day, 13 and rainy the next. Easy access to all the local tourist stuff and lots of awesome hikes within a few minutes drive. Highly recommend!!! And yes there are trains, and trucks, but the positives far outweigh any negatives.

A sympathetically renovated and furnished cosy cottage which provides some insight into life 150 years ago. (The sandstone cottage was built in 1867). With mod cons such as a lovely bathroom accessed via a glass walkway) it was most enjoyable. No wifi meant a chance to slip around from the 21st century. Some road and rail noise but lovely nonetheless.

Quaint cottage with an impressive log fire. Enjoyable for couples or small families as one double and one single on property. Cottage has a great garden to relax in.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The gatehouse is a beautiful little cottage in a great location. Trains can be a little loud.

My partner bought a painting of this home years ago, then discovered that it was available for rental and as she said "we're staying here". What a cottage, cold outside, heated inside, modern bathroom with heated floor, a kitchen with all you need, no T.V or internet, but didn't come here to watch t.v, restaurants and shopping ?, Blackheath 10 mins up the road and Katoomba 6 mins down the road, or walk to the Hydro Majestic, the trains are just outside the house, after the first you don't hear them or don't care, it was a fantastic long weekend for us both, would highly recommend and we will be back.

The bed could be a bit better and the firewood cut a bit smaller to suit the fireplace but overall a nice cottage and enjoyable.

Unique, historic and cosy
A privilege to have experienced staying in such an historic and attractive sandstone cottage. This is a railway gatekeepers cottage so noise from trains and nearby highway was expected. A common experience with the linear residential development hugging the transport lines in the blue mountains. Location and garden setting was excellent. Wendy has many thoughtful additions within. Weather was favourable and we made the most of walks at nearby Blackheath, Katoomba and Leura. Accommodation description was accurate. No TV or microwave was a plus, enabling the atmosphere and ambiance of the cottage to be enjoyed. Thank you Wendy for providing the opportunity of such a unique experience.

Quaint historical cottage
The Medlow Bath cottage was exactly as described. A quaint stone cottage oozing with history and ambience. The property owner was quick to respond to questions and helpful local insight. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

The Gatekeepers Cottage is a delight!
The owners have taken great care to preserve the history, while modernising for comfort. The sandstone walls, the fire place, original-style furniture. The garden is a delight you should explore, filled with flowers and fruit trees. A hidden surprise is the book collection, from Jasper Fronde to Ian Fleming and Aurther Conan Doyle. Stay here - you won’t regret it.

Enjoyed property but some limitations
We found the property dusty and appreciate the fact due to the age of the property that it may be hard to clean.
There is a leak in the cold water tap in the bathroom. The shower is a really bad design as water goes everywhere. There was no mop to mop it up nor extra towels provided to mop/dry it up. It might be a good idea to provide a dryer so people can dry towels, clothes etc.
We also found there was nothing to hang anything up.

Beautiful little cottage and garden
Enjoyed our 3 days, everything was as described and the cottage comfortable and cosy. There are plenty of heating options if needed. The road and rail noise is as expected, but staying in such a historic cottage is well worth it. The garden was also nice place to be. Thank you Wendy.

Beautiful Cottage
Our family had a wonderful time at the Gatehouse in Medlow Bath. The cottage is warm, cosy and full of beautiful period features. The location is great- close enough to Katoomba for convenience but far enough away to feel a bit isolated from the crowds. We loved the history of the place and would absolutely love to stay here again.

New beginings
It was always a dream to stay here and Wendy has made it possible.
The cottage was full of old world charm. You can see the effort taken to make your stay authentic.
We catered for ourselves and everything we need was provided.
The bathroom is modern and we relaxed it the claw foot bath.
The linen provided was fresh and the bed has that old world squeaky charm.
...and yes folks...there are trains! but its called the "Gatehouse" for a reason...
All in all, we loved it and thank you again Wendy for making this piece of history available.

The charm of yesteryear meets modern convenience
Those with an appreciation for how life was lived in generations past should look no further than this little slice of history during their stay in the blue mountains. The cottage and grounds stand just as they must have when founded in 1867, as testified by an array of documents, pictures, and books to be found inside.
Bedrooms and living areas were understated but functional and comfortable, with the kitchen and bathroom upgrades more than offsetting any of the trivial inconveniences that were simply part of life when this cottage was laid out. The railway and highway are both close by, incurring the noise that necessarily brings with it during peak hours, but also making travel to either Blackheath or Katoomba a breeze.
All correspondence was prompt, professional, and attentive, with a comprehensive guide preventing any potential hiccups along the way.
All told, the cottage should be regarded as an attraction in itself, and the fact that you can stay in it an amazing bonus!

Great place to stay
My family had a lovely time staying at the gatehouse. The gatehouse is well located to explore many of the blue mountains attractions. We enjoyed staying in a historic house which had so many interesting features, and we enjoyed having a fire each night. The house was clean and we had all the facilities we needed for a week away. Wendy the owner was very helpful and friendly.

Wonderfully liveable, original heritage cottage.
We were overwhelmed by the ambiance and original features of this old cottage. The bathroom is a fully modernised add-on and happily all features were very warm with a log fire and electric heating on some freezing cold and windy days. Excellent old jigsaws (and no TV)!
Extra bonus were the trackworks with no trains at all running over the weekend - otherwise is 'atmospherically' very close the the train line.
Easy walking distance to great coffee, food, the historic hydro majestic hotel and walking tracks into the Blue Mountains National Park.
Supermarkets, antiques and a huge range of restaurants are a few Km walk or drive away.
Would love to stay again with this accommodating hostess who conscientiously warned us about the planned trackworks.

This is my second stay. Loved it!
What a wonderful place to escape the world around us and step back in time. The fireplace was certainly on and the whole experience was like something out of a historical novel. Wendy was a great host as always. The cottage was clean, cosy and a great experience.

The Gatehouse Medlow Bath
To stay in the 150 year old sandstone Gatehouse was a unique experience. It has been tastefully furnished mostly using antique or traditional furniture, and is very comfortable, albeit still cold with the fire and heaters at this time of the year. Wendy was very helpful. We found it strange to have to supply our own linen, but were happy enough to do so. The inclusion of bedside tables and reading lamps and somewhere to store clothes or place a suitcase off the floor in the second bedroom would have been good. We would not recommend this location for more than three adults.
