About this cottage rental
YES, WE REALLY ARE THAT CLOSE TO THE BEACH AND WE TOOK PICTURES TO PROVE IT! So be sure to check out the pictures in our photo album. These pictures, together with our owner's map of Union Pier say it all--from our front door, we are less than a two-minute walk to the beach. (view map, then magnify a few times). We have DEEDED access to our beach through the Luna Gowdy Beach Association. Our beach is private for the residents of our small subdivision of about 50 homes. The designated beach area is about 300 feet of lake frontage, so there is plenty of room. Our beach is seldom crowded, although it is crowded for holiday weeks, like the 4th of July and Labor Day.
Another nice feature regarding the beach is that our unit is located on the lake side of Lakeshore Road. You never have to cross that road or any other road to access the beach. Our cozy condo/cottage (585 sq. ft.) is one of only nine units, surrounding a spacious courtyard. Our cottage is attached to another cottage. We are a corner unit and we share a wall on one side with our next-door neighbor.
When we renovated our unit, and we wanted to keep all of its 1930's charm, but we wanted to add some contemporary comforts too.We loved all of our cottage's wooden, wrap-around casement windows, but we added plenty of skylights as well.
Our full kitchen is complete with a GE dishwasher, Quartz countertops, a brand-new Whirlpool fridge, and a new microwave. Be sure to check out our photos.
When it came to the bathroom we looked for a simple vintage design for replacing the fixtures, but we couldn't resist installing a Jacuzzi bathtub. We furnished our cottage with mostly beautiful antiques that we have collected over the years. Most are over a hundred years old.
Even though it's cooler by the lake, we thought central air conditioning was a must for when the temperatures pushed too high. To eliminate those inconvenient trips to the laundromat, we installed a brand new LG combination washer/dryer (locating it in a bedroom closet, hiding it from view, but making it very, very handy). Doing laundry now is so much easier. However, we kept our outdoor clothesline up for those who still like to air-dry their wet bathing suits and beach towels.
We wanted fast WiFi, so we installed Comcast Internet along with Comcast Cable TV. We have a small DVD library, but we also encourage guests to bring their own DVDs for special movies and programs that they or their kids enjoy seeing. We installed the TV in the bedroom, due to all of the glare and reflections coming from our wrap-around windows and skylights in the living area. The bedroom location makes TV viewing so much easier and enjoyable.
We also have a hooked-up, Weber gas grill right outside our back door---no propane needed! Now, how convenient is that?!
Our cottage rental includes TWO parking spaces (designated on-street parking) and a huge outdoor common area (it is actually to the side of our cottage, about 35 paces from our back door) for picnicking and ball-playing......and of course, our rental includes the use of our spectacular Lake Michigan Beach. We think our private Luna Gowdy Beach is one of the clearest, cleanest, and best beaches in Union Pier! Besides being so close to Lake Michigan, we are an easy walk to the Whistle Stop Grocery and Deli and the Red Arrow Road House Restaurant (3 to 3 1/2 blocks).
We think our cottage is wonderful, but please keep in mind that our cottage is NOT a party house. Our cottage is much too small for a wedding or family reunion or any kind of party with lots of people. Remember it's only 585 sq. ft.--- that's little! Also, keep in mind that we only have parking for TWO cars. Our absolute MAXIMUM IS FOUR PEOPLE, THAT INCLUDES CHILDREN. We must abide by this maximum number, as it is also mandatory as dictated in our rental license with Chikaming Township.

The perfect place to end the summer with. The beach does not disappoint and the cottage had every creature comfort we could ask for. We hope to be back soon!

This is a clean, cozy cottage. Fits 4 adults nicely with one bathroom. It has everything we needed without excess or clutter. The beach is down several flights of stairs but very close (75 steps). I would go back without hesitation. The owners are friendly and work hard to maintain the property.

Perfect cottage for a week’s stay in Union Pier, MI. Easy access to beach by sturdy stairs with a few built in benches. Great communication with hosts. Truly enjoyed our stay and hope we can stay again. Highly recommend!!

Rosemarys cottage was perfect for our little family! The kitchen is well stocked and we were able to cook a few meals. The access to the beach was awesome for getting back and forth with our infant. One thing to note for future renters is that the only TV is in the bedroom- not a deal breaker for us but worth knowing ahead of time!

Rosemary greeted us with all the tips on how to run the cottage which was a great help. We loved the cottage my 9 year old grandson said he could live at the cottage! It was roomy for the 3 of us. All the amenities you could need. Private beach was a plus. Will stay again

Thank you Rosemary & Mike

This cottage was super sweet- breezy and bright!
It was great to be able to just pop down to the beach any time we wanted- from a morning walk to a swim in the afternoon to a sunset viewing. The comfort and convenience could not be matched anywhere else- and we have stayed in several places in the area. Clean, cozy, and it had everything we needed! We LOVED our stay here and would come again, any time! And we did not turn on the TV once LOL!

Lovely, cozy cottage very close to beautiful beach. Loved the attention to details that made the place feel like home.

We loved the area as it was our first time. The sand is soft beyond belief and the privately owned beach was very clean. We left 4 items behind in the cottage and they were mailed to us within days free of charge which we were very grateful for. Thank you Rosemary for going over and above!

It was very nice, very clean. Located within a short walk to a very nice beach. Only 2 flights of 31 stairs each with benches if needed along the way. The 2 bedrooms are nice with 1 washroom which off the kitchen.

We are incredibly happy that to come back to th8s cozy cottage whenever we can, year after year. It is so obvious the amount of thought and care that has gone into every aspect. We would love to keep this place a secret, but that wouldn't be fair to Rosemaey and Michael. 5 🌟⭐⭐⭐⭐

We've stayed in lots of different cottages up and down the coast of Lake Michigan, and this was one of the best. Its hard to find an affordable rental so close to the lake. The rental was spotless and the kitchen was well stocked with dishes and cookware that you want to cook/eat on (no rusted pots and pans here!). We travelled with two children and appreciated the blackout curtains in both bedrooms. We also liked that the rental was located well off of the busier roads that run through Union Pier. Highly recommend!

We love staying at this beach house. It's perfect for our family. We love the recent updates with the bigger refrigerator, dishwasher and outdoor shower. You can't get much closer to the beach! The owners are amazing people who provided a clean, functional and cozy vacation beach cottage. We plan to stay here a 6th time! Hopefully, many more after that....making family memories. It's our favorite!

We stayed in many cottages in Union Pier but this one felt the most like home. It had everything we needed, plus more. It was a short walk to the lake and a great fit for my family of four.
I loved cooking on the gas grill and had fun playing board games, when we weren’t at the beach.
Our favorite place for breakfast & lunch:
The Black Currant Bakery (all menu items were vegetarian friendly & a lot were vegan too).
Thank you Rosemary and Mike for renting us your lovely cottage!

My daughter and I stayed here last year, and returned for a second year in 2023! Perfect spot, soooo close to the beach, incredibly clean and comfy and cosy! And, property manager is like a great friend allowing us to stay at her home!

The place was adorable. Very well stocked with everything you would need. We went during the week so it was so nice and quiet. Image it would get noisy if it was a busy weekend. Perfect location to easily get to the beach.

I'll be honest--there's a part of me that wants to skip this review in hopes that the secret won't get out and we will be able to repeat our stay at Rosemary and Mike's place much more frequently in the future. On the other hand, that would not be fair to Rosemary and Mike, so I'll make it short and sweet.
This place was perfect for our family (couple plus a 3-year-old). While the unit is not huge, it was very clear that the owners had thought carefully about what guests might want or need and made sure it was available. The location is fantastic--very quick walk down to the beach, close to the Union Pier strip, and quick drive into New Buffalo for dinner/ice cream. In short, it had everything we wanted for a weekend getaway, and we hope to be back again soon!

Overall a fantastic experience!
Rosemary was terrific! She met us to hand over the keys and highlight the property perks.
Her place is beautiful! From the antiques, to the light and airy decor, her fully stocked cottage was perfect for 2 middle age ladies looking to get out of town for a few days.
Just down the stairs to the beach and a few blocks over to the coffee shop, delicious bakery and the roadhouse restaurant for dinner was everything we needed.
Thank you Rosemary, we loved our stay and look forward to being back again!

Rosemary and Mike were so attentive to every detail of our stay. It’s very clear that they not only take great care of their cottage, but they very much care about their guests. They took time to meet us and walk us through and take an interest in us. We felt a home instantly! We’ve stayed at lots of rentals over the years and this is the only time we’ve had an owner meet us personally. They even took note that this was a getaway for our Anniversary and left us a gift. So very thoughtful. Loved our time away!

The cottage was very well maintained and offered the best views of Lake Michigan. We appreciated the high quality kitchenware, bedding, and towels. We hope to stay here again!

Very nice property. Not very spacious but the location is perfect. Mere steps to the stairs to the stairs down to the beach. Walking distance to the Whistle Stop. This was second time staying here and both trips have been wonderful. Mike and Rosemary are excellent hosts!

Mike and Rosemary are wonderful hosts. The cottage is pristine and has everything you need. It is beautifully decorated. We loved the proximity to the beach and we were able to walk pretty much wherever we wanted to go. Perfect for a Girls' get-away weekend!

I was so glad to return to this lovely cottage several years after my husband and I first visited. This time I was alone for a solo writing retreat designed to provide me with focused time to work on a book and also enjoy fall along Lake Michigan. This is the perfect place for this sort of getaway! Good writing space, quiet, excellent WiFi, all the comforts of home, and just steps from the lake. I love the cottage’s combination of respect for the history of the area and thoughtful updates. The perfect weather was a bonus, providing gorgeous sunsets every evening. I was also able to get in some wonderful hikes at Warren Dunes, Warren Woods, and Galien River County Park (thanks to Rosemary for the rec on that last one, what a gem).

The cottage was perfect for a little getaway. It is apparent the owners care a great deal about the property and the guest’s stay. They have thought of everything. It should be noted that it was immaculate. Would love to return.

Beautiful cottage that is a very short walk to a spectacular private beach. The beds were very comfortable. Cottage has everything you need.

This is the perfect cottage for a girl’s getaway! The cottage was exactly what we were expecting upon arrival. Communications from the owner, Rosemary before our arrival were concise and clear. The cottage was clean, beds were super comfy and overall, such a lovely cottage. The walk to the beach is easy, the steps are not intimidating, there are a few benches along the way where you can stop for a rest if needed. Thank you for a wonderful weekend, we will be back!

Rosemary and Mike clearly care for this home and your stay more than most vrbo owners. The care that Rosemary takes to ensure you dont have any snags on your trip is second to none.
The home itself is in great condition with every item you could need.
The kitchen has everything including a few seasoning staples. Not once did we say "I wish it had" or "wish we would have brought". The cookware is top of the line. The grill is new and works flawlessly.
The bathroom is cozy but the shower is huge. The pull away shower head is great for a rinse after being in the lake.
The king size bed was the most comfortable we have slept in on a vrbo trip! That bed is worth renting this home again.
Easy access with front and back doors made our trips to and from the lake seamless.
The private lake access with 300ft of private beach is something you cant find easily in Union Pier. It truly is 75 steps as Rosemary says.
We cant wait to rent again from Mike and Rosemary

The cottage was very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed for our weeklong stay. Rosemary even met us at the corner when we couldn't find the entrance to the complex. The beach is 75 steps from the cottage and it is gorgeous! We have never been in Harbor Country before and with so much to do between the beach , wineries, breweries , shopping and parks we will certainly be back.
6.0
I’ll start with positives- proximity to the beach and beach itself was great - lots of steps but to be expected. Beds were comfortable. One chair comfortable. Cute property on first look.
Negatives- do not count on doing laundry. The two in one W-D tucked in tiny inaccessible closet, works inconsistently, and most importantly the front load door is covered with a thick layer of mold which you can see upon inspection which we discovered after running and a horrible smell filled entire unit. It also leaks water all over floor when used which we had to clean.
The kitchen has almost no usable counter space and not a single empty cupboard to store any food. Pots and pants filthy and all dishes must be rewarshed before using. Itensil drawer wreaks when opening- maybe of smoke??
The bathroom is soo tiny, irregular extra small toilet seat is uncomfortable and toilets clogs dirty no reason.
We were allowed to check in early but when Rosemary let us in she commented that housekeeper did not clean up to par which was obvious and evidenced by visible mold in shower walls- she offered to bring over Tilex but I am not into cleaning my rental after previous guests upon arriving on vacation.
The turquoise couches the most uncomfortable I have sat on, beds were comfortable though.
No outdoor shower or even hose to wash feet off outside impractical for beach rental.
May be workable for a single couple, but families with young children inconveniences not worth it.

Beach Vacation
The cottage was exactly as pictured. Very clean. The beds were incredibly comfortable. Proximity to the beach couldn’t be better (Although fewer steps would be nice). Everything about the cottage was relaxing.

The Perfect Cottage for us!
This was our 4th stay in this cottage. The owners are very friendly and courteous. The cottage is extra clean and well maintained and has everything you need! You can't get much closer to the beach! We hope to return next summer for another week of lazy beach days, fun on the water, campfire s'mores and amazing sunsets!
