BOATING: If you bring a boat or jet ski(s), there is a boat ramp on the mainland side of the Sunset Beach bridge. Recent dredging (2024) has improved water access. There are no rental refunds in the event your boat does not clear properly or if there is unforeseen damage to our dock preventing its use.
GENERAL INFO: Dreaming of a quiet getaway to the North Carolina coast? We have vacationed at Sunset Beach since early 1990s. We purchased this home in 2008 (and owned a separate beach cottage on the island for many years before). We are always doing something to keep the property updated and fresh. This is our home away from home and we want you to enjoy Sunset Beach just like our family. The property is decent sized for a small family getaway (with grandparents, cousins, or friends).
The home has an open floor plan on the main level and is tastefully furnished. The kitchen is well-equipped. There are games and activities galore. Under the house you will find additional space to relax. Take the well-loved canoe or one of the two kayaks down the canal to the Intracoastal waterway. The screened porch provides a great venue for an afternoon board game or dining al fresco. Enjoy ocean, canal, and intracoastal views from the decks and many windows. Sun decks on the main and upper levels provide alternative spots to the beach. We expanded the original front deck and have solid wood Adirondack chairs on all three levels. Public beach access is ~300 feet from the house. Guests may enjoy our fabulous 'beach buggy' for easy transport of beach essentials.
We welcome rentals from families and responsible adults over the age of 25 (the person who signs the rental agreement must be present on the property throughout the rental period). The house sleeps a maximum of 8 people (adults and any children traveling with you). Review the floorplan carefully to ensure the bedroom/bedding arrangements work for your group. Absolutely NO PETS and NO smoking in this home or anywhere on the property. Our home backs up to water and has many decks and interior open railings. Keep this in mind if you are vacationing with younger children.
ABOUT SUNSET BEACH: Sunset Beach is the Southern-most barrier island on the North Carolina coast. It is a short drive to Calabash (Seafood Capital of the South) and ~20-minute drive to North Myrtle Beach. Sunset Beach is one of North Carolina’s most peaceful beaches with 200+ feet of natural dunes before the first row of homes. The atmosphere is quaint and family-oriented, even during peak season. One of the Nation’s most beautiful wildlife preserves – Bird Island – is a nice walk (2.5 miles from the house) down beach. Visit the Kindred Spirit mailbox – an inspiration for Nicholas Sparks's novel "Every Breath." Observe deer, wild goats, sea turtles, and other sea life as well as enjoy miles of undeveloped dunes and marsh areas.
If you are a golfer, you don't have to travel far to enjoy dozens of courses. We are close to many local conference centers (Sea Trail is one), making our home a nice alternative to hotel lodging.

The Bugg house is well equipped and comfortable. The location is great, easy walk to the beach and great dock on the inlet.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Bugg House. We especially enjoyed the area under the house and all of extra things that were provided. There were three generations- five adults and three children.

We enjoyed our stay at the Bugg House. It was such a comfortable house. Even thought most of our time is spent on the beach, my family loves comfortable living room furniture at night and on rainy days. The Bugg House more than delivered in this aspect. The walk to the beach was much shorter than I expected and being right between two beach accesses was very nice. There were two situations where I had to contact the owners regarding the key code to lock/unlock doors and they were immediately available and resolved the problem. Overall, it was a great week!

We have been going to Sunset beach most of the past 41 years, most often staying oceanfront. I have to admit that this canal home has a much more pleasant, neighborly feel. Looks to me that this house is being updated a bit each year. Pride of ownership shows.

Stayed at the Bug House with my adult children and it was great! Great location and we loved the outdoor spaces. Jeanette was very responsive with my questions. Our only issue was the beds weren’t quite as comfortable as we had hoped. Otherwise, a great place for our week at the beach!!

Sunset Beach never disappoints and neither did the Bugg House. We feel fortunate to have stayed in such a beautiful and well loved home for two weeks this summer. We’ll be back. Thanks Buggs!

Great Location with all the Amenities for Sunset
This was the perfect beach house for our annual family vacation to sunset. Great location to beach access, outdoor shower, lots of outdoor seating and the entire house was nicely decorated. It was comfortable and inviting. Easy to check in and the host checked in a couple times to ensure everything was ok and a reminder that the trash went out. Would highly recommend the Bugg house and we hope to stay here again!

Family vacation at the Bugg House
Enjoyable week. Easy contact with owners. Would rest again, but at beginning of summer. Several small repairs needed. Master bedroom not as nice as online photo. No pantry or cabinet storage in kitchen for groceries. Tough with a family of 8. Other amenities nice. Upgrades in baths welcomed. We enjoyed kayaking, crabbing and fishing in the canal. Town of Sunset Beach and Calabash enjoyable.

Great House and Location!
Our Family had a wonderful week at The Bugg House! We enjoyed our mourning coffee on the top deck with the view of the ocean. In the evening we would sit up there and feel the ocean breezes and hear the waves…so peaceful.
The house has everything you need. And a great flow to it. Very roomy. It was so nice to be on the canal and take the kayaks out.
The best part is that it’s just a quick walk to the beautiful beach!!!
Thank you!

Sunset is our favorite!
We love this beach for so many reasons and have stayed in many houses. The Bugg House is perfectly located and had plenty of space.

This house provides a very relaxing environment and the location on the canal and closeness to the beach is terrific. Though not new, the house is very clean, tidy and comfortable. Enjoy the kayaks and canoe on the canal, start gazing on the decks, and the well stocked kitchen and beach equipment (mainly the ability to take things to the beach in the buggy provided). We are repeat visitors to the Bugg house, and would gladly return!

Perfect House for 6 Adults
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed staying at The Bugg House. Plenty of inside and outdoor space. Our favorite spot was the screened porch every morning for coffee and catching up. I can’t wait to stay here again in the future.

Wonderful stay at a dream beach house!
The Bugg House was a beautiful house in a great location on Sunset. It had comfy beds, a nice kitchen, gorgeous living room, and you could not beat the location. Very close to the ocean and right on a canal where you could step out onto a dock to go kayaking. The owners were friendly and good communicators. We were impressed with how everything was labelled for how to use (grill, canoe/kayak, wifi, TV, etc.). Also brand new kitchen cabinets and countertops showed the owners wanted to keep the place spruced up! Our only small complaint was that the closet of 'free to use' beach stuff (chairs/lifejackets/etc.) were well-used and rusty.

Great spot
Great house and location. Nice layout. Close to the beach and on the canal. Left my small boat at the dock and found the canal to be navigable except at dead low tide. House is well appointed and comfortable. We had a minor issue w/ the cleaners and owners resolved it quickly and fairly. Would rent again.

Great week at Sunset Beach
We really enjoyed the property. The property is conveniently located near the beach - short walk to beach access. The house is great. We have visited Sunset for many years now and this home was one of the best maintained properties we've stayed at. We will definitely consider this property for future visits.

Great Beach House, Great Beach Time
This house has a great layout for a family, with the master bedroom on the first living level and three more bedrooms on the second living level. The house was clean and well supplied. It has almost everything you need including kitchen stuff (and Keurig coffee maker), tons of books, games and lots of movies. We enjoyed the kayaks and canoe as well as the beach chairs. Breakfast was in the shade on the front deck and happy hour was in the shade on the back deck (overlooking the canal). We also did a cookout with the weber grill. Almost best of all was the convenience to the beach, like a two minute walk. The house was well decorated and very homey with comfortable couches and chairs and a large living room table large enough to hold our 1000 piece puzzle. With three decks, several TV's, the puzzle table, and the beach we could each do our own thing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Bugg House.

Great home away from home
My family and I just stayed at Bugg House and found it homey and very comfortable. It reminded us of someone's home rather than a rental. By that, I mean that it was well-equipped and decorated in a way that reminded me of visiting a cousin or aunt. Not sterile at all, this home has all sorts of touches of home (ladybug decor as a nod to the Bug(g) last name, pics of their family, lots of art and kids' art, etc) and it's laid out in a way to facilitate community and activity. We particularly loved the many decks and porches. With several teens with us, it was great to be able to spread out and have space in pairs or trios across the property. Most noteworthy for us was the fact that the house has porches on both sides of the house, making shady spaces throughout the entire day. Coffee in the front, lunch and dinner in the back--it was perfect. And the house is set back a bit more than the other houses on the street--closer to the canal--so, the views are spectacular and it feels a little more private. The kitchen is particularly well-stocked. We've stayed in countless under-stocked places at SB over the years and this was a welcome change. The beds were comfortable, as were the couches and deck chairs. The washer and dryer are oversized which helps in easily keeping up with towels and other items during vacation. In addition, the kayaks, canoe, dock, and board games left us with plenty to do. In summary, it's a beautiful home that provided us with just the right amount of rest and recreation options (frankly, they also provided other items we didn't have time to get to use). Also important--it's a short walk to either the 6th or 7th street beach accesses--3-4 minute walk to the beach at most. I recommend it without hesitation. Oh, and it's a much better price for the size and amentities than any other house we've rented at SB over the last couple of decades. If you're new to SB and looking for a quiet, beautiful family beach and beach home for a vacation, you've found it.

Great Spring Break at the Bugg House!!!
What a great find! We stayed at the Bugg House during Spring break with my teens and mother and truly enjoyed our 5 nights. The house was very cozy. Lots of space for everyone. I enjoyed the various decks available. Great view of the canal too. Kids enjoyed the kayaks, hammock and the short walk to the beach!! Jeanette was very accommodating and responded quickly to my questions and concerns. I will certainly come back! Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Very nice house, great location, owners wonderful to deal with.
Me and my husband spent our 30th Wedding anniversary there and had a wonderful time. The house was great and having the dock to fish off was wonderful, we were hoping to take the kayaks out but weather was too cold. Would definitely recommend staying here.

A Great Place to Stay - Even in December
We loved the Bugg house! Even in the winter the decks were great to sit out on and watch the birds fish in the canal and listen to the sounds of the ocean. We even took the Kayaks out with the added benefit of being one of the only families out on the water :) The house was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed having access to the games in the cupboard. Overall a great stay!

Beautiful house with a beautiful view. Having the canal at the back of the house was amazing.
I have been to Sunset Beach, North Carolina each year to visit family in the area but we have always stayed with family. Now having children, we decided to rent a beach home and we are so thrilled that we made that choice. The Bugg House is spacious, clean, and honestly, child-proof. The stairs were easy to navigate for my 17 month old and my 3 year old. The children were always in our view but there was never a time that we felt that they could be in danger.
The house has plenty of rooms, bathrooms, porches, and amenities. We were comfortable at all times at the house. Having the back of the house on the canal was an amazing experience for my family. We fished and caught crabs daily. We saw plenty of wildlife from birds to jellyfish from the dock. My children were thrilled to see all of the wildlife. We also enjoyed the board games and the books that were supplied by the family. It made for nice evenings/nights that were spent with the family in relaxation.
The owners were always available and within a phone call away. Checking in and out was very easy.
Sunset Beach is the nicest beach that I have been to and I have been to quite a few beaches. The beach is even nicer when it is a short walk to the beach when you have a semi-private walkway from 6th Street (the entrance to the beach near the Bugg House). It is a 3 minute walk to the beach with children on a wooden walk way through the dunes which are packed with wildlife and plant life. Once you get to the beach, it is essentially a "choose wherever you would like to sit" beach because the 6th Street walkway is so private. The beach is amazing.
All in all, this was my favorite vacation because it was my children's first vacation in a place that I love. The Bugg House met every one of our expectations and then surpassed them. It was such an enjoyable time at the house especially the down time when the children were napping. There were so many places to cozy up and read a book in the Bugg House or just sit back and relax. We plan on coming back next year and would love to stay in the same exact house because it was so welcoming.

well appointed house with everything you could need!
We very much enjoyed staying at the Bugg house. It had so many fun things to take advantage of and we didn't even get to them all! It was comfortable and spacious and very conveniently located. Our hosts called us just after we got there to make sure we had everything we needed. We would definitely stay here again on another trip to beautiful Sunset Beach. Next time we'll take out the canoe!
