About this house rental
Before requesting to book, please know we need to know your plans—your needs and your plans. We want the house to be right for you and we need to know you are a good fit. We have a 24 hour review for this reason. Until we have this information we will decline a booking.
This is a wonderful and unique opportunity to enjoy being able to experience Charleston more as a resident than a tourist. We are in a quiet neighborhood and don't allow any events out of respect for our neighbors. (We do have other properties that are suitable for wedding groups and small parties. The vrbo numbers will be listed at the end). You will enjoy the lovely piazza overlooking the garden and the Ashley River and the beautiful interior spaces.
This is an authentic Charleston 'single-house' (c 1795) which means a Charleston house that is a single room in depth, designed to catch the ocean breezes. The builders of this property were in the shipping business and a wharf was built into the river to accommodate the owner's ships. Property taxes at that time were based on a front footage assessment and the typical single house was placed so that the narrow side of the house would be on the street side. This property was an exception in that the long side of the house faces South Battery which made it even more accessible to the prevailing summer southwest breezes. The two piazzas on the south side provide a dual purpose: to provide a comfortable place to enjoy the afternoon breeze and sunsets and to provide shade for the house itself from the afternoon sun.
On the MAIN FLOOR is an elegant dining room with beautiful hand made mahogany table, sideboard, and hunt-board. Just across the central hall is a less formal living room. It is furnished with comfortable upholstered sofa and chairs and accented with fine antiques including a mahogany chest, fold top desk, French farm table with 6 chairs and a magnificent highboy. The new kitchen with marble counters, lovely light filled windows on three sides, all new appliances and conveniences is accessed through two nine foot entrances from the living room. All of these rooms open onto the main floor piazza and offer wonderful opportunities for family fun and entertaining. A gracious central stairway leads from the piazza to the large and lovely Charleston garden.
The SECOND floor houses the two main bedrooms, baths and closets. The two large bedrooms with four poster mahogany King Bed in Master and Queen in Guest Room and adjoining bathrooms open onto the upper piazza overlooking the garden and Charleston Harbor.
The THIRD floor consists of two large dormer bedrooms with wonderful windows on the north and south sides. Between these rooms is a bath with a shower. All have windows providing a spectacular panoramic roof top view of the landscape below.
The GARDEN is spacious and charming. The areas adjoining the house are terraced in old Charleston bricks and provide fabulous area for containers of flowering plants. The planting in the main garden is a balanced mixture of evergreens which provide shape, texture, and definition on a year round basis, and flowering shrubs and plants which provide a bouquet of color and scent as the seasons evolve. In the center of the front garden is a shallow reflecting pool with an Italian fountain. The fountain is automatically lighted at night and bathes the whole area with the ambiance of warm light and gurgling sounds. It is completely private from the street and fully enclosed and offers wonderful opportunities for entertaining or for children playing.
NEARBY
Very near prominent streets such as Church, Meeting, King and Legare Streets all are within very short walking distances to the property. White Point Gardens and the Harbor are within walking distance of the house. The house is in easy walking distance to the historic house museums, antique shops, art galleries, boutiques and famous restaurants.
HURRICANES
We also advise during the month of September particularly, and some into October that you purchase the trip protection insurance because that is the peak hurricane season in our area. The optional trip insurance offered through VRBO would cover any weather related cancellation. We do not offer refunds or date changes due to weather outside the 60 day cancellation period. Please ask Jamie if you have any questions at all.

Really charming old historic house, south of broad. 1 block to the battery. Nice piazza and yard. Only improvement would be nice to have updated bathrooms.

We had the most wonderful experience staying at the Bennett house! The hosts were wonderful and the house had all of the historic charm we had hoped for! Highly recommend!

Lovely home. Very comfortable beds. Two bedrooms are considerably nicer than the other two on the third floor …but if you have flexible people staying with you it doesn’t matter. Plumbing was a little wonky. Need to be patient with the hot water. But it’s a beautiful location and home.

Our family gathered in Charleston in celebration of our 50th Anniversary, 2 families from PA and one from TX.
We could not have found a more suitable home to stay in for this get together. We had family photos taken at White Point Park, less that 2 blocks from the house. We then started to explore the city of Charleston both as a group and individually. What an amazing adventure, a wonderful city. Most found everything within walking distance from the house.
Thank You for the opportunity to stay in your home. We will always treasure the time we had to be together here.

My 2 teenage kids and I had a great stay at this home. The owners are very nice and easy to talk to. The home is in a great part of town and very quiet. Loved it, would absolutely stay again.

We loved this lovely house that comfortably accommodate our family of six. The living room, dining room, and kitchen were all nicely furnished and comfortable. The four bedrooms and baths nicely met our needs. Our family enjoyed the porches, and backyard garden. It proved to be the perfect location for our grand daughter’s Easter egg hunt. When we had an AC problem, the rental manager had a repairman over to the house within an hour after hours to fix it. This stay was excellent.

The property was breathtakingly beautiful. The interiors of this historic house and the lush gorgeous garden made Old Charles come alive. This is the perfect location
No need for a car; you can easily walk to museums, shops, restaurants and all the highlights of Charleston from here. And thank you Jamie for your quick responses to questions.

Well-maintained home on the Battery; the home was exceptionally well-appointed and equipped with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. If you can tear yourself away from the porch overlooking the lush garden, it is easy walking distance to historic Charleston.

My wife and I stayed her with my son, daughter, and two of her friends. We were a little concerned when we found out the owners lived in property. Totally unfounded. Never saw them and never knew they were there.
The house was great and location was fantastic. About one block from the Battery (park). Great thing about Charleston is the history and this house is right in the middle or it. Jamie made everything easy. I’d highly recommend to anyone.

Home was fantastic. Owners were lovely and we had an amazing stay. Magical place.

This was a fantastic property with an awesome location. The only surprise was that the owners live in the first floor rooms. They were lovely people but we were unaware there were others that lived in the house before we arrived. So people walking in the back yard was a little disconcerting. This was the perfect property for our stay and would highly recommend staying here. The property manager was very quick to respond to our questions while we were there (over the weekend even).
Pros: Beautiful historic home in great condition, well kept, great location, easy to walk to restaurants, shopping, and bay.
Cons: Parking (no surprise in the historic area and they did provide permits for restricted parking days. Thanks!).
It would be helpful to have a battery powered cart to get further afield but I'm not sure where you would park such a beast.

This home actually ended up dominating our trip to Charleston. It and the property are regal. I can not overstate how shockingly beautiful it is. It’s an aberration something like this could be rented especially in the South of Broad neighborhood. Couldn’t be happier and I’m coming back every year.

We are a family of 8 adults. Each couple had their own bedroom and two couples had an en-suite bathroom. The bedrooms are on second and third floor so everyone must be capable of climbing stairs. You also have to climb a flight of stairs when you enter.
The house is exquisitely decorated with period furniture. There are magnificent porches on each level. The views are awe inspiring and the air filled with the smell of flowers. The porch furniture is new and comfortable.
Those who liked to walk could go many places on foot. Those of us unable to walk substantial distances could easily drive as the location is close to most of the activities we were eager to do.
The house is beautifully equipped. There are Dove products in every bathroom and plenty of laundry and dish washing supplies.
It was a grand experience for all of us!

There were eight of us in our late '60s and we had a delightful time in a very comfortable house. The furnishings are very tasteful and the kitchen is spacious and easy for a lot of people to move around in. The only shortcoming we found was the size of the third floor bathroom - it was not quite appropriate for four adults to share. We had a small issue with lighting the oven and operating the dishwasher but nothing we couldn't overcome. It was a delightful location and I would recommend it to anyone.

Our family of 4 + our nanny had a great time. The house is incredible. It’s like being transported back in time with all the historic wood floors and design.
The beds are all super comfortable. You can tell you are staying at a families home as opposed to a rental.
Location is also great. Pretty much a 20 minute walk to almost every restaurant. Would definitely recommend.

Elegant Stay in Historic Charleston
We just loved staying in this stately Charleston home near White Point Garden with piazza views of their beautiful garden and the Ashley River. It had every amenity we could ask for and the property manager was quite responsive.

To say that the accommodations were the perfect setting is an understatement- experiencing the rich history of this beautiful home was a focal point to our visit! There was not a single thing that our group of 7 wanted for in this special home. Sincere thanks to the owners of this perfectly appointed home. Walked to most every location and our foodie experiences were superb!

A most wonderful place full of history. We gathered our family from 4 states to enjoy a once in a life time Christmas celebration. The Battery Street home was everything we hoped for. Close to all that is desirable in Charleston from shopping, entertainment, history and fantastic dining. We hosted a Christmas dinner for 22 members of family and friends. 5 Star home and 5 Star hosts. We could not be happier in our choice of lodgings to share with our close friends and family. Thank you to the Bennet family for opening their spectacular home to us to make our stay warm and full of happiness. We look forward to returning in 2022. If you love history you will love this homes documented past.
