I loved the ocean view/sounds. Didn’t love the carpet tacking nails sticking up at the threshold of our bedroom, the moldy bathroom with leaky pipes under sink, missing light bulb in my bedroom and area outside bathroom, broken gate at the top of the stairs, poor lighting above the dining room table and no cable or internet which made it nearly impossible to access what we needed.

So we stayed here and the view was amazing. However calling it a penthouse is somewhat miss leading. Needed much in the means of maintenance. Shades on light hanging off of lampshade, paint, mildewy smell, possible mold, dirt carpets as in stained.

View, location, layout all a real plus for this property. Great access to beach ...but things at the place just didn't work. For example, it only has one bathroom and despite the staff knowing that the bathroom sink didn't work (we were instructed to shave and brush our teeth etc in the kitchen sink upon arrival)... they haven't fixed it. Front door is notoriously difficult to lock (thank you Vacassa for fixing it after two days) but it's a door it should work. The electrical outlets are so old and worn you can't plug in more than one thing at a time. Finally it is a dark place by design and light bulbs were burn out making it even darker. We had informed Vacassa of all of these items (and more) just after we checked in and virtually NONE were fixed by the time we checked out four days later. HOWEVER, Vacassa was very quick to offer us a late checkout ONLY if we paid more. Their customer service reps were very polite but could not get anything done (not the house's fault). So if you stay here, be warned ... nice location, dog friendly, bring your own tool box and spare parts... you'll need them. A real shame.

Unfortunately the bedrooms are so moldy and damp I wasn’t able to sleep in the bedroom. $1700 to sleep on the couch for 5 nights. The first night I laid in the bed and woke up completely damp, my pillow was wet. The smell hits you as you walk in. The carpet is stained and the tack strip is exposed so you get a nice surprise poke. I do love the location and the view is great. The staff is very friendly. If you don’t mind a wet mattress and a mold smell then I recommend.

Beautiful spot. Unfortunately the mechanism on the door to lock it is broken. Had to use a fireplace poker to keep it closed at night (it's a sliding glass door). Punctured my foot on an exposed carpet tack strip. Private side deck pictured no longer exists. Called Vacasa within first hour and recurved no help.

The private beach

Nice and spacious but outdated interior. Fridge is newish and that's nice (though water filter needs replacing). The deck railing on the south side is dangerous and could be pushed over without much force. Definitely need to review the safety of the deck structure before putting anyone, especially kids, on the deck.

We loved this place! Lots of room to stretch out and watch the waves from the living room. The beach path is a beautiful walk. The beds were amazing. Water was also amazing. We had some issues with the lights in one bedroom. The plugs are very loose and couldn’t hold our chargers or the light plugs. One of the lights didn’t have a shade and the hallway light didn’t work. But we were happy all the same. I loved that it was right between Newport and Depoe Bay.

Family of four stayed very comfortably at penthouse #2 with its beautiful views and incredible beach sounds. It is not a luxury suite, and that’s all the better for the setting.
The photos don’t do the place justice, the couch have been replaced and there were a few more replacements. Recommend!

Perfect location and a well-loved home with amazing private deck; minutes to the beach on your own private trail.

This is a no thrills cabin, which is outdated and has baseboard heat. That said, it worked well for me and my family. The location was great!

We first stayed at the Alpine Chalets when our Dobie was six months old . . . she’s in her tenth year now, and Penthouse Suite 2 is still our go-to vacation spot on the Oregon coast. It has everything we need, along with access to one of the best beaches ever. Not fancy, but comfortable, well-loved and cared for. Thank you for nearly a decade of helping us make great memories with our fur kid. Can’t wait for our next visit! 💖

Can I give zero stars!?
-Walking up the stairs was a hazard because they were so slippery and steep.
-the inside of the property was musty and damp. Which they are aware of because there is multiple air purifiers in the space.
-the room the children were sleeping in leaked and kept waking them up.
-I felt cleaner if I didn’t shower. The shower curtains were gross and dirty.
-I felt sick walking around inside because of the smell and I’m pretty sure the whole building is falling off the cliff anyway because there is a major slant in the rooms.
All in all this property does not even deserve 1 star.

Relaxing Weekend Getaway
The view is something special, as is the walk down to the beach. We had a great time in a peaceful location, listening to the rain and looking out over stormy waves.

Perfect sun deck and ocean views!
The beach was very long, so we were able to walk for hours and it wasn't too crowded. The property manager was very nice and quick to give us the property details when we arrived. Will definitely go back!

Shore fishing
Had a great time even though it rained all week.
Caught fish right out in front of our place.

Great time
The unit was renovated and does not look like the pictures anymore - it has a brand new laminate floor, a new couch... It was a really good surprise! The view is great, the access to the beach through a little path in the woods is really nice, you can sit on a bench and watch the sunset from there. It's also a short 10 min walk to Devil's Punch Bowl, where you can find a surfing shop, a coffee shop, Mo's seafood restaurant and a winery.
We basically spent our time on the big terrace, watching the waves and the birds.
Would recommend!

Not the best communication or response
House was not clean when we got there. Had to wait another 3 hours before we could even get in. WIFI did not work and I called about it with no response. Stairs to the beach completely unsafe and almost fell.

Spring Break at the Rock!
Such a great place and the VIEWS! My cousin and a friend had a blast making meals, enjoying the fireplace and making memories! This place has the charm of a V.C Andrew’s novel of the 90’s definitely will be coming back!

Cozy with a view
Had an incredible time at Otter Rock. The view of the ocean while sitting in the living room or on the deck is spectacular! Could have spent our whole vacation just sitting there and taking it in. Loved the easy access to the beach from the property and enjoyed a nice long walk with our dog, practically had the entire beach to ourselves. Quick drive to Newport for groceries, dining and other shopping. Property Manager was very welcoming and helpful. Would definitely stay here again!!

Eyes wide open
The positive of this condo is it's beautiful location. In the "penthouse suite" there are views of the ocean from the deck and living room.
However, there were a few things to be aware of. The dishes and pots/pans were marginally clean. I didn't feel comfortable using anything without washing it first.
The entire place was decorated in shabby 70's decor. The rugs were disgusting, and made me concerned about the overall cleanliness of the place. The countertop in the bathroom was dirty, water stains and who knows what.
The biggest problem we encountered was the lack of a working lock on the entrance door. It locked from the inside, but the key didn't work to lock the door if I went out. I contacted the management and they came and changed it out the next day, but I was not able to make that lock work either, the key kept getting stuck. There was a light switch that was connected to a ceiling fan/light. When I arrived it was held on by one screw, like someone had attempted to repair it and left it mid-job. When I turned the fan on I discovered it wasn't possible to turn it off. Maintenance was called for this as well, and was able to turn it off by wiggling wires, and then left it with wires exposed and not working for the rest of our stay.
I requested a partial refund for the inconvenience of having these issues and dealing with maintenance while on vacation. I never heard back about this request.

Comfortable and clean
View is to die for. Bed was comfy but pillows were deflated. Unit was spic and span except for the carpet which vrbo said they had dealt with before we booked. We did not notice any odors but we both had colds. Our dog loved hanging out on the fenced deck and her leashless runs on the deserted beach.

Nice location and view but needs some TLC
Great property with excellent views and privacy. This property just needs a little more care, maybe a carpet clean, and some minor electrical updates. The penthouse was aged, but not in terrible shape. There was a little beach funk in the apartment, but dissipated after one day with activity in the place. Definitely worth the cost, when you factor in other locations with the same kind of amenities. Would definitely stay again!

Bad Smell
Although the carpets were stained (but appeared cleaned) and the lighting was the worst, the part that bothered us both was the damp musty smell throughout the house. Even after opening windows it was still there and permeated everything to the point it all had to be left in the garage until cleaned and washed. Although outdated it looked clean and served it's purpose. The walk to the beach is a nice short walk but some parts are a little steep.

Stunning Views! Disgusting carpet
We stayed here several times. We absolutely LOVE the view and location. I read several reviews before our stay this time and people complained about stains and smell in the carpets. So I assumed they took care of the carpet issues. NOPE!! the carpets were worse than the last time we stayed. stains all over, dog smell. This wasnt the fault of the housekeeper. we saw the vacuum cleaner she had to use and it was old and didnt pick up any of the dog hair. I felt bad for her because she really tried to clean the entire place while we waited because we arrived early. You seriously need to either shampoo the carpets or or replace them. they are HORRIBLE. The only reason we keep coming back is the VIEW.

Perfect Location/Almost private Beach
Fantastic location and beach has very few people on it due to public access being on either end and property is in about the middle. Have stayed here several times. Being that dogs are welcome is a HUGE plus. However, as many others have commented for months, carpet is VERY dirty with many pet stains. I would gladly pay $5 more per day to have the carpet changed once a year. Not a deal breaker though as there are no bad smells from the carpet. Also, only two of the stove burners worked. One didn't work at all and one would hardly get warm even on high. Would stay again even with minor issues as the pluses outweigh the negatives.

Location is amazing. A nice place for a casual trip to the coast. Not a lot of bells and whistles, but it is warm and quiet.

Not sure I understand the negative comments. A clean place with a great ocean view. Beautiful, expansive beach. Perfect for our furry friend, Bishme (he was in heaven)...Highly recommend it!

We didn't think this place was a good value, as the "cons" outweighted the "pros."
Pros:
- Good beach access down a nice wooded trail
- Decent ocean views
- Dog friendly accommodation
Cons:
- Pet fees were overpriced ($200 for 4 nights)
- Terrible lighting. The only room with adequate lighting was the bathroom. Not enough light in the kitchen to prepare a decent meal or at the dining room table to play board games at night.
- Place was shabby, especially for the high nightly rate. We don't mind outdated, so long as things are functional.
- Sliding glass door (front entry) is really hard to open/close.
- Kitchen supplies are bare bones and low budget. There is no tea kettle and only one wine glass in the kitchen, but hey, there are two toasters!
- The railings on the elevated wood deck are loose and an accident/lawsuit waiting to happen. Does anyone inspect these things?
The whole vibe of the place was cheap motel rather than someone's beach home.

Our 60th Anniversary trip with our two sons.
Everything was clean and well stocked with all of the essentials. The front door gave us some problems but everything else worked fine. The view of the ocean was great and we enjoyed the walk to the beach. The staff was courteous and attentive.
