It's located just five minutes from the French Quarter in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans which is a National Historic District. Food & Wine Magazine calls the Bywater 'New Orleans Hottest Neighborhood.'
When it comes to vacation home rentals: New Orleans is a special place because the architecture here is so incredible. And Greatmen Cottage delivers: 12 foot ceilings, massive windows, a spacious kitchen with copper countertops, plus a huge terrace with a lovely garden and a spectacular fountain. Compared to other vacation rentals in New Orleans, Greatmen Cottage is truly in a league of its own.
Greatmen Cottage is available as a Vacation Rental & as a Filming Location. It has been completely renovated, updated and professionally decorated and landscaped. This home is very spacious at 2,000 square feet. It has open views and an enormous, very private side yard and back yard that feature extensive brick terraces and beautiful plantings.
On the first floor, this sunny, spacious home features a large foyer, enormous living room (14 x 25), dining room (14 x 14) with French doors leading to the side yard, a huge cook's kitchen (12 x 25) featuring a professional grade Jade range, side by side refrigerator/freezer, custom glass cabinetry, a large island with double under-mount sinks, and extensive copper countertops. Off the kitchen, there is a glass sunroom featuring enormous floor-to-ceiling windows and a brick floor. This brick floor continues into the downstairs bathroom that features a large stall shower with white subway tile walls and a cascade shower head.
Upstairs features three large, private bedrooms, each with a queen bed and generous closet. There is also a large linen closet and a separate laundry closet featuring a stacked full-size front-loading washer and dryer. Upstairs also features an innovative double bathroom, which allows one person to use the toilet in private while another person uses the shower in private. The shower room features two side-by-side pedestal sinks with medicine chests. The large stall shower sports a solid glass door, marble floor and white subway tile walls. Like the downstairs shower, it features a cascade shower head. The toilet room features a toilet, a large closet with ample shelves for toiletries and a third pedestal sink with a large mirror.

This house is situated in the Bywater – the trendy, hipster neighborhood that's just five minutes downriver from the French Quarter. Artists and musicians relocated to Bywater when the French Quarter became too pricey. Now joined by professionals and young families, its high elevation has allowed it to thrive post Katrina as it never flooded. The Bywater along with neighboring Faubourg Marigny are historic districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They are two of the most colorful neighborhoods in New Orleans. The Architectural styles borrow heavily from the colonial French and Spanish and have elements of the Caribbean. This unique blending of architectural elements over the last three centuries has resulted in an architectural style unique to the city of New Orleans. There are many incredible restaurants, hip bars, lively pubs and art galleries scattered throughout the neighborhood.
Like Satsuma Cafe & Coffee House – it’s a favorite breakfast and lunch joint featuring some of the freshest and most innovative choices in town. Elizabeth’s restaurant is very popular for breakfast, lunch and brunch - their praline bacon is a cross between praline candy and salty pork, truly amazing and not to be missed.
There is an amazing local pizza place right around the corner from our house called Pizza Delicious. Amazingly great pizza, voted Best in New Orleans for the past several years. Their Peppadew & Arugula Pizza is my favorite. It’s a quick three-block walk from the house.
Euclid Records is a vinyl music store with a funky ambiance – it has a huge selection specializing in jazz, soul and New Orleans music. It’s next to Pizza Delicious. They also do live music events from time to time.
The Joint is a great BBQ restaurant on the Corner of Royal Street & Mazant Street, 7 blocks from our house, an 8 minute walk. Amazing ribs, chicken and pulled pork. Great sides. And the Peanut Butter Pie is hard to resist for dessert. Great homemade iced tea & lemonade and also a full bar. Lots of tables and a bar inside.
The Country Club (just a quick five minute walk from our house) is an elegant retreat that offers a lushly landscaped saltwater pool, a hot tub & a sauna. Plus an amazing restaurant with two bars (one inside & one outside). It’s the perfect setting for a relaxing afternoon – memorable meals, poolside cocktails, poolside dining and the friendliest staff in town.
Thursday night in Bywater is the night to go to Vaughan’s Lounge as it is Kermit Ruffins's night. Go early and get some of the barbecue Kermit is often cooking up before a show. Another popular place for dinner and music seven nights a week is Bacchanal, a funky wine shop on Poland Street. Here a cast of rotating chefs turns Bacchanal’s back courtyard into a food destination by showcasing their multicultural cooking. Guests sit at picnic tables and enjoy the great food, fine wine and top-notch live music.
The historic renovation business is also booming in the Bywater. Attracted by the neighborhood’s gorgeous architecture and “high and dry” elevation, many projects are already completed or underway. World-renowned architect Andres Duany recently completed his Bywater Cottages – four newly built, hurricane-resistant houses designed to blend perfectly with the neighborhood. “Ninety percent of Bywater’s architecture is gorgeous and historic; my new Bywater Cottages harmonize perfectly with that centuries-old architecture,” said Duany.
Our home is 15 blocks from the French Quarter. The best way to walk it is along the new riverfront park called Crescent Park which offers a great view of the Mississippi River the whole way. There is a footbridge called the Piety Street Arch into the park three blocks from our house on the corner of Piety Street & Chartres Street. The walk to the French Quarter from our house takes 20 minutes.
In addition to the park, I also like walking to the French Quarter via the charming streets of the Bywater & Marigny. The Orientation Guide I will provide to you details my favorite walking route. It is a charming walk through an historic district with lovely homes. You will pass a restaurant or a charming shop on just about every block.
The Desire Streetcar will one day return to replace what is currently 'A Bus Named Desire' which stops near our house 15 times a day on its five minute route between the French Quarter and the Bywater. Cab fare & Uber fare between the French Quarter and Bywater runs about $7 and the trip takes less than five minutes. Very simple and very cheap. Many guests at our house like to rent bicycles at Bicycle Michael's on Frenchmen Street.
If you plan to drive your own car or rent a car, there is ample street parking in front of our house at all times for up to two cars. Uber is also readily available from our home - it's quick, convenient and very affordable.
House Rules:
1. We require the Renter to review, complete and sign a lease agreement when they reserve our home.
2. Usage of the premises (house & property) is limited to six people. Please have a great time and enjoy yourselves. However, you may NOT host events in the house, in the yard or on terrace where you invite outside guests. Our insurance does not cover that kind of activity. Also, these kinds of events bring complaints from the neighbors regarding noise and parking.
3. We do not allow folks to blast music in the house at any time. Quiet hours inside the house run from 12 Midnight - 8AM.
4. We do not allow folks to play music on the terrace at any time. As a courtesy to our neighbors, we have quiet hours on the terrace between 9PM and 9AM.
5. No pets.
6. No smoking in the house.
7. No crawfish cooking - either inside or outside the house. Although delicious, they can leave a stench that takes days to clear – so it’s not fair to subsequent guests.

Beautiful House!
Very clean, spacious, and comfortable. Great décor. Pretty garden to look at. Good communication with host. Easy to get in the house. Nice location in Bywater; it’s a 15-20 minute walk to FQ. No grill outside or dining set on the patio off the kitchen. There were only two of us so one bathroom upstairs was no problem but if you have two to three couples or a big family it might be a challenge. There are no counters for to all three pedestal sinks upstairs; it’s hard to put your toiletries adjacent. There were lower small side tables but not big enough – stuff kept falling on the floor. There is a bath on the first floor with a toilet and shower but no sink/mirror in the bathroom. Nice stay.

Loved this place and neighborhood! This was a beautiful rental; impeccably furnished and an oasis away from the craziness of NOLA. Very cool neighborhood that was fun to explore and gave an authentic New Orleans vibe. The owner gave detailed instructions so everything was as expected.
We've stayed in lots of places in this city and rate this as our absolute favorite - we'll be back!

4 of us spent the long weekend in New Orleans for a birthday celebration. This cottage is truly stunning. It was so beautiful that we did not want to leave the property. The finishes and the courtyard are out of this world. This is the only place we will stay in New Orleans.

We booked both Greatman Cottage and the adjacent duplex "The Loft at Greatman" for our family, which was in New Orleans for a wedding. Both places were beautiful and clean, and a wonderful place to come home to as busy events took place all Thanksgiving weekend.
Both places had well-appointed and very nice kitchens and very pleasant living areas, with large, airy windows. There is a wonderful, private courtyard with a beautiful fountain -- a lovely place to relax -- just out the Cottage dining room french doors.
The neighborhood is the Bywater, so like much of New Orleans, can be funky -- but very artsy and nice. If you know New Orleans at all you will be comfortable there! Booking the loft as well was great for our kids and grandkids -- so it was a wonderful location for all of us.
Our host James we very nice and professional throughout the entire booking process, and was very accommodating to our needs.
We recommend both Greatman College and the Loft very highly!
One contrast between Greatman and the Loft is that the 3-bedroom Greatman has some fairly steep steps to the bedrooms, while the 2-bedroom Loft is all on one level -- so that may make a difference depending on your visitors. It was all good with us, though.
We had the choice of booking at a number of other VRBOs and hotels during this stay, and visited a few of them where friends were staying. We have no doubt, though, that this was the best accomodation we could have had. We loved it.

We had a family wedding in NOLA so chose Greatman Cottage to be close for many events. Nice house with room for 6 adults and baby. Good living room, dining area and kitchen. Close to several good neighborhood restaurants and quick Uber to Marginy and French Quarter. Normally there is plenty of street parking, but workers came every day to work on house across the street so parking was limited during the day.

Our visit to NOLA was perfect in every way - the Greatmen Cottage was beautiful, comfortable and well stocked with everything we needed. The Bywater neighborhood is very cool - architecture, the delicious foods at the Bywater Bakery one block from the house, Crescent Park along the Mississippi is just three blocks away…and an easy drive to so much history, restaurants, jazz clubs and more. Jim is the consummate host - we’ll be back!

The cottage exceeds expectations. Bywater is a great location and communication with property manager/owner is ten star experience.

What a great house!
Greatmen Cottage was truly spectacular. It was like staying in a magazine. The design and furnishings were both beautiful and comfortable. My kids absolutely loved the outdoor space. It was very easy to park and really convenient to get around New Orleans. And don't sleep on Frady's and Satsuma which are right down the street.

Greatman Cottage
It is a lovely home and very comfortable. Great location and we took the owner’s advice and ate at Satsuma. They have an excellent breakfast, would highly recommend them. Thank you for allowing us to stay at your lovely home.

Great Trip!
Covid hit NOLA hard about two weeks before we were scheduled to visit this exact house in 2020 – a long planned family gathering of my children from various parts of the country. It was, of course, a huge disappointment, but happily we had a great host and worked through it. Fast forward to December 2021 and success. And as my son put it, the house was even better than the pictures depicted, and that is saying a ton! Not only do you feel like you are walking into an edition of Southern Living, but it is so comfortable and well appointed. There is a notebook onsite with thorough household instructions and excellent food, drink, and other recommendations for the immediate area – many we capitalized on. The neighborhood is awesome; tons of food and drink options, and for those who want to get in a workout in, a gym and running options (so I heard – I stuck with coffee and pastries from a local spot.) It is a terrific location to explore NOLA from and I highly recommend Greatmen Cottage!

Beautiful property on the inside and the garden and fountain were wonderful.
The 17 steep stairs were difficult and the only negative.
5.0
This house was an excellent place to stay for our long weekend family trip. The home itself was immaculate and beautiful. We loved using the side yard to sit and drink coffee in before heading out each day. We also really enjoyed the neighborhood-there’s a lot of good food within short walking distance.

Beautiful, historic house with amenities.
Everyone in our group enjoyed James' house. It is historic, comfortable, and feels like a home (vs. an investment property). The couches are plush, the bed linens and pillows are good quality, and it stocked with the things you expect but aren't always provided (lots of pots, pans, and spices in the kitchen; lots of bathroom linens). Its historic charm inside and out enhanced my enjoyment and appreciation of New Orleans.
The only hesitation from 5 stars was due to our group's attempt to move the trip due to COVID. We felt it was fair to request moving our trip since we had paid a premium festival price. We were unable to work out an agreement.

Absolutely amazing
This property was so beautiful and spacious and big enough even for a group of 6 if needed. Communication with the owner was very easy and the home was very well stocked and had everything we needed. A gem in a neighborhood with typically much smaller houses!

Fabulous Bywater Stay
Our second time renting the Greatmen Cottage. We will definitely be back for a third.

Beyond our expectations
The cottage was way beyond our expectations! Beautiful decor, comfortable but elegant, well equipped with everything you could possibly need. Terrific neighborhood, we walked into the French Quarter a number of times, along Crescent Park. Though plenty to do closer by. Private, huge out door space with fountain, makes you feel like you are saying in a hotel. Not one thing I would change.

Perfect Stay
James was an incredibly thorough and attentive host. He truly thought of everything. He left plenty of material to answer all our questions and responded immediately whenever we needed something.
His house is phenomenal. Everything was beautiful and clean and worked well.
Would highly recommend staying at Greatmen Cottage. Perfect distance from the quarter while still having a quiet, beautiful, high quality home to come back to.
Plenty of towels and sheets and very comfortable beds as well.

Bywater Beauty
BB is the best vacation rental I have used in USA - clean as in whistle, comfortable as a velvet comforter, styled to the nines
in attractive manner, accessible to everything, and uber-well managed like a
small boutique hotel. I recommend Greatman’s Cottage to anyone who has high expectations for a vacation residence. Owner is accessible, helpful and facilitative. GC is our NO home
from now on.

The Greatmen Cottage is a beautiful home! A must stay here!
The Greatmen Cottage is a beautiful home! The interior design, courtyard and amenities make this a warm; do not want to leave experience. All of the spaces are fantastic, but our favorites were the kitchen and the living room, picture and function perfect. The owner was excellent to work with and very responsive. He provided us with a detailed instruction book for the property and a booklet on favorites spots of New Orleans. The home instruction book was the best I had ever read, nothing was left to chance for the visitor to cope with an unknown house feature. When I return to New Orleans, this is where I will stay again and again!

Charming place with tons of historical character
Really cute place, nice and clean, plenty of linens and bathroom accoutrements provided. Prepare yourself to climb very steep stairs, as all of the bedrooms are on the second floor. One full bath upstairs with separate toilet and sink. Another full bath is downstairs. The kitchen is amazing and so is the courtyard. We really loved the fountain and motion-controlled lights! We didn't really understand the reason for not playing music outside at any time, even during legal time points. I mean, it is New Orleans. However, we would definitely stay here again and appreciate the hospitality. There were two different bus lines available only 2 blocks away in either direction, making it easy to get into the French Quarter..

Lovely quiet home! Perfect place to put your feet up after a day of sightseeing.
We had 5 family members spread over 3 generations sharing this wonderful home for 7 days as we explored all things New Orleans. It was extremely comfortable as well as beautifully outfitted. Family consensus was the house was more than a place to rest, but really enhanced the NOLA experience with its craftsmen charm and beautiful terrace.
Neighborhood was a mixture of New Orleans shotgun homes in all stages of renovation, but very quiet (except for the occasional train in the distance) and walkable to the French Quarter. Proximity to the French Quarter also means that Uber’s and or Lyfts were always no more than 5 mins away.
It gets 20 thumbs up from my crew.

A charming house! We loved discovering the area and it's character and amazing food too! The owner had truly thought of everything in regards to directions, house amenities, etc! Thank you for a fun and very comfortable stay!

Amazing cottage. Can't wait to return!
The accommodations were wonderful. Access to the building was simple and all provided instructions were straightforward. With the exception of groceries, we really were not in need of anything because all of it was provided. The bedrooms, kitchen, living room, and bathrooms were very clean. The design was amazing. The courtyard provided a nice place to gather.

Stepping Back in Time In Comfort
Our family stayed in the Greatmen Cottage and the experience was brilliant! The location of the home is within 10-15 minutes of everything one wants to do in NOLA with enough separation for a quiet contemplative sit in the back garden. You'll melt into the beautiful decor within the home and it's comfort and the outside garden area is quiet, smells wonderful (plenty of Gardenia) and lulls you to forget you're in one of the cities that never goes quiet! We enjoyed our stay tremendously. Don't be intimidated by the drive in/location the area is being 're-born' to its original charm and is surrounded by brilliant restaurants, walk in grocery and cafe's that are to die for. Most comforting, James has included everything you'll need to know in his email/on-site documentation and leaves nothing to chance! Suggest you stay, and stay frequently!

The cottage was stunning with attention to every detail. The beds were comfortable and the living areas, indoors and out, were very inviting.

The property is beautiful and in excellent condition-Absolutely would recommend.
The location is great. Lots of nearby bars with live music and a great atmosphere. The patio area is beautiful and nice for relaxing-just watch out for the little innocent looking ants because they will definitely bite. The décor and interior is in pristine condition and the overhead showers were great. We were originally going to use a VRBO near Frenchman Street which also looked cool but I am so happy that we ended up here for the overall experience. The owner was also very helpful with questions and recommendations while we were visiting. Absolutely would recommend this location.

Perfect location, comfortable and quiet
It's in the perfect location, with lots of restaurants and music within walking distance. Inside, it is really nice, very comfortable and well laid out. Loved the waterfall shower heads and soft beds. Outside, the deck is a perfect place to sip a cocktail, watch the fountain, and get ready for the night ahead.

Greatmen is a beautiful home
Greatmen is impeccably maintained with lovely touches throughout. The high ceilings create a roomy space while the furnishings minimize noise. There is a gourmet kitchen, perfect for entertaining or an intimate family gathering. I loved the expansive courtyard; we sat outside every night (bring bug spray). This was our second stay at Greatmen and we will absolutely return. The house is close enough to Frenchman and Bourbon streets (we walked everywhere) yet far enough away we didn't feel we were in the middle of a party.
The owner, Jim, was accommodating and easy to work with. He responded within minutes and made the entire experience easy.

A beautiful house with great amenities.
The Greatmen Cottage is a very nice house which we enjoyed very much. Good locations and we discovered some great local neighborhood restaurants. Was so nice to get out of the hustle, bustle of downtown and relax.

I enjoy renting homes when I travel and this home was one of the best. Beautifully appointed and comfortable. The homeowner provided info on nearby restaurants which we took advantage of. We come to New,Orleans often, My son and daughter in law love it so I am planning a return trip in the Fall to celebrate his 40th.

It was truly a home away from home! The cottage was beautiful and wonderfully appointed!
The Greatman Cottage was such a pleasure to stay in for our family celebration! It was clean, the beds were compfy, and the house was beautifully and thoughtfully appointed. We would choose to stay again if we go back to NOLA in the future! The courtyard is a treasure.
Just beautiful!

Five of us stayed in Greatmen Cottage and couldnt have enjoyed it more. The pictures are beautiful, but the house is even more astounding in person. Greatmen Cottage is exquisitely designed and immaculately clean. It was a perfect place to spend our five day stay in New Orleans. The living spaces were inviting and comfortable, and the outdoor area was such a gorgeous, special place to sit and relax. Communication was quick, easy, and friendly and the owner has thought of everything for the house. We cant wait to come back!
