Aloha! E komo mai. Welcome to Fern Cottage. Located across from Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our fully permitted house your home away from home during your next visit.
Like our other highly reviewed property (VRBO #403855), we have attempted to make Fern Cottage a perfect retreat for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the peaceful Volcano lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ʻōhi'a rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.
Our house is a cozy but spacious 900 sq ft 2 bed/1 bath house that sleeps 2-5 people comfortably. The high vaulted pine ceiling and wood floors naturally juxtapose with the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the numerous large windows throughout the house. A spacious covered half wrap-around deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides an excellent location to take in the views of the surrounding forest on our half acre property.
Both bedrooms have high-quality comfortable queen-size beds and a queen-size sleeper sofa is available to provide a third bed to accomodate your party's needs. The master bedroom has its own entry door to the covered porch. The main living/sleeping area is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.
As with our other property, we strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner Fern Cottage for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

We had a great stay! The house was clean and roomy, and the location is very close to the national park. Volcano is one of my favorite areas in the island, and this was a perfect way to experience it overnight rather than than just as a day trip.

We only stayed one night to get us closer to Volcanoes National Park before heading over to the Kona side of the island. I wish we could have stayed another! The house was comfortable and roomy for our family of four and the jungle setting was really cool. The coqui frogs do make noise all night, so bring a sound machine if you're a light sleeper.
The directions and instructions were perfect and we were able to find the house easily and use everything we needed inside the home. The house was very clean also. We enjoyed our stay!

We booked a 1-night stay during a driving tour of the Big Island. Our goal was to stay in unique properties, and this night to be close to Volcanoes National Park. This property hit the mark! Lovely accommodations, peaceful property, clear instructions from owners on how to best enjoy this unique partially off-grid property. Would definitely stay again and for a longer stay.

We were very impressed with everything about Fern Cottage from Matt’s instructions to the property itself. I have stayed in a number of rental properties but I have never seen the thoughtfulness I found here. Kitchen drawers were labeled. Individual heaters in the bedrooms as well as heated mattress pads. A gas stove in the living room to take off the chill. The cottage is close to Volcano village and the park. The property is close to the back of the estate and surrounded by the forest so it is private in every aspect. I am sure we will back.

We loved staying here. It was close to everything we needed. Close proximity to volcano national park, close to Hilo, and close enough to south point. The house was perfect, everything we needed. Quiet and safe neighborhood. 👌

Stayed here 4 nights of a 16 night visit to taste the island at 4000 ft. It was fun although we hit a very rainy period. Home was warm and cozy and we managed the volcano visit and a round of golf. Had check in trouble (my fault for misplacing Instructions) but Matt came to the rescue with one phone call. Thanks.

We were barely there, just wanted a clean place to stay close to VNP and this fit the bill. Directions to the property and the gate were very clear. Nice open space and lots of towels/bedding etc. You can tell the area has a rainforest climate as it was slightly musty smelling. Very clean though! The entire town had a rainy damp feel to it.

Loved our stay. Nice assortment of board games, beautiful forest surround, had everything we needed.

We had a fantastic stay at Ohia Estates. The home was comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated. We appreciated the spaciousness of the kitchen and living room. I enjoyed the option to heat my side of the bed while my partner kept his side cool. Sitting on the deck enjoying the lush grounds and listening to the birds was so peaceful. We should have stayed here another day and would definitely return to this property. It's a great spot to stay while visiting Volcano National Park. Highly recommend staying here.

My husband and 5 year old daughter were with me. This is a cute, convenient and private cabin very close to Volcano National Park and Volcano Village (market and food trucks). We had a wonderful stay here!
I will forewarn anyone who stays anywhere in this area that it is much colder and damp than in Kona on the coast. With that being said this place had it all to make it cozy and warm! Heat pads for the beds, propane stove in living room, electric wall fireplaces in bedrooms, and hot water. They have it figured out to make the best of the conditions there!
I would recommend this place for sure!

We found the property description accurate and felt that a lot of care and consideration had been put into outfitting and decorating the house. It is close to the park and the town of Volcano, and is located on a forested lot that provides good privacy. A good choice if you wish to visit the area.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay. The house is set back and very private. Close to volcano national park and a few good restaurants/shoppes. Would definitely stay again!

The house had everything we needed. It was in a great location for the National park and not too far from other areas of interest. It did rain every day but that was the beauty of it. When you traveled a little farther away from the rainforest it was sunny. Would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting this area of the Big Island

Staying at Hake Hubner Fern Cottage was a real treat. It is a beautiful, comfortable cottage and I would not hesitate to recommend it to other travellers. We made use of the beach towels and cooler for a trip to Green Sand Beach and Black Sand Beach (turtles!). And we went hiking in Volcanoes National Park which is just down the street.

We enjoyed the stay. Matt was very informative. Location was perfect for our needs and we had everything we required for a comfortable stay.

This is a lovely property with easy access to everything. In particular we noted how clean it was and no scent of mildew, which is almost impossible to achieve in Volcano. The TV/media set up is a bit challenging to use, but Wi-Fi was great. For some reason, the housekeeper didn’t have us on her schedule, but she very agilely switched gears and got the place ready for us. All in all this is a good family stay in Volcano.

Roomy, comfortable and well-stocked property in an excellent location that would be suitable for short or longer stays. I wouldn't hesitate to book again.

The house was great for entertaining an infant, 12yo, and helping adults relax!
Very lush and green surroundings and the perfect porch for grilling, hanging out, and relaxing.

Perfect quaint cottage for our one night stay after a long day in the park….great location, peaceful, loved the porch as the sounds came to life after sunset, grill made cooking dinner easy! My only suggestion would be a good fridge/freezer clean out (maybe some people eat other people’s food left behind?) and wipe down inside and out. Would stay here again!

We loved our short stay at this beautiful condo. It was a great size for our family of 5. Very conveniently located and even had to go cups for our morning coffee! Highly recommend.

Cottage well located if you want to go to Volcano National Park (less than 5 minutes). We had good time. Not much to do around at night time but that was not what we were there for…
Nice cottage.

We had a great stay at Hale Hubner! The proximity of the location to the park and Volcano Village was excellent while also being very quiet and private. The owner was very responsive to any questions we had. Perfect spot for families and was stocked with games and books that my daughter enjoyed. The kitchen was well equipped, including a dishwasher, which you don't always have when on catchment water. Heated mattress pads and faux fireplaces in the bedrooms were a nice touch!

We stayed at Matt’s cottage for two nights. We loved the private setting. Place was clean and instructions were easy to follow. Bathroom looked like it was remodeled recently. Beds were very comfortable. Lava was not flowing at the time of our visit which was disappointing but otherwise the trip was wonderful.

We were in Hawaii for 14 days and visited 4 islands. This house was our absolute favorite of any place we stayed! It’s so charming and peaceful. The setting is beautiful, the house immaculate, and the owners provide anything you could possibly need. 10/10! We loved it!!!

We had a very relaxing stay while exploring Volcano National Park and the surrounding area. The house feels spatious and private. The kitchen has everything you need. The plentiful umbrellas were a nice and much appreciated touch as it rained during our stay. Note that the heat can take a bit to kick in but it didn't detract from our stay. We would definitely stay again!

Cute , comfortable house nestled in the ferns and trees. We enjoyed our stay at this property. It was hard to get out of the house by the 10 am check out, though. Next time we would stay another night to have more time to relax. We would do a staycation there again!
