About this house rental
This secluded architectural gem sits on a knoll in a high mountain valley surrounded by ridgelines, near the end of a dirt road in the Green Mountain National Forest.
This is the perfect romantic getaway for one couple, but two couples or a couple with kids can stay here comfortably. Those who used to rent the octagon will remember the timber-framed barn that has now been transformed into a beautifully crafted, cozy, and fully equipped two-story house. Open living room with a recently installed heat pump and a woodstove keeps the house cozy in winter and cool and dry in the summer.
Two fields and a greenhouse comprise Tarpley Farm, a small organic flower and heirloom vegetable farm that serves two local farmers markets, CSAs, and a farm stand at the end of the road. Delicious, pretty, and plentiful!
There is a small outside campfire in a future willow grove for grilling and smores, and a grand stone fire pit in a birch grove—and a bocce court is out by a tiny house, which is a fine place to read, nap, and get some quiet time. The tiny house has heat and electricity—and can double as another room for an intrepid child or extra guest. An attached shop and toolshed off the covered entrance provides ski, boot and luggage storage.
(Please don’t make outdoor fires unless one of us is at the other house.)
On 5½ acres, the house has large forests with trails on two sides, no sounds of civilization, clear skies with natural wonders all year round, and minutes away from ski areas, cultural events and shopping.
Ski areas abound. Aside from several beautifully groomed X-Country areas, one of which is in the meadow at the bottom of the hill through the woods, there are Bromley Mountain (10 minutes away), Magic (10 minutes), and Okemo and Stratton (25 minutes). Lowell Lake State Park is close by, for swimming, fishing and kayaking.
There are four golf clubs to choose from; Manchester (20 minutes) has loads of shopping (outlet heaven), Orvis (for trout fishing on the Battenkill), as well as many galleries, the Southern VT Arts Center, the Equinox Hotel (resort/spa), Hildene and the Dorset Theater Festival. The Weston Playhouse, oldest of Vermont's summer theaters, is minutes away, with its Broadway-infused professional summer season and after-show cabaret bar.
Great restaurants nearby; my current favorite is the JJ Hapgood Store, great old country store, beautifully renovated, with fantastic pizza oven, coffee, breakfasts, music and dining.

Great little place filled with charm and great reading materials. Owner, John, is friendly and most helpful. The barn is the creation of a fertile and playful mind.

John was a fantastic host. We loved both the location and the house itself. We particularly enjoyed the craftsmanship of the house (built by the owner), the wonderful library of books and music, and the keyboard and guitar in the house. We plan to be back!

Very unique and quirky space with clearly a lot of thought that went into its design. Great location in a beautiful area. John was great, communicative, and accommodating throughout. Highly recommend!

We loved our Labor Day Weekend stay here! The house is as exactly cute as it looks in the photos, and John was a wonderful and communicative host. As previous reviewers have noted, it was great to stay in a place that felt "homey," and to be surrounded by John's impressive library. The flower gardens surrounding the house were lovely as well. We found lots to do nearby, including beautiful hikes & visits to Manchester. We'd definitely recommend this to anyone who's looking for a Vermont getaway any time of the year!

It was really nice staying at a place where someone actually lives. Lots and lots of books, art, and cool home touches to this barn. Also we got to see birds right outside our bedroom and kitchen windows. The first floor AC runs very cool, but the upstairs will be very hot (if you're going in the summer). We suggest you put the black fan on the banister at the foot of the stairs pointing up and then the other fan pointed into the upstairs bedroom. That cools it off very nicely. The host also keeps doggie treats inside so it's dog friendly if you have one! I recommend beaching it at the Emerald Lake which is about 20 minutes away, and you can rent a kayak or canoe there. Dinner at SeeSaws was fantastic. Beautiful country views in all driving directions!

octagon house in a beautiful part of vermont
Stayed here twice to ski at Okemo; in both cases we found the place to be lovely, cozy, and architecturally unique. There was an oddball social movement in the 19th century to build octagon houses and this is one that remains. Heating is with a combination of a wall heater system and wood-burning stove. The first floor bedroom is harder to heat but our kid seemed to do fine with blankets. It’s easy to cook there w ample pots, pans, and utensils, a gas stove, and a good stock of staples. John communicated quickly and clearly whenever needed and made sure our needs were met.

Quirky home with lots of character
This was a great find for a ski weekend. The main bedroom upstairs is very spacious. Location was fine for us. Set in a peaceful location without many neighbors in sight. We drove about 25 minutes to Stratton mountain. There was a grocery store just 5 or 10 minutes drive away.

Great house in VT
John was easy to work with, after an initial miscommunication. The house is honey, located in a beautiful area of VT that is close to skiing. We enjoyed having our dog with us.

Peaceful and an adventure
The property is well taken care of and it feels like a home, not just a house. The wood burning stove was wonderful and heated the whole home. The woods surrounding the house were wonderful for walks and just relaxing.

Wedding weekend
My friend and I were visiting Landgrove for a friend’s daughters wedding. John’s house was a perfect location for all our wedding related activities.
Our only hiccup was the bed in the second bedroom wasn’t prepared for guests so my friend and I ended up having to share one room. It was late at night when we discovered the issue.
The house is comfortable and adequately furnished. We really liked the uniqueness of the home. It’s a beautiful location.

Loved this house for our family of 4 plus four legged friend. Clean, bright and interesting with art and books galore. Warm stove that was easy to operate. Hiking trail out back was fun. Owner was so nice and helpful. House was close for us to get to yummy restaurants and great skiing (magic, okemo, Bromley). Highly recommend the octagon!

The home was exactly what we needed for a weekend away from the city. Secluded and spacious and cozy at the same time. John was an incredibly generous host. Would come back yearly!

Excellent Winter Getaway
This was a perfect place for a quiet winter getaway. It was a nice and quiet area that was also close enough to the mountains and sleigh rides. We had plenty of room for 4 adults, 2 kids under 3, and 3 dogs. We had fun snowshoeing on the land and even made little ski trails that the kids loved. Our dogs did not want to leave because of all their outdoor freedom they had.

Great Vermont Property
We loved the house and setting. We were able take some great hikes, but tried to follow the trail in woods, but lost it near the bottom & pushed our way to Old County Rd. Loved the Bocce. We were unfamiliar with ROKU, but eventually figured it out. My wife has to have her coffee in the morning & we were unfamiliar with the French Press coffee maker. We recommend furnishing instructions on how to use. I went on line and found instructions. I was very interested in the construction of the house. I put a two story log addition on to our house in 1985 ( took 5 years to complete -did it all myself). I designed the addition, but purchased the logs thru New England Log Homes. Where did you get the support logs for your home? We loved the rustic feel of the house - our kitchen is very similar to yours with refurbished cabinets, etc. The property is well maintained and is located near Peru, Londonderry and just up the road from Manchester. In Peru now is the JJ Hapgood General Store that serves great food & drinks. We have our favorite places (restaurants) in Manchester & Dorset, but tried the Ravens Nest this trip and found it to be very good. We highly recommend this property if you want quiet in the woods of Vermont, but be near restaurants and shopping.

A beautiful peaceful retreat!
We had a wonderful time during our stay at the Octagon House. The property is beautiful and peaceful. The house was stocked with everything we needed to cook for ourselves, there is plenty to read, and there are trails right on the property. Our dogs had a great time running around the large yard. There is a cozy alcove on the property for a fire which was perfect for making Smores and a hammock on the porch perfect to read in.
The property is short drive to many different activities. We went to a beautiful nature reserve called the Equinox Preservation which had many trails of varying difficulties. We also spent an afternoon diving and swimming in a natural pool at the base of a waterfall at Buttermilk Falls. We went to a very nice bookstore called Northshire Bookstore in Manchester and a large country store called the Vermont Country Store in Weston full of penny candy. There was so much to do in the surrounding towns. In addition to plenty of places to hike and things to do the property is also close to restaurants and a grocery stores. You'd never know it's so close because when you are at the property you feel like you far from it all which gives you the best of both worlds.
I vacationed with two teenage daughters and they both loved it and if you have teenagers you know what a big compliment that is!

Vermont Adventure
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Octagon House. We spent much of our time touring, as this was our first visit to Vermont, and the house was in a great location and a comfortable place to return to at night. It was even better to wake up in the morning to panoramic windows and so much light. The house was clean and John was a responsive host.

A house full of light
My sisters and I loved staying at the Octagon House, which is a little like a hobbit house with some Treebeard mixed in but full of light, a house that would easily qualify for a few pages in one of Lloyd Kahn’s Shelter Publication books. As you swing in one of the hammocks you’ll find the silence of the meadow to be almost edible. And the surrounding woods…oh, the woods…they are so lovely, dark and deep. John was a great host—very responsive, funny and flexible. His assistant Mary is also a gem. What a wonderful place to relax and renew, yet close to the various shops, restaurants and arts of Londonderry, Weston and in the surrounding areas. The addition of a small microwave would make it almost perfect.

A lovely house in a beautiful location.
My family enjoyed our stay immensely. The octagonal house is lovely and light-filled. The locality was quiet and secluded while at the same time allowing convenient access to outdoor activities and tourist attractions in the surrounding area. We had great fun learning to play bocce when we stayed at the house for the day. The posted description of the property was accurate and the house was clean. We had some questions before we booked and after we arrived and the owner always responded quickly and helpfully. We can recommend this property and we intend to return ourselves.
