About this house rental

This secluded architectural gem sits on a knoll in a high mountain valley surrounded by ridgelines, near the end of a dirt road in the Green Mountain National Forest.

This is the perfect romantic getaway for one couple, but two couples or a couple with kids can stay here comfortably. Those who used to rent the octagon will remember the timber-framed barn that has now been transformed into a beautifully crafted, cozy, and fully equipped two-story house. Open living room with a recently installed heat pump and a woodstove keeps the house cozy in winter and cool and dry in the summer.

Two fields and a greenhouse comprise Tarpley Farm, a small organic flower and heirloom vegetable farm that serves two local farmers markets, CSAs, and a farm stand at the end of the road. Delicious, pretty, and plentiful!

There is a small outside campfire in a future willow grove for grilling and smores, and a grand stone fire pit in a birch grove—and a bocce court is out by a tiny house, which is a fine place to read, nap, and get some quiet time. The tiny house has heat and electricity—and can double as another room for an intrepid child or extra guest. An attached shop and toolshed off the covered entrance provides ski, boot and luggage storage.

(Please don’t make outdoor fires unless one of us is at the other house.)

On 5½ acres, the house has large forests with trails on two sides, no sounds of civilization, clear skies with natural wonders all year round, and minutes away from ski areas, cultural events and shopping.

Ski areas abound. Aside from several beautifully groomed X-Country areas, one of which is in the meadow at the bottom of the hill through the woods, there are Bromley Mountain (10 minutes away), Magic (10 minutes), and Okemo and Stratton (25 minutes). Lowell Lake State Park is close by, for swimming, fishing and kayaking.

There are four golf clubs to choose from; Manchester (20 minutes) has loads of shopping (outlet heaven), Orvis (for trout fishing on the Battenkill), as well as many galleries, the Southern VT Arts Center, the Equinox Hotel (resort/spa), Hildene and the Dorset Theater Festival. The Weston Playhouse, oldest of Vermont's summer theaters, is minutes away, with its Broadway-infused professional summer season and after-show cabaret bar.

Great restaurants nearby; my current favorite is the JJ Hapgood Store, great old country store, beautifully renovated, with fantastic pizza oven, coffee, breakfasts, music and dining.

Great little place filled with charm and great reading materials. Owner, John, is friendly and most helpful. The barn is the creation of a fertile and playful mind.

John was a fantastic host. We loved both the location and the house itself. We particularly enjoyed the craftsmanship of the house (built by the owner), the wonderful library of books and music, and the keyboard and guitar in the house. We plan to be back!

Very unique and quirky space with clearly a lot of thought that went into its design. Great location in a beautiful area. John was great, communicative, and accommodating throughout. Highly recommend!

We loved our Labor Day Weekend stay here! The house is as exactly cute as it looks in the photos, and John was a wonderful and communicative host. As previous reviewers have noted, it was great to stay in a place that felt "homey," and to be surrounded by John's impressive library. The flower gardens surrounding the house were lovely as well. We found lots to do nearby, including beautiful hikes & visits to Manchester. We'd definitely recommend this to anyone who's looking for a Vermont getaway any time of the year!

It was really nice staying at a place where someone actually lives. Lots and lots of books, art, and cool home touches to this barn. Also we got to see birds right outside our bedroom and kitchen windows. The first floor AC runs very cool, but the upstairs will be very hot (if you're going in the summer). We suggest you put the black fan on the banister at the foot of the stairs pointing up and then the other fan pointed into the upstairs bedroom. That cools it off very nicely. The host also keeps doggie treats inside so it's dog friendly if you have one! I recommend beaching it at the Emerald Lake which is about 20 minutes away, and you can rent a kayak or canoe there. Dinner at SeeSaws was fantastic. Beautiful country views in all driving directions!

octagon house in a beautiful part of vermont

Stayed here twice to ski at Okemo; in both cases we found the place to be lovely, cozy, and architecturally unique. There was an oddball social movement in the 19th century to build octagon houses and this is one that remains. Heating is with a combination of a wall heater system and wood-burning stove. The first floor bedroom is harder to heat but our kid seemed to do fine with blankets. It’s easy to cook there w ample pots, pans, and utensils, a gas stove, and a good stock of staples. John communicated quickly and clearly whenever needed and made sure our needs were met.

Quirky home with lots of character

This was a great find for a ski weekend. The main bedroom upstairs is very spacious. Location was fine for us. Set in a peaceful location without many neighbors in sight. We drove about 25 minutes to Stratton mountain. There was a grocery store just 5 or 10 minutes drive away.
