About this resort
The Kemper Campbell Ranch is ideal for family and school reunions, company retreats, church groups, “friendcations” and all manner of friendly group get-aways. Our charming adobe guest rooms, situated in a surprising, beautiful, secluded, desert oasis in the Mojave River Valley, offer climate-controlled comfort and old-California charm. Once a get-away spot for Hollywood stars from Groucho Marx to Greta Garbo and a secluded and inspiring setting where Herman Mankiewicz wrote Citizen Kane, and still a working cattle ranch, the historic and renewed Kemper Campbell Ranch is available for just $2,500/night with a two-night minimum for any sized group of up to 48 people.
The ranch’s 22 original guest rooms feature cool, comfortable interiors resulting from the foot-thick adobe bricks guarded by massive shady porches. The buildings on the ranch are beautiful and unlike anything you’re likely to have ever seen. Our 22 bedrooms have quiet, modern air-conditioning and Wi-Fi access. Three 2-bedroom suites each share a bathroom between the two bedrooms, while the remaining 16 guest rooms each have their own bathrooms.
The ranch kitchen, a commercial kitchen in its day, once put out 3 meals a day for as many as 70 guests. While somewhat showing battle scars from its decades of production, the ranch kitchen features a new commercial refrigerator, a stand-alone freezer, a dishwasher and its original large double stove with 2 large ovens, 6 burners and a large griddle. The kitchen has all the pots, pans, equipment, utensils, glasses, plates and silverware you’ll need to feed your group. Of course, if your group is not into cooking, you’re welcome to bring in a caterer.
Our three spacious dining rooms comfortably seat 56 people. The adjacent patio has seating for an additional 40 and is illuminated with soft outdoor lighting enhanced by stunning views of the Mojave River Valley and the San Bernardino mountains.
When dinner is over your group may wish to take a page from our playbook and move into the Main House living room. This massive 2-1/2 story adobe room will blow your mind with its beamed ceiling, balcony, and huge fireplace. If you’ve got a pianist in the group, step into our family’s nearly century long tradition and enjoy the moment while he or she plays our grand piano!
Just as it was during the 45 years we operated the ranch as a guest ranch, the Kemper Campbell Ranch is a destination resort. Once you’re on the ranch there is no reason to leave. While staying there you can enjoy our amenities including:
• Swimming Pool: You and your group are welcome to cool off in our legendary 40’ X 100’ swimming pool conveniently located right next to the sports court. The pool, built in 1930, is not heated (it’s just too big for us to heat) but it’s awesome to swim in from June through September;
• Sports Court: You and your group can spend your days playing pickleball, tennis or basketball on our sports court;
• Horse Stalls and Connection to an Outfitter: For those with horses, you may (by calling in advance and making arrangements with our manager) use our 9 horse stalls while you’re staying at the ranch. There are miles of fantastic, shaded trails to ride on through the cottonwood forest on the Mojave Narrows Regional Park adjacent to the ranch. If you don’t own horses but want to ride, we can connect you to a private outfitter. Please call at least 30 days in advance. The outfitter is a separate entity and will charge you separately;
• Nature Walks and Birdwatching: Birders in your group will be astonished by the huge variety birds that can be seen on the ranch. More than 250 species of birds attracted to the area by its riverine environment have been identified on the ranch and the adjacent park. The desert and neighboring park including its ponds and 800-acre cottonwood forest, offer endless trails for walking and enjoying nature;
• Gravel Bike Roads, Dedicated Paths and Trails: Guests are welcome to bring their gravel bikes to enjoy the miles of dirt roads on and around the ranch including a road leading to a dedicated bike path from the Mojave Narrows Park up the river valley to Apple Valley and Hesperia; and,
• Places to gather: In the evenings you can hang out at the pool patio and use our double Santa Maria style barbeque to feed your crew, or like our family and friends do, sit outdoors on the Main House patio and relish the incredible views. On cold days, sit by the fireplace in the spacious Main House living room.

This place is special. I brought 17 of my leadership team to the ranch to have an immersive and interactive meeting opportunity. The way the ranch is laid out, everyone had their own personal space but we also had space together indoors, and out, to cook, eat and meet together. While it’s a drive from the nearest airport, and the trains are frequent, the location is well worth it!

Such a great area to stay for a big group retreat! A gorgeous property inside and outside. We had 40 people staying for the weekend, and loved the space and the view on the property. The ranch manager was great to communicate with and made sure that everything was good to go for us for the weekend. This property is a hidden gem in the Victorville area. We look forward to coming back.

We took our employees here for a team building event. We were a total group of 27 people. We enjoyed this property immensely! It was so clean and comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed, there are plenty of bathrooms and beds for everyone. The history of this place is well preserved and everyone that attended the event was impressed and enjoyed the stay. I would recommend this place for anyone looking for a place to stay for a larger group. Peggy was our host and she was very helpful and informative!

We had a group of 19 stay at the ranch to celebrate my 35th birthday. The property is very unique and the views from the ranch are absolutely stunning. Peggy was very helpful and easy to communicate with. The pool was nice and cool and so large our entire group only used a small part of it. Overall we had an amazing time and I would recommend this property to anyone!

As you drive in to this place you are amazed by this beautiful ranch property. The house takes you back to 1929 and you feel like you have left everything to come rest and enjoy a very unique place. Peggy was the best host. She was very helpful and was always available if we needed something or had a question. I loved how our big group could have each meal in different dining room areas to create fun new experiences for everyone. They have ACs in every room so even though it was very hot outside, we were very comfortable inside the house. And the grand pool was a great spot for our big group. I would recommend this place to anyone!

A group of 12 family and dear friends rented out the main house and an additional adjacent suite for our annual New Years getaway. We’ve done this for years elsewhere and gone from the mountains to the desert to the ocean and stayed in many beautiful places but never have we experienced somewhere so magic. The moment you come through the gate you transport through time. Our contemporary troubles faded behind us with the rest of the world, our adventurous spirit awoke and our children’s faces and minds lit up with fun ideas and potential. Those feelings lasted the duration of our stay. We were planning our next trip to the ranch before we even left. Peggy the manager was the kindest and most accommodating facilitator I’ve ever worked with. From booking request to checkout she made everything easy and seemless. Jimmy the warm ranchhand met us upon arrival and gave us an informative tour before handing me the keys and saying “it’s all yours.” It was such an incredible time that looking back at it now it almost seems like a dream we all had. One that we’ll be having over and over again for the rest of our lives. See you soon, KC Ranch ;)

Cannot recommend this venue enough!! It holds its age which makes it feel like a second home you've visited your whole life. We were incredibly impressed at how the rooms dealt with the extreme heat which was unusual for that time of year! The pool is huge, the patio is perfection, the kitchen is fun and very accommodating and is equipped to feed an army , but what makes the ranch so special is Peggy. She is the manager and her love for the ranch is infectious. We left respecting its history, enchanted by the powerhouses that had stayed there and looking forward to our future visits. We filled the place up and there was not one need that wasn't met. We would use it winter spring summer or fall because it offers many different charms. It can be used as a blank canvas that dresses up gorgeously or kept to its original rustic beauty. We HAD to play a live action game of "Clue" because the rooms are so amazing you want everyone to see them all! The train does run all night but most didn't even hear it (thanks to thick adobe walls). Out of those that did hear it, there was not one among us that didn't think it was cool, if you want you can bring earplugs. The Ranch is part of the family now and because our children fell in love with it as well, we hope it will be available for generations to come.

One minute you're driving along the 15 heading to Vegas, the next minute and just a few quick turns, you find yourself in a hidden lush sprawling oasis. Surrounded by green pastures teaming full of life (cattle, jack rabbits, frogs, crows, lizards ...) with the ranch house tucked up into the hill looking down over it all. The house itself, I'm calling it The Nancy Drew house, is awesome. Every room is more charming than the next and if you love books ... there are books in EVERY room, even the bathrooms! A kitchen outfitted with everything you need, comfy beds, 4 dining areas, 3 indoor and one beautifully lit outdoor seating area. Tons of fire places, lots of windows. We had a group of 20 women for an annual get away, 10 of us stayed in the house and the rest of us took up some guest rooms. We had a great time, it was perfect for being together or breaking off into groups. We did yoga on the lawn, went for walks down to the pasture to visit the cows, see the train up close, we swam in the giant olympic pool, cooked lots of big meals, and played board games and puzzles. It was a real retreat. I absolutely loved it and want to go back as much as I can! Thank you KC Ranch for being available for rent and being so easy to work with. PEGGY IS AWESOME!!! - Heather

We have returned to the Kemper Campbell Ranch for 3 years in a row because it is such a unique, serene setting. Tucked behind a hill, opening up to the Mojave River, we love how in just a few minutes you are out of the hustle and bustle of the city and spending time on a peaceful ranch. We have our annual holiday party here every year and everyone loves it! The management and staff are so wonderful. This is an experience not to be missed!

This is our second stay at KCR. Such an amazing place with so much character and charm. The view is beautiful and even the train added a historic touch.
Our ministry team hosted a Women’s Retreat and Peggy couldn’t have been more accommodating to us. When we had either questions or a need, either she or her helper Brittany, were on it immediately. Amazing customer service!
Looking forward to the next time for sure...Susan and the C4C Ministry team.

The property is huge and beautiful. It was so much more than we expected! The kitchen is fully equipped and the flexibility in the number of beds is nothing short of awesome. All the fires came prebuilt and the proximity to town made it really easy to get anything we needed.

This place is AMAZING! We were in search of a place that would accommodate our family reunion. We had 35 people 18 which of were children. The ranch had plenty of space for our family. The kids had lots of room to run around and play and the adults had a wonderful time hanging by the pool! We had flipping contest off the diving board and a corn hole tournament in the lawn. The kids enjoyed visiting the horses and long horns (from a distance :) The house had plenty of space for us to have our meals together and the pool area has a wonderful BBQ area. The staff was friendly and incredible. Peggy responded in a timely manner to any questions we had before and after our time at the ranch. Jimmy the handy man promptly fixed any little troubles we came across. Everyone had a wonderful time and we all look forward to planning our next trip to the ranch!!

We hosted our 12th year of family reunion at Kemper Campbell Ranch this summer and everyone had a great time. We had about 50 people ranging from 1 to 70's year-old from all over the country at the ranch and rented all 16 rooms, and everyone had something to do. The pool was the largest we've seen on a large rental property and the keepers made sure it was clean at all times. Peggy and her staff were very accommodating and very accessible. We had some trouble with some air conditioners not working and minor maintence issues but that was easily repaired. The kitchen was well equipped, although the flat top was not always very warm. The days in Victorville were hot hot hot and the pool was refreshing. We also took advantage of nearby hikes in the mornings and early evenings, as well as meeting Daisy the donkey. The train tracks were very close to the property and some people had a hard time sleeping at night as they blow their whistles day and night, but the kids loved it so bring ear plugs but this bothers you. The house has so much history and it was enjoyable learning about the history of the property. We'd go back there again!

I would characterize the property as an older rustic and quaint ranch with the amenities you should need for a quick getaway to the desert. We got to the property in about an hour and forty minutes and the directions were right on. Stores and other places were easy to get to if you either forget things of ran out of them while there.
The mansion and adjoining rooms were affordable to rent, airconiditioned, comfortable and clean. You get bang for your buck. The property manager Peggy was very helpful and quick to respond, together with the rest of the staff, proactive and got the issue with the power and main dining room airconditioner went out.
We all loved our stay and we agreed to come back next year!

What a wonderful oasis. Accommodations were perfect and the manager is extremely helpful. We rented the house for a women's retreat. Such a great environment for spending quality time with one another. Can't wait to go back.

This property is so unique, historic and charming! We held our church women's retreat here and loved it. So much room, lovely view and very relaxing. Kitchen looks funky but is a workhorse. We will be back!

My large family was going to stay at various hotels to attend a memorial service. I decided to search HomeAway to see if there was a property that could hold all 20 + of us with our last-minute travel arrangements. I found this property and luckily it became available during our stay. Peggy was so helpful in accommodating our complex travel plans as our guests arrival/departure dates were constantly changing. Sad as the situation was for our family, we all enjoyed our stay. Peggy’s assistance on such short notice was invaluable. This property is now such a memorable place for all of us. We all enjoyed learning about the history of the place. After you pass the hill from the main entrance, the scenery changes from a city street to a beautiful cattle ranch. The Main House and the Guests Rooms we rented at the Cloister and Monterrey buildings were exactly as Peggy described them - the beds were comfortable, heaters worked perfectly, all fireplaces already had wood/kindling setup when we arrived, hot water never ran out, kitchen was fully equipped so just had to bring food. The Main House has so much space with its gorgeous main living area with fireplace and beautiful wooden staircase, three separate large dining rooms, a sitting room, a separate den with fireplace, the many bedrooms upstairs and downstairs some with fireplaces and a spacious patio in the front. The Mojave Narrows Regional Park is next to the ranch. Yes, there are freight trains that run through the property throughout the day and night that blows its horn for an ungated crossing but this really adds to the charm of the place. The kids loved to watch and listen to the long “choo choo” trains go by. Our entire family truly enjoyed our stay at what we now endearingly call "The Ranch". We hope to come back again soon.

I booked this ranch for my regional conference for over 50 volunteer leaders. We maxed out every room, and set up a few cots in the "den" and "sitting room," and we still had more than enough space leftover! With sub 20-degree temperatures at night, everyone was in t-shirts inside the house because the fireplaces and heaters kept everyone so warm! The sun heated up the huge outside patio during they day, where most people spent their free time. The kitchen boasted enough room and utensils to prep all of our food and between the various additional rooms (library, den, sitting room, second dining room, front room...) we were able to have break out sessions and classes for all 50+ leaders! Peggy, the manager, was accommodating and responsive the entire weekend (not that we had any complaints or issues!). Overall, it was an amazing experience and I can assure you that Team Rubicon (Disaster Response Organization) will be back to visit...again, and again, and again! Thank You! - Mike

Perfect space for a large group-- three huge dining areas (we used a different one every night) and we loved that we could add on rooms based on how many guests were coming. We went in the winter so it was cold but can imagine the pool and tennis courts being really fun in the summer. Less than 2 hours from West LA, this ranch feels like you're worlds away. What a great spot to get away and enjoy time with friends and family. Thanks Peggy for being so responsive and a wonderful host!

Our family of six children, spouses and children were in the high desert for our mothers memorial. We stayed at the ranch for 3 nights. It could not have been better. The grand room was the perfect gathering place for us all. We have several musicians in the family and they enjoyed the beautiful piano. We all walked to the river, saw the cows and donkey, loved the trains. We will definitely plan a reunion there at a later date. Peggy was so helpful with all our needs.

What a remarkable oasis in the middle of the desert! The venue is so full of character, that which each turn you find yourself stepping back in time. The owners/groundskeeper have done a remarkable job at keeping the place in its original charm, while being sure to upgrading that which they could without taking away from the character. Peggy was so easy to work with and always accomodating where possible. A great place for reunions, church/ministry retreats or even a girls weekend away!

The property is gorgeous. I had my one wedding in the pasture and it looked perfect. The house was beautiful and I loved it's rustic look and history. Peggy was a joy to work with and very accommodating to whatever we needed. We are so happy we chose Kemper Campbell Ranch for our wedding, it was everything we had ever imagined!

We spend 3 nights and 4 days with 29 people at a Staff Retreat. The entire staff was blown away from the moment they arrive. The views of the valley with longhorn and highland cattle looks like it comes out of a portrait. Trains come by every 10 minutes or so, but it's part of the charm. The best part is being able to hang out with everyone in the Main House great room and dining areas. We cooked all our breakfasts and the kitchen worked great. People stayed up late playing board games in the main house. I think everyone wants to return next year. Unless our staff outgrows it, we'll be back.
Peggy was very helpful and prompt in her replies. If you're looking for a hotel with 5 star service and restaurants, this isn't your place. But if you're looking for a place where large groups of people can easily connect and build community, look no further. Kemper Campbell is fantastic.

We had a group of 8 families with kids ages 1-9 years old. The Adobe Mansion held us all easily. We woke each morning after sleeping comfortably in our beds. Our group fit easily around the tables in the 3 dining rooms. We loved using the huge griddle in the kitchen for our pancake/bacon breakfasts. We spent most of the day floating and diving in the pool and lounging late into the night around the courtyard under the globe lights. A highlight was having a local rancher, Lee, take us on a tractor/wagon ride through the cattle fields and around the property. He told us some great stories and history of the ranch. We woke to beautiful sunrises across the cattle ranch and took sunset walks around the property each night. Our group is planning on returning next year for sure!! Peggy is so friendly, helpful and great to work with. She made our trip a breeze!!

The Kemper Campbell Ranch is just as pictured and was an amazing place for our family together on a trip between the Grand Canyon and San Diego.
It was perfect for spending quality time together and sitting on the patio or in one of the spacious dining rooms and eating together. The basketball/tennis court and pool provided some fun for everyone, as well. It's just a short walk to the Mojave Regipnals Park for anyone wanting to get a little exercise.
My only complaint is that two of the rooms in the main house didn't have air conditioners so we're basically unusable during our stay. The trains can interrupt sleep if you are on the front side of the house, but we did find two fans in the house and that helped drown the noise. I would suggest fans in every room. ;)
The ranch is rich in history. Peggy and Laura were very friendly and helpful. We loved the ranch and would highly recommend it to any large group looking for a truly peaceful and unique place to stay.
