About this house rental
Casa Ylang Ylang is perched high above the blue Pacific, offering splendid ocean and mountain vistas. You will enjoy delightful daytime sea breezes and cooling nighttiime mountain breezes.
Awaken to toucans raiding the papaya and banana trees. Parrots, hummingbirds, and other wildlife we haven’t totally identified, thrive in the lush tropical foliage. Even scarlet macaws are sighted. ETC.
Please see pictures (I'm not great on providing narrative) and amenity list. The villa is fully equipped and ready to be lived in - please enjoy the magic that is Costa Rica.
Your stay includes free access to the Happy House.
Please note the map placement is incorrect. The house is located on the "easy side" of Ojochal, less than 3 km off the coastal highway (by car) and a half mile from the coast/beach (as the bird flies, i.e., not a walkable path). To save money, please send an inquiry rather than a reservation request.
Several excellent restaurants are located in and around Ojochal, as well as all desired creature comforts. Nearby beaches include lovely Playa Tortuga (within view), Playa Ventanas (with 5 caves), Uvita’s Whale’s Tail, and the Marina Ballena National Park. Within 90 minutes driving are Manuel Antonio (most visited National Park in CR), Dominical (great surfing) and the entire Osa Peninsula experience. Enjoy zip line canopy tours, whale/ dolphin watching, bird watching, kayaking, surfing, horseback riding, sports fishing, etc., or simply cocktails on a choice of verandas as the sun drops below the horizon fifty miles away.
Ojochal de Osa is located along the Costanera Highway 30 minutes north of Palmar Sur Airport. (daily 35 minute flights from San Jose via Naturair or Sansa.) If driving from San Jose, the picturesque trip takes 3 ½ hours.
Costa Rica Mindset:
Yes, there are bugs in CR- but these are kept under control by the breezes and the Gecko patrol. Should you happen to be bothered by bugs/geckos, you might wish to consider an alternative destination.
Driving is not recommended after dark (5:30). Unless your flight arrives in the morning, we suggest you spend your first CR night in the central valley, or along the way.
Warning: You may find yourselves setting an alarm to arise at dawn each day just to absorb ALL of the constant beauty around the remarkable surroundings of this gracious Mediterranean villa. And if you encounter particular problems during your stay, a resourceful English speaking manager resides locally just a phone call away.

Everything was great. We had some issues with the plumbing, but the property manager was very responsive in getting it taken care of.

My family and I had a lovely stay at casa ylang ylang. My kids loved the pool which we used every day except for one day of our two week stay. House is on older side so it can use some touch ups, however, it does have its charm and lots of character. The kitchen is great, we did a lot of cooking and used the grill as well. The views were amazing, sunset was beautiful to see. It’s very hot weather, could use more fans. But nights did get a bit cooler so you could get a nice rest. And pool was refreshing. Like it describes yes many bugs, it was interesting to see a new one every other day but they mind their own and yes you are in Costa Rica rich in greens and life. Gecko kept us company here and there, my youngest actually looked forward to spotting them around the house. Having washer/dryer was great, after constantly going to beach/pool/exploring it was so helpful. Definitely best to have four by four, the house is up there but again great great views! Close enough to beaches and yet nice to be in a more private residential area. Some construction nearby but I have to say, first I woke up with sounds of the many birds which is what I imagined Costa Rica would be so the construction actually was not too bad. Kenny was very nice, helpful and available when we reached out a couple of times. Thanks Kenny!! Overall the house was a wonderful part of our vacation, we very much enjoyed it!!

Great house with views, pool and wildlife. Ojochal is a great area. Host was terrific.

Pros: Nice place, well stocked kitchen, very comfortable, great pool, amazing birdwatching! Ken the property manager was helpful and communicative; Playa Ventanas. Cons: surprise $100 key deposit; landscapers weedwacking all day on the property above; was advertised as having a dvd player and movies, and the player was broken; the soda next to the super - steer clear.

Both the owner and property manager are responsive and nice. Cute property, expansive views. Has everything you need. The pool is long enough to swim. Nice straight shot on the road, 4x4 required. We didn't get to see a lot of birds, they fly by but don't seem to land close. The town itself is cute and out of the way. We enjoyed our stay!

Fabulous outdoor space
This is our 6th rental in CR, and we had a wonderful experience. Ojochal is a tiny village but has stunningly good restaurants! It's very close to uvita, which has more amenities if needed. Our favorite beach, pinuelas, is extremely close, but it's been closed for a year now. There are other lovely beaches nearby. The best part of this entire region is the beach/ mountain combo. This house is up the mountain enough you don't need a/c but you're not stuck in the clouds as much as higher locations. The drive up the mountain isn't bad, but you definitely need 4wd (needed in CR generally). It was wonderful to have a washer dryer on site with no restrictions. Many rentals in CR either make you pay for laundry or make you pay for them to do it. Beds were comfortable, kitchen utilities were good. Plenty of towels and beach towels. Anything you need that isn't provided you can bring (I always bring shampoo, conditioner, tide pods,etc..) or purchase at BM in uvita. The outdoor space at this house is top notch. The sunset, mountain and ocean views ( from multiple porches, pool, and bedroom) can't be beat. The pool receives sun most of the day. If you go too high in the mountains, you may find yourself in clouds much of the day in rainy season. That was not a problem for this location!! There are houses nearby but this house itself is totally private. There were fewer monkeys at this house...i personally did NOT mind the lack of howler monkey calls at 5am).Be warned, the driveway is very steep, narrow, curvy, and slippery!! Use 4wd at all times or you might regret it. The only other suggestion I'd make is a few more loungers (specifically on the largest patio on the north side of the house). Overall this was a fabulous experience and we hope to visit again!!

Fabulous 12 days in Ojochal
We had a wonderful, deeply relaxing time. The sunset views from the deck and pool made every night special. The house has a lot of character, and the kitchen was well-equipped and very easy to use. Kenny was very helpful getting us checked in. This place made us want to live in Costa Rica!

First Time to Costa Rica Brent and Christine
This place was everything we could imagine for our first trip to Costa Rica! Once we booked our VRBO rental the owner Diane sent us all the needed information for our stay and additional info due to Covid travel. (Very helpful!) Our host, Ken was right on time and kept us informed via Whatsapp. Thank you Ken! The scenery, critters, foliage and quiet tranquility were amazing! Great architecture and 12 ft. ceilings made it very spacious. We absolutely loved having our own pool to relax in! All of the amenities were spot on (except no hair dryer) but that's ok just wanted to mention it. The little store/deli at the bottom of the hill has pretty much everything you could ask for and more. We ate at a couple restaurants close by. Fusion's atmosphere was light and airy, drinks were good and sushi was just what we hoped for. We also ate at Beehive. The atmosphere there was very calm and welcoming! Staff and food were very nice! Also, the Waze navigation app was much more helpful than Google Maps. Pura Vida!! Hasta luego!

Beautiful property
My wife and i somehow both missed the 4X4 requirement, but it is needed. The road is not bad, but it is very steep and slippery when wet. Everything in the house functioned well, great view, large pool. Overall a very nice place to stay.

Excellent! Quiet property with a Million Dollar View!
We completely enjoyed our stay. The parrots were wonderful to see every morning and the other wildlife was also great! As a photographer I especially enjoyed the wonderful ocean view and spectacular sunsets! We visit Ojochal every six months and this was the best house yet!

Beautiful views and Sunsets
We had a enjoyable staying here. Kenny the house manager was great and helpful with anything. He even found my lost wallet.
The pool was our daily lifesaver from the heat. We enjoyed BBQing lobster, snapper, mahi-mahi and carnitas on the grill in the evenings.

Very beautiful, restful and lovely home. I love staying here, it reminds me of a little Castle
This place is lovely, the view is fantastic. It over looks the Pacific Ocean. It is nicely located close to nice restaurants and convenient stores.
We have stayed at this house 4 times in the past 5 years.
The owner and property manager are very helpful, kind and easy to work with.
I highly recommend this place.

Lovely property, well managed, spectacular views
This house is really beautiful. Lots of doors and windows to take advantage of lovely Costa Rican breezes. It has many decks and patios to enjoy its spectacular ocean views.
Notes:
-- When the owner advises a 4-wheel drive, *believe her*! Roads all over this area are very steep and bumpy. We got talked into an "all wheel drive" by Enterprise at the San Jose airport. A big mistake on our part.
-- When our inadequate car could barely make it up the hill, the property manager went out of his way to get us food and drink and get us secure for the night. Way beyond what anyone would expect. Thank you, Ken!
-- We had a couple of problems with the water heater and the internet. When we informed the manager, he got up the hill promptly and took care of the issues. (Internet is spotty all over this area, especially in high tourist season; there just isn't the electronic infrastructure we are used to. Even family members that are C.R. residents had this problem in their houses.)
-- The pool and landscaping are very well done and maintained.
-- Toucans, parrots, butterflies, and others make the hill their home, making it a very fun experience. There is even a resident iguana who lives in a post by the driveway and suns himself by the pool.
Lovely home in the prettiest spot imaginable. We would happily return and stay here if the opportunity presented itself.

Beautiful area ,lovingly maintained home, awesome hosts
My husband and I stayed at Casa Ylang Ylang for our 9th anniversary vacation. It was our 1st time to Costa Rica and Ojochal was the perfect destination. Lots of beautiful beaches, wildlife and culture. This home is a bit older, but lovingly maintained. The hosts were attentive and very responsive. We loved the patio and private pool with breathtaking views of the ocean and mountains. They made it well worth the rocky 1 mile drive up the mountainside. Only issue, if you can even call it an issue, is the lack of a/c and the number of insects. But the more we learned about CR, the more I realize that those are 2 things that sort of come with the territory :) Very enjoyable stay!

Fabulous views!
We stayed at Casa Ylang Ylang for 11 days and had a great time. The house has an excellent kitchen and we did most of our own cooking using foods bought at local farmers' markets. The pool is great to cool down in the afternoon heat and the upstairs bedroom is cool enough at night not use a fan. Ceiling and upright fans are provided throughout and the house opens up on 3 sides to breezes. The views of the ocean are spectacular, and we even saw a pod of Humpback Whales from the upstairs veranda with binoculars! Comfy beds and very nice and helpful owners who live down the hill sometimes but are unobtrusive. Also, the property manager is completely reliable and even brought us a new microwave within a couple of hours. Very convenient to various beaches, south to river tirps, national parks, etc. Highly recommended if you're looking for a tropical break with access to many tourist attractions.

Wonderful View, Near of all! I recommend it !!! A++++

Unique Place in a Nice Area
Our family enjoyed 4 nights here, the house is unique and the views are really great. You get to see the lush vegetation and mountains of the Ballena Coast from almost anywhere on the property, not to mention the ocean view. We didn't get to see the most spectacular sunsets because of weather conditions, but we enjoyed every evening by the pool and the twilight was still awesome.
Insects were not a problem and the house was fresh and cool at night without the need for A/C, there were plenty of ceiling fans and other fans when there wasn't any breeze. The house is exactly as shown in the pictures, it has lovely wood accents and a unique character. The kitchen was fully equipped with a full sized refrigerator and gas stove.
The access roads to the property were in good condition, they are gravel but seem to be well maintained by the community. It is green season, but not the heaviest rainy period, so conditions may vary at other times of the year. The house is surrounded by other luxury properties and the area seemed really safe to us.
We visited the Whale's Tale in Uvita and did a whale & dolphin snorkelling tour our first day, the second day we visited the Ventanas and Piñuelas beaches and the third day we went to the world famous Naucaya waterfall, which was definitely one of the highlight attractions in Costa Rica.
You won't regret visiting this area and this house is a very good selection.

The most wonderful and romantic week long vacation in paradise
It has taken me half a year to write this review because I have only had wonderful things to say about this property and the experience we had. My boyfriend and I met Ken, the property manager, who was more than helpful and accommodating and took us to the property. The second we arrived, we were in utter awe, by far the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen and the house was outstanding. One of my favorite things about the house was watching the sunset poolside with a cocktail in hand. Ken provided us with many recommendations of restaurants, local beaches, and activities, which was very helpful during our stay.
The house itself was beautiful. I loved the European feel situated in the middle of the jungle. It had everything we could have needed. We loved going to the local markets and cooking food at the house. The indoor outdoor feel of the house was amazing and at night we could hear the waves crash down below on the beach. We pretty much had our own tropical botanical garden surrounding us with the beautiful landscaping, it made it very hard to leave the property. We even had the pleasure of eating breakfast and seeing a handful of tiny toucans feeding in one of the flower plants about 15 feet away.
The private pool was awesome and beautiful. We spent most mornings and evenings taking a swim and then went off on different adventures. There is a veranda for every mood. Perfect for drinking morning coffee on and taking in the views and wildlife, including the green parrot ritual that many others wrote about. Very cool experience.
Rick and Diane were wonderful hosts themselves. Diane would come around the property to garden and her and Rick were staying at the guest house just below us. They even invited us in and gave us a local avocado to eat. They both were super sweet and gave us great recommendations.
Some of our favorite activities were going out to eat at citrus and mama e papas, getting roadside ceviche, the whale tail beach, the tilapia farms, kayaking, day trip to Corcovado, and finding local waterfalls to hang out at. Oojochal has some of the best food and well worth it.
We are definitely planning on coming back to casa Ylang Ylang in the near future. I still can't get the fresh Ylang Ylang smell out of my nose. Another favorite of the house :) It is about a 3 hour drive from San Jose, but beautiful and worth the trek. The surrounding towns were very cute themselves.
Thanks for the most amazing and memorable vacation!

Paradise Found!
We echo everything written by our friend, Theresa K. What an incredible week and view from this "top of the world" oasis! The activities to experience in the area abound, e.g, snorkeling, zip-lining, beachcombing, boating, etc. The quality of the restaurants rival any in Europe...compliments of the large expat community of Americans, Canadians, and Europeans. The evenings on the terrace with magnificent sunsets and cool mornings for breakfast defined tranquility and peace. To ensure we had the best possible experience, Ken Stone (property manager) attended to every question and request. In addition, Rick and Diane (owners) were visiting the area and what a privilege to meet them! Rick even provided a personal e-mail with things to do/places to see while in San Jose before returning home. We simply cannot offer enough superlatives about the home and location...or Rick, Diane, and Ken, whom we now call friends. Most certainly, we will return! Thanks "friends"....

Ojochal, Costa Rica
The two bedroom property was located on the side of a small mountain with a beautiful pool and view of the Pacific. The property was clean and had all the things needed to relax and enjoy the Costa Rican scenery. The property manager was friendly and helpful and the property owners were on sight and also friendly and helpful. We went with another couple and had a very relaxing and enjoyable time. We took the costal highway to the property which was a good road with occasional accidents and traffic slow downs. On returning to San Jose, we took the mountain highway which was also a good road and less congested. We would go back again if the opportunity ever presented itself and even got a realtor and went property shopping one day. The area has a lot of ex pats and several great five star restaurants and the overall experience was wonderful.

AMAZING!!
Our first time in Costa Rica and this home could not have been any better! We traveled with another couple and the 4 of us had a wonderful time. The home is spacious with all the conveniences of home, except air conditioning, but fans provided made sleeping comfortable. There's always a breeze, so the house remained comfortable as well as the terrace. We certainly were spoiled having breakfast on the terrace every day and the view is beyond breathtaking! The owners and Ken, the property manager, were so gracious and so helpful. They willing shared their knowledge of the area and local restaurants (which are fabulous, by the way). We loved that it wasn't "touristy" with crowds of people everywhere. I highly recommend Casa Ylang Ylang if you're interested in relaxing and enjoy being away from it all. You'll not find a more beautiful vacation home with the special treatment provided by the owners and Ken. We certainly plan to return as soon as we can! Thank you, Diane, Rick, and Ken for your hospitality. It truly was a trip of a lifetime!

Great view, lovely little village
Truly a little slice of paradise. It was our first time in Costa Rica - our daughter was working at Reserva Playa Tortuga and we wanted to visit. Casa Ylang Ylang is exactly as described, great views, well equipped kitchen, roomy. Favorite spot was the rocking chairs on the front porch. We visited Dominical, Manuel Antonio and hiked local trails. Ken Stone, local manager, did a great job welcoming us. We had a 4 wheel drive and had no problems getting around. Our friends rented a car and managed the drive up to the house with no problems. I would not recommend arriving at night. If we return to this area, we would stay here again.

A 28 day dream vacation...
Casa Ylang Ylang is definitely a place you will enjoy and it is well represented in the photos. It is close enough to the beach to see and hear the breaking waves. You will get some of the best sunset photos from the patio! Surrounded by lush well maintained landscaping with plenty of wildlife, it also has a great pool, nice full kitchen and hi speed internet! What else do you need? The house has everything you might want in an awesome location less than 5 minutes to several great dining choices or small markets. One of the owners was in town to oversee the construction of the guest house and took us out to dinner one night. Nice people! The local property manager Ken is a good guy and very knowledgeable about the area. We spent a month here and have no complaints. We'll be back.

Flavor in the Jungle
My first stay at this house and well worth the experience. I especially liked that the pool was just long enough to do laps and exercises. There is a row of purple flowers along the pool that blooms every day even though they drop their flowers every evening. Perhaps my favorite ritual was the green parrots that fly up the valley before sunset without fail. They fly mostly in pairs and converse all the way. It takes 200 of them about 1/2 hour. They add a special bonus to watching the sun set.
As it turned out, this trip I spent three weeks here alone. It was very comfortable. You can see (and sometimes hear) a few neighbors. This can add to a secure feeling overall. I found it very easy to get used to living here. I cooked almost every day in the well equipped kitchen. The many quality restaurants in the neighborhood could top a perfect day. I really liked (but not limited to) the pate' at Citrus and the passion fruit ice cream at Exotica.
The property manager, Ken Stone is very friendly and helpful. He will introduce you to some great people and Ojochal flavor of life. Ken and Sharon had me over to their home in the river valley for a marvelous pork BBQ. Ken even came and rescued me when I got my truck stuck near the beach. You can find it very easy to make yourself at home here.
As with many properties in this area, you have a few steep hills and curves to navigate. I found a 4x4 a necessity, especially if it rains. This area lends itself to have your own wheels. Some tours will pick you up but like to meet on the main highway. Do the Superman Zipline. I recommend the two Superman rides in one day option. Even the Canopy Zipline was a great day.
The beds are perhaps the most comfortable in all my stays. The house has personality and likability. Fans are all I needed to stay comfortable. The internet worked very well and cell service was decent. Flying insects are rare unless you leave the outside lights on. Then you'll have a good gecko visitation.
This spot allows for a very good combination of private yet social vacationing.

We wanted a vacation place with a view, and that is what we got. Excellent value for money for a good size and relativel well-appointed costa rica rental. Though there are neighbours, they are out of sight, making this casa reasonably private. Ojochal is a great expat town with a number of good restaurants. Great beaches are close by.
Ken is a friendly, available and helpful property manager.

My wife and I stayed here while touring the Ojochal-Uvita area. The house was a great retreat, but it was a bit of a challenge to get there. Be prepared for typical Costa Rican dirt roads and make sure you have good 4-wheel drive. The drive up and down the mountain is worth it once you see the awesome views of the bay below. This was an extremely relaxing place, which even the locals called tranquil. At night (which arrives around 5PM year round) you can sit in a cooling breeze and listen to the sounds of the nature and not much else.
5.0 / 5.0
We stayed here for our honeymoon and loved it. We were looking for something secluded where we could get away from it all, and we found it. After the first day we had trouble remembering the day and time. Exactly what we wanted. This house is beautiful, perched atop a mountain overlooking the Pacific Ocean The most beautiful sunsets you will ever see. The town of Ojochal at the bottom of the mountain is charming, & representative of the real Costa Rica. It is basically one main dirt road that runs thru the town, with another road going up the mountain to this and several other houses along the way. The restaurants in Ojochal and the surrounding area are amazing. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 4 WHEEL DRIVE!!! The road leading up to the house is a steep, winding dirt road & can be tricky without 4WD, especially during rainy season. The house is situated in the jungle with banana and papaya trees on the property, with frequent vists from toucans, parrots, hummingbirds, iguanas, lizzards, giant toads,& geckos. The house does not have air conditioning, nor does it really need it. All rooms have numerous sets of double doors and windows that open, along with fans. Once the rooms are open air, there is a constant breeze blowing thru that makes the house very comfortable. We even had to turn the fan off at night on occasion because it got so cool. Especially loved the verandas and decks, where you can sit outside in the rocking chairs and just enjoy the views, take a dip in the pool, or a nap in the hammock. It was a very relaxing trip. While Ojochal is representative of the real Costa Rica, there is a nice sized ex-pat community that lives here, with quite a few Canadians ad Americans. Ken Stone, the local property manager is of great assistance, and there whenever you need him. He is a super nice guy, and a wealth of knowledge about the area, and will help you with anything that you need. There are grocery stores, butcher shops, restaurants, a small police station, etc all located down the mountain within the community of Ojochal, to meet all of your needs. We felt very safe in Ojochal and at the house itself. The people in town are very friendly, always throwing a smile and a wave your way. I would highly recommend Casa Ylang Ylang if you want to get away from it all, experience the real Costa Rica, all while living in paradise. The views are just majestic, and cannot be properly translated into words, other than "Pura Vida". We will be back!
