About this house rental
This unique and romantic two story, one bedroom house is nestled in a mango tree. The house is an A-frame structure with high ceilings and skylights making it bright and airy. It is located less than a mile from the bohemian town of Paia and ALL of the North Shore beaches. The closest beach access is Kuau Beach, Kuau point, three blocks, and Hookipa Beach less than a mile.
The second floor bedroom has a queen size bed with French doors that open up to the private lanai and a window AC unit. The main floor has a living area with a full size futon/couch, a full kitchen and a marble tile bathroom with a jetted tub and shower combination. You can see just a small sliver of ocean from the second floor lanai, but we do not call it an ocean view. There is a patio just outside the house, with an outdoor grill, outdoor shower to remove the sand from your day at the beach and your own private parking area.
If you have a larger group, our Green Turtle House is on the same property and can be rented as a two bedroom house. Please see listing: VRBO #720946
We are a certified vacation rental permit #2017/0001.

Even though Maui is so expensive that most people do not own acreage ......the way the home was situated and gardened made it both beautiful and private at the same time. It was very close to the beach and also to Paia town. It had an upper deck and a lower covered porch so plenty of outdoor areas to relax or eat. Was the perfect space for two adults and a child.

My grandkids were born on the island, so I've had many occasions to visit Maui over the years. I love the north shore and always stay near Paia. This was my first time renting the Gingerbread House and I absolutely loved it! It was located perfectly between Paia and Ho'okipa Beach where my granddaughter surfs. It was spotless, well equipped and decorated with love. The upstairs bedroom was beautiful with a walkout onto the balcony lanai. The futon downstairs was made into a bed for my son. The kitchen had everything and the bathroom was gorgeous. Everything we needed was there. My son and I walked to nearby Ku'au Bay (5 minutes) and loved seeing the basking sea turtles. We ate dinner at Mama's Fish House (the best!) just a few minutes drive up Hana Highway. Paia is a short drive or 15 minute walk away. I would go back in a heartbeat and I would rent the Gingerbread House again.

Overall we had a fantastic stay at the Gingerbread House. We loved Paia town and the surrounding areas. The house is clean, check in and communication was great, and the guidebook found in the house is so thoughtful-we used and loved all the recs and info! We also enjoyed the proximity to the Road to Hana, Haiku, and Makawao. Additionally, the house is easy to find and property and amenities like outdoor space and laundry were all great.
Now a few things I wish I had known...The description is accurate in terms of distances, but this house is not really walkable to anything. The highway has no sidewalk and a super narrow shoulder, so this felt unsafe on the one walk we attempted. If you stay here, you'll definitely want a car even to make it to Paia or the closest beach. The other thing is that the bathroom is sunken down from the main level of the house and has a lot of slippery tile. Since this house has 3 levels, I would definitely not recommend it for anyone who struggles with balance or has mobility issues. Overall, the house is charming, but it is small and very open and the bathroom is dated and far from the main bedroom. We stayed with our 7-year-old (3 people total) and it felt very small. That said, if it is your goal to be out and explore, this is a good spot to land and is close to many awesome things.

Everything was absolutely perfect! Great location, easy to get to anywhere on the island! Feels secluded but you can walk to the closest public beach within 6 minutes! We had an amazing stay at the cute Gingerbread House in Paia Town! ❤️

Very nice place in a convenient location away from the touristy side. We stayed in February for a little over a week and loved it. Thank you.

Very cute little place, really nice for the two of us to get away. The ocean breezes made it so nice to sit outside, and the indoors was cute and cozy. It was the perfect base to explore Paia, or walk 10 minutes the other way to watch the windsurfers.

Lovely Home in an Excellent Location
My husband and I enjoyed staying at Poni's property. The house was super cute and Poni was a wonderful hostess. You are close to Paia town, with lots of places to eat and shopping - and it is only about a 30 minute drive to Kihei/Wailea if you want to head over there.

Cute, quirky, safe, and peaceful 🌺
Our family of three really enjoyed our quiet stay at the Gingerbread house. We're not resort types and we love the Paia area, so this place was right up our alley. The host communicated well on all fronts and now that we're home I really miss hearing the waves crash on the beach and send me to sleep each night! Here's my summary:
The "goods" -
*clean
*safe
*comfortable
*charming
*quiet neighborhood
*great hosts
*awesome location for nearby explorations
*good outdoor spaces (ocean views in just the right places)
*BBQ was great
*loved doing yoga each morning on the deck
The "could be improved" -
*windows/screens/AC made air circulation an art
*bathroom is outdated (but our daughter loved the tub) and could be really amazing given the space
*lighting upstairs is awkward/interesting 😜
*not the most well appointed (good steak knives go a long way)
The "can't be helped" -
*Family walks from this location just aren't safe. An adult couple could walk to nearby beaches using defensive walking skills, but we weren't about to do it as a family of three...which makes cocktail hour something we needed to be more aware of.
The rate we paid was pretty high compared nearby rentals, they just weren't available at the time we made the reservation. A bag of local coffee and a small bowl of local fruit would go a long way considering this. We would rent the Gingerbread House again, but probably not at this rate.

Great location... Needs a little TLC
This property is unique and quite private for the residential location. The lanai is DREAMY! Well equipped kitchen. Needs some attention to detail such as lightbulb replacements and window repair/replacement. Also the gutter above lanai doors needs replacing. Nice guidebook/recommendations left by owner. Also needs a bit of updating. I would give it 5 stars but fir these little details. Also, dangerous road entrance. A mirror would help. We turned right to go left. (Turn around at Ku'au Store or condos) Overall, fantastic property. Convenient to most of the Island as day trips. I would recommend. 😊

Great location, adorable cottage
The Gingerbread House was a great location very near Paia town for our family trip. The upstairs bedroom was great with direct outdoor lanai access. Quite relaxing to hear the nearby ocean waves. Downstairs the futon worked well for the kids, but would be a bit tighter with larger children. The kitchen and bath weren't "new" but were completely comfortable and functional. The lanai even felt fairly private, given the nearby Green Turtle rental and neighbors. The location gives quick access to Paia (walking distance if you're so inclined), several nearby beaches, and the perfect place to begin the Road to Hana. Overall, we had a great 3 days in the Gingerbread House and would recommend for a home base on the Paia side of the island. Mahalo!

Gingerbread House was as expected
Our stay at the Gingerbread House was as expected. I liked the bedroom being on 2nd floor as it offered better views and ventilation and it was nice to be away from the busyness of Paia. It was quiet and comfortable. Bathroom is on main level so need to be extra careful going down stairs in dark at night.

As advertised
As other reviews note, this is a comfortable rental in a good location, with good amenities (laundry, snorkel gear etc). Only complaint is microwave is rusting and should be replaced. Nearby Kuau Store market (short walk) good for sandwiches etc and Mana market in town good for takeout. Cafe Mambo great bit much-hyped Mama's is exorbitantly over priced. Don't encourage them.

Airy cottage with a cool layout. Fall asleep to the sound of the surf.

Charming, comfortable house, well-located for adventures.
My husband and I spent a delightful 4 nights at Gingerbread House. It's romantic, cute and cozy. The bathroom, located downstairs from the loft bedroom, has a luxurious open feel to it. We enjoyed the ocean breezes which waft through the large screened doors from the upper deck. It was great to be provided with everything we needed for a perfect beach day: chairs, snorkel gear, umbrella, towels, etc. The location is perfect for trips to the volcana and Hana highway. Just a few minor issues--the kitchen cooking supplies are in fair condition, making it difficult to cook a simple meal. The house is off the road and quiet, but there is a lot of traffic on the roads right around the house and it is not a particularly pleasant walk into Paia.

Delightful
Spent 6 nights at this delightful house. The house is a mile or so outside of Paia at the end of a street. Nice and quiet. Maui is all about the outdoors, and the house serves as a great departure route for beaches on both coasts, Haleakala, and the road to Hana. Nice sized bedroom on second floor with lots of natural light. Big bathroom. Smart design particularly for two. Small kitchen and living room with outdoor patio, where we ate our dinners.

Plenty of Space Indoors and Out!
Awesome evening location for kiters on the north shore. Close to Paia and the outdoor shower and area is great for cleaning and drying gear. We were in the Gingerbread in the middle of summer and it wasn't hot at night (no AC) - the fans did a great job keeping everyone cool - highly recommended!

What a charming cottage!
We booked the Gingerbread House to stay in right around our wedding. It was a beautiful place to get ready for the big day, and a relaxing place to come back to. We wish we had booked a longer stay!
It felt airy and well appointed, had plenty of parking, and suited our needs perfectly.
The stairs up to the bedroom and down into the bathroom were no problem for us, though I can see them being less than ideal for guests with balance or mobility challenges.
Overall a great spot. We’ll definitely be booking again.

Fantastic Place to Stay
I highly recommend the Ginger House it is very comfortable and the location is excellent. The attention to detail is amazing, they have sun hats, beach chairs and even yoga mats. The unit is spotless and the host is great, they really make sure your visit is perfect.

Wonderful stay!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Gingerbread House. It is so cozy and immaculately maintained. All of the available beach stuff (chairs, boogy boards, snorkeling gear) was much appreciated. Coffee on the upper deck with the view of the ocean is a great way to start the day, listening to all the birds and soaking in the relaxing environment. Paia is such a quaint little town with so many good places to eat and shop. We would love to return!

The Gingerbread House has much to admire, but......
First, the pros:
It is attractively built and furnished, and also has a covered outdoor seating area with table and chairs.
It is well equipped with fixtures (stove, microwave, refrigerator, easy access to washer and drier, TV, outdoor grill), utensils (kitchenware, laundry soap, bath soap), and wifi.
It is very conveniently located, just off the Hana Highway (Rt. 36), about a mile east of Paia town. Kahului airport is only about ten minutes away.
It is quiet and private, in spite of the fact that the highway is close by and the fact that there are several nearby houses. These are shielded by greenery and/or fences.
All in all, a very nice place to stay, and I recommend it.
The cons:
The only bed is located in the loft, up a short flight of rather steep stairs. As there is no bathroom in the loft, the house is probably unsuitable for a loft-sleeper who has to use the bathroom during the night. There is a sofa-futon on the first floor. One of us slept there and the other in the loft.
The bathroom was a challenge for the two of us - very fit and fairly fit 75 year-olds. One walks down into the bathroom over several steps. These are of shiny black tile, with no demarcation on the edges of each step. One needs to pay attention. In addition, one has to step down a rather long way into the spacious tub-shower. Getting out, when everything was wet was a challenge. And, since the tub-shower is not enclosed, the black tile floor becomes slick from condensation and dangerously slippery. None of this may bother folks more used to such an arrangement, but we found it perilous.
So, given the absence of a bathroom in the main sleeping area and the limitations of the bathroom itself, we would not stay there again. However, if you are prepared to deal with these issues, I would recommend the Gingerbread House.
