Our apartments are centrally located in the heart of Oaxaca and just a 15 minute walk to the Zocolo. The Mercado de Merced with wonderful fruit, vegetables, and arm loads of fresh flowers, is just a short walk away! Our location provides convenient access to many Spanish language schools.
The property contains the apartments, our private home in the rear as well as Alma de Mi Tierra Cooking School.
Everyone shares the same access to the main street but each apartment has their own key to the main door as well as to the apartment. Our location also has a private rooftop terrace, beautiful plantings, and ample seating to enjoy the beautiful Oaxacan sunsets.
Our housekeeper is on property daily and comes to clean and change your linens once a week. Both innkeepers speak fluent English as well as Spanish and are always available in case you have any questions or problems.
Oaxaca offers an extraordinary array of concerts, live theater, lectures and famous art institutes. Classes are offered in painting, sculpture, weaving, dance, photography, and ceramics to name a few. What a great place to stay! William and Nora are friendly and helpful hosts, giving great advice on nearby attractions. William arranged a great tour of Monte Albán for us. Nora’s cooking class was a highlight of our stay. Bella the bulldog is a sweetheart and will greet you in the courtyard. Beautiful courtyard filled with bright flowers and a rooftop terrace are available for your enjoyment. Lots of restaurants nearby and short walk to centro. We highly recommended and look forward to staying again.

'Had a wonderful time staying at William and Nora's apartment in Jalatlaco, Oaxaca! William is an excellent host and available to answer questions about the local neighborhood and the apartment. The apartment is very cozy and clean and the neighborhood is quiet. There are many wonderful restaurants very close by. We will be staying with them when we visit Oaxaca again!

William, Nora and Bella were superb! William was very helpful and friendly. We also took advantage of Nora's cooking class and thoroughly enjoyed learning about the market, the spices and new recipes.

Our apartment exceeded our expectations in every way. Super comfy king-size bed with high quality linens ensured our comfort every night for amazing sleeps. Located in one of the most colorful and interesting neighborhoods of Oaxaca City. Coffee shops, restaurants and art galleries everywhere. Wonderful hosts who are always nearby if you need anything. A super bonus, if you are a dog lover, is their beloved Bella. She loves to say hi and greet you with lots of tail wags. This apartment has everything you might need and more. A full kitchen with stove and oven. A safe, beautiful and comfortable place to call your home away from home.

The apartment is perfectly placed to visit Centro and other neighborhoods. The jalataco neighborhood is filled with beautiful wall murals. It was fun walking around and discovering them.
The apartment is a cozy place where we enjoyed using as our base to discover Oaxaca. There is also a wonderful rooftop terrace. It was the perfect spot to sit at the end of the day.

Beautiful property with a vibrant design mixed with comfort and privacy.
We were able to walk to centro and further. Nora and William were gracious hosts and eager to answer all our questions. A must to do is onebof Nora's cooking classes.

This lovely little two-room flat was a wonderful base for our 4-week stay in Oaxaca. We particularly enjoyed the rooftop terrace. The bathroom is recently and elegantly remodeled. William, Nora (and Bella!) are wonderful hosts, with wide connections among the local arts and tourist support services. William was unfailingly ready with good advice about what to do, where to eat, and etc. Don't miss the chance to take a class or a tour with Nora!
Jalatlaco is a terrific, walkable neighborhood with plenty of places to eat and a friendly market for food shopping.
The amenities present in the flat didn't quite match those listed when we booked the apartment, and we were left unclear on things like whether or not we needed to buy our own toilet paper. Not a huge deal, and easily fixed.
I do recommend that William and Nora spend an *evening* trying to dine, watch TV, work, or read in the lounge area. The cute little blue sofa is uncomfortable --the cushion literally slides out from under you, and there's no place to set a cup of coffee or glass of wine. The TV is set too high, and there's no light for reading. It would also be nice if one of the two lights hung over the table and if there were mosquito netting on the living room window to make the space usable at night. The inner lightwell porch makes the space lovely in the daytime.
Would 100% stay there again --but bring a Poang chair to sit in!

Gracious and informative host who goes out of his way to make you feel welcomed and comfortable. Gorgeous plantings throughout the Casa and on a fabulous terrace filled with plants and great views that you share with the one other apartment. Our block was beautiful—murals, flowers, immaculate and surprisingly quiet while just a block away it’s a wonderfully lively energetic place. Perfect location. Excellent wifi, immaculately clean.

We had a wonderful stay at the Gutierrez-Valencia home. Elegant, clean, quiet and with location-location-location. We came to know and love the barrio of Jalatlaco, a quintessential neighborhood of Oaxaca. William was a great, professional host who was a friendly but hardly intrusive presence on the property. His "mascot" Bella, an English bulldog, was his friendly cohort and projected a fitting image of the place--secure, observant, protective. We would always stay at William and Nora's apartment, one of the just two there.
We are already planning our return in 2023. Thanks to William, Nora--and Bella for making our long stay in Oaxaca so
memorable!

My stay in this sweet little apartment was all that was expected. William & Nora were wonderful hosts assisting in Taxi and covid testing. I loved the rooftop terrace and spent most mornings there. The neighborhood is perfect, low traffic, authentic and safe. All was good and I was most grateful.

We wish we could have stayed longer than a month at this pretty, perfectly located place. Our hosts were welcoming, responsive and helpful, and our apartment perfectly suited our needs, with lots of thought given to design elements, including storage, light, and travelers' needs. VERY comfortable bed. Apartment was decorated with lovely Oaxacan folk art and William, the hosts', excellent photographs. Other highlights - Nora, W's wife is a world class teaching artist - and her Oaxacan cooking class was fun and beyond delicious. The rooftop garden was our happy place, and spectacularly rimmed with gorgeous potted succulents. Hummingbirds visited morning and evening. Lots of restaurants and cafes nearby, and Mercado de Merced, a traditional market, is just a few blocks away. Be sure to have quesillo on your shopping list! Centro and other neighborhoods were easy walks. A wonderful place in all ways, and we'll look forward to returning.

This property is one of the nicest that I have rented in Oaxaca. The host, William and Nora were friendly and helpful. The apartment was decorated with art and colourful objects. Unfortunately, my stay was cut short by the covid19 pandemic. What was supposed to be a 4 week stay became a 4 day stay. When this is over, I would like to stay at this apartment for a longer time.

We spent 3 weeks here over Christmas and New Year and thoroughly enjoyed our time in Oaxaca. Hosts William and Nora were most accommodating and we partook of Nora's cooking class and expertise as a group tour leader. The accommodation was as described, clean and comfortable and we particularly enjoyed the shaded rooftop terrace as a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Lovely Apartment in Barrio Jalatlaco
We love this neighborhood, the beautiful patios, convenient location, and welcoming hosts. We have lived in various neighborhoods in Oaxaca over the years but Jalatlaco is our absolute favorite. We were very comfortable here for our 3 week stay!

Superb Experience!!
We spent two weeks with William and Nora in this lovely apartment and enjoyed every minute of the experience. The apartment is well situated in a charming neighborhood and is an easy 15 to 20 minute walk to Centro, the Zocolo, museums, markets, and restaurants. The apartment is thoughtfully furnished and comfortable. We felt very much at home and look forward to returning for another stay.
We attended one of Nora's cooking classes (delicious mole and tamales dolce), went with Nora on her Street Food walking tour, and retained her to guide us through Mitla and Yagul. Aside from being a charming hostess, Nora is an accomplished chef and a very knowledgeable (and licenced) guide to the historical and cultural sites of the area.
William is a gifted photographer with a keen eye for capturing the essence of the Oaxacan Valley. We had many interesting discussions about his work.
All in all, this was one of those experiences that we anxiously look forward to repeating.

William and Nora are wonderful hosts. Nora's cooking lesson with a trip to local market was very informative and fun and delicious. William had excellent advice on everything from dentists to swimming pools to gyms to laundry, as well as local restaurants and sites to see. The neighborhood is delightful with interesting restaurants, coffee shops, murals, a church, cobblestones and it is close enough to great market, zocalo and Santa Dominigo Church. Highly recommended!

We really enjoyed our time in this cozy, quiet, clean, and prettily decorated apartment. It was a relaxing place to come home to, to read, cook, or have a glass of wine on the roof terrace, and was just a 20 min. walk from the center of town. William, our host, was cordial, responsive and helpful, directing us to restaurants, a good laundry service and the nearest market. His wife, Nora, runs a great cooking school, Alma de mi Tierra, from their house next door, and taught us to make a delicious Oaxacan meal. She is also a licensed guide and specialist in textiles, and helped us select a beautiful hand loomed rug on our tour. We plan to return and stay here again.

Charming, quiet and easy
Lucky to land this quiet kitchenette during dias de los muertos 2018. The historic Jalatlaco neighborhood is charming. The hosts are beyond knowledgeable, guide extra special tours and teach cooking classes right here. We spent every early morning reading on the terazza and felt really safe walking home from the zocalo late at night. We would definitely stay here again on our next trip to Oaxaca. Thanks so much Will and Nora!

Excellent choice!
My daughter and I spent 9 lovely days at this property. The apartment is cozy; everything works as it should and the Wifi is excellent. The exterior area is beautifully landscaped and quiet. We cooked occasionally with vegetables and staples that we bought at the nearby Merced Market. William and Nora, the owners, were very helpful with tips about local attractions and were kind enough to book a taxi for us that arrived on time, for our very early return flight. I would happily return here on a future trip to Oaxaca.

Friendly host, property as advertised
We spent five weeks here and found the apartment to be just what we wanted. It was quiet and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the rooftop deck in the evenings. Our host, William was extremely helpful prior to our arrival. We had planned to spend a week in Mexico City before visiting Oaxaca but a major earthquake forced us to go to Oaxaca a week early. William managed to find accommodations for us very nearby. William is an American who has lived with his wife in her hometown of Oaxaca for many years so they proved to be a great source of advice for everything from restaurants to where to get our laundry done. This was a very good experience and we would stay here again, were we to return to Oaxaca.

Our 1 bedroom apartment was beautiful and comfortable. We loved being able to cook, and took a class with Nora at her cooking school. The apartment was located close to La Marced Market, and a short walk to downtown – its close to everything ! Oaxaca is a beautiful city with a lot to see and do and close to other market towns. We loved being there - we have booked for March of 2018 ! A faulous place a great vacation and the rooftop deck is beautiful !

Sweet Garden Respite
My best friend and I just returned from a week stay in Oaxaca. We stayed with William and Nora in one of two apartments they rent to travelers and those taking tours and classes with Nora. Oaxaca is my favorite location to visit in the entire world, and the location and environment they provide within the city is absolutely perfect.
We spend our days reveling in the sights, sounds, tastes and culture of Oaxaca and it felt so welcoming and calm to reenter this oasis at day's end. You enter the front door of the home into a charming garden space. The apartment itself is clean, comfortable and VERY quiet. The beds are comfy, and the kitchen is adequately equipped. There is also a beautiful little rooftop garden patio as well. The location is great, within walking distance of the historic center of Oaxaca, and many other areas of interest.
But the best part of Alma de Mi Tierra, are the hosts, William and Nora, who were extremely genial and helpful in every way without being obtrusive. They gave us restaurant recommendations, (so fantastic), helped us to get laundry done, directions, etc., etc. They made us feel welcome and comfortable. I would love to return and do some cooking with Nora and learn even more about Oaxaca and it's warm, vibrant culture. I can't wait to return.

Wonderful
Exactly as pictured, in a quiet location that is an easy walk to all old city areas. Close to a market and the zocalo.
Our hosts were a wonderful help to us. They made suggestions and gave us a map to get oriented. Both William and Nora were very friendly and helpful. Nora is a guide and does a wonderful job with tours of local craft villages. She also offers cooking classes which we will make time for on our next trip.

Wonderful host! Very comfortable apartment and location.
We greatly enjoyed our stay in Oaxaca in part because of the comfort of this apartment: very quiet street, close to the center, and nice apartment with vernacular touches. Additional fun was access to the roof terrace and lime tree... The host provided all the necessary basics including drinking water. One discomfort for "spoiled newyorkers": low water pressure.
