Essay by Susan F. - an 85 year old guest

…an aerie hanging in the treetops above a lake…

From the Lakeside dock:

Truly. Toad Lake has polliwogs.

A brown duck (which?) dashes for brush-cover. Two tiny ducklings follow her. (Are they really running across the surface?) They leave spidery wakes.

Dragonflies hover, dart. Butterflies flutter, alight, open, close. Yellow Irises cluster.

A woman suns on an inner-tube. A woman swims laps. A man, standing in the lake, plays fetch-a-stick with two paddling dogs.

A kayaker. Another kayaker with a fishing rod.

On the far shore, any time of day, people are fishing. Slanting light makes colors fluorescent: blue (beach chair), orange (vest), red (SUV), all repeated upside-down in the lake surface.

Bald eagles glide high above. Another raptor (which?) soars.

Swallows (which?) are skimming.

Robins and song sparrows are singing everywhere. More birdsong. (Whose?)

Timeless northwest forest trees that taper, are mirrored on the lake’s surface as wavering blocks of modern art.

Eight Canada geese form a flotilla and head to the far shore, reconnoiter on land, then slowly make their way to the small decaying raft beside us on the pier. They nibble at the covering of green growth and then depart. The geese have left the raft unstable. Untethered, it floats slowly into the middle of the lake. And then, where?

An alligator (?) with brilliant gold eyes drifts to the middle of the lake, then hides on the far side. He is retrieved by kayak, - that thrilling, life-size, plastic alligator head that was meant to keep the geese away.

From the Dwelling:

Look down on the top-feathers of swallows (which?), turned golden in the sun.

Catch sight of two young bucks with furred stubs of antlers strolling down the driveway.

Later, read by lamplight in chairs before the fireplace. One book can be passed between the two of you to share, reading aloud.

Sleep on a queen-size perfect mattress.

Brew morning coffee and take the morning easy in

The lake is clean and warm enough to swim comfortably in. The cabin is spacious with lots of windows and modern amenities that give it a luxurious feel. Everyone enjoyed their stay! Just FYI, this is not for mobility challenged people, lots of stairs are the only way to access the cabin.

The location served as a perfect location to split the summer trip between Seattle and Vancouver. My children and wife felt it was actually the best stop we made, which included fancy hotels in the two afore-mentioned cities as well as Whistler and Victoria. The lake is remarkable with tall, forested walls on all sides of a deep, cold and very clear lake. Use of watercraft, floaties and a dock was a wonderful perk, certainly. The home was refurbished, clean and filled with nicely appointed touches that made cooking meals a pleasure. The local downtown is close and accessible, but the chalet location feels far removed. In fact, the nearby homes were not even visible unless you were out on the lake.

Thank you for sharing your cabin! We really enjoyed the water toys provided as well as the paddle boards that we brought along. The cabin is very quiet and right on the lake. The kids enjoyed having the loft upstairs to themselves. The kitchen was well used and the tiny dishwasher worked overtime for our family of 6. We spent a lot of time on the lake, but also enjoyed the proximity to restaurants and shops. We hope to visit again.

Sticky coasters Outside tables not clean I’m a house cleaner… makes me wonder if it’s possible to save on the cleaning fee by doing it myself - better. No real coffee just super old instant Recliner needs to be replaced (very uncomfortable) A good sharp paring knife would be nice One very large saucepan… a small and or medium one would be good to have. I was surprised at the price and 10/10 rating considering the age and quality of the furniture and the place itself. Maybe 6-7… certainly not 10. Some working binoculars would be nice Lotion would be nice Dishes in the cupboards are dirty (really dirty. I have a very high tolerance for dirt) Put how to find the kayak paddles in the details… we never saw them and were told they were “outside” Melanine dishes don’t work in the microwave. Great games!! Deodorant shampoo conditioner body wash… very nice. No clean up instructions for check out … very nice Overall I’d stay again but I think it’s over priced (mostly because it was not clean and the cleaning fee is HIGH).
