About this house rental
Tierneevin, Gort, Co Galway, Ireland
Shawe-Taylor's Old School House is a wonderful place for golf, walking and relaxation. The name Tierneevin is an Irish word meaning 'A Beautiful Place', so the name speaks for itself. This is a most luxurious building and we are very proud of the finish provided. We are certain that our discerning guests will enjoy holidaying in this beautiful part of Ireland. Charming period school house (ca. 1820), recently restored to its original splendour. Eco friendly interior finished with breathable products such as lime mortar on walls, pitch pine and traditional flag on floors. Insulated throughout, the schoolhouse has a high energy rating. With its cathedral style ceilings, wooden beams and a mezzanine/balcony bedroom, it is beautifully presented with antique furniture throughout, adding enormous warmth and character. This is a wonderful place to get away from all the stress in an area of outstanding natural beauty and geology.
Ideally suited for a golfing and/or walking holiday. Gort Golf club is literally on your doorstep with very reasonable rates available, and an excellent clubhouse and restaurant. This superb 18 hole Championship Golf Course is set on 160 acres of picturesque parkland, overlooking the Burren and the Clare Hills. The Golf Course was designed by the 1989 Ryder Cup hero Christy O'Connor. It consists of four outstanding par-3's, a testing par-5 ninth and a terrific par-4, carved through by Burren stone and natural waterways. From the property you can take a delightful 3 mile circular walk, which runs through the Burren landscape. The scenery, birds and wildlife, botany, geology and archaeology - all can be enjoyed on this short walk. Also close by is Kilmacduagh Monastery with several churches and a round tower. The Monastery was established in the 7th century by Saint Colman Mac Duagh, hence the name Kilmacduagh (the church of the son of Duac). Kinvara and Ballyvaughan are nearby fishing and farming villages both on the edge of Galway Bay. For shopping there is Galway City and Ennis, both only 20 minutes' drive from the property. There are many fine restaurants close by in Gort and Kinvara.

Great location lovely cottage

This place was amazing. John is friendly with a wonderful sense of humor. The schoolhouse is just gorgeous, cozy, and inviting. Anything we needed could be found in the house. And the two donkeys stole our hearts. We fed them the first day and they called for us at the gate every morning and evening. (They love carrots!) There are ruins of a monastery a short drive away, well worth a visit. The location is very central to any of the sights. Careful of the narrow roads if you are driving and stay cognizant of the little pullovers. You might have to back up!

Beautiful setting for this cottage! We loved our week stay and had a great base to travel in this area. There was plenty of room for 6 adults. We also had so much fun feeding the family donkeys!! Please note that the property is not in the city area of Gort (like the map shows)-it is a few miles outside, in the country. Our family hopes to be back soon.

We would stay here again, much nicer than online photos depicted!

Very friendly hosts, house is large enough for a Family and utterly clean. All sights at Ireland‘s West Coast are easy to reach because it is close to the motorway. Shops and Restaurants are close by. The Hosts had lots of great tips! We will happily come back!

Fantastic house with amazing history. Perfect location for traveling around the west. Absolutely loved our stay

We really enjoyed staying in the school house converted into a family home. It felt very spacious and warm and inviting as if we were at our own home. Brid welcomed us and showed us how to work everything. Some of it was different for us coming from the States so the tour was appreciated. We recommend this house rental 100%!

There were 4 of us. Originally I thought the property was closer/or in town. It is not. You are about 2km from town. But that is ok. This place is really nice, we loved it. From this location, with a rented car, Ireland is your oyster. We day tripped from the house in every direction, plus Gort has a rail connection and Dublin is an easy trip away. The accomodations are spot on and John is a helpful host. We would rebook in an instant.

This was our first trip to Ireland and it couldn’t have been better. The old school house was just what we were looking for. John was so helpful with places to see. He told us about the Burren Perfumery so we drove out to it. The drive alone was wonderful. The perfumery was excellent, can’t wait for the production be delivered home. I would stay at the old school house anytime!
Thank you John, for a wonderful visit to Ireland!

It was a quiet place, around the corner from a Catholic Church, where we attended Mass. It was charming. Isolated from the hurly-burly of the town of Gort. Beds were comfortable and kitchen was superb. Living room was large and comfortable and plenty of shelf space for all our daily stuff.

Wonderful stay in beautiful property which was scrupulously clean. More written instructions inside the property would be helpful.

We had such a nice Week in the old School House, which was lovingly furnished and very good equiped. The introduction through the Owner was very nice and helpful with lots of recommendations for many things. We loved the scenerie around and felt so comfortable there.

John and Brid were so very kind and the home is absolutely gorgeous. We loved our stay and enjoyed all the comforts of home and more in this lovely home. We are very grateful to John and Brid for making us feel right at home. We had a fantastic trip and loved our stay.

Loved staying at John and Brid's schoolhouse. It was comfortable, clean, great location, beautiful, with the cutest little neighbors (donkeys) that we enjoyed visiting with each day. 😀 John met us for check in, and gave us great tips and recommendations for food and places to see, as well as a little history on the schoolhouse. He was very kind and welcoming, and provided great communication prior to our arrival. Just wonderful all around!

My husband, daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter (4-1/2) had the good fortune of staying at this beautifully renovated Irish schoolhouse. It far exceeded our expectations. It was spacious, warm and furnished with many period pieces. The kitchen was well stocked with everything you would need; the landscape was beautiful and the neighborhood quiet. It was an easy drive to Galway and also the Wild Atlantic Way. Our host met gave us great restaurant locations and things to do in the area. As a bonus, the neighbors had 2 donkeys that we all, especially our granddaughter, enjoyed feeding carrots each evening. We would highly recommend this gem as a great place to stay in Ireland and we would certainly book it again in the future.

We recently stayed here for 2 weeks and could not reccomend it enough. The Casey's are very gracious hosts who are willing to help and full of knowledge about the surrounding area. The house is located close to the beautiful scenery of Coole Park and the property itself is clean, cozy and well stocked with everything you need for your stay. On our arrival to Gort via bus, John was gracious enough to pick us up and even stopped for groceries. He also gave us a full rundown of the property and surrounding area once in the house. The property houses two Donkeys who love to nibble on carrots and apples. (so keep some on hand) The house itself has a lot of charm and I would have no problem renting it for future vacations if available. We would like to recommend that if staying here you rent a car as it is much easier to traverse the area with one, however there are great taxi drivers in Gort who are friendly and punctual, with our favorite being Sheila. There should be a card in the Kitchen with her phone number. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who is hesitant about renting this property. It is well worth it.

Vacation in Ireland
A truly delightful property—great location and wonderful hosts! We felt so much at home, saw a great deal of County Clare and some of County Galway, and will make certain to return for further adventures! Thanks so much to John and Brid for their warm welcome!

We paid EUR 770.44 for our four days stay with two people. The house is nice, but we could not enjoy it since it was so dirty and had this overall grimy smell. We are surprised that no official body checks on rental accommodations and whether they are suitable for guest stays.
Recommendation: Replace all toilet seats and all fittings in the bathroom and invest in new toilet brushes. Remove all furniture and clean the house thoroughly from top to bottom. An 18th Century Historic School House like this does not deserve to be so neglected. And paying guests don’t deserve to be made a fool of.
When we arrived, we were welcomed warmly by a friendly neighbour who gave us the keys. So far so good.
This house was so dirty/unkempt. Shortly after arrival we messaged the host and told him about our experience. John offered we can leave and get a refund. We did not leave since we were not in a postion to waste precious vacation time. He played the generous host, when he actually was somebody who knows that guests have no choice other than to stay.
-Kitchen: Grimy sink, food crumbs all over the place. Wine stains and food crumbs plus pubic hairs in the fridge.
-Sofas in the living room had stains, and there were hairs on the sofa. The dining table was so grimy and dirty.
-Bathrooms: Toilet seats were stained yellow from overuse and urine. There were tons of hairs in the shower, grimy sinks, and a grimy smell throughout the property. On the last day, when I used the last towel, I found a tooth flossing tool lying beneath it.
-Downstairs bedroom: We found bedding stained. Blinds torn. The price tag on a lampstand (EUR 15). One of the sideboards was pushed against the wall, it was too large, but the problem was solved with it being pushed against the wall only halfway.
We can’t recommend a stay at the 18th Century Historic School House if it is in this state. I took photos and would love to show evidence of the state of the house. If John wants to take me to court for writing this. Please go on. Vrbo please check this property.

A warm and welcoming home in the country.
We had a warm welcome from John to his beautifully renovated schoolhouse. The property is in a peaceful, rural setting and the house had a very warm and homey atmosphere. The kitchen was well equipped, and the dining room table was a great meeting place for all our family. The laundry worked great for the six of us. The location of the property made it easy to reach most of Clare and Galway Counties and the sites we wanted to see in a short time. If we had any questions, John responded promptly through a phone call or a text. It was a wonderful two weeks, and we would highly recommend a stay at the School House.

Wonderful House, wonderful stay
Our stay in this property was more than we could have hoped for. The house is larger than it seems, and the living room is fantastic for entertaining as well as huddling up to a warm fire. The house is finished to a very high standard and was spotlessly clean, Our children ( 8 &12) loved the upstairs bedrooms and all the nooks and crannies these older houses contain. All out dealings with with John and Brid were friendly and professional. We look forward to staying again!

Lovely Area
A beautiful home located in a lovely area that is also very convenient to Gort.

Great property in Galway/Clare
Lovely property in a nice and quiet location in Galway and near the Clare border. All the essentials are included which is great. Negative was that the WiFi was not great but this is to be expected in a rural location. Highly recommend for a relaxing getaway.

Staycation Galway 2021
We had a great time in Galway and Clare as the house is so near the Clare boarder, the house is amazing and only a few mins drive to Gort and the beautiful little town of Kinvara, I would highly recommend.

This is an amazing property, it far exceeded our expectations. The location was great, 5 mins from Gort and 10 mins from Kinvara.
The house was equipped with everything we needed. The 4 bathrooms were spotlessly clean and lovely fluffy white towels provided. The outdoor area was lovely and the donkeys were a great attraction to all of us. All in all I would highly recommend this property.

Idyllic
We were welcomed by John and Brid. We really enjoyed the warm welcome with fresh eggs provided as well as lots of handy kitchen s staples such as salt pepper, cling film, tin foil, dishwasher tablets, washing machine and dryer with liquid for washing machine. We loved thatevery bathroom was stocked well with toilet roll, and shower gel. It was a gorgeous clean house, we felt privileged to stay in it. We enjoyed many excursions around the Burren and Galway and it was the perfect base, though most trips to beach, Doolin etc were at least 30 mins drive away so be prepared for that if you've small kids. The Burren Nature Sanctuary was very nearby, a lovely place to bring the children. Kinvarra was a quaint little town and we enjoyed it and its surroundings too. The two donkeys at the paddock behind the property were a big hit with the children and they were delighted with them. We were delighted also that we could bring our pet labrador with us, and he enjoyed meeting and getting the donkeys, getting quite friendly with them by the end of the trip!
Highly recommend this property and thanks so much to Brid and John for letting us stay in their beautiful home with such attention to detail.

This house is quite superb. It is spacious, very well maintained, with every possible facility. It is even better than the pictures on the site imply. The house is set in a beautiful location, with wonderful views all-round. One can go on delightful walks nearby or further afield into the Burren. There were very useful guidebooks and maps on the locality, left in the house. and we all became fascinated with the flora of the Burren. The nearby town of Gort is thriving with every type of shop and restaurant. There is a beautiful and easy river walk beside the town starting at the Aldi carpark. From the house you can easily travel to the Burren, Ailwee Caves, Ennis and Galway.
We were sad to leave this house and the friendly donkeys in the adjoining field -- they have an endless appetite for carrots, apples and pretty much any other fruit or vegetable! Finally, the owners, John and Bríd were very welcoming and helpful, and gave us a run-through of all the amenities when we arrived -- not to forget a thoughtful gift of local farm eggs!

Fabulous!
This is an absolutely beautiful house in a perfect location to visit (by car) many beautiful attractions. John, the host, is a gentleman- very helpful and easily contactable. Thanks John and Brid, we have fallen in love with this part of Ireland and definitely intend on returning!

Very well kept house, very spacious and very clean and extremely comfortable beds. Unfortunately we all found it very difficult to try to work the induction cooker and as local hospitality hadn't fully opened we found we had to drive for miles before we found anywhere decent to eat out. With regards to heating and cooling the house we really never got that working either. There was an old fashioned timer switch which we couldn't read as numbers on it were so tiny and hard to read, and on the other hand when we looked to open a window to let air in they were so high up we couldn't reach them so had to leave doors open
Overall it was a very nice house, but maybe more attention to detail to be taken into consideration.
