About this cottage rental
Our beloved Lavender Cottage in a nutshell:
- it is cosy and perfect for a relaxing getaway - with or without kids or furry friend in tow
- it sleeps up to 6 people in 2 bedrooms: the larger of the two features a double bed and a chair which folds into a single bed, if required; the second has a double bed with a single bunk above
- open-plan living area with a wood heater for chilly nights (think a cup of chsi, fluffy warm blanket and great book) and reverse cycle air-conditioning for gorgeous but hot summer days (please note that we do not provide firewood but there is plenty of kindling made available to you; wood can be bought by the bag in town or nearby Tarwin Lower; if you aren't a fireplace kind of person: our split system will keep you toasty)
- polished Jarrah floors
- large windows allowing you to enjoy the tranquil, lush native garden from the comfort of your bed as well as the two sofas
- a cupboard full of games, a ridiculous amount of DVDs, CDs, books and magazines - kids and adults - will ensure plenty of entertainment; we also have Lego, dolls house stuff, a wooden train set, building blocks that would make Rudolf Steiner jealous and, and and
- a large deck complete with hooded BBQ and outdoor setting
- AND (kids beware :-) ) nestled in the garden under its own veranda and with its own deck, is a restored pop-top caravan – the perfect place for the kids to hang out (or the parents to hide); attached to the caravan is a gigantic dolls house; there is also an large trampoline in our garden.
- our fenced garden backs onto Cape Liptrap Coastal Reserve: leave the back gate and you will be on your way, over the sand dune, through the coastal bush, to the breach (about a 10 minute walk away from Number One beach which is a patrolled beach during summer ) - but please note that the 15 minute bush/sand dune walking adventure may not be suitable for young children or people lacking fitness; you may encounter snakes during the walk which starts with a short steep section that requires climbing over or ducking under some tea tree bushes. There is a more accessible path nearby ;)
- equipped with a washing machine, microwave, flat screen TV and CD/DVD player
- and while off the beaten track, is within easy distance to Venus Bay’s shops and restaurants and the 24 km stretch of Venus Bay‘s wild and magical ocean.
For details on the beach including patrol arrangements please see https://beachsafe.org.au/beach/vic/south-gippsland/venus-bay/venus-bay
Please note: we operate on tank water and therefore do not provide linen and towels, including tea towels which we ask our guests to bring with them. We do provide doonas and pillows and warm blankets.
What to do
? Walk to the beach over the dunes and through stunning bush via Lavender Cottage’s own access path – simply follow the shells in the trees
? Grab your boogie board and let yourself be carried away
? Sit in Lavender Cottage’s native garden, listen to, and watch, the abundant bird life
? Have a jump on the trampoline or check out our giant dolls house; read a book, play a board game or watch a DVD by the fire place
? Visit the boat ramp in the 3rd estate, go fishing, play on the playground or simply admire the sun set
? Enjoy the numerous out of town attractions/activities, including visiting the Inverloch Bunurong Environment Centre (27 km) to walk in the steps of dinosaurs, going on a tour of the Wonthaggi coal mine (38km), driving along the stunning Bunurong Coastal Drive marvelling at its rugged sandstone cliffs and sandy coves, stop by at Alison Lester’s gallery in Fish Creel (25km) - if you are a parent ‚Are we there yet’ will most likely already be on your bookshelf, if not you will want to buy it just like any of Alison’s books - or visiting the iconic Wilsons Promontory (80km)
Dog friendly
Lavender Cottage’s garden is fully fenced. Though we do note that Venus Bay's local wombat population is not impressed and has dug a number of holes underneath the fence which we have attempted to block (more or less successfully). If your dogs are escape artists, our garden is not the place for them, unfortunately. Well behaved dogs are allowed inside (but not on the furniture). Dogs are allowed on leash on No 1 to 5 beaches. Restrictions apply during summer (see photo for details). Please note that dogs are not allowed on the beach that can be accessed via, and including, Lavender Cottage's access path. There is an off-leash area on a further beach/wetland, about a 10 minute drive from Lavender Cottage (Doyles Road beach) where the Tarwin River meets the sea.

Our first time visiting Venus Bay and the South Gippsland area, and this was a perfect place to stay as we explored the region. Very quiet area, especially in the winter season, and the house is easy to keep warm. Very well set up with not only the things you need (eg. plenty of pots and pans and crockery), but tons of stuff to enjoy as well (huge selection of DVDs, lots of books, some CDs) and thoughtfully decorated with nice lighting, artworks and so on. In short, it feels like a home. Lovely garden and outdoor setup too, including a small caravan for kids to enjoy. Take the private beach path challenge out the back if you are fit and have good hill climbing and descending skills!

The stay suited our purposes of reviewing our block in Venus Bay. It will be nice to experience the area more fully when we have a place of our own set up. In the interim, this was a pleasant place to be. The walk out the back gate through to the beach was fun.

Lovely cottage, very close to Venus Bay shops. Gorgeous garden and deck to enjoy while taking in the surrounds. Quiet location, though close to the stunning beaches of the bay. Enjoyed a trip to Inverloch and a monthly farmer's market at Koonwarra, both around 20mins drive. Overall a fabulous place for a getaway, highly recommend it.

Our 2nd stay here, it’s a very relaxed and cosy cottage.
This time we had two of our Granddaughters with us and they loved the bunk bed, the games and books that were there. They explored the caravan cubby in the back yard and we were impressed we could play CD’s in there too.

Maybe should be called "Protea Palace". No, just kidding.
Lovely garden and EVERYTHING supplied in the cottage.
Our dog even met the resident wombat! To his great astonishment. Would thoroughly recommend the property to any potential guests.

Nice cozy place! The woodfire heater was a bonus especially during the cold evenings. Peaceful location. Close to beach & shops.

Cute little place. It was a pity that we had to bring our own linen and firewood as we are from interstate but otherwise a nice place to stay.

Sweet cottage with a lovely garden in beautiful Venus Bay.
The caravan out the back was a great space for the teenagers, as was the waffle recipie and maker, which they used with delicious results.
A lovely secluded spot that is walking distance to shops and surf beach and a short drive to the inlet for rowing and fishing. We'll be back!

Homely cottage with most things you need for a beach holiday with kids and dogs.
Could do with a mattress update, de-cluttering, and some attention to detail around cleaning. Mozzies were out in force and we couldn’t quite keep on top of them overnight.
Nice and cool but dark inside. Didn’t need to use heating or cooling.
Had everything you needed in kitchen and lots of books and games and dvds. Deck also lovely but caravan area needs a bit of a clean up.
Good value though overall.

Lavender Cottage presented just as the photos and description. We found it such a cosy and inviting place for the quiet and relaxing stay we needed.
Loved the wood heater, reclining on a couch each, listening to music and watching movies from CD’s and DVD’s supplied. The garden was lovely and listening to rain on the roof while going to sleep was bliss.

Fantastic communication and instructions from the owners.
Our family loved the cottage and it’s location. The kids loved the trampoline, caravan and all the books and toys. We enjoyed the track to the beach and having the beach to ourselves when we made it there. Thanks again for the great holiday location.

For me personally there were too many objects cluttering the property these gather dust (unfortunately on a dirt road) bedroom too cluttered with chair and dresser making it very difficult to get around a double bed (not expected for the $$) Toilet needs maintenance as does the fly wire door openers (not working or lack of) bathroom basin outlet not clean and personal loofas and used soap left in shower (health hazard) I did not expect to supply the wood for the wood burning heater. Outdoor area was really good and perfect for our little dog. Not a totally awful stay, would be better with a few improvements.

We really enjoyed our stay here so convenient to everything and so very peaceful! Met the resident wombat who is huge but really a gentle giant. Townsfolk are also very friendly and welcoming, highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for some peace and quiet in a rustic hideaway.

A very cosy, comfortable cottage in a great position. Garden was lovely, if weather was more favourable we would have loved to sit out on the deck area. Very enjoyable couple of days.

Home away from home
We first visited this property 4 years ago with young children at the time, we have wanted to return ever since. The cottage has more dvds, books and magazines than you could ever get through in a life time, gorgeous caravan out the back and a wonderful trail out the back gate that leads you to a secluded beach. What more do you need? Comfortable beds, lovely hot shower and a wood fire heater when it gets cold. It is a much loved place to stay at. We will be back :)
