About this cabin rental
Our home is the perfect place for couples, families and even a couple of families (sleeps 6!). With an outside deck, grill and view, it’s a perfect for grillin’ and chillin’.
On colder nights, especially in the winter time, the cozy living room is a perfect place to have a fire and watch a flick on the flat screen. (Don’t worry about having to truck in firewood in the back of your car…we have an ample supply ready and waiting for you!)
Kids (and maybe even the adults) will enjoy the loft with 2 bunk beds - a perfect place for a slumber party. Equipped with TV, VCR and video games, they may just never come down!
And if work calls…or you need a few days of ‘tele-commuting’, the wifi and Internet access are a bonus. Come and stay, work or play, we are sure you’ll love our house as much as we do!
Our cabin at Black Bear Resort is the perfect place for weekend getaways, family vacations and family reunions. Come and enjoy the great amenities that Black Bear Resort offers. These are all available to you (at no extra charge). Enjoy the great outdoor swimming pool (with an incredible view of the mountains), play a few tennis matches, take in a round of mini golf or try your skill at the well-stocked fishing pond and let your children play to their delight at the childrens’ playground.
Or venture further afield and enjoy the wealth of natural resources and diverse outdoor recreational options: Blackwater Falls, your choice of two great ski areas: Timberline Ski Resort or Canaan Valley State Park; Seneca Rocks or the Monongahela National Forest. From Black Bear you are only an hour’s drive from world famous Seneca Rocks and the two awesome caverns, Seneca and Smoke Hole. In nearby Elkins, ride the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad excursion train.
Close by, the small communities of Davis and historic Thomas, WV offer some great eats. We have the house stocked with a listing of our favorites from which you may choose.
Spring: February through June heralds the best fly fishing in the Potomac Highlands. Late spring is our favorite time for bird and wildlife watching and photography.
Summer: In Canaan Valley, cool mountain temperatures make Canaan Valley and the surrounding area the perfect summer retreat. Hikers and mountain bikers gravitate to the west banks of the Blackwater River for the 10+ mile stint between Thomas and Hendricks and the sensational views of Blackwater Canyon.
Fall: The mountains (and valley) blaze in mid-to-late September. Beech, oak, cherry, maple and aspen take on hues of reds, golds, oranges and browns, accented by the dark-green background of evergreens.
Winter: Winter brings another world of its own where the Canaan Valley turns into a Winter Wonderland with great skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and sledding/tubing from a choice of over 76 slopes and trails, seven lifts, a terrain and tubing park at two of the best West Virginia ski resorts: Canaan Valley Resort State Park and Timberline Four Seasons Resort.
West Virginia…so far, but yet so close…Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. Our cozy cabin at Black Bear Resort (BBR) is surrounded by Federal Wilderness land! Escape to this beautiful neck of the woods that is less than an 3 hours from Pittsburgh, PA or Charleston, WV. And now, thanks to the new super highway, aka Corridor H, less than 3 hours from Washington, DC!
150 miles (3 hrs) from Pittsburgh
180 miles (3 hrs) from DC
300 miles from Columbus, OH
**Update: Many of our recent guests have appreciated the extra 1/2 bath (toilet only), new fridge and upgraded outdoor lighting. They also liked the fact that there are only TWO steps up from the driveway to the house (other houses have 10 or more steps to 'climb' from the driveway to the house!)
**Update: Do you have little kids? We have added a good and sturdy highchair that wheels about. So no need to bring highchairs or booster seats.
***Update: New cushions for sofas! But unfortunately pull-out couch no longer works as a sleeping space. Thanks for not using it while we seek a replacement.
****Update: New gas furnace with a/c installed over the summer. Along with tankless hot water, allowing for “endless” hot water for showers and jacuzzi tub!
**Update: There is a $65 per pet fee per Black Bear Resort policies.

Owner was easy to work with. Needed late checking that was very straightforward. All the comforts of home. Loved the big jacuzzi tub. Highly recommend.

Black Bear Resort is an excellent vacation place for people of all ages! It is close to all major attractions in the area. This resort has games and activities for all ages including a swimming pool. Offered are pickleball, put-put golf, horseshoes, shuffleboard, and corn hole as well as a fire pit and a catch and release fishing pond. Pets are welcome and are provided areas for exercise. It is a wonderful vacation spot!

Cabin was nice, comfy and clean. Everything we needed was there and available. Was disappointed with 1 thing I specifically called early toake sure fire wood was stocked. There was 3 peices. IC called the office to have some delivered, & it was but not until the next day. We had planned to stay in that evening after such a long drive and relax with a fire but did not happen. Had fun next couple days being out in the snow and seeing the shops in the towns. West Virginia a very nice place to visit.

5 friends and I stayed for a weekend of snowboarding. Perfect for a group of close knit friends looking for something affordable. It was clean and overall a great place to stay! Good location too.

We had a great stay. Cozy, convenient, and clean. Only downside was little to know reception but we were busy hiking anyway.

Had fun hiking. Towns Davis and Thomas fun to visit. We where able to bring our dog with us. Just a nice relaxing time.

Great cabin for small families. Property is on a “resort”, but it is very quiet. Plenty to do for kids in the cabin (games, movies) and on the property (pool, playground). 10-15 minute drive to all local attractions. Cabin may not be “state of the art” but it is kept very clean and everything worked great. The check in process was very simple, and Jeff (the property owner) was very responsive to all questions. Would stay here again!

This place was perfect for our family of four (daughters 16 and 22) for a long weekend. Super easy checkin and checkout. The house was nice and toasty and had everything we could need. It snowed off and on all weekend (Perfect!) and we often sat on the couch just staring out at the snow. It was super easy getting in and out of the house because there are only 2 steps to get to the door. During our stay, we went to Blackwater Falls, did some sledding and skiing - all VERY close by. Also enjoyed great food at restaurants in Davis and Thomas, WV. We liked Black Bear resort and hope to have the experience of staying there in the summer too! Staff was super nice, very quiet neighborhood. Loved the snowmen dressed up in different hats/scarves on the property!

Loved the location, easy access to Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley, Davis, Thomas, etc. Cabin was a little small for our family of four, but we weren't there much so it was fine. Pool was not open which was disappointing for the kids.

Great rental. It had everything as described. Very clean.

Perfect location for enjoying the Canaan Valley during peak fall color. Cabin was cozy and immaculate. Would definitely stay here again.

Although a bit dated, the cabin was very clean and comfortable. The only thing I would caution people about is to make sure it is large enough for the number of people you intend on bringing. Although there are 4 bunk beds upstairs there is only 1 bedroom downstairs, and the access to the loft is through a tight, circular style ladder. In addition, there is not much room up there for more than access to the beds, and the downstairs bedroom is tight as well. Lastly, it only has one bathroom. The photos show a commode that is in the downstairs closet, but if you use it you will not be able to close the door. Ask me how I know that! But the cabin is clean and the setting is woodsy, with a nice area for walking, and close to a lot of interesting things to do. Just make sure it has enough space for your group, that would be my only suggestion.

Upon arrival the hot tub was not usable as it wouldn’t fill with enough hot water for my husband to enjoy a bath. Informing the owner immediately resulted in a dismissive response and the problem was not looked into. We chose this unit bc of the tub. I had to work to fix the faulty gasket of the drain causing what hot water there was, to leak all out. Not my job. Even after problem solving why we couldn’t fill the tub, there wasn’t a large enough water tank to fill it.
The unit, specifically the master bedroom was not outfitted as in the photos. There weren’t any reading lights beside the bed.
In comparison to other units of this nature, this unit leaves a lot to be desired. By far the biggest disappointment was the owners dismissive response to my request for help with the tub. Questioning the validity of my complaint and referencing his successful stay with his kids over the winter

Pictures were a little deceiving, expected it to be more isolated, did not realize it was so close to other cabins. No firepit, which would have really been nice. The extra "bathroom"was pretty much useless to anyone except my 8 y/o granddaughter and even she said it was a tight squeeze. It did have A/C. Not really enough relaxed seating for 6 people, although there were fold up chairs available. We enjoyed the stay despite these because we went to enjoy the area, not stay at the cabin.

The property wasn’t that clean and the dryer is broken and the 1/8th bath is unusable due to its size (it’s a small closet). TV in master bed didn’t really work. Dust and cobwebs throughout. Stains on mattress cover.
4.6
This property is as described. I would add that there is plenty of of walking in and around the location and describe how to explore the gravel roads in the area. It was nice to go for a walk without having to drive anywhere. I'm glad we discovered it. You might add that many restaurants in area are working on limited hours. It would be a good idea to bring provisions as local spots are lacking.

Warm and comfy, short drive to xc or Downhill resorts in the valley. Be sure you have good tires in the winter (good tread with 4 wheel drive, and/or snow tires), it’s on a bit of a hill. Even with plowing, if there’s a heavy snow there’s still a lot of snow everywhere - but that’s hopefully why you come in the winter!
4.6
Cabin was surrounded by beautiful nature in a peaceful setting! Good for the soul
4.6
Centrally located to all area attractions like Black Water Falls, Seneca Rocks and Dolly Sods. Resort had Beautiful grounds and well taken care of. If we ever get back that way again will definitely stay there. No reason to look elsewhere .
4.6
We had a wonderful time. The accommodations were just as advised of on the listing. The parks and trails were absolutely fabulous. Would definitely return!
4.6
Would definitely go back. My family enjoyed it. Unfortunately the pool /hot tubs were broke during our stay, but seemed like they were working to get them fixed.
4.6
The property was very nice and we enjoyed our stay. We had great pre-arrival comms and check-in at the resort was a breeze. The folks at the office were very nice. It was very centrally located amongst many of the area's activities. Be advised that the cabin does not have A/c and that is probably a non-issue 95 percent of the year. It got into the nineties during our stay. However, the property was well-shaded and stayed pretty cool. The owner also had five or so box fans and a very effective pedestal fan. It was a non-issue for us, but be aware. As for the area, ours was a mid-week excursion from the DC area, and while we were able to enjoy all of the outdoor activities, dining options are somewhat limited on Tues and Wed. We certainly didn't starve, but the places that were open were busy. We would certainly stay here again if we return to the area.
4.6
Perfect spot for my fiance and our two pups to stay while hiking the beautiful Dolly Sods.
4.6
We enjoyed this location for a kid-free getaway and had a great time. The towns nearby are very small, but there are delightful shops and restaurants with vegatarian choices. If you like to hike or ski there are plenty of places to do this.
4.6
This was the perfect place for myself and my friends to stay for a weekend get away. Very low key and a very stress free experience. Would definitely recommend!
4.6
We knew going in April would mean that we would be able to use some of the property's features like the pool and mini golf. The area itself truly showed how beautiful WV is. The property did it's purpose as far as giving us a place to sleep and eat but we were a little bummed with how outdated a lot of things were. My husband had to play handyman a few times. The toilet would run and he'd have to adjust the flap so it could refill. The pullout couch was broken and he had to find new cable wires to get the big boxed tvs to work. We were only there for a few days so overall it was fine. The best part was going out and doing the cavern tours and checking out Blackwater Falls. Focus on the beauty and not the other stuff!
4.6
This place is perfectly located between Davis and Canaan Valley. It's close to the downhill slopes and White Grass as well as the trails and sledding at Black Water Falls. Kitchen is well equipped and we really enjoyed the fireplace at night. Great for our winter weekend getaway!
4.6
We had a fantastic stay in this adorable house! Our kids loved sleeping in the loft bedroom and we had plenty of firewood to keep a cozy fire going! The kitchen had everything we needed to make our meals and the heat worked really well-especially appreciated the bathroom heater. Only complaints were that cable wasn’t working the whole 3 days we were there (which really wasn’t a big deal for us) and there wasn’t enough hot water to really use the jacuzzi tub. We ran out before we had enough to fill it above the jets. We got over 12 inches of snow while we were there and the resort plows tried to keep up with it. We did end up parking our van at the entrance parking lot so that we could get out since the resort is very hilly and has a big hill that other vehicles were struggling to make it up in the snow. However, we didn’t have 4 wheel drive and if we had, it wouldn’t have been a problem. Check in and out was super smooth and the owner Jeff was very quick to respond. Loved our stay!!
4.6
It is a cute efficient cabin. It has everything you need for a mountain getaway. The first floor bedroom is private and located just off the main area. The upstairs loft has 2 sets of bunkbeds. While other cabins are nearby the cabin felt very private. It snowed while we were there and the resort was a great spot to cross country ski and sled. Loved being able to bring our dog to enjoy the snow with us. Location is convenient to Davis and the surrounding area.
4.6
Nice cabin for a weekend retreat. Enjoyed Whitegrass during the day, and a cozy fire at night! Will be back.
4.6
Everything was nice- if only the owner could summon more snow! ;)
4.6
The cabin was clean and in good shape. Owner was quick to respond to questions. This area is great for mtn biking, skiing, fishing etc
4.6
Except for the broken jacuzzi tub that I really wanted to use and the pool being closed it was fine. I didn't realize the houses were so close together, but there were no issues. It was a good first experience.
