HOW THE RANCH CAME TO BE
The Ranch Is a desert retreat on 60 acres designed and built by
artist/builder Randy Polumbo in Joshua Tree, California. He calls the property "Spikehorn" Ranch, named in honor of his great-great uncle, John “Spikehorn” Meyer, Randy hopes Uncle Spikehorn would be proud of what he has built on his hill in the ruggedly beautiful high desert. Spikehorn was a colorful and brilliant character gifted in showmanship, “bear whispering,” and creating low brow architectural spaces as well as inventions. His sprawling rustic enclave was devoted to bear handling and appreciation, story telling, and other magical and enchanting pursuits. Today's Spikehorn is the perfect family retreat.
The Lodge (Main House) is made of a tumbledown squatters cabin expanded to a meeting hall/lodge/ and dining room for up to 16 people (Great Room & Living Room). This property features exposed framing, maybe six houses worth of vintage steel casement windows, a commercial kitchen, two indoor fireplaces, and three bathrooms.
Honeymoon Hideout (Guest House): This former collapsing garage is now a
lighthearted aerie love nest ideal to hole up with someone special. Enjoy the giant
soaking tub with 360 degree views, the discreet “mile high” privy tucked behind an airplane wing that rolls open, the wood stove, and three old school tire swings (with modern upholstery) Special details include an 8’ chandelier made of vintage bottles on two french bottle racks lit with delicately gelled LEDs by Polumbo Studio and one resident art project. There is extra sleeping on the 2nd FL daybed, and the queen pull out on the first floor.
This is a family retreat, there are no parties, loud music, fraternity type gatherings, business retreats. The county nuisance/noise code forbids loud music at anytime, and there is a 10 PM curfew forbidding any noise (music/party voices) that can be heard outside the house at that time. There is no hiking or climbing anywhere outside the ranch borders, as all the hills and fields are privately owned. We are 4 miles from the entrance of the national park with many choices for hiking and climbing.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most enchanting rental properties I've had the joy of experiencing. The property is clearly cared for with great love and attention. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a desert getaway with friends or family.

We loved our stay. We had two adults and one child sleeping there, with several others in our group staying in nearby properties. We loved the warm, expansive, beautiful, and artistically unique space. The sunrises through the windows are unbelievable. The kitchen has everything you need, and the living areas allow everyone to relax comfortably.

This is an amazing property. The listing does not do it justice. It feels like an artist’s studio in the desert. The entire place is created from reclaimed materials, providing the environment of restoration and renewal that you come to the desert for. Creativity and vision in every breath. Truly magical. It’s also a quick ride to the Park and grocery. It’s immaculately clean and the property manager is incredibly supportive and responsive. We feel very lucky to have spent our holiday here.

Just what we needed! as we were leaving my 4 yr old nephew gave this review when asked about the house -"unsual, cozy, happy, fun" and we all agreed! Great kitchen with more then what you will need to cook a few great meals, close enough to town to run and grab something but feels like you are all out by yourself in nature, roomy yet cozy. We had a great time and hope to go back some time.

Spikehorn Ranch is a personification of a deeply rooted, deeply creative artist. The property lives and breathes, welcoming each guest to explore the wonders of Joshua Tree, the inspirations of Randy Polumbo (a truly unique artist) , and to look inside ourselves and foster our own creative spark.
Our entire stay was full of adventure, discovery, and grounding, and the ranch spectacularly facilitated each step of the journey. Each guest departed fulfilled and seeing our world with a slightly different perspective. I could not give a higher recommendation.
In a practical sense, the property managers were responsive, respectful, and helpful. Sure, we ran into a few issues here and there, but each circumstance was handled easily and quickly as the managers went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was both comfortable and transformational.
There simply is no better property to truly uncover the majesty and mysticism of Joshua Tree. Don't wait. Just hit the "Book It" button. You will not be disappointed.

There is really nothing like Spikehorn Ranch. My friends and I visited for my birthday and it felt like we were staying on an artists compound. There was so much to see and explore on the ranch that we felt like we never had to leave. The fridge broke while we were there but the host was so accommodating and arranged for a new one to be delivered that day. I can’t say enough good things about our experience. I loved everything about this place and will definitely be back!

One of the Coolest Places in Joshua Tree
I booked this property for a weekend with my girlfriend and her friends and it was absolutely amazing. The main house was perfect for having family style dinners and playing board games and there was plenty of room for the friend group. My girlfriend and I stayed in the back house and it was even more magical than the photos. It felt private from the main house and the interior was truly incredible. There are so many places on the property to hang out and relax (patio, jacuzzi, outdoor bed, etc.) and the view of the sunrise is breathtaking. Check-in was very easy and the property is extremely close to markets, shops, and anywhere you'd want to go in Joshua Tree while still feeling secluded. I would highly recommend this place!

Coolest rental ever!
My friends and I stayed here Friday-Sunday to celebrate my 30th birthday. We had an AMAZING time and never needed to leave the house! There were plenty of sleeping arrangements for our group of 10. The kitchen was well stocked. Wifi worked great. We were far enough from the main road/neighbors that we felt secluded, but only a five minute drive from Walmart if we needed anything. 10/10 would recommend and would love to come back and stay again!

Great property, some unique features that folks should be aware of
We had a great time at the property, lovely location and houses. The artists medium uses - at times - some risque materials, that kids may have questions about. We also left an item and were told it would be returned several times - it wasn't. Nevertheless, the property and stay were fantastic, I would absolutely stay again.

Desert Wonderland
I haven’t seen some of my girl friends in a while and we decided to get together in Joshua Tree. I found this property and thought the pictures were great but they didn’t even come close to doing the property justice. We adored the property! It was a great space for us all to be together and be in nature. We cooked together, played games, walked around the property, and watched the stars. We had an amazing time and want to return!! There were so many little details that made the property unique and throughout our stay we saw more and more. The communication with the host/hosts was fantastic and they were very responsive when we had a question during our stay!!

Stunning Oasis in Joshua Tree
This property is very special. It's kooky, cozy, and just what we needed. You feel quite secluded even though you're minutes from Joshua Tree National Park. It's a quick drive to shops and restaurants but to be honest the kitchen is so well stocked that you could cook all your meals at home. Every sunrise and sunset is a masterpiece, and there are so many little nooks and spaces to explore. We hope to be back soon.

JT perfection
Photos don’t do it justice. This place was beyond perfect for our group of 10. Stunning sunsets and sunrises. Excellent design and aesthetic. The giant bed was amazing for stargazing and sunset watching. Hosts extremely responsive and sweet. Felt secluded, but was just a few minutes to the main road. We’ll never forget this vacation!

Deeply peaceful, spacious, comfortable space. See my "post-apocalyptic sublime" review below for more details. I wish the trailers were still available.

Amazing!
This place was perfect for our small group getaway. The weather was pretty bad all weekend so the two houses gave us plenty of space to enjoy our time inside. The kitchen is amazing and allowed us to cook all of our meals there, we never had to leave the whole weekend! Can’t wait to come back

Exceptional weekend, star gazing and perfect weather.
The houses, and overall property were absolutely splendid. We enjoyed ourselves immensely. We had a group of 9, split between the front and back house. There wasn't enough time to explore the whole place, we will be back. Our new favorite spot in J Tree.

Unwindage
We came. We saw the sunrise and set. We cooked together and ate together. Remote schooled. Watched the jackrabbits. Saw a woodpecker. Stargazed. Took high value baths. Easy time all around. We look forward to coming back.

Very cool Joshua Tree property
We were blown away! This property is artwork that makes you wonder. All the many beds were super comfortable. We slept very well! We also loved the disco record. It was the soundtrack of the weekend. The hosts were very responsive to any questions we had prior and during our stay.

Lovely desert getaway
The place is super unique and quirky while also being incredibly comfortable. The kitchen and grill area are amazing, as is the multitude of areas to hangout in the main house. The desert bed at night to stargaze was a real highlight. Overall we had a wonderful time!

This place is a dream...
This property was the perfect desert getaway for my group. I knew the property was going to be cool, but the photos don't do it justice. The living spaces appear larger in person, and both buildings were beautifully designed and felt like a dream. I stayed in August which is considered the very hot season, but the AC kept us plenty cool during the day.
I had some concerns the week of my visit due to the Apple Valley fires causing smoke in the area. However, the hosts were super responsive and sent me daily updates and photos of the sky which put me at ease until the day I arrived. Obviously they can't control the weather, but I appreciated the personal touch, and luckily the smoke cleared out during our stay.
My time here couldn't have been better, and it exceeded my expectations. Will definitely try to book again in the future!

Post-apocalyptic sublime
I was searching for a beautiful, peaceful, relaxing retreat and discussion space away from LA for me and my awesome coworkers, and am beyond delighted I came across Spikehorn. The joshua-tree landscape was stunning. The radical creativity, mindful post-industrial repurposing, and surpassing engineering genius inhering in every detail of the built/assembled environment of this compound was sublime. I was worried that some might prefer a blander, more predictable hotel experience but *everyone* fell under its spell and loved it. Plenty of space to meet and discuss organizational priorities around the fireplace, cook and eat, listen to music, sleep deeply, contemplate the stars, and watch the sun rise on the desert. If you are maxing out the sleeping spaces, make sure the heaters are working in every trailer as a we discovered a couple were not when we were there. Tim was very responsive and helpful. Stay here: you will be happy and depart with your spirit renewed.

The perfect Joshua Tree getaway
With so few photos of this listing, I was a bit weary as to what this property would entail. After a short, questionable drive up a dirt road and getting lost a few times, we arrive at this desert oasis and could not have been more surprised and delighted with what we discovered. The compound is perfect for a large group with plenty of room to spread out. It has interesting art, sculptures, and furniture throughout the property creating a relaxing and stimulating environment around. Could not have imagined a better place to host in Joshua Tree.

Amazing desert retreat
We had a great time with 16 people. The caretaker was responsive but not intrusive. Could not have asked for anything better!

First time at the Joshua Tree and couldn't think of a better place to stay.
Property caretaker was tentative and helpful. Just make sure you are clear with him what needs fixing. The house has everything you need and private enough for your large group. Amazing desert views of the stars and sunsets. The amount of detail will make you really appreciate the artistic approach of the property. Amenities are great, clean, and well maintained. This property is in Yucca Valley which is still about 20 minutes from the State Park. However there is a giant walmart near by for anything you need. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

A Wonderful, Unique, and Creative Space
The Spikehorn property is beautiful. Each building has fascinating and unique decorations. This is a wonderful location if you have a decent sized group. The commercial kitchen makes preparing food a breeze. The various sculptural lighting is amazing. There's an oversized weather potected bed outside perfect for watching the stars! So many details feel so well thought out. We're truly grateful for the experience!

Waking up here was a dream
I had 2 nights of pure coziness in this incredibly warm and welcoming abode. I recommend for romance, family and friend bonding time. The property surprises you upon entering with old stoves and such re purposed as planters. The kitchen is perfect for fun feasts with a big grill that is perfect for preparing meals for gatherings. But there is so much more to this place than what can be said. It's a beautiful place. My favorite part was waking up and seeing the inspiring view. The light is perfect here so I didn't mind waking up with the sun. I highly recommend staying here for at least one night and taking full advantage of all that Spikehorn has to offer.

a beautiful hideout
Staying here for a week was the most relaxing and inspiring experience I have ever had. Everything, including inside the buildings, feels spacious and airy because of the wide open spaces and large windows. Right outside these windows is a wonderful view of mountains and a drop dead gorgeous sunset every day. At night the stars are unbelievably bright. The area feels very tucked away and cozy, but it is a convenient distance from grocery stores and the like, including the national park and Noah Purifoy's outdoor museum. The privacy and fresh air were perfect for relaxing/ letting loose and enjoying the surroundings as well as the other people there. The kitchen is spacious and ideal for making large meals for family and friends. In addition, the interior decorations are beautiful and unique. There is absolutely no space that has the same atmosphere as Spikehorn.

An inspiring and magical experience
Just like its owner/creator, Spikehorn is unique, creative, memorable and inspiring. We recently hosted our wedding celebration at the Spikehorn compound and it was an incredible experience that we and our guests will be talking about for years to come.
From the art installations and creative integrations throughout the homes, to the hand crafted Goddess fire pit sculpture, modern tire swings, hilltop soaking tub, monumental outdoor bed for stargazing, and of course the breathtaking surrounding desert landscape, Spikehorn never fails to impress. We truly never wanted to leave. Spikehorn is wonderful for couples (renting one house), larger groups/families renting the entire compound, and, of course, weddings!
To get a better idea of the environment and property description, check out the Vogue article on our wedding by googling "Spikehorn Vogue".
