About this villa rental
Monte Bay is in a sweet exclusive quiet location, one with a picturesque waterfront setting and excellent privacy. You will love the sound of the surf being at the waters edge. To be fair to all sizes of parties, we offer discounted rates for small groups by adding an additional guest fee to larger groups.
Monte Bay is tucked into a tropical lush enclave with the main house built just above the turquoise and azure waters of Monte Bay, and the guesthouse built just behind the main house. Both houses face south–southwest and are a sun lover’s dream with soft breezes and warm sunshine all day long. Monte is hidden from view from the private road that accesses Klein Bay, and there are no traffic noises or intrusions. A short walk takes you to a pebble beach for swimming and snorkeling and a 10-minute swim/snorkel brings you to the white sand beach at Ditliff Point. Both Ditliff Beach and Klein Bay are protected by Ditliff Peninsula, so the calm, crystal clear waters are sheltered from heavy surf and strong winds which makes this inviting for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. Monte Bay is a 7 to 10 minute drive from the groceries, restaurants and shops of Cruz Bay.
Monte Bay is a handsome 2-½ level, custom home that was designed to be a luxurious indoor/outdoor tropical villa. To enter Monte you descend through a hillside garden and enter the great room with the kitchen on your right, the formal dining room on your left and the interior living room just 3 steps below the kitchen/dining areas. The two upper-level guest bedrooms and a convenient half bath are also located just below the kitchen. The spacious gallery (covered porch) contains a second living and dining area which is cooled by tropical breezes. The gallery is a half level below the interior living/dining area. From the gallery, tiled stairs on the left lead to the lower level with the master bedroom and the lower left guest bedroom, plus a 30' ceramic tiled pool surrounded by a tiled deck. The right set of stairs from the gallery leads to the lower right guest bedroom and a secluded hot tub nestled into a romantic setting.
The gallery, pool and sun deck are the outdoor part of the home. The gallery serves as a lovely outdoor living and dining room. When you relax here the sound of gentle surf and views of turquoise seas surround you. The indoor parts of the house are the kitchen and all the bedrooms (2 inside access, 3 outside access) plus the enclosed living and dining areas. Banana, papaya, palm and other abundant vegetation surrounds the house and create a superb clothing optional privacy.
The bedrooms are located on two levels. On the upper level two guest bedrooms (queen beds) are located on opposite sides of the great room to insure maximum privacy. Both of these bedrooms have air conditioning, 4-poster mahogany beds, tiled floors, vaulted ceilings and screened sliding glass doors that open to balconies with picturesque views. They also have tiled baths and private outdoor stone garden showers that are surrounded by luxuriant tropical foliage. The spacious, air-conditioned master bedroom (king bed) is located on the lower level. It features lovely views of the Caribbean through 20' screened sliding glass doors, and also includes a large bath/dressing room that is entered through beautiful stone arches. The fourth a/c bedroom (king bed) and bath adjoins the pool deck on the lower left, while the fifth bedroom (twin beds) is on the lower right side of the villa near the hot tub.
The kitchen has been completely remodeled and looks gorgeous with cherry cabinets accented by granite countertops and top name stainless steel appliances. It includes a 5-burner gas cook top stove, standard and convection ovens, a refrigerator/freezer, a microwave oven and dishwasher and a granite countertop bar with bar stools. The kitchen is amply supplied with cooking supplies, utensils and dinnerware. A laundry room with a washer and dryer is located off the great room and a separate stone patio off the deck contains a BBQ grill.
The interior dining room is centered around an expanded table that seats 12, while casual lunches and dinner may be served on the pool deck or in the gallery.
The stylish, interior great room is furnished with top of the line furniture, and includes a cable TV/DVD and a stereo with CD and cassette. The gallery is the outstanding design feature of Monte Bay. It is surrounded on 3 sides by Mediterranean style, 12 foot, open arched windows that effectively capture all the beauty of the Caribbean. The gallery is tastefully furnished in custom made cushioned furniture and is an absolutely splendid place to read, relax, paint or unwind.
The Guest House at Monte Bay is an attractive villa built of stone and concrete and is located above and behind the main house. Like the main house, the Guesthouse enjoys a very private, quiet and romantic location. A spiral staircase leads from the ground level to the upper level, which contains the kitchen/living and dining areas, as well as the master bedroom and master bath. An exterior covered deck runs the full length of the upper level of the Guesthouse, and from the deck there are scenic views of Rendezvous Bay and the Caribbean.
The Guesthouse has stonewalls, beamed cathedral ceilings, tiled floors throughout, and tropical furnishings and artwork which creates a classy, comfy and inviting living environment. The a/c master bedroom (queen bed) has stonewalls and a delightfully romantic essence with screened sliding doors that open to water views. The kitchen is modern and completely equipped, with tiled countertops, a 4-burner gas stove and oven, dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster oven and a small table for two. Sliding doors open from the living area to the decks and views of the water.
A tile and stone master bath with lots of closet space and a stone shower is off the master bedroom. A second bedroom (queen) and private bath is located on the ground level.
You also have private access to the path that leads to snorkeling and swimming, in the beautiful waters just below the house. Be cautious of rocky entrance to the water and possible sea urchins.

We were completely shocked to walk into the property and it was even more beautiful than the photos posted. Host was beyond helpful!

Monte Bay is a beautiful villa sitting along the Caribbean turquoise waters. Very well appointed and a fabulous pool and patio. We had 11 adults and were very comfortable in the main villa and guest house. Property owner and property manager were both outstanding and very welcoming! Highly recommend this villa if traveling to St. John!

This is a spacious house, which accommodated the 13 members of our extended family nicely. It is in a beautiful setting with a magnificent view of Rendezvous Bay. We all greatly enjoyed the large pool in the afternoon after mornings at the beach and lunch out. We prepared our breakfasts and dinners in the well appointed kitchen. It was very pleasant to have our meals and spend our evenings outside in the gallery. Luciah was very responsive and helpful. We had a wonderful week at Monte Bay Villa.

Monte Bay Villa is the perfect house for a great experience in St. John. We were 7 couples who were impressed with the house, it’s layout, the amenities, it’s location, and the views. We will definitely be back to stay in this fine property.

Luciah, the property manager made this trip a success! The home is beautiful but she created the experience and made sure we had all connections and contacts on the island ahead of our trip. Thank you again.

This property overlooks Monte Bay which is absolutely stunning. The water is as beautiful as I have ever seen. The beds are extremely comfortable and the pool by the gorgeous view was a major plus. It is a great, quiet and private house right in the middle of mountains and ocean - but just 8 mins away from the grocery store ! Luciah was absolutely amazing. I would rent the house again just because of her. She answered all my questions I had prior to renting the house and even met us at the ferry dock to show us the way home. Anytime we needed anything she was very responsive and more than willing to help however she could. Two things to address: The living area/kitchen does not have AC - only the bedrooms but it was fine for us because it was not summer hot. Also the showers for the two queen bedrooms off the living area are outside surrounded by a high rocky wall but it made for even more of an experience ! They were great ! I would definitely rent the house again if I came back. Would just appreciate AC in the living area and this house would be absolutely perfect ! Thank you so much !

The check-in process was quick and easy. There was plenty of space for the 5 couples that went. The views and swimming pool were amazing. We got groceries before we went to the house and we took a taxi everywhere (same driver all week). It was kind of expensive to take a taxi everywhere but worth it, in my opinion, when it comes to finding parking and having a designated driver when you’ve sat on the beach and had one too many lol..my only complaint is the mosquitoes..which isn’t a deal breaker..just take some bug spray or buy some there and you’ll be just fine. The overall experience staying here was definitely a 10/10 though! Can’t wait to go back!

Great property in St. John!
The property was beautiful! It was very spacious- we had 12 and everyone had their own spot. The pool was great. We rented cars and weren’t prepared for how difficult the driving was (insane hills, twists and turns). They have taxis which we would probably do if we came back. We really enjoyed ourselves and would return.

Lovely view with terrible mosquitos - will pick another house next time
This house has amazing views but we could not believe how incredibly horrendous the mosquitos were. The reviews all mention the bugs but I can not stress enough how many bug bites we all got and how unbelievable it is.
We were a group of 9 split across two families. 4 adults and 5 kids. We were charged to use the guest house and in all honesty, we didn't need it. We all could've slept comfortably in the main house and didn't need to pay the extra for the guest house. We weren't given a choice. One person slept in the guest house simply because we were paying for the space but it went completely unused otherwise.
Key points to consider:
1) While there are two king beds on the property, there is truly only one "master suite". So if you are a group of two families like we were, just realize this going into it. The second room with the king bed is much smaller and very different than the true "master bedroom".
2) The master bathroom is very open to the bedroom. The couple that stayed in there from our group said it was especially hard at night if one person got up for water or to use the restroom that the other person was woken up nearly all the time. Also zero privacy (i.e., no door for the toilet).
3) ALL cushions in the covered porch area and main living area are in need of replacement. Some of the pots / pans need to be replaced or thrown out. Notable scrap / junk laying around the property that needs to be removed. I realize that finding a place to dispose of such items is difficult on the island but renters who are paying large amounts of money for a weekly rental don't enjoy seeing large piles of junk and debris around the property.
4) The mattress in the bedroom on the main level next to the powder rooms needs to be replaced. It is peeling apart in places.
5) Limited hot water. It's not easy or convenient to stagger showers when everyone wants to stay outside as long as possible and then shower as close to dinner as possible. Additionally, the two outdoor showers get quite breezy and chilly at times when the water is luke-warm and the breeze is blowing. *NOTE: the two bedrooms on the main level of the main house ONLY have outdoor showers*
6) Exterior door entry ONLY to 3 of the 5 bedrooms in the main house - potential concern for families with small kids.
We had a wonderful time in St. John but for the price and cons listed, we'll pick another house next time.

Enjoyable Stay
Ms Luciah was very welcoming and accommodating. The property was beautiful, the ocean view was amazing. We encountered a few issues and they were addressed right away. My family were very happy with the accommodations, we were Celebrating several birthdays...the overall experience was great!

If you are looking for a nice quiet place to relax and enjoy the view, this is your place!
This place was amazing. The only uncomfortable part, is there is no A.C. is the living room area and it's hard to enjoy and mingle with other guest because of the heat. You can leave the doors open, but the mosquitoes and some other flying bugs were horrible. Everything else was simply amazing! The property manager was very easy to contact and accessible.

Wonderful
We had a wonderful stay at this Villa.
Luciah was very responsive.
We had a large group so cooked most of our meals at the villa and snorkeled right in front of the villa! Just wear water shoes to avoid the urchins upon entry. I swam there everyday. We saw lots of fish and a spotted eagle ray by the rocks.
We loved the outdoor showers, chirping birds, flowers, and secluded feel.
Bring bug spray and lots of sunblock!

It is a beautiful villa with a cottage that will accommodate 11 guests comfortably. The villa manager, Luciah and her husband Jake, were extremely helpful answering questions and responding to any issues we had. Outstanding hosts!!! The villa beautiful, the pictures give you a taste of what to expect. The hot tub is no longer available due to it not functioning, but the pool and view makes up for not having one.

Great Birthday Celebrations
There was a total of 12 of us staying at the villa and 5 of us had birthday in January. What a great way to celebrate! The house was great. Luciah helped with pre-planning and groceries. And the view was absolutely beautiful. Just bring you bug spray. The mosquitos were everywhere.

For the Negatives: We arrived 2 hours after the approved check in time and upon arrival the the pool was still in the process of being cleaned (after 12 hours of travel our kids wanted to jump in the pool and not wait an additional 30 minutes to use it). Later that night we wanted to use the jacuzzi and found that it was not in working order and would not be fixed during our entire 7 night stay! The rear patio sliding screen doors we not in working order making it difficult to open, the house had zero hand soap in any of the bathrooms, one bathroom was out of toilet paper, one toilet did not function, lights in one bathroom did not function and the overall home was not very clean. Also, the main living area was not set up with AC (maybe we missed this in the write up but the room was extremely warm). For the Positives: The home is large and the setting/views were amazing! Over all for the price we expected much better.

Paradise on earth
We, thoroughly, enjoyed our time at this beautiful property. Lucia, the property manager, was extremely helpful, responsive and so pleasant throughout our trip. The view from the house is stunning! We were a group of 10. The space was more than accommodating. There is a beach only 5 minutes away (walking distance). It’s rocky but as long as you have water shoes on, you’ll enjoy it. The kids loved hanging out at the pool every night. The veranda is perfect for hanging out with friends and family. This was truly an amazing vacation!

Paradise before COVID-19
Our stay at Monte Bay was amazing. I have stayed at a number of VRBOs over the years, and there have been times where the pictures of the property were better than the property. In the case of Monte Bay, the VRBO pictures do not do justice to the house or views. It took nearly 20 hours of travel from our home to Monte Bay. I walked through the front door of the property and looked right through the house to the most spectacular view of the ocean. It made real life melt away.
The house is perfect for a large group. We had 6 adults, 8 teenagers and one 5 year-old. The 7 bedrooms, 7.5 baths accommodated our large group perfectly. Everyone had their own space. The teenagers loved the guest-house and spent late evenings up talking and being teens, while us "old folks" were able to retire at a reasonable hour and not even hear them.
We spent a number of our days not even leaving the property. Sitting around the pool and enjoying the view were some of the very best days.
The kitchen has all the necessities for cooking. For two of our nights we had Mat, owner and head chef of St. John Catering, come to the house and cook for us. The food was local, fresh and delicious. The teens ate at the huge table in the main house, and enjoyed their meal and their space. The adults sat out on the patio enjoying the amazing food with the most spectacular view. These meal times were one of the highlights of our trip.
Luciah, the property manager, was amazing. She had everything set-up at the house when we arrived. When I walked in the door and she handed me a cold bottle of beer I almost cried. One service that was offered was to have groceries at the house when you arrive. This was life-safer when you have traveled 20 hours and the last thing you want to do when you arrive is worry about food. Absolutely critical with 8 HANGRY teenagers.
Luciah had lots of great suggestions about services and places to visit on St. John. One of the highlights of the trip was using Chico for taxi services. Luciah was always just a phone call or text away when we needed something or to answer questions.
The owners keep a beautiful property and are very kind. We happened to be in St. John as the COVID-19 situation was really starting to blow-up in the states. They offered to let us extend our stay, and were willing to work with us on price. Unfortunately we had to leave this island paradise and return to reality. I plan on going back!

Wonderful home, great for a large family!
We had a great time staying at Monte Bay. The view from the house is spectacular and the pool is wonderful. Each room in the main house has its own bathroom which was nice. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need to cook and the house had beach towels and beach chairs. I would recommend a 4 wheel drive car for the house as some of the hills and turns can be tough. Make sure to bring or buy bug spray with deet, the mosquitos were a bit of a pain a few days. We would definitely go back and enjoyed our time at the villa!

Hands down, best place!
We had a large reunion group of 12 adults stay for a friend's destination wedding and stayed here for 4 nights. This was an absolutely perfect place for a large gathering. The listing is accurate (except that the twin bedroom DOES have a bathroom, so a bonus) and the kitchen is incredibly well stocked (lots of cupboards and drawers, so if it doesn't jump out at you, just keep searching). This is island living, so there is a natural mustiness, but to be expected if you've ever traveled outside of the US. Having a washer/dryer was fantastic to keep the beach towels (provided) dry during our stay. Beach chairs a bonus!!
The views are incredibly breathtaking and so enjoyable to just relax at the dining table outside to eat, drink and socialize.
Some helpful things before you travel to the Island:
1. Get a Jeep, period. We had one of our group in a small Nissan and they had to turn off AC to get up the STEEP hills on the island. Driving is on the left hand side and roads are steep with sharp turns. If you are arriving after dark, drive slowly!
2. We saw very limited taxi service out this way and also a bit hard to coordinate, so see #1
3. Starfish Market is the BEST place to get food from a selection standpoint. They had great fresh fish and meats and a great assortment. Be prepared for island prices, but cooking at home still saves $$$ over pricey downtown restaurants that get crowded. The dolphin Market (chocolate hole) is a smaller market, but closer to the house if you need to run and grab a quick item or two.
4. Plenty of trash bags were provided and you have to drive the trash out to one of two dumpsters on the way to town.
5. Our group rented cars on both STT and St John side, be prepared before you go with your travel itineraries, ferry schedules, car barge schedules and don't buy a roundtrip car barge if you aren't taking that company back (they all run at different times). Print the ferry schedules, bring with you. Pay attention to closing times.
6. Beach parking is pretty crowded. We wanted to go to Maho bay but couldn't get parking anywhere. Get there early!
7. Low Key water sports was great for a combined diving/snorkeling trip for our group. BUT if you are only snorkeling, I would recommend saving your $$$ and just going out in the bay in front of the house. There are stairs to access and a bit of a rough entry, but great snorkeling right there. You can also walk up the road to turtle point.
8. Verizon and ATT cell service spotty!!

Amazing time at Monte Bay!
We had a great experience from the moment we booked the villa. Luciah was super responsive and very helpful. She met us at the dock and got us settled. The villa was perfect for our large family. Many rooms had spectacular views and the shared space was comfortable. The pool was amazing and we were in it several times a day and at night for star gazing. The kitchen had everything we needed and you can’t beat dinners on the patio. We had an amazing time and will be going back.

The perfect place for our trip
We spent 8 nights at Monte Bay and loved every minute of it. We had 4 single adults and 2 couples on our trip. The pool, grill, outside patio, and hot tub are great amenities to this house. The upstairs veranda was breathtaking. All us started our mornings by sitting on the veranda enjoying our coffee while listening to the waves crashing on the shore. We also ate most of our meals on the veranda. The bedrooms were nice size with spectacular views of the ocean. The master bedroom is quite large with ocean views from every corner of the room.
The outside showers were a big hit with our group. We had full moons during our trip. Therefore, the opportunity to shower under a full moon with ocean waves crashing is amazing.
Luciah was a great host. She took our first group of arrivals up to the house, and explained everything to them. She was extremely helpful through out the week when we reached out to her.
Everyone in our group loved the place, and agreed they would gladly stay there again when we go back.
