The Bird House
Contemporary self contained, one bedroom container home with closed in deck set amongst the bushland and wildlife of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.
Ideal short-stay retreat for couples, writers hideaway or for bird watchers.

Getting there
Travel by vehicle barge or ferry from Redland Bay to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands. Complimentary bus to RSL or Bowling Club on island. Amenities on island include Supa IGA, bakery, cafes/restaurants, fuel, fishing gear etc. There is a ride share service called ‘Island Ride’.

It was lovely to stay in a place where the only sounds I heard were birds and wind. The Bird House had everything I needed and was easy to find. I enjoyed the area too.

The Birdhouse was just as it was named, the large flyscreened verandah meant we could spend most of our stay where we were at the accomodation out in the elements, taking in the huge variety of animals that came past. Peaceful and quiet, and in a good location away from the main noise of the island, close to lots of nature walks and a quick swim.

We enjoyed our stay at the 'Bird House'/Island tank Avairy for a few days of relaxation. Compact, but everything there. We did experience the full range of Queensland weather - sun, rain, heat, cold over the week but were comfortable. Only drawback was the biting insects.

We were super impressed with this accommodation….it was amazing. We thought it would feel small but it felt anything but. Really well designed and they have thought of everything you will and could possibly need. The enclosed deck give the property another dimension and it was lovely to sit outside and not be bugged by insects. Well done on the fit out and the incidentals, we did not want for anything during our stay.

The bird house was a pleasure to wake up too each morning. The sun streaming through the windows early in the morning was magical. As was sitting on the deck watching the sunset, with a glass of wine.

We came to the Bird House to relax after a very crazy work season; we did as little as possible, and it was a great place to do that. The place is very well put together and the screened porch is amazing, and popular with the local birds. We've decided the curlew's name is Kevin.

Amazing container home has all mod cons in new condition . I brought my car over on the ferry so no problem driving around too far to walk to shops . U need to book vehicle ferry app 2 weeks in advance all went well I would come again

What happened to the shipping container is magic, Shelley has a one bedroom home, there is no internet and TV is so-so, but who needs those things when birds come knocking.(no that that sort ) We enjoyed just driving around the island. A great place to enjoy a few quite days. You realy need your car.

Living for a month in this beautiful ‘tiny house’ in the bush was for me the perfect escape from all the stresses of day-to-day city life. The birds that visited every day allowed me to briefly share their intriguing lives. I also learnt never to venture outside this cosy cocoon without a good dose of insect repellent. Wearing long-sleeved and long-legged clothing when out walking helps too. Because Russell is quite a large island, and The Bird House is located down the southern end, it’s advisable to bring your own car. Having to rely on the old, worn-out mini-buses that pass for a taxi service was not the highlight of my stay.

Feeding birds, Green environment, bush walking in the morning, fresh air, just reminded back in my home country in Africa Malawi. Well cleaned , good staff, No Wi-Fi, Tv doesn't show Channel 9.

Had a fantastic stay. This property is ideal for a couple wanting peace and tranquillity in a beautiful spot. Watch the birds feeding from out the front while sitting in the screened enclosure. Great for a short stay. Would recommend.

This little house is very special. It is wonderfully appointed with a decent kitchen, full sized fridge and reasonable numbers of pot, pans and utensils. The front deck is amazing. The midgees can be somewhat annoying however so we recommend the use of the zapper in the laundry, works a treat. The local wildlife are abundant, the curlews an interesting addition. You definitely need a car as it is about 6 km from the township and services. Id recommend cooking for yourself as meal options are limited to 'take away'. Paradise.

Great little place, plenty of appointments for a short stay. Feeding the birds was a great point of difference for nature lovers. Cerlews, Kookas, Butcher birds, Maggie's, Galah's, Cockatoo's and Rainbow Lorikeets.

Everything one could need was provided. Excellent! We would have preferred curtains, because at night you feel like living in an aquarium. The midgees were horrible.

Little beauty that has it all! You think if anything and it’s there! Very thoughtfully stocked and well presented. Owner is prompt and professional. The only thing that would bother is these tiny midges. Didn’t even know how irritable they are until I read this ‘ Midge bites can be reasonably persistent, lasting up to two weeks as red lumps or sores (possibly linked together by a red rash or welt). They last a lot longer than mosquito bites because the bite causes more damage – mosquitos inject a syringe-like tube into your skin to drain out blood while biting midges actually cut your skin open with special cutters around their mouths. The cut is tiny, but it can still hurt a lot’. So do yourself a favour and wear full sleeve shirts and pants!

So peaceful and lovely. Lots of birds to feed and watch. Tiny house was just perfect with everything you could possibly want. Only thing I’d add is that curtains or blinds for privacy would be a great addition. Highly recommend. Will visit again :)
