About this house rental
Enjoy our great family vacation home - The ''PoorHouse''. For over 50 years the Poor family has enjoyed regular visits and family reunions on Nantucket. We invite you to share our home. Message us for our special insider hints on how best to enjoy Nantucket, just as if you, too, have been coming for decades.
Our historic house is in a very quiet neighborhood in town, but just a short 10 minute walk to the bottom of Main Street and all the activity ''downtown'', and an easy bike ride to beaches. There are four bedrooms and three baths, for up to eight guests. There is a large fenced-in yard - great for children and well behaved dogs, and conservation land right across the street. You'll find everything you need for a wonderful visit - linens, beach towels, washer/dryer, gas grill, cable, and super high speed wi-fi. The recently renovated kitchen is large and comfortably well-appointed. The house is heated for your comfort in chilly weather, with fireplaces downstairs for a warm welcome on a cold day, and equipped with window air conditioning in the summer season.
The PoorHouse is perfect for a long weekend or week or more to create perfect memories. If you are visiting Nantucket for one of the many festivals that take place during the shoulder season (including the Daffodil Weekend, the Film, Dance, Book, Wine and Cranberry Festivals, and Christmas Stroll), or are part of a wedding celebration or reunion, our house is a perfect base of operations. You will have easy access to all the activity, and yet be able to retreat to your quiet home for a much needed break.
With advanced notice, we can help you with special arrangements for airport and boat pick-up, golfing, sailing, tennis, a clambake, a fishing trip, catering for a special event...or almost anything you could imagine doing on Nantucket.
Note: Initial 25% deposit is non-refundable. 75% balance is due 30 days before first day of rental period. VRBO will hold $750 security deposit in escrow account. Security deposit is returned to renter within 14 days after lease period ends, provided house is in same condition existing upon renter's arrival.

My family and I stayed here for five wonderful nights. It is an amazing location. Walkable to town, yet far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet. The house is absolutely beautiful. Everything is so nicely updated. The owners were there for anything I needed at any time. We could not have asked for a better place to stay during our vacation. The house is so clean and so well equipped. If we are ever in Nantucket again, we will definitely be looking to return to the same place!

We absolutely loved our stay at the Poor House and already can’t wait to go back next year. The house is located a quick 15 minute walk from town, with access to many biking / running trails. Our favorite part of the house was the giant backyard. We also appreciated how well stocked it was (great cooking utensils, linens, beach gear, etc) - it’s clear that the Poors take real pride in the house! It feels more like a home than a vacation rental. Highly recommend!

We have been coming to Nantucket for over 20 years and this is one of the nicest homes we have rented.
The location is walking distance to town and close to the bike paths leading to Cisco and Surfside. The enclosed yard is huge and the house is historic and beautiful, extremely well stocked and clean. Wish we could have stayed longer. Mary & George

The Poore house was perfect for our friends getaway to Nantucket. The host was great and the home was very clean. The history was also very cool. We loved being able to walk and bike to town from this location. We will definitely want to come back!

Beautiful historic home and property! David & Pat could not have been nicer! How wonderful for us to arrive at the house to find a lovely 'Welcome Bag' with all kinds of yummy treats too. Thank you again :)

Easy "Stroll" Into Town
My family stayed and at the "PoorHouse" over Christmas Stroll weekend. First of all, the communication and organization of Pat and David, was by far, the best of any owner we have worked with in the past. Having owners who care about their guests makes a trip so much less stressful. Secondly, the home oozes with history yet has today's amenities (best of both worlds). It is a very short/pleasurable walk to town, has a big yard, is on a quiet street and is also close to out-of-town amenities/attractions. My family enjoyed our stay and would recommend the "PoorHouse" to anyone. Thanks Pat & David!

Perfect house and location
The house was in a perfect location for walking to town, or getting anywhere on island, was immaculately clean, and had every amenity we could have needed. We felt comfortable and at home. David and Pat were wonderful hosts. Quick to respond, helpful and accommodating. We can’t wait to come back and stay again.

Charming Nantucket home
We spent our anniversary weekend with two other couples also celebrating anniversaries at the Poor House. We were greeted with a lovely tote bag filled with maps of the island and points of interest, a bottle of wine, granola, chocolate covered cranberries, tea, and coffee! Such a thoughtful touch! The home is charming and old Nantucket right on the outskirts of the downtown area. We had everything we needed! Our only issue was the lock box to get into the house. That was a bit challenging to open, but once we got it opened we were all set! We all agreed that we would love to spend more time at the Poor house in the future!

Well-equipped home in convenient location
The Poor House is in a great location on a quiet street that is a short walk to the downtown shops and restaurants and an even shorter ride to the bike path that can take you to beaches. The bedrooms are all comfortable, and the kitchen well-equipped. There is a wonderful large kitchen table and lots of outdoor space in the backyard. The owners are super responsive.

Unbelievably great
We throughly enjoyed our stay. Mean it. David was responsive, professional, accommodating and accurate in all ways. The house was fully appointed and in a perfect in town location. Fabulous country kitchen and excellent washer and dryer facilities. Wonderful back deck and outside yard. Strong WiFi connections. This was one of the rare experiences that exceeds expectations at all levels. If you like Nantucket, you can’t do better.

Christmas in Nantucket
We had a wonderful stay in the Poor House, where everything had been prepared for our comfort and convenience. We had been worried it might be chilly, but no! It was warm and very cozy, everything we needed was to hand. We know Nantucket well, so perhaps that helped to navigate, but the weather was gorgeous, the location just right for getting around, walking downtown, even driving to squam and walking on the beach. It was great!

Christmas Stroll in Nantucket
The property was just what we needed and as advertised. Great for a large group, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. We loved the large dining table and enjoyed our stay. Just a note, this home, like many on the island, was built several years ago, so that means thin walls, steep staircases, random steps and ramps in the flooring. So if you have any little ones joining you, just something to be aware of. We enjoyed the Christmas Stroll festivities, and would love to come back in the summer.

Best friends celebrating our birthday
Five best friends celebrating our “ big” birthdays stayed at the wonderful property. The house is warm and welcoming as are hosts that allowed us to stay. The location was perfect. Near town and without the hustle and bustle! Loved the PoorHouse! Thank you, David and Pat!

Fantastic Stay at Poor House!
Don’t hesitate- book this property! My family and I had a wonderful time here. Our Frenchie loved it too!
The house is exactly as advertised. The yard is great and there is plenty of seating for eating or just relaxing outdoors! The inside of the house is very charming, and also with plenty of seating for the entire family. All the cookware you need is provided! (Waffle iron was a big hit) We found this to be an ideal location, close to town, but just outside the hustle and bustle.
Most importantly, the owners are extremely responsive and very nice to deal with. Pat and David were prompt in answering any questions, and even left us the sweetest gift bag upon our arrival!
I found the informational binder extremely helpful with everything we needed to know about the house (and where to find things) along with great info about things to do/places to go on the island (because of this we knew we could get bikes delivered right to the house- thank you!)
Fantastic stay- we would definitely love to rent this property again.

A Nantucket Gem
This is a beautiful house very well located for an in-town location while still close to beaches and many island treasures. The house is a wonderful blend of rich Nantucket history and all the modern conveniences needed for a family on vacation. The owner is terrific and helpful. We would be delighted to return to the Poor house. Thanks so much for sharing it with us!

Fantastic Family Home on Nantucket!
We loved our stay at 17 Mill Street. The house has the perfect blend of historic charm and modern amenities. Our family of six had plenty of room, and the location is great. Bike paths to the beaches are just blocks away and downtown is a short walk down cobblestone streets. Plus there is a large backyard and a field across the street for kids to play. We would highly recommend this property for your visit to Nantucket.

The house and location was great!
The house met all of our needs. We enjoyed gathering around the big table in the big kitchen and the outside deck every morning and evening. We were somewhat confused when we arrived that afternoon where everything was on the island, but by that evening we were finding things.
A few of of our older family members requested that there be a rubber mat or rubber decals so it wouldn't be so slippery in the showers.
Since we were at the island to learn about our Macy heritage, we took back home with us a lot of information and some wonderful memories. It was great we got to spend time together as a family in this wonderful Nantucket Island home. Thanks for everything!

Amazing Nantucket Rental
This property was perfect for our group MDW trip! The house was equipped with absolutely everything you could need, and the owners even left a great bottle of wine and welcome bag upon arrival. The house is much larger than it looks in pictures, and we had more than enough room to stay comfortably all weekend. The yard is perfect for spending time outside - we grilled on the deck and enjoyed eating outside. The owners were extremely easy to work with throughout the whole booking process, ensuring easy check in and answering all questions along the way. The location is great - walking distance to Stop & Shop and downtown. We will definitely stay here again!
