Wooli
Tucked between the river and the sea on a quiet, pristine corner of the Northern NSW coast and surrounded by Yuraygir National Park, Wooli has retained the laid back feel of a quiet seaside village long lost elsewhere - under 4 hours from Brisbane but 50 years back in time.
For meals, there is the wonderful Wooli Wooli cafe, Emilio's bistro at the Wooli hotel, Harry's Chinese restaurant at the legendary Wooli bowls club, or The 383, just next to the Wooli General store and service station. Further afield, the Minnie Water general store is well worth the trip for a memorable brekky or lunch.
Other facilities in Wooli include tennis courts, bowls club, post office and service station - and if you've forgotten anything else, Grafton is just 40 minutes away.
Things to do
Swimming
Wooli has a patrolled area at the end of the beach during school holiday periods - (great for a swim or boogie board), a protected lagoon at high tide by the river mouth (great for the little ones to splash), or take your pick of an abundance of quiet spots along miles of sandy river bank. Only a short drive away is the patrolled beach (weekends and school holidays) at Minnie Waters, and the stunning, protected cove at Diggers Beach (complete with a freshwater spring to wash off after your swim!).
Fishing
Wooli offers fantastic river, estuary, beach and deep sea fishing. Fishing charters and boat hire are available - or just throw a line in the ocean or wander over to the river for a good catch of bream, flathead, and whiting.
Walking
Take in the beauty of the environment at a leisurely pace - walk 45minutes South along the beach to the river mouth, North along the beach to Wilsons headland, or start out at Wilsons and walk the spectacular headland trail around to Diggers Camp (~3km) - a highlight of the area.
Rockpooling
There are great rockpools for exploring around Wilsons headland, or on the isolated South side of the Wooli river (you'll need a boat or canoe to cross), or head just up the road to Diggers Camp to explore the rock platform at low tide.
Diving and Snorkelling
To get started, strap on some goggles to see the sea life in the river, or head up the road to Minnie Waters (10min) for excellent snorkelling in the big lagoon at the Southern end of Main Beach.
For a real adventure, sign up for a snorkelling or diving trip out to the see the rich diversity of the sea life in the Solitary island marine park with Wooli dive centre and deep sea tours.
Cycling
The road from town to the river mouth (~3km) is a great ride for kids, and a perfect spot for a swim and a picnic - or for the more adventurous, explore the marked bike and hiking trails through the national park.
Surfing
There's a great range of quiet, uncrowded spots in the area depending on conditions - from beach breaks, a left hand break around Wilsons headland for experienced surfers, a right hander off the river mouth rock wall, or more protected beaches for beginners at Diggers Beach and Minnie Waters.
4WD
The vast wilderness of Yuraygir National Park offers a wide variety of opportunities to get off the beaten track, a wide range of beach and back-country tracks - for day trips, check the tides and try the track along the beach from Minnie Water to the Sandon river, or the back roads South to beautiful Station Creek
Wildlife
Wooli is surrounded by Yuraygir national park, protecting over 38,000 hectares, and nearly 60km of coastline, throughout which you can see the endangered coastal emu, wallabys, and over 180 species of birds - or watch the whales heading along the coast on migration (May to November).
Canoeing
Canoeing is a great way to explore the river - up to 20km of the upper waterways can be paddled if you time the tides - Canoes can be rented from Wooli River Lodges, or you can put in at the boatramp just 50m from the Purple Place.
Boating
Bring your boat or rent a tinny or pontoon boat from Wooli River Boat Hire for the day to explore the Wooli Wooli river -the nearest boatramp is just 100meters away - or join a charter with Wooli dive centre and deep sea tours, out to the incredible Solitary Islands marine park.
Sunsets
Or just sit at the top of the dune with a drink in hand, watching the dolphins in the surf as the sun goes down...

Comfortable, homely, complete with everything you need for a simple, relaxing, peaceful beach getaway. We loved the fenced garden, the beach access and dune lookout. We loved walking to the café and the friendliness of the locals. Sunrise and sunset. Happy dogs. Tranquility. Thank you!

A great little beach side shack. There was just 2 of us and our elderly dog but there are two more bedrooms with many bunks so can house many more. Has most things you want.Unusual split level layout not good for wheelchairs though (or elderly dogs) - otherwise a great place to stay for a beachside holiday

Great beach house, everything you need. Great to sit on the picnic bench looking at the ocean of an evening.

Good location and a nice house to stay in

All in all a great property, well stocked and clean The screens on the windows and doors could do with some maintenance as mosquitoes and midges were able to enter the house Also the keys and locks were very difficult to unlock the doors ..

great little property overall good value , would be good if basic salt pepper tea and coffee were supplied and front door is a little tricky to open there's a knack to it .
thank you for sharing your happy place .

No hanging space for clothes , wardrobe unable to open.
No cupboards to put food in. All cupboards too full.
Very strong dog odour in bedroom. Back door so hard to open with key.
Booked 4 nights, only slept one night, stayed with family at caravan park. Very old and worn linen.

The property was in a nice quiet location with easy access to empty beaches. Very relaxing environment.

It’s the perfect beach shack, not too flash but comfy as. Love Wooli. Commented on a few things in the visitors book.

We were so impressed with Wooli and The Purple Place that we cannot wait to get back there. The house was just lovely with all of the comforts of home in a prime position on the beach. My kids also said that they were really sad to leave as this was the perfect family holiday and to top it off we could have our dog Bella stay with us. We will be back!

We loved our stay in beautiful Wooli. The purple house is an oldie but a goody and great value for money in this lovely location. Ammenities like a well fenced yard and proximity to everything made it perfect for our pooches as well as us. A coffee or glass of wine on our private table on the sand dunes was a great way to start and finish the day. There was everything needed in the property to relax in a funky little home away from home. My partner and I along with our pugs and Pomeranian can’t wait to come back. The only little bit of feedback was that the property could have been cleaner but hey we were too chilled out to worry!

Overall a nice place with a lovely view from the duneside table up from the back gate. Beach access a few doors down was convenient.
Disappointing that I was told the bath wasn’t operational after I paid. It was a main selling point for me.
I’ll be back when they get that fixed.
It would be great if other maintenance issues could be addressed and the grounds maintained because struggling to operate locks/stove/open windows etc took away from an otherwise charming, relaxed, old fashioned vibe.
I did appreciate the library and board games.

The accommodation was fine, quiet, well positioned, clean, rustic and we enjoyed our stay. Luckily had read previous comments and brought toilet paper, tea towels, Chux towels for wiping down benches an bathroom.

Great retro beach house, very comfy and everything you need. Dog friendly which was great.

Lovely Home away from Home. Id like to report the Internet wasn't working and the DVD player was knackered and Dish washer was out of service too. I rigged up a Hot spot from my phone for Internet and that kept my lady happy:-) Also the left hand front bedroom window lock is missing a clasp to lock the window so might be best to address that for your security reasons, I told the Handyman that made the dog fence and mowed the lawns with reference to the window lock. Thank you so much again for entrusting your house to us, we left it very very clean. I wish for you both Good Fortunes, Good Health and Good Times.

Great location and loved the retro feel of the place.
The picnic table on the dune was a wonderful spot for whale watching and we really appreciated the binoculars.
My only feedback- the house could have been cleaner ( eg: dirty window sills with dead insects etc).
Was also disappointed that the yard was missing the front gate so we had to keep our old dog on a leash for the duration of the stay.
Hope the feedback is useful.

Great , relaxing beachfront spot.
Great weekend here. Quirky beach shack. Loved Wooli and the fabulous beach front location. Would be ideal if the house had beach access from the dunes , but access is only a short walk down the road, about 3 houses away, so still close.
Tidy , but I think it needs a really good deep clean and lots of maintenance needed. The beautiful sleepy town location reminds me of beach holidays as a child. Lots of fun here. Thank you .

Perfect Beach Holiday House
We had the perfect relaxing break by the beach. On arrival the house was spotlessly clean and tidy. The location was right on the beach with a fully fenced yard for the dogs. We watched the sunrise each morning from the excellent vantage point up behind the house and spent hours there with the telescope watching fishing boats, dolphins and whales. Heaps of 'toys' in the shed to use -fishing rods, surfboards, kayaks, goggles & flippers which we used. Recommend a meal at Harrys Chinese restaurant at the bowling club just a few minutes walk down the road. The bistro at the hotel on the way into Wooli was also great for fresh oysters and a cold beer. Also went for a drive to Diggers Camp for safe swimming and a snorkel-just gorgeous. Would recommend taking in your food supplies as the one local shop is expensive, but good for emergencies. This was one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever had (we went mid week) and we will be back.

The house is the quintessential beach shack. Loads of shade in the yard which is a bonus. Wooli itself is an adorable town perched close to the illaroo national park campground and Sandon river. There was a bit of confusion about pets, just to be clear the website says pets inside ok, just not in bedrooms or on furniture. There is a notice in the house saying pets not allowed inside. The yard was secure enough, however we needed to lean something against the entry gates to ensure our dogs couldn't get out. Loved our stay, comfortable beds, great location. There are very limited eating out options in Wooli. Even though the Chinese is pretty good, and you can get basics at a premium from the general store, bring what you need.
