My room was upgraded because no one else was staying at the hotel when I was there (more on this later).
The room that I was upgraded to was large, but fairly bare.
The hotel is in a good location, a short walk from Lalibela’s famous churches.
The manager was able to organise a vegan breakfast for me, which was greatly appreciated.
While the property is fine, prospective guests need to be aware that Lalībela is currently unsafe and, like all other destinations in the Amhara region, should be avoided.
Lalibela is under a state of emergency, with a 6am - 7pm curfew.
The government and FANO are engaged in a war that periodically becomes very intense.
Flights between Lalibela and Addis Ababa may be cancelled at short notice.
While I was in Lalibela, government shelling was frequently heard (which rattled Lalibela and, for a tourist [the locals have become inured to it] was quite terrifying!).
The government currently only controls the airport and Lalibela. It does not control the road between the airport and Lalibela, nor does it control the countryside around Lalibela.
The relationship between the government troops stationed in Lalibela and the townsfolk of Lalibela (many of whom support FANO) is tense. There are intermittent killings by FANO within the area of Lalibela under government control.
All internet access in Lalibela has been banned by the government (albeit locals, at great risk, find ways to circumvent this ban).
Don’t necessarily trust a travel agent if they tell you that the situation in Lalibela is OK. People in Addis Ababa frequently don’t know the situation on the ground in Lalibela.

The staff is very kind and helpful, the room big and clean with a nice view on the garden. The location is not far from the main gate to the churches. WiFi works good.

Friendliness of the staf, who arranged my excellent guide. Beautiful building with a nice though not spectacular view. Great bar around the corner and resaaaurant (Kan) within walking distance
breakfast was a bit limited. No swimming pool.

Very nice and pleasant hotel close to the stone churches. The hotel manager Thomas arranged for us some very interesting tours and was a precious guide for Lalībela and surroundings.

Very central location, walking distance from main attractions.
Staff is polite and nice, rooms are spacious and clean. It's a relatively new hotel.
I had an unplanned dinner at the restaurant and it was really tasty.

This is a great little hotel with very friendly staff. Nowhere else in Ethiopia we felt as well cared for as in Bete Serkie. The room was spacious and in good condition. We would go there again.

Thanks so much! Wonderful trip for our family. Close to everything we needed! An easy walk to restaurants (Kana, Fikr Juice across the street) and a short bajaj ride to Ben Ababa and Ma'ed. We all felt safe and cared for during covid and the election uncertainty. The rooms were beautiful, comfortable, and very clean. Breakfast was more than we expected and so appreciated for our group. Extra attention was given to the toddlers in our group, and we felt right at home after we checked in. ALL the staff was wonderful. We will be back! :)

I have not seen them all but I honestly think that this is the best hotel in Lalibela: centrally located, modern, safe, comfortable and more than value for money. The room was immense (for a solo traveler at least), WiFi fast and stable, water in the shower hot and abundant. Bete Serkie stands next to the town's main square, so souvenir shops, restaurants, convenience stores and a pub are next door. The famous rock-hewn churches are a short tuk-tuk ride away.
Breakfasts could have been richer and more varied.

I really enjoyed staying in Bete Serkie. It's walking distance from the churches, there are many shops around, the room was very spacious and clean, and the staff was very helpful. My room also had a nice view of Lalibela and the mountains. They appointed me to a guide, Thomas, who was also excellent and took care of everything I needed.
If I had to appoint a problem, there would be only one: the water pressure at the shower was low, but that didn't spoil my stay at all.
