In the background the Hotel Sardinero located in the Plaza de Italia and overlooking the sandy beach. The Sardinero was in 1840 a rugged area around Santander. 26 Since 1850, the first tourists began arriving and some facilities were created (bathroom booths, sheds ...). As a result of the summer of Queen Elizabeth II in El Sardinero in 1861 and Amadeo de Savoie in 1872, the area acquired great fame and began to attract large numbers of tourists. Located in the northeast corner of the city, the area in which the Lighthouse of Cabo Mayor is located is part of a larger area constituted by the headlands of Cabo Mayor and Cabo Menor. The physical configuration of this space is defined by its particular geomorphology, marked by the beaches and cliffs of its coastal edge and a rugged relief with maximum heights of 50 meters above sea level. Historically located on the periphery of the city, the area of Cabo Mayor and Cabo Menor has welcomed relevant uses and functions: maritime signal, defensive enclave, racecourse, camping, public park, golf course, etc. It was thus constituted in a tourist landmark and in one of the areas with the greatest landscape and environmental variety.

Insalubre!
