We stayed in the cottage, a small apartment just right for 2. We were able to snorkel and kayak right off the property into the bay. The bay had many colorful fish feeding off the coral reef, and we spent our time relaxing and enjoying the water.

We chose this cottage based on the recommendation of friends, and we couldn't have been happier with having this as our home base for our Big Island adventures. To wake up overlooking Kealakekua Bay, with dolphins jumping and splashing, to morning kayaking over to the best snorkeling in Hawaii at the Captain Cook Monument, to sunset cocktails on the deck, to the sound of surf lulling us to sleep, the Lawai'a Sea Lodge Cottage was the perfect location for our first trip to Hawaii. On-site caretakers Jessa and Li'a were so warm and helpful, and Li'a's stories about his work to restore the heritage of his family's homestead were both informative and inspiring. There was more watersport gear than we could know what to do with, and the snorkeling right at the shore by the boat ramp was the best I'd ever experienced...until we went across the bay, which is off the charts for the clarity, calm waters, and abundance and diversity of colorful fish. The cottage is small and rustic, but clean and cozy, so perfect for two people who really love each other. And it's not the most private place. Several properties share the waterfront and sporting equipment, and you can expect people from the close adjacent cottages to be walking by your windows frequently. But we had a lovely community of neighbors, everyone was respectful of everyone's space, and all you could ever hear after sunset was the lapping of the waves on the lava shore. Mahalo!

Lovey place to stay with lots nearby to do. We snorkelled, SUPed, kayaked with dolphins, explored the shoreline and nearby" beaches". We sat and enjoyed the view! The host / staff were accessible and responsive to ensure we had whatever we needed.

Perfect for amazing, easy water access immediately on property. Dolphins, sharks, rays, eels and more. Photos accurately depict the cottage - it is not fancy, but quite comfortable for 2 adults. On-site property managers Jessa and Li’a added extra warmth and sparkle to our stay - mahalo!! We would absolutely stay here again when visiting the Big Island.

The cottage is just like the photos but even more amazing in person! It’s at the bottom of a steep, windy road so really not near anything which was just fine with us. Comfy bed, very clean, everything we needed was included (but bring your own ground coffee to brew in the Mr Coffee). The location is incredible and the kayaks and SUP and snorkeling and private sea wall right out back made the trip! Jessa is on site and super helpful. Turn off the fan to sleep so you can hear the waves. No AC needed. You will share the kayaks and snorkeling gear with the properties on either side. Not an issue for us because we had great and friendly neighbors. We’d recommend this place in a heartbeat. Favorite place we’ve ever stayed!

This is one of the best places to stay for water access in Kealakekua Bay. Although the cottage is a bit rustic, it is charming in an old style Hawaii way.

Love
We love it, not fancy but if you really want the experience of staying on the water this is your place. If you're a resort lover it may not be. I have stayed at different resorts and this private experience beats all of them for me. If you're prissy go to a resort!

Awesome place to stay
We had a wonderful stay and look forward to staying there again. The location is great, and the atmosphere can not be beat. Our hostess was very attentive, kind, and went way above and beyond to make our stay the very best.

Waterfront sunsets
The cottage is part of a group of rental houses right on Napo'o po'o Pier with awesome views west across the bay towards Captain VCook memorial. Water access from the property is relatively easy for kayaking and snorkeling. The facility is clean and comfortable with just a few lacks, mainly patio tables for wine glasses and coffe cups. Hot-tub is a nice treat. On-site help is caring and friendly, and owner response is prompt.

Oceanfront with kayaks
We rented this place for the easy access to kayaks, and had an amazing time. You can snorkel directly from the property and kayak around the bay. Hearing the waves at night was magical.

Like living on the ocean, from land
This was our second time staying in this cottage. We would spend weeks there if we could! It has a simple, almost rustic feel--with screen windows (no glass), sound of surf all night, and the perfect table outside to sit and watch the blue, blue ocean. It is not totally private when other guests are staying in main house, but the host Jessica is attentive, sets a friendly tone, and makes sure the yard & boathouse are ship-shape. We look forward to returning.

Special Place
This is an amazing place, a unique way to be close to a very special bay for snorkeling and kayaking. To truly experience Hawaii. I loved listening to the waves crash all night through the screened windows. The lack of AC is not an issue temperature-wise, but it can be humid, so just know that this is closer to glamping than a resort experience. It's clean and very well-stocked, especially the kitchen. Jessa, who takes care of the property, was very friendly and helpful and made me feel like ohana. I'm already planning my return!

Wonderful spot on the coast, watching the waves and falling asleep to the sound of them crashing on the rocks. Lots of spinner dolphins in the bay and fun kayaking. We will be back!

Great location
We snorkeled with many fish out front along with turtles, dolphins and whales. We saw a baby before and learning to swim. Lots of breaches and whale in the bay. It was so amazing. We have been coming here for 20 years and this was our best trip yet. Can’t wait to return next year. See you 12/17/21.

Kea Bay
Open air, sea breeze, waves lapping, crashing at times, Kea Bay always in sight. Kayakers and snorklers frolicking. Perfect!

Lawai'a Cottage on Kealakekua
If you enjoy kayaking and snorkeling in warm coral reef filled waters then this is a perfect place for you. Depending on the size of your party, there are three different rental options on the property. As there were only two of us, the cottage was perfect. The owners and the property manager were easily accessible and had lots of great information to share. It's a bit off the beaten path which is always what we are looking for. Wish we could have stayed longer and will most likely stay there again.

Authentic Hawaii, cottage style
We stayed for 9 nights in October during the Ironman World Championship week. We wanted to be close enough to get into Kona, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle.
The cottage is small but perfect for a couple. The windows are screened, no glass, totally in touch with the sounds of nature and the ocean 24/7, and we loved it. The sun gets hot coming through the windows from 3-6pm, but the fans in the cottage help tremendously, and the trade winds are divine!
The view: BREATHTAKING. The experience of snorkeling in the back yard bay while swimming daily with the local dolphin pods: LIFE CHANGING! They showed up every morning around 6:30.
The bed and sofa daybed were comfortable and linens soft. Kitchen is well-equipped and has items like salt pepper and olive oil, as well as extra garbage bags. This property supports recycling, and has a very organized way to separate your recycling items.
In the back is a shed, a few decks/terraces, and a hot tub. The shed has all sorts of life vests, snorkeling gear, and fins, as well as ice chests and water shoes kindly left behind by other guests. The kayaks on property were well cared for and easy to use. The snorkeling in the bay is just amazing!
LOCATION: with Kailua-Kona only 25 minutes north, and the volcano national park 90 minutes south, the cottage is in an excellent location. We made a day trip to Hilo and around the island even though we left later around 11am. Lots of local breakfast and coffee farms are right here in Captain Cook! Also, just 4 mi down the SAME ROAD the cottage is on is Two Step Beach which is another living aquarium for snorkeling and swimming, in a lava flow beach. Next to it is a state park and sacred burial grounds of the Ali’i (Kings) with iconic petroglyphs (think tikis).
With so much to see and do, it is so nice to come back for a romantic sunset and either cook some dinner or head out for the evening!
Thank you Ama and to Dave for the hospitality and your guidance on getting the most of our Hawaii vacation!! -Tracie C from SLidell LA

Great place
This is a beautiful place to stay, and I'd stay there again in a heartbeat. But: the instructions for how to check in could be clarified. Note that if you have AT & T, your cell phone will not work to call to get help--and even if your cell does work, the number provided rings on Oahu!
