About this cottage rental
A Converted schoolroom from the 1960’s with hints of mid century decor and luxury finishes, this charming self contained property is located in the historic goldfields village of Chewton, a few minutes drive from Castlemaine. A quiet setting on the owners fully fenced property (safe for your pets) you have use of the BBQ and any of the veggies in the garden. Stroll to the Red Hill Hotel for a delicious meal, open Friday evening and weekends, and it’s a short drive to the Wesley Hill market which operates each Saturday morning, wineries and many other attractions are a short drive away.
The building is separate from the main house so you have privacy and plenty of room to enjoy a meal or drink at the outdoor table.
Tea/coffee and breakfast staples are included in the well equipped kitchenette. Access to the BBQ and your pets are most welcome!
Please park anywhere on the left side of the drive. The accommodation is the building on the left, not the house facing the street. Enter down a couple of stairs on the right hand side and the door is next to the water tank. We are on town water and the tank is used for the garden.

Lovely converted demountable, very comfortable. Kathy made some delicious biscuits and cake for us, much appreciated. Also a very interesting book about the changes in Chewton from the gold mining era. Beautiful outlook and lovely walks in the local area.

Our stay with our pup was really comfortable, and Kathy even bakes us a chocolate cake and cookies.
Very prompt communication, and super quick check in process! I’d love to see what it’s like in warmer weather ☺️

Kathy was a lovely host who gave my husband and precious old dog a very warm welcome - including a wicked chocolate cake and very yummy homemade cheese biscuits.
The house was very clean and comfortable as well as including items required for a short stay such a coffee plunger and warm towel rack. My only recommendation would be a sign on the property as, even though Kathy's directions were fine, we were initially confused as to the location of the building due to the (gorgeous!) tree-covered location.
Highly recommended for a quiet stay away!

The property is on a block with the owners house but it is very private. The property is quirky as it's an old school building and I only stayed 2 nights but really enjoyed the afternoons as the sun filled the house.

I have to say this is the most well appointed stay I have ever booked. The rooms were lovely. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom spotlessly clean and great water pressure. Kathy left some delicious snacks for me. My dog was very welcome. Some really lovely walks in the area too.

Stayed for 4 nights over NYE. The school house cottage is a beautiful little place. Very quiet and private. The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed for our stay.
Kathy is an amazing host and we too were greeted with chocolate cake and savoury biscuits, which were delightful.
The cottage is pet friendly and there were plenty of nearby walking tracks to explore
Definitely recommend staying at the cottage if your after a peaceful, relaxing stay close to Castlemaine

A lovely piece of history - old school house- tucked away and quiet but only 5 minutes from the freeway and 5 the other way to Castlemaine. The space was lovely, functional and restful. Kathy arranged for the air conditioner to be going on arrival - much appreciated on a hot northerly wind day- and the special treats of chocolate cake and parmesan snacks - delicious extras and none left on departure! My furry friend and I settled right in and there was good space for him to sniff and wander outside. The little extras in the bathroom - heated towel rails and quality soaps - added a nice touch of luxury. The weekend was an annual sojourn to the area for me and some friends and this is a lovely find.

Chewton school house is a peaceful & stylish abode in the country. We were greeted with a fresh chocolate cake and cheesy biscuits, which was a lovely warm touch of greeting and the breakfast provisions were wonderful.
If you like style, peace and quiet, country comfort & a warm country greeting, it's the perfect place to stay while exploring the area.

Travelled up for a family birthday and a quick catch-up with extended family and friends… never enough time for everyone!! Really enjoyed the peace and quiet of the school house stay, very cozy and comfortable.

We all enjoyed our stay in this renovated demountable classroom. The space was very comfortable, and just the right size for my partner and I and our mini dachshund. Kathy was a wonderful host. The breakfast and afternoon tea provisions added such a lovely touch, and we especially loved the home-made biscuits and cake, as well as the freshly ground coffee for the French press.
We found the pillows a bit too big for our liking, and will probably bring our own next time. We also heard quite a few noises at night - mostly wildlife - which took a bit of getting used to, as well as an occasional bang that we think might have been either the wind, or the building expanding/contracting.
The gardens surrounding the accommodation are just beautiful, and our pup loved exploring the grounds.

Thank you Kathy

Kathy was very obliging and pleasant. The accommodation suited us well: clean and comfortable. Appreciated the chocolate cake and cheese biscuits, particularly. Breakfast provided was what we have at home: muesli etc. Our German Short-haired Pointer enjoyed sniffing out the garden. Had some great meals at the local pubs (Red Hill in Chewton and The Bridge in Castlemaine). In summary: a very enjoyable experience.

The property was clean and very comfortable. Little extras provided including snacks, books, puzzles, heated towel rack and more added to the enjoyment of the stay. Also very pet friendly. Although not being close to the main Castlemaine centre was a slight disadvantage for our stay, the garden setting is lovely.

What an amazing place Cathryn has! She has converted these old portables into a beautifully decorated place equal to Buckingham Palace (probably better). We watched the Coronation from it and would not have wanted to be anywhere else. So peaceful and quiet you could have heard the 63 gun salute from London. Beautiful and what a lady-in-waiting in Cathryn.

The house was very comfortable and was beautifully appointed with one-of-a-kind touches and furniture. Kathryn was very welcoming and all the provisions were very generous. Each room was wonderful and suited a short stay for anyone. All you need to make this house fabulous is a larger kitchen sink. The tiny dolls house sized sunk provided made it uncomfortable to wash up even a plate. On the whole, I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to visit this part of Victoria. Thanks Kathryn!

Such a lovely place and thoughtfully presented in all the special little touches, including some delicious extras that went above and beyond. Kathyrn also let me set up my telescope so I was able to photography "The Green Comet". It's the perfect base for a Photographic getaway in the goldfields.

Renting the schoolhouse for a couple of days was very relaxing and comfortable. There were many small touches which made it special and a little bit luxurious. Well chosen decor, beautiful afternoon light and only birdsong to interrupt the peace.

A lovely stay in a lovely small town. Kathy has put thought and effort into making this space comfortable and relaxing for visitors. The garden is such a lovely place to sit and enjoy the local bird sound. I’m sure we will be back to this lovely part of Victoria. Highly recommend.

This property is just fabulous, and exactly what we needed to relax after a crazy few weeks. It's beautifully finished, with access to gardens to enjoy and relax in and pet friendly too. A15 minute walk from a local pub, and a short drive to wineries or Castlemaine which is a busy country town with plenty to do. And the while little extra touches like a home baked cake just finished it off perfectly, I knew it was going to be a good stay as soon as I spotted the Yorkshire tea! Thanks for having us, it was exactly what we needed.

This lovely old school house was warm and inviting in bleak winter weather. Excellent bathroom facilities, a pleasing color palette and great lighting, lots of natural light, a delicious cake for afternoon tea and a very comfortable bed. Nothing was lacking.
