Great little cottage!
My husband, small dog, and I stayed here for a week and it was lovely. Everything was clean, and the location (right on the water and walking distance to restaurants/shops) was perfect. There is a pull-out couch, but it probably would have been really tight with more than two people. And as a previous reviewer mentioned, there is no WiFi (not a big deal if you want to truly unplug though). Overall, however, we very much enjoyed our stay and would come back without hesitation!

Beautiful
All in all, a very pleasant experience as I was a first time user of this type of service. Very nice property and beautiful lake! All the locals are very friendly too. There is no WIFI as was stated, but I was ok with that since I needed the peace and quiet. Also no directions on tv use, but again I was ok with that...my boyfriend was not! I personally did not see the need for all the extra furniture in the bedroom (which is a bit run down if you're concerned with aesthetics) and we didn't know the refrigerator needed to be plugged in until the next day when we realized our food had to be discarded because it was warm. That should definitely be told to customers!

Great little cottage near downtown Three Lakes.
This cabin is clean and comfortable. It seems to match the description well. The area is quiet and close to downtown. Park you car and walk to all the happenings. Two of us found our stay comfortable, I think it would be tight with more people. There is no air conditioning, which is common and 99% of the time just fine, but we picked a hot week, so it was warm but there are fans and plenty of windows to help cool off. Nice access to Maple Lake; swim, boat and fish. It is on the chain, so you could make your way around. There is plenty of green space to spread out between the cabin and the lake; shade and sun.

DO NOT STAY!!!!!! FILTHY!!!!!!!!!!
We booked before the other 1 star review was up on mouse droppings. I called VRBO to pull my reservation and they told me they would work with me if the house showed any sign of mouse droppings.
We arrived around 5pm and the front door was covered in spider webs. We were late for a charity dinner so we dropped our bags in the screen porch and left, not looking through the house.
After dinner, around 9:30 we arrived again. As we walked in it was cluttered. The bedroom was NOT remodeled, as stated in the description. It was straight out of the 70s. There was so much old furniture you could barely move. Spider webs covered the corners of the closet. There was debris in between the mattress and the bed-frame, including half a pill and mouse droppings. Water damage was evident on the ceiling. The couch had dead bugs and dust bunnies behind it. When I got to the bathroom there were spiders in the shower and a towel hung by two wire clothes hangers covering the window. That night when I grabbed a towel, I felt something fall into my hand-mouse droppings. I screamed, shook my hand and they fell to the ground. I grabbed a red towel and found more mouse droppings. We did not feel safe/comfortable staying here and called VRBO.
VRBO told me "it is just a little mouse poop" and I "should be fine". They refused to get me out of the home even though they had not listened to my concerns. They told me to call the owner. She acted surprised, saying she was being pranked and offered housekeeping to come out after leaving them a voicemail. I said I couldn't (it was 10pm, who knows how long the wait would’ve been). I offered her pictures to show housekeeping and she declined. It's not my problem the house was dirty and I asked her for a refund and to leave. She agreed to a full refund and we left. The key lockbox was deactivated since the code expired, I had to bring it back the next morning at 9:30.
It’s been 3 months and I still DO NOT HAVE A REFUND. She also TOOK MY DAMAGE DEPOSIT!VRBO CONFIRMED NO DAMAGE TO THE PROPERTY. VRBO refuses to help but admits Paula is in the wrong. She falsely claims I made up the mouse poop/filth and “checked in late” (lies) and won’t answer my calls (claims harassment/husband is a “lawyer”). She says she took the DAMAGE deposit to pay for the cleaning crew and “inspector”?! Not what a damage deposit is for! I paid a cleaning fee when I reserved. I am fighting the charges through my bank. I reported her to VRBO.

Awful experience
We noticed a mouse problem about an hour after arrival when we opened the sofa bed. The inside was filthy. It was clear it had not been cleaned in a long time. There were food, candy wrappers, a scissors (?!?), and copious amounts of mouse droppings inside.
We reached out to the property owner immediately. We repeatedly offered to send pictures as proof. We indicated that we did not feel comfortable with our children sleeping on the sofa bed, but would make do (ie., have them camp out in the car) if she would comp us the extra fee we paid to have a 4th person stay in the cabin.
Instead we got multiple long, rambling phone and email messages in which she:
- Repeatedly insisted she’d never had a complaint about mice and could not possibly have mice (despite a prior review in which the guests reported the mouse issue to her).
- Said we must be lying about having seen food and candy wrappers in the sofa, because no one allowed in the cabin would eat such things.
- Blamed prior guests for bringing a gerbil into the cabin.
- Indicated that her husband was a lawyer (which we took to be a threat).
- Accused us of being in cahoots with the last guests because we apparently came from the same general area.
- Indicated that she will be taking legal action against the prior guests.
We felt extremely uncomfortable and opted to leave for a nearby hotel that would take us and our dogs. VRBO has indicated that they will only give a refund in cases of black mold, cockroaches or bed bug infestation. For mice, they would send a cleaner over. Expensive lesson learned; stick to rentals with good reviews.
Other things you should know:
- The cabin is in a group of cabin condos just off of the main street in Three Lakes. There is a shared pier and fire ring near the beach.
- The boat is a row boat stored behind the cabin that hasn’t been cleaned or readied for use and would need to be carried a good distance to the lake. Owner indicated that the oars are “around somewhere”, but we did not find them before leaving.
- Only bedding was a new package of sheets that the owner’s realtor dropped off for the bed, some throws on the sofa, and some old sheets stored in the base of the bed. The owner said there were blankets stored in the bed frame, but we could not find them and the property manager said that he had to throw out the bedding because it was soiled. Bring your own sleeping bags?
-Extra fees for more than 3 family members

Memorial Day Hell Weekend
We drove 4.5 hours, had brake issues on the way up, ate dinner, went to go to sleep at 11:00 only to discover mouse droppings all over in our bed, linens, pillows. The kids pulled out their bed only to discover the same thing. After further investigation we had a knife under our mattress and kids had a pair of scissors in their bed. The mice had also left dropping on the clean stored linen and towels in the bathroom. We called the owner immediately. Needless to say this was unsanitary to stay the next 3 nights in. My husband was beside himself for the amount of money we had paid. He contacted a hotel near by that had 2 rooms left which we could also bring our pets at 1 in the morning. I was still in contact with the owner which I also forwarded all of the pictures I had taken of our findings. It came to the point I felt as if she was suggesting we planted the mouse droppings ourselves as she kept saying they never had an issue with mice in 30 years. Regardless of that the fact of the matter is she does now and what is going to be the resolution. I have pictures and video available upon request. The next morning my husband had to have our vehicle checked again to make sure everything was repaired for us to travel home safely. We then pacled up and decide this situation can't be fixed as there was so much mouse droppings that even if it was cleaned the mice are still there and this would not be healthy, so we returned the keys and we drove home 4.5 hours. This was an absolute nightmare! The owner said there will be a refund which I sure hope so!
