Answers to some frequently asked questions-
*Yes, I feel safe in this area. While Mexico has gained a reputation for crime over the last several years, Merida and the Yucatan boasts being the safest area. Most crimes committed are those of opportunity, not violence. Use common sense as you would when traveling anywhere. Do not flash cash or expensive jewelry and do not leave valuables out in plain site or leave doors unlocked. As added security measures, the house is equipped with an alarm system and exterior security cameras that do not invade guests privacy.
*You will need to bring Pesos for shopping in Chuburna and Chelem. Credit Cards and American dollars are not as widely accepted as in tourist areas.
*Your Sam's and Costco membership cards from home will work in Merida.
*Do not drink the water, even to brush your teeth. Purified drinking water will be provided for you. You can make ice with the purified water or buy it in town. It is safe. You can also order drinks in town with ice and not worry. They are using purified water to make their ice. We have never had a problem.
*You do not have to speak Spanish, but knowing some basic words help. Many locals speak English, but not everyone.
*Do your homework on rental cars before you come. Many post insanely cheap prices per day online and charge you outrageous amounts for "mandatory" insurance. Check with your local insurance agent and call your credit card company to confirm exactly what coverage you may have out of the country if any, and what you will need to purchase.
*There is a bus service to and from Progreso. They run approximately every 15 minutes. There are also taxi services available.

We are already planning a return visit.

This home was an amazing launch pad for our first trip to the Yucatan. We were a party of 5 adults and 1 teen. The house was perfect for our group. The 5 beds with baths worked out amazing so we didn't have any complaints from siblings about sharing. The house had everything we needed to cook, relax and just enjoy being there. The yard, pool and access to the beautiful beach couldn't have been better. We also very much enjoyed the town. We embraced the local culture and loved visiting the local butchers, pescaterias, and tortillerias. some of the freshest food we've ever had came from these markets. The towns people were so lovely. the location also allowed easy access to Merida, Progresso and other areas you may want to explore. For me, I would feel better on my next visit being a little more fluent in Spanish. I was able to get by with what I knew and what i picked up while there but having some spanish would definitely help. Also, when getting pesos, you will need smaller bills. The airport exchanged our dollars and gave us 500 peso bills which a lot of small shops wouldn't accept. We were able to find a bank in Merida while there to trade them for smaller ones. Veronica, the hostess, was also so helpful. She was very easy to reach and responded to all of our questions very quickly. We had an amazing time!

First, Rena's beachfront property, Casa Del Mar Esmeralda was every bit as beautiful as advertised. And before we even arrived Rena's hospitality was on display, as she answered several questions we had about the area: travel, security, sharks (lol), Cenotes, La Ruinas, etc. Her and her staff were very accommodating from the time we arrived, which included arrangements for my partner Melissa to actually check in a few hours earlier than me. Any questions or concerns we had were answered promptly. Perhaps most importantly her property provided a beautiful, peaceful backdrop for us to have a transcendent trip to this beautiful region of the Yucatan; we spent many hours connecting Spiritually, mesmerized by the Gulf of Mexico, moonlit nights and sunny days. We will be back soon and hopefully we'll have the opportunity to stay at Rena's beautiful Casa Del Mar Esmeralda.

This was the most satisfying VRBO property we’ve ever rented. Having lived in Mexico City in the 80s we had realistic expectations regarding utilities. The generator worked perfectly and any issues were taken care of promptly. Please be sure to use Rena’s recommendations for transportation and caterers. Carla made two outstanding meals for us and Juan was so accommodating! He drove the 8 of us to Uxmal and swimming in a Cenote. He steered us to an excellent guide at Uxmal. He was an EXCELLENT safe drive . Carla and Juan speak excellent English. We were there at a beautiful time of year. Beautiful weather. Thank you to Rena and her charming and gracious local team!

Booked this rental for a group of friends to meet up and enjoy the ocean. Overall, it was a lovely stay. The house was spacious, cute, and clean. Having the pool and private beach right there was really wonderful. We especially appreciated the individual room AC units. Kitchen was decently stocked, but had room for improvement in the spices (no pepper) and the stoves only partially working.
However, there were also some concerns that, while they didn't ruin the trip, did cause a significant enough disruptions to result in plan changes.
We were warned of the power outages, which luckily were minor during our stay. But, there's also nothing to serve as a backup such as a generator, or better yet, solar-panels. More concerningly though, there was an issue of the water going out intermittently for 2.5 of our 4 full days. The property manager was very responsive and the plumber came out within a couple hours each time. But it still was not fully resolved for a good portion of our stay.
The other big issue is that the front door was very challenging to unlock. It would take us several minutes each time to find the right places to push and lift the door to get it. The first time we tried to unlock it from the inside it took us upwards of 20 minutes to figure it out. For us, it was just a big hassle but it could be a safety risk if someone needed to get out quickly but couldn't get the door open.
All that being said, it was a lovely house that, for the most part, served our needs.

Our family enjoyed the pool and the beach, literally just walk right onto the beach and no tourists! It was nice to relax and enjoy with the family or head into town or daily excursion cenotes, Progreso, Mayan Ruins, so I recommend you rent a car. The place was clean, had plenty of space, cooking utensils, places to hang out on deck and patio/pool area and amazing sunsets! If you want to relax and enjoy yourself and avoid crowds this is a great place (private driveway fits 2 cars w/ gate) You are located in small town where everything closes by 8:00 so if you want nightlife it is only 15 minutes to Progreso. Lisandro was easy to get ahold of and gave us good recommendations or was able to take care of minor needs that came up over the week. Gave us great recommendation with local fisherman, we made fresh ceviche and took our snapper to local restaurant who cooked our catch of the day.

My family and I are not touristy people so when we came here it was perfect for us. The house is huge and beautiful with plenty of space for a huge family. The beach is in your backyard which is a must for us. Jorge was amazing. He was there the minute you’d call for anything and speaks great English. Our car rental was made through Rena and she was way easier to deal with than a rental agency. My only negative was the breeds are not soft enough but that is a personal preference. We drove around and found flamingos in their natural habitat which was a ten for my husband. He loves those birds. We will definitely be back.

This villa was well appointed with pretty much everything we needed for our stay. Lots of kitchen tools, beach towels, toys and pack-n-play for our 2-year-old. It has large rooms with great views and private bathrooms. Everything worked with exception to a couple things (ceiling fan, running water) that the property manager fixed immediately. The beach is quite nice, especially if privacy is a premium for you.

A week in paradise
My family of 11 spent an amazing week at Casa del Mar Esmerelda. This was our second trip to the area. The villages of Chelem and Chuburna are laid back with a large expat population. The area is full of wonderful people and feels very safe. The house is beautifully appointed. It had everything we needed plus some. The layout of the house worked perfectly for 3 couples (two with young children), and two single individuals. Everyone had their own room/space. The beach and views are amazing. The location of the house is central to many interesting ruins, cenotes, wild

Lots of R & R!
We came to relax and wind down, and this was the perfect place! The few problems we had were quickly fixed by Veronica. I would definitely rent a car if you intend to do any sightseeing. The water was extraordinary for swimming. Bring lots of books because you will want to just hang out in the beautiful back yard area, read and swim all day... a lovely place! Also visit Chelem for classic small town Mexican street food.

Relaxing Paradise
The house was spacious and optimized views of the gulf .
Beds were very comfortable and we loved the sounds of waves all night. The extended patio offered areas of sun and shade for relaxing and dining. Lisandro was responsive , kind and professional. It was a perfect getaway!

Relaxing Beauty
This is a lovely, well laid out home on the beach with beautiful views of the ocean. Rena, the host is exceedingly helpful with resources and connection with property manager Veronica. Veronica shared resources so we could set up massages in the house and hire Andres to cook authentic meals for us several days - He was the BEST part of our trip! Loved walking the beach, the Monday market at Natural Thangs and had takeout pizza from Bistro Maasai Maya. Mostly enjoyed the house, patio and beach. Veronica also directed us on where to get COVID tests before flying home.
Don't expect high speed wifi or great water pressure but who cares really when you are in paradise

Amazing location for a large group/family
We had a wonderful stay here in Chuburná Puerto. The house has a perfect location for exploring this corner of the Yucatán! The house is huge - much larger than appears in the photos! There is plenty of space for a large family, a big group, or several couples to not be in each other’s way. All of our minor issues were promptly dealt with. A 5/5 stay all around.

Awesome private beach, secluded from others!
This property is in a wonderful location if you're looking to get away from the tourist-y crowds elsewhere on the Yucatan peninsula.
There were definitely some maintenance items that we ran across and the home needs to be fixed up a little, but we didn't feel that it was a major hindrance (other than some of the A/C issues).
Overall, my family and I loved the private beach and the plunge pool that was on site. We spent most of our time outside and really enjoyed the location. I would recommend this place and aside from a few maintenance concerns, I'd stay here again. Thank you.

Million dollar view
This property is simply amazing. It's exactly as described more than enough space the rooms are very big. The appliances are up to date. The views of the gulf is amazing from both upstairs master bedrooms. The staff was very helpful in fact they went above and beyond for us. Veronica's assistant Susana is absolutely fantastic she assisted with everything from scheduling masseuse helping with our covid-19 test for our return. We had a cook prepare our meals I highly recommend trying her for the authentic Mayan culinary experience. Big thanks to Veronica and her staff for such a wonderful experience.

The house and property were awesome! Way beyond our expectations. You can through a coconut from the pool into the ocean if you choose to!!! There was a constant breeze from the ocean so it never seemed too hot. The kitchen was well equipped.... the only thing I could say negative is the knives could use a bit of sharpening ... but that is all!! The beds were very comfortable and the beautiful rooms all had their own bathrooms with a shower and often a tub. The washer and dryer there was a great thing to have available to keep all our beach clothes and towels clean. The beach was exceptional. In the morning the water was a bit calmer as the tide is out and as it comes in, the wind picks up and the waves get a bit bigger but still totally safe. U can walk out into the ocean for 100 feet and still touch the ocean floor. There are tons of birds that dive for dinner but snorkeling is not the greatest as the water kicks up a lot of sand. Morning walks to find sea shells is a must as well as watching the awe inspiring sun sets. This is truly a magical place. I can't wait until I'm able to go again.

Absolutely wonderful! Everything was exactly as it's shown. The house was perfect for our family, plenty of room, well stocked kitchen, linens etc. Veronica the property manager was awesome. She was always available to answer any questions. The meal she booked for us with the local ladies was superb! She came with them and helped with everything. Table clothes, flowers and margaritas all to make our experience memorable! I highly recommend this property! If it's a true Yucatan experience you're looking for, this is the place!

Stunning Beach Views
We enjoyed the property beautiful views, clean house and very clean beach. You definitely need a rental car if going off peak season. Internet at Mexico beaches goes in and out regardless of the house you rent . Loved that kitchen was stocked and two huge coolers if needed. Property Manager was a gem very attentive when needed throughout our stay! Would love some chairs on upstairs balcony to further enjoy spectacular sunset views! I would definitely recommend this property ! Kc

So great to be right on the beach!
We were looking for a remote getaway on the beach and this was the ideal place! It's between 2 small towns and we got to float in the ocean every day and walk on the beach.
We took day trips to Celestun, the cenotes and Merida and found great restaurants very nearby. It was a great experience!

Nice house with a MILLION DOLLAR view!
The house is very nice, we did have a power issue on our first day but it got resolved later that evening. The only complaint the others in our group had was with the water pressure -- it was very low -- but everyone got used to it. The house itself was roomy and had everything we needed for our stay. The location is GREAT! Sitting in the pool watching the waves was a group favorite! The kids in the group LOVED being able to find lots of sea shells every morning. We would recommend this house to anyone -- as a matter of fact we hope to visit again! Thank You Rena for everything!

Mexico 2018
We loved this place. From the moment we pulled up (in the dark) and we could hear the ocean we knew we were going to have so much fun. The house is so pretty and very spacious. We enjoyed being able to swim in the pool and have an amazing ocean view. You could literally throw a coconut from the pool to the ocean. Our property manager was so helpful. She answered all of our questions and even went and got a few items for us at the store the night we arrived. If you are looking for a breath taking experience... this is your place!

Property is true to photos
We were a group of seven staying at this property. It was great that everyone had their own room w/ private bathroom.
Amenities such as washer and dryer mean you don't have to pack a lot!
The property manager Veronica and assistant Angel were very hospitable, obliging and service oriented. We had the benefit of their local insights for excursions, shopping, groceries and a ride to and from the airport.
We love that this house was right on the beach and had a dip pool as well.
Best stamp of approval is that I would rent this property again and based on our experience, many of our friends would love to as well in the future.

An Amazing Getaway Week!
This was our first time booking a house rather than staying at an all inclusive. We definitely will be doing this again. The owner welcomed any questions we had. The property manager picked us up from the airport for a fee as we did not want to rent a car. She was friendly, courteous and available during the week if we needed anything. Wish we could have stayed longer

Perfect home on the beach for a family getaway
What an amazing location for a spring break trip! My sister lives in Merida, and this was my older kids' first trip to Mexico, so we were looking for a relaxing beach vacation to spend time with family (we have 5 kids, ages 16, 15, 11, 4, and 2). The home is spacious and comfortable. Even when my sister and her family (husband & 2 kids, ages 3 and 4 months) were visiting, we had plenty of room. All the kids loved playing in the pool in the back, which was very clean. The big kids came and went to the beach as they pleased--it's right at the back of the house and it was easy for parents at the pool to keep an eye on older ones at the beach. Modern refrigerator & stove w/ 6 burners--we cooked lunches and dinners most days, but went into the local town to a small carnival and for a seafood lunch. Plenty of bedrooms and everything was very comfortable and clean and in good working order. A 5-star experience!!

Amazing Ocean Front House!!
This house was more than we had hoped for. It is spacious, well equipped, has a great outdoor seating area that provides shade, wonderful beach and spectacular views. We felt very safe and secure with the gated entry and alarm system. The neighborhood is full of wonderful and helpful neighbors.
We were a group of 3 couples who have vacationed together at resorts in other parts of Mexico. We were looking for a non touristy vacation and this was perfect. We loved the experience of dining with locals and experiencing their culture. The property managers Martie and Veronica were awesome, so helpful with anything we needed. We had a few glitches and they were right on top of getting it taken care of it. Thank you Rena for letting us stay in your beautiful home. Unforgettable memories were made. It was the vacation of a lifetime.

Very Nice!
The property was as beautiful and spacious as described and pictured on the website, was well maintained, the appliances were up-to-date and worked well! I dealt with Rena, the owner, and was very impressed with the experience. Martie, the property manager we dealt with, was easy to work with, although we didn't have a lot of contact with her because we didn't encounter any significant problems.
There were four couples in our group and the house and casita easily accommodated all of our needs. Plenty of space for cooking, dining and lounging. The house is between Chuburna and Chelem; Chuburna is walkable but Chelem is not. There are two restaurants (Italian and Thai) within easy walking distance and other small ones in Chuburna and Chelem.
One of the couples found it to be a little too remote for them but the rest of us thought everything was just fine. Would stay there again!

Beautiful Beach House!
The location of the house is wonderful, right on the water on a quiet street between two small towns. The yard is great for a crowd, with plenty of seating, a lovely sitting pool, and a grill. Overall, the house is beautiful and fits so well with the local vibe; bright warm colors, clean lines, big windows and lots of light. Had every amenity we could have wanted, and the property manager was so helpful in terms of responsiveness and recommendations. Would visit again in a heartbeat!

This is the perfect home and I truly recommend it to anyone out there looking for a good vacation in an amazing home. All the pictures posted are very accurate but they don't do any justice on how beautiful this place is!!!! We will definitely be back!

Superb customer service!!
When going to a foreign country, you want someone you a trust to deliver on the quality of the home and the customer service. Owners are very responsive and their property manager Martie and all of her staff are very attentive and quick to help in any way. House was great. Lots of drinking water, great big new refrigerator, well stocked kitchen for cooking 3 square meals a day, lots of linens and towels (we were ten occupants).
In short, it was a dream to do business with Rena the owner and Martie the property manager.
