We spent a week in mid August at this property and it was a wonderful experience. The studio was comfortable and well equipped with amazing views of the water. It is a remote location but if it's quiet and nature you are looking for, you couldn't do better.

Although Mother Nature put a damper on the stay with rainy days and fog. We still where able to explore the many attractions Lubec and surrounding areas had to offer. Including West Quaddy light, Campobello island, St Andrews in New Brunswick to name a few. The hosts Chris and Diane were wonderful and we look forward to going back again some time in the near future.

Loved the location with a great view off the deck for morning coffee. Very clean and had all the amenities you need including washer and dryer. Very quiet and peaceful. Good location as well for visiting local attractions. The hosts are very nice and want to ensure you have an enjoyable stay. You can see it in all the details they put in the rental property. Will be staying again our next trip up to Maine.

This is a perfect spot to get away from everything! The apartment was clean and had everything we needed. The hosts, Diane and Chris made sure to answer any questions and were very
responsive. The property is gorgeous and
so relaxing! Even though it rained most of the time, we enjoyed our short stay. We just needed more time to enjoy the entire area. Exceptional, highly recommended!

Noisy Basement Bedroom
Beautiful home in a peaceful location, but if you need use the basement for sleeping, bring ear-plugs.

Beautiful home in an ideal location.
It doesn’t get any better than this. The pictures don’t do justice to this beautiful house with an amazing view. Everything you want is here - kayaking with seals, biking, beautiful hikes. And the owners, Chris and Diane are so helpful and kind. A wonderful vacation! Thank you.

Amazing house and location.
This was an absolutely beautiful home in a gorgeous location! The view of the bay kept us coming back for more pictures as we watched for wildlife and enjoyed some stunning sunsets! The house was immaculate and had everything we needed for a quiet, relaxing vacation. Pictures can't really do it justice. We especially enjoyed the dining table on the big balcony overlooking the bay. We ate all our meals there.
We visited East Quoddy Lighthouse, Acadia National Park, Reversing Falls, and Moosehorn National Wildlife Reserve, where we were able to photograph a young bald eagle in its nest. We did some hiking to see the beautiful coastline of Maine; even the mile walk up the main drive was beautiful. All in all a very enjoyable vacation. Be sure to stop in at the Chowder House in Eastport if you get a chance for some excellent chowder and blueberry pie! And Diane, thank you for all your help and being available to answer all our questions. We've learned in the past that where you stay can make or break a vacation, and this home was very definitely an awesome base for exploring the northern coast of Maine!

relaxation
we had an amazing time at “The Helm” it was comfortable, relaxing, with breathtaking sunsets every night. Off in the distance you can hear the Reversing Falls. Which is a must see!! Every morning we woke to bald eagle chatter! We even had a little bird who fancied himself in our vehicle side mirrors. It was hysterical to watch him... the kids had fun playing with the foosball table.
The house had everything we needed. I brought most of my own items to use, but if i forgot something the house had it.
Overall we had a wonderful treading stay.

As you turn into the driveway “The Helm” is an impressive spacious home on its own point overlooking an expanse of water and wilderness. The home is comfortable, well appointed and decorated. We particularly enjoyed all of the the Navy memorabilia since we are from Navy families. The back deck was very pleasant for eating our meals and watching for wildlife and tide changes. The basket of travel info and brochures was very helpful, and we enjoyed our trips to Campobello, Quoddy Head lighthouse and a nature/whale boat trip with Down East Charters. One trip to Monica’s Chocolates resulted in a second stop because we loved the dark chocolate/blueberry candy. The Helm is about a 15/20 minutes from Lubec but worth the drive to enjoy this very special place.

My husband and two boys (7 and 13) had an incredible time. Very well equipped home with all the necessities one would need! Very clean and is obvious owners pay a lot of attention to the detail. The location is remote and incredibly scenic, which is exactly what we needed. The sunsets were beyond breathtaking! We had the opportunity to be greeted twice daily by two seals. We even saw a family of porcupine, which is a treat in itself when you're from the city. Diane was extremely responsive from the moment we booked The Helm. Her property manager was AMAZING. We ended up arriving in the area when it was pitch black and low on gas. She was extremely helpful in trying to help us! (NOTE: GPS goes dead and the house can be difficult to locate if there is no sunshine. Print out directions and have gas in the tank before entering the area in the p.m.) During the day, we sought adventure but wound down at night by sitting near the water, playing cards, ping pong, and foosball. We went into the small town of Lubec, crossed over into Canada to visit and walked through Roosevelt’s home (beautiful with history that even my boys found interesting). East Quoddy Lighthouse is awesome (but must not be fearful of ladders). Monica’s Chocolates has wonderful customer service and yummy! Definitely pricey but the owner takes much pride in her shop and ensures top-notch service. The Inn On The Wharf was a decent restaurant for us picky eaters. The wait staff was very attentive and the meal was extremely reasonable. I would go again if in the area. All the little shops are a must but Eastport Breakwater Gallery is a must. The owner and his wife have such amazing talent and he is a wonderful man. Loved his work and you can find items that are reasonably priced. Baxter State Park is a tad of a haul but a definite must! $14 for the day and was able to view the sites of a moose. Polar Treat near Perry, Maine has the best ice cream ever! West Quoddy Head Light is a great walk and beautiful shoreline. Kids loved it! The ONLY “improvements”, which would not affect my five-star rating: The loft has four air mattresses (not beds). Also, I would not allow my children to stargaze in their upstairs viewing area only because it can lead to a fall if one is not careful. However, boys listened and were able to see AMAZING stars just be sitting on their deck!
Would highly recommend!

If u haven't been to Maine before , this is the way to go. Lubec is a scenic little town where u can kayak, hike, bike, eat fresh lobster, and see your share of lighthouses and eagles. As for the house, has all the amenities u need and then some. Beautiful, clean, private, spacious, and wow what a View from the deck. Keep your eyes open for seals. We had a great week.

Simply the Best!!!
We stayed at the Helm for 2 weeks and that was not long enough! The secluded, peaceful location was exactly what we were looking for, and the house was beyond our expectations. It is huge and very well equipped for our stay. Everything was spotless and smelled fresh and wonderful. The bathrooms and laundry facilities were very spacious and clean. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare nice meals and boil up some lobsters, which we did!!
Our favorite thing was the waterfront! We ate meals out on the balcony and watched the beautiful sunsets every night - must have taken a hundred pictures. We saw a bald eagle one day and seals swimming around almost every day. We had an equal number of days that we either took little excursions and hiked or stayed at the house and read books, painted, played ping pong, foosball, board games, card games, horseshoes, or sometimes just took a nap. Absolutely perfect!
Diane and Chris were great to work with and very responsive to any questions we had. We would definitely stay here again.

AWESOME!
The Helm is in a completely private and absolutely beautiful location!
This luxury wood home is sparkling clean, very spacious and well appointed. During the day, it's windows (and windows are everywhere!) offer breathtaking views of the ocean, woodlands and wildlife. At night, the pitch black sky is highlighted with the brightest stars we've ever seen.
This is an extraordinary vacation spot! We thank the kind owners, Diane and Chris, for sharing their special place with us!

Lovely quiet seclusion -- ditto other reviewers
We spent a week at The Helm and enjoyed every peaceful minute. Such great space....we were able to host with ease my daughter and her friends (all Lubec locals) to several fun dinners.... and managed to cook 4 Maine blueberry pies in the process...priceless!

Peaceful, Secluded and Picturesque
“The Helm” provided the perfect home base for our family vacation. The post and beam home itself is beautiful with lovely décor and furnishings and thoughtful amenities. The serene setting couldn’t be more perfect, so secluded and right on the water with amazing views from early sunrise through the starry night. It’s true about the scent of the air being so good you want to bottle it! We spent mornings drinking coffee on the swing by the water watching for wildlife and then collecting mussels and periwinkles for dinner. We saw otters on two occasions, cormorants, and one morning a huge bald eagle just hanging out on the dock. Evenings, we enjoyed drinks on the deck, cooked our morning's "catch" along with lobster picked up from HD & Son’s Seafood, and had fires outside under the stars. We thoroughly enjoyed relaxing at the house, listening to music, playing games or watching movies.
Beyond the house, the tiny picturesque town of Lubec is delightful. We visited Quoddy Lighthouse and took the coastal walk along Maine’s rocky cliff coast. We combed Lubec Beach for sea glass. Campobello Island has tons to do- you’ll find the Visitors’ Center provides great information. At low tide we walked across to Head Harbour Lighthouse which looks out over the Bay of Fundy and is noted as “the most photographed lighthouse in the world.” We drove the “Quoddy Loop,” a lovely day’s adventure from Campobello to Deer Island via car ferry to watch “Old Sow,” the whirlpool which develops before high tide and brings with it an exquisite display of birds, seals and porpoises who seem to celebrate the turbulent water. From there another car ferry takes you to New Brunswick mainland for a short drive to the charming seaside town of Saint Andrews, then back to Lubec via the mainland. In Roosevelt Campobello Int'l Park we toured the historic FDR summer cottages and enjoyed tea and an outstanding presentation on Eleanor Roosevelt. There are many scenic areas with incredible views and the peat bog walk where we learned about the bog and saw moose tracks- as close as we got to the real thing! Also from Campobello we took Island Cruises’ whale watching trip - just 6 of us and our guide, Capt. Mackie. We saw minke whales, porpoises, lots of harbor and grey seals and a bald eagle nest with two young eaglets.
Many thanks to Diane who was such a responsive and helpful host. We loved our stay at The Helm and our adventures in the area and would happily return and recommend it to others!

Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!
The Helm” is a spacious, hand hewn timber home with a fantastic view in a secluded forested area. Great amenities: kitchen, bathrooms and laundry are spacious, very modern, and a nice compliment to the rest of the beautiful wood home.
Spent mornings sipping coffee and discussing daily plans while watching the tide come in or go out. Saw seals, eagles and deer. Some days the plan was just to sit, relax and talk. Other days we went on day trips to Campobello, EastPort, reversing Falls, Quoddy light house, and Acadia national Park,Bar Harbor (two hours one way but worth it!). One day we visited the Lubec historical society (limited days and hours) and had a wonderful time talking to the friendly and knowledgeable docents. We signed up for a whale watching excursion and saw a herd of seals basking on an island in the bay and then saw/followed minke whales. The boat operator was a font of knowledge about the area and he gave us an exciting trip through “Sows’ maelstrom.
Loved the house! Loved the area! Would love to stay here again!

Heaven on Earth
If you are looking for a little slice of heaven on earth, look no further. “The Helm” is a spacious, hand hewn timber home overlooking South Bay, surrounded by nothing but forests and nature. The air smells so good you want to bottle it up and bring it home with you. The modern kitchen, bathrooms and laundry are very modern, and a nice compliment to the rest of the beautiful wood home.
The mornings are peaceful on the bay with birds singing and bald eagles flying overhead. During the day the “older folks” enjoyed staying on the deck overlooking the bay and watching the tide rise and fall. They spotted loons, eagles, seals, warblers, and even heard coyotes at night. The rest of us kept busy by exploring the town of Lubec (Monica’s chocolates is a must), West Quoddy lighthouse, Lubec beach (Lubec was named third best “little beach town” by US magazine), Campobello Island (Canada) to tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt summer home, birdwatching at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, and sightseeing at nearby Calais and St. Croix. In the evenings we went kayaking at sunset with seals popping up right near the boats and enjoyed family dinners in the dining room with a view of the water.
Everyone on our trip absolutely loved the house and would love to stay here again. If you are looking to “get away from it all” you won’t be disappointed at The Helm.

Peaceful & Picturesque!
Nestled in the “Down East” section of Maine, this gem of a find offers the “Best” in what this beautiful state has to offer. As a guest of “The Helm’ you will experience the great pride and love that the owners, Chris and Diane, have put into their home and wish to share with others. This spacious “Maine Cabin” vacation home offers something for everyone both young (they will love sleeping in the loft) and old. From fine local dining in the picturesque town of Lubec, to visiting Campobello Island and exploring the local parks and beaches especially “Reversing Falls” where you can witness the shifting tides, activities and sites abound. If you prefer the solitude of a private retreat, a gaze at the panoramic view of South Bay with its wildlife will truly make you feel one with nature.
We look forward to future trips to “The Helm” and again thank Chris and Diane for allowing us to experience their beautiful home.

The way Vacation should be......
As you drive down the pleasant dirt lane and you glimpse the dramatic coastline and tide, you just know this place is going to be great! Arriving at the "cottage", you instantly feel a sense of awe, at the house and at the view! The house is spacious and comfortable, the deck overlooking the bay being the best place to sit a spell and watch the tide, the seals, the loons, the kingfishers and yes, a bald eagle in a tree nearby! Coffee in the morning should always be like this! The view from the bed in the morning is just as breathtaking! Of course I went to Campobello, the lighthouses, Monica's Chocolates, Cobscook Bay State Park and Reversing Falls. My stay just wasn't long enough.
I highly recommend this rental for it's peaceful and spectacular location, and for the comfort and amenities it offers. The place is huge! The owners were great and I thank them for sharing their beautiful home.
