About this house rental
This historic home in the center of Bass Harbor village on Mount Desert Island has a front house, Harbor View Cottage, and a back house, Bass Harbor Hideaway (this listing), both of which are available for summer rentals.
Bass Harbor Hideaway is clean, sunlit and comfortable, and is across the street and up the hill from Bass Harbor, a scenic marina filled with lobster boats. The home is quiet and rustic, with somewhat dated decor (see photos), offering a country outpost from which to enjoy all that Mt. Desert Island and Acadia have to offer.
The rental features:
• Two-story gabled duplex, sleeps four upstairs in twin beds, plus two on a pull-out couch.
• Living room, eat-in kitchen (full-sized appliances).
• Two bedrooms on 2nd floor with two twin beds in each (linens and towels included), plus two full baths.
• Small deck with a distant view of Bass Harbor, which is about 300 feet away.
• Washer/dryer and charcoal grill are provided.
• Large front and side yards provide plenty of room for children to play and explore.
• 1 mile from Bass Harbor Head Light.
• 12-minute drive to Acadia National Park.
• 10-minute drive to shops & restaurants of Southwest Harbor.
• Minutes to Echo Lake, hiking trails, swimming, boating, golf, tennis & fishing.
• Free island shuttle to Bar Harbor and other points of interest. Shuttle stops every hour. Visit http://www.exploreacadia.com/route7.htm for the schedule.
• High-speed broadband WIFI at speeds of 300 Mbps downloads / 10 Mbps uploads (typically fast enough to stream). Performance may vary based on the number of devices being used. We also offer basic+ cable TV.
• Note: AT&T cell phone service works well in Bass Harbor, but Verizon and T-Mobile offer only spotty service. If you have Verizon or T-Mobile, you may want to make park and other reservations ahead of time.
***A Note on Cleaning: We follow our routine cleaning between tenants with EPA-registered disinfectants to kill germs on commonly used surfaces such as kitchen counters, appliances, doorknobs, cabinet knobs, light switches, faucets, toilet handles and television remote controls.***

It was a very clean and lovely house with plenty of space and a great view! If I were coming back to this area again, I would absolutely stay here again. Very friendly and well-prepared hosts who had a plethora of things you could do on the island written out for you

The house was in a great location - close to Southwest Harbor, Seawall, all things Acadia National Park. The house has a well equipped kitchen, very comfortable beds and comfortable living room. However, it could use some tender loving care. Kitchen and baths are very “ vintage”. And we were blessed with cool nights so we did not need to use the fans in the home. They are all in need of a good cleaning. Would have liked a new sponge in the kitchen and travel sizes of shampoo and conditioner instead of large sizes. It’s a great little spot. The quiet side of the island for sure. Lots of deer in the yard at dusk.

Quiet place in bass harbor. Close to a restaurant and Acadia park around 25 minutes away. Very spacious with lots of amenities.

This lovely spot in Bass Harbor was perfect! It was not only a beautiful home, but so convenient to the lighthouse and the Ships Harbor hike, and the Island Explorer bus to Bar Harbor/Acadia. We made the mistake of driving into Bar Harbor for a "quick lunch" and quickly discovered that parking was impossible. After we took advantage of the free bus, all of our trips to Bar Harbor (for a whale watch) and Acadia (for a hike at Bee Hive), we had no issues. Plus, the Ketch across the street was delicious!

First - MAKE SURE you put in the correct address! There is more than one Shore Rd on Mt Desert Island and we accidentally went to the wrong home - awkward!
The Bass Harbor location worked well for us and the home’s beds worked. We had two kids in one room, and a kid + adult in the second room. My husband slept on the sleeper sofa and the baby was in his pack n play. We have a larger family so we adapted!
We appreciated that the owners gave us some directions on their favorite things to see. Acadia was great! Wear bug spray.

This place was perfect for our two nights stay near Acadia. It’s about a 35 minute drive during the busiest week of the year. Our favorite restaurant was Thurston’s lobster pound across the harbor. And we really enjoyed a nature cruise around the corner with bassharborcruises.com

Our family absolutely loved our visit at this home! We loved how quiet the little harbor area was, despite how busy the island was for the 4th of July holiday, and the quaint old home gave great authentic Maine vibes. Host information was helpful, and they were attentive when we needed to contact them.

Had a 1 night stay with our family. Enjoyed the rustic feel of this. Good price and great location. Easy walk to Seafood Ketch restaurant.

Just a nice place to stay, no real issues other than the thermostats were difficult to figure out, the kitchen roof leaks a little water when you shower upstairs, and the fridge shakes the house when the compressor turns off. Home owner was kind enough to mail me my souvenirs I souvenirs left, and everything was neat and tidy.

College buddies and wives had a great stay on Mt. Desert Island. We liked the slower pace of this side of the island but was an easy and beautiful drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia NP. House is a good representation of homes in the area, nothing fancy but functional.

It was comfortable and the area was just perfect! Super close to the light house and the Seawall picnic area where we went to stargaze. We watched the sunset 2 mins away from the house as well. Honestly perfect for what we needed!

Enjoyed our stay very much. We, however, wish the heater/furnace had been on. Also, need to make the television instructions more clear. Only mention streaming, and state there is no cable in your instructions.

Great location, across the Harbor and a short drive to busy Bar Harbor. This is a n older traditional historic Maine home, very comfortable and cozy. Very peaceful. The owners provided everything you need, even a washer and dryer. My family and I really appreciated the activity and restaurant guides the owners provided. We followed their recommendations and it made our experience even better.

We stayed three nights at this home. It was clean and check in process very easy. All bedrooms are upstairs. Beds and pillows were comfortable. It is approximately 30 min drive to Bar Harbor. We also enjoyed dining in the restaurants closer to Bass Harbor.

We enjoyed being on the quiet side of Acadia National Park! Our grandson enjoyed the outside property! Although the inside was a bit dated, we really enjoyed the 2 bathrooms and having 2 floors! It was warm and cozy! We especially appreciated all the extras - all the amenities were there and then some!!

Our stay in Bass Harbor was fantastic and Bobbie's place served as an excellent home base for the long weekend. It's described as a nice place that's maybe a little dated, but honestly we found it far more charming than some boring new condo and were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. We loved the weird, old, but very functional kitchen! It really reminded me of visiting my grandmother's house when I was little with simple furnishings, but everything is still very functional and comfortable. It's an old house on a quiet side of the island so even for a weekend in August we never saw a bit of traffic and nothing was ever longer than 30 minutes away. We were a party of four and we never felt crowded. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good home base for Acadia and anything else on MDI.

Loved this getaway on the quiet side of MDI. Plenty of room for our family aside and the perfect escape. An easy drive to anywhere on the island with everything we needed, from groceries to dining to shopping, was within 5 minutes! We’ll definitely be back!!

This was a clean and modest lodging located very near parts of Acadia National Park and about 30 minutes away from the main park. It was reasonably priced compared to other lodging options in the area. The house is older but for the most part is well maintained and clean.
So why four stars instead of five? A few reasons:
1) The pullout mattress is very uncomfortable. My wife and I woke up every morning with aches. As advertised, this is the only bed in the house where you can sleep with a partner.
2) The pullout couch/bed is located in the living room where there are no curtains to block out the rising sun from coming in the sliders located on the room's east side. The sun rises as early as 5am in Acadia in the summer!
3) The washing machine had a broken valve while we were there (June 2023). There was a sign that said the owner was aware of this problem, but people should be warned that until this issue is fixed, it took us a looong time to do a load of laundry. The same sign expressing awareness of the broken valve also asked users to turn off the valve for the washing machine when it wasn't in use, so we felt guilty putting a load of laundry in before leaving for our activities today. My wife ended up having to set an alarm to wake up in the night to turn the valve off and put the clothes in the dryer (again, because the washing machine took hours to finish a cycle due to the broken valve).
Minor issues, but worthy enough to be mentioned.

This place is exactly how it’s described. Nothing fancy, but clean and exactly what we needed for a few days visiting Bar Harbor and Acadia. It’s just a short drive to everything. And there is a great restaurant across the water called Thurstons that I highly recommend for your lobster fix! The house is situated on a quiet road and we enjoyed the space.

We had an amazing time here!! It was very clean and was exactly as described!

Although somewhat dated as specified in the listing, the house was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We would stay here again.

The only problem with the place is that it had a smell to it. I think it was the carpet because upstairs didn’t smell. Parking was a tight squeeze also since it’s a duplex and two cars were already there. Other than that we had a fabulous time and we enjoyed our stay.

My husband and our two adult children enjoyed the excellent location and comfort of this house. The only recommendation that I would have is to supply a Keurig type coffee pot and to make it clear that there is no AC. Everything else was great!

We love coming to Acadia, and this house was a gem. Check in and check out process was seamless and all information was provided well ahead of time, which is always appreciated. The property is so nice. It is the posterior aspect of a two family house and my family of four had ample room to spread out. The kitchen is equipped with everything that you need, and I always appreciate considerate host touches like having saran wrap, basic spices, etc. in case I forget things. We had a view of the harbor, which was lovely. So nice to have outdoor space as well. Our first night we walked to the restaurant across the street and had a great meal!
FYI there is a designated patio space for each unit, though they are situated quite close to each other. (The other renters sat outside and smoked continuously throughout the day which was not pleasant for us, so we did not use ours very much unfortunately). But otherwise we loved the outdoor space as well as the garage to store our bikes.
In summary I would rent this house again in a heartbeat! We hope to be back in a year or two.

Spacious and great location!
We had a great 3-night stay in Bass Harbor, a great location for visiting the “quiet side” of Acadia (although we did it all including Schoodic). The house was very spacious and we appreciated the washer and dryer and fully equipped kitchen! We ate at the seafood ketch across the street twice and.had great meals, also went to Thurstons for lobster, but be warned there are only minimal options for non lobster eaters (check out the menu in advance!). Don’t miss The Bass Harbor lighthouse at sunset. Bobbi was a great communicator and we found everything to be exactly as described. Do note that the largest bathroom is downstairs and the 2 bedrooms are upstairs with a small bath. This was the perfect place for three of us on our first trip to Acadia! We would def stay here again.

Walk on the quiet side
We very much enjoyed our stay on the quiet side of the island! The house came equipped with everything we needed. The hiking guide was super useful, so thanks for that! Plus, the binder with restaurant recommendations and suggestions for age appropriate activities was a bonus. The owners seem to have thought of everything!

Comfortable lodging
Enjoyed our stay. The hostess was helpful, communicated very well with clear instructions. The house had a lovely view in the front, however, we were in the back unit which has no views but we didn’t realize it till we arrived. If you’re spending considerable time in Bar Harbor, be aware that it is about 35 minutes each way.

Quietside is the perfect side
We recently stayed at the Bass Harbor Hideaway house to enjoy Acadia National Park. There are plenty of hikes within a 10 minute drive including a beach (Echo Lake). The iconic Bass Harbor Lighthouse is only a 20 minute walk! It'll take you about 30 minutes to get to Cadillac Mountain and Bar Harbor, but that is only because you have to drive slowly through some beautiful harbor towns. We enjoyed this location and if we come back to Mount Desert Island in the future, we would definitely stay again.

Acadia family vacation
This place was a great home to spend our week in. The kitchen has plenty of table ware and cooking gadgets. The stove left a bit to be desired but it worked ok.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the home was comfortable and I’d definitely rent again if we return.
