A large stylish house overlooking the sea : Built in 1912 by a French sea captain for his lady, Carn Du House easily sleeps 12. The main rooms have panoramic views of the sea sweeping from the Lizard through the bay of St. Michael's Mount to the dramatic coastline which stretches west towards Lamorna and Land’s End. The large family kitchen with an Aga (with an additional electric Rangemaster in utility room) looks through to a spacious dining room which is open through big glass doors into a living room with a log fire and a sun room, all opening one into another creating a relaxing sense of light and space. There is a piano in the dining room.
On the first floor a light airy landing, leads to five bedrooms, three with en-suite bathrooms and an additional family bathroom. The two main bedrooms with their luxurious emperor sized beds (which can be twins), open on to a balcony high above the sea, one with a large Victorian enamelled bath beneath the bay window.
The house has a self contained attached annex with a separate entrance, which can be rented, also with a sea view, which has a kitchen, shower room and bedsitting room.
THERE IS ALSO A COTTAGE AVAILABLE TO RENT WITH THE HOUSE OR ON ITS OWN - it is both listed here with the house and as a separate listing.
The Cottage has equally magnificent panoramic views sweeping across the whole of Mounts Bay. The cottage which sleeps 4 can be rented with the main house or separately. It has a large open-plan sitting room/dining room/kitchen, with a wood-burning stove and free Wifi throughout. Upstairs there is a bathroom and two double bedrooms (one with a balcony). All rooms look over the sea.
History: Carn Du has a colourful history. In its time Mousehole has played host to, among others, Charlie Chaplin, Dylan Thomas, Charles Laughton, the artists Gwen and Augustus John and the Guggenheims. With its light and elegance, Carn Du is a house of rare charm in one of the most beautiful parts of old Cornwall, the Penwith peninsula. Look out across the bay to St Michael’s Mount where in 1047, Edward the Confessor established a chapel now a fortress like house lived in by the St. Aubyn family, perched high on an island in Mount’s Bay, reached at low tide by a stone causeway. The coastline is gentle here, but becomes more rugged as you move west towards Lamorna Cove and Land’s End. With its abundance of prehistoric stone monuments, this peninsula was the last part of Britain to be taken over by the Anglo Saxons from the Celts. DH Lawrence said of it: “This Cornwall is very primaeval: great, black, jutting cliffs and rocks, like the original darkness, with a pale sea breaking in, like dawn…”
Beaches and Walks: It is also full of beautiful beaches. The beaches at Porthcurno and Porthchapel are 15 minutes by car from Carn Du, and beyond that is the lovely 3 star beach of Sennen. Just beyond Land’s End, offers some of Cornwall’s best surfing. Fly to the sunny Scillies by helicopter for the day or catch the ferry.
This house is perfect for a group for a special celebration, anniversary, birthday, or just a relaxed family holiday by the sea. Only a 4 min walk down the hill, Mousehole harbour is picturesque, tidal and clean, with a sandy beach ideal for small children to potter, with icecream and café closeby. There are walks behind the house through old Cornish fields to Paul and to the village, and the endless variety of the coastal path which can be as long or short as you like. Walk to Lamorna and stop for delicious lunch of fresh crab and more at the Café, stop for a pint at the Lamorna Wink, or the Logan Rock at Treen, where the colour of the sea and the beach rival the Mediterranean.
The house and cottage are available off season for a minimum of 3 nights at owners discretion at a minimum of £1,900 and £650 respectively.

Views are incredible
We loved our stay here- simply breathtaking. The views are incredible and from every angle in the house. We were a big group and the house is very spacious and everything you can think of is provided. Would definitely recommend!

Excellent house, beautiful views, had use of annexe too which we were very grateful for, although damp which our clothes and dry goods noticed when staying for a week. Other bedrooms were glorious with light and airy spaces front two have excellent views. House is well equipped to cook for large parties and dishwasher/washing machine very useful. Grand house, photos didn’t do justice to how fabulous it is. We were greeted with fresh flowers which was a lovely touch, some areas a little tired such as sofas and garden furniture however made up with charm.
Lots of creepy crawlies which is likely to be unavoidable in the area and not through lack of through cleaning by Phay and her team.
The pool was indeed warm and we all enjoyed it, the gardens are lovely and rich with plants, some grown to such a size that it unfortunately obstructs the view in places.
There was ample space on the drive for our 4 cars and the garden can be made secure which was a blessing due to our two inquisitive dogs.
The hill to Mousehole is very steep and not to be under estimated, some of our party were unable to walk there however it’s a short car journey if necessary, the rest of us enjoyed the challenge - ish!
Would love to stay again

Amelia, made sure to provide a friendly welcome to Cornwall with a well appointed cottage masterfully designed to take full advantage of the spectacular sea views stretching away to St. Michael's Mount in the distance. Everything was thought of right down to a welcoming bottle of wine and Cornish scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, to make sure that we were immediately immersed in the easy and relaxing Cornish countryside. A thoroughly enjoyable stay made even better by the glorious weather.

A fabulous house for a family gathering!
With the Cottage and Annexe this makes the perfect venue for a family to get together for Christmas, with so much space. Adults and children all had a fabulous time. An easy stroll down to Mousehole for the evening lights and daytime coffee, and easy to get out on to the main road over for walks along the coast. Beds are all supper comfy, and everyone had a bath overlooking the sea! This was our second Christmas here, and now we want to come for a week in the summer!
