Such a lovely stay here. The room was perfect - we were a couple on 2 bunk beds but there were curtains which segregated each set of bunks with a floor space so it was very private.
The dinner and breakfast were excellent and definitely worth booking in advance.
We walked from here to Tsumago along the Nakesendo Way and it was the perfect place to stay!
Staff were so lovely and super helpful.

The place is nice & beautiful, spacious and food is delicious. Good money for your value. I don't see a better place to stay in Magome.
My only issue is the bed: pillow was way too high (I don't care about the cherry pits, I am used to it) bit it was just too high. And the mattress was too thin so I slept really bad and woke up a few times with back in my lower side of the back. But it's OK for a night and in any case it's the best place to stay in Magome.
4.3
Perfect place to stay if you're going through Magome. Sensational dinner and breakfast, definitely opt for this as there's not many other options if any really. Lovely helpful staff. Gorgeous town.

The bunk beds are superb – each bed has not only individual curtain but also 4 curtains on the sides, forming a room with lots of space for 2 people to put their stuff and seat on futons they provide. It was very quiet and clean, traditional Japanese clothing was provided to launge and walk around in, evrything was pristine clean.
Only issue is the lack of food options. The hotel/hostel offers an expensive diner and breakfast that comes without coffee or tea. Most restaurants around close at 4pm and don't open til 9–10am. I wish Magome Chya had at least snacks in a vending machine and brewed coffee for breakfast. Also if you are vegetarian you are in bad luck.

It was located very centrally along Magome-juku and we had a very spacious ryokan for 2 people. The facilities were great and everything was clean and tidy. It was the summer season so overall it was quite quiet, but I loved it. Breakfast and dinner were very generous portions and with a variety of different vegetables/meats :) will definitely go back again!
I didn’t know it was a shared shower (ie public bath) but I might have missed the information somewhere - all good though!

Super emplacement, le personnel était très accueillant et arrangeant, le repas du soir et le petit déjeuner étaient très bons... Tout ça pour un prix vraiment abordable !
Je le recommande ! (Et y retournerais avec joie)

The meals were excellent and the staff was super nice, and the location was amazing.
Did not know that the showers were not personal. Toilet stall in men’s bathroom was way too small to get anything done I kept hitting my head with the door knob.

A charming Japanese minshuku. English speaking staff. Clean and comfortable. Japanese dinner and breakfasts were exceptional and worth ordering. Even though it was shared bathroom there were plenty of toilets basin facilities. Location in the town was central and Magome itself is a delightful town with amazing scenery. There is a kitchen for use by guests. There is nothing open in the town after 5:30pm but the minshuku sells drinks on an honour based system.
Shower room was open and bath was really only suitable for one person. Quite a number of women staying there and showering was one at a time.
The staircase up to the second level was a very steep incline and narrow. If you have an issue with that, I would request a bottom floor room.

Schönes traditionelles Gästehaus mit sehr nettem Service und super Essen

The set meal was good in the evening and the breakfast was great.
Has the feel of a purpose built ryokan rather than an authentic one, has more of a hostel vibe. We had just come from a beautiful ryokan in the neighbouring town of Tsumago which was very genuine so that probably didn't help with our expectations for this one! There was also an issue with the heating during our stay, it turned itself off regularly and the room was very cold.
4.3
Centrally located within Magome, which anyway is a small town. There’s a restaurant across from the guest house with a cosy atmosphere.
Nothing much to dislike. Maybe the room is a bit of a squeeze. Given that it’s a historical building, one would expect limitations to the extent that modern facilities can be installed within the building.

The property is in the perfect location. The room we got was spacious and had a bit of a view. The food is delicious and the staff is very kind.
The facilities could have been a bit better, admittedly, and we’ve noticed some of the rooms were significantly smaller.
4.3
Food is amazing
4.3
The food was really the winner of this stay - the best traditional Japanese food we’ve had on our trip. Also the location was perfect and everything was very neat and clean. It definitely exceeded my expectations being a 1-star hotel/ryokan.
Only thing was that our room faced the small street which meant that street lamps lit up the room quite a bit. Also, the splashing sound coming from the small water mill was a bit loud - it will be a comforting sound to some however.

Emplacement . Qualité de la nourriture japonaise traditionnelle.
Voisinage entre chambres bruyant. Insister sur la discrétion passé 9 heures PM .

beautiful place to stay!

Great location, excellent food, wonderful staff.
Simple room with communal facilities - I can't complain, that was clear when I booked; but that made it thematically appropriate for staying at a traditional post town.
4.3
The breakfast and dinner made by Jeng and the staff were the best Japanese food experience we had so far.
we liked all!
4.3
It is pretty basic actually, you get a tatami room and you have to lay your own bed. Service was friendly and efficient.
With regards to pricing, i think it is pretty standard of the area, simply because there’s very little accommodation around.
Dinner and breakfast were really good though.
Basic space, shared showers in the format of a public bathhouse.

What a wonderful stay!!
First of all the owners are the nicest people, they give a warm welcome and have great tips for activities in the area. (They speak English very well!)
If you are looking for the traditional ryokan experience, this is the place to go.
In the middle of the beautiful Main Street of Magome the family owned guest house is located.
We slept on futons and had a delicious and varied breakfast and dinner, provided by the great hosts!!
The shared bathrooms and toilets are clean and the shared living room is very cosy. There is a guitar and one of the guest even played nice background music.
We definitely recommend this place!
Nothing!!

The dinner and breakfast were delicious and varied. Friendly hosts!

Magome Chaya is very well located in the middle of Magome-juku, just a few steps from the Tourist Information Centre. Bothe breakfast and dinner were very substantial and tasty - exceeded our expectations.
We knew that we would be using a communal bathroom, but had thought that there'll be separate shower stalls, much like in college dorms. It's not the guesthouse's fault. It's just us not used to having a shower with strangers around.
4.3
Beautiful and well maintained.
4.3
it is traditional Japanese hostel.
it’s clean and tidy. Breakfast is nice.
it’s located at the middle of old town but it’s on the uphill. So it’s not convenient if you travel with big luggages.
4.3
The place is essentially a ryokan in the lovely village of Magome. We came for one night to do some hiking and loved the facilities. They even have a onsen (even if it was too hot for me to use) on site.
4.3
A beautiful area. The accommodation was very traditional. The meals were amazing and the staff were wonderful with excellent English speaking skills.
4.3
Convenient location to walk the Nakasendo Trail from Magome to Tsumago. Breakfast and dinner were delicious with lots of variety. Jeng our host was so friendly and went out of her way to help us. Also very good value.
Walking the Nakasendo Trail was one of the highlights of our trip.
4.3
Great hospitality in a fascinating setting. Beautifully presented, delicious meals and English-speaking staff were very helpful, even while experiencing the feudal charm of Magome.

very clean and the host was so friendly and helpful, she went out of her way to accommodate us. the food was the nicest we have had since in Japan also. we would come here again for sure!

The food was very tasty but the servings were too large. We would have been satisfied with half he amount that was served,
