Beautiful hotel with excellent service. All staff I encountered were really helpful, professional and kind. The spa and treatment was excellent, and the Venus bar is wonderful.
The hot water in my room was restricted in temperature, apparently for my own safety. It meant I could not have a bath as it was only touch warm, and therefore once run the bath was not warm enough to enjoy. It was only just warm enough to shower in (much like a a swimming pool shower). I asked three days in a row if they could do anything about it, and whilst the staff were understanding and apologetic nothing could be done to change it. After busy, active days I craved a hot bath and found this really disappointing.
The Palmaria restaurant food was a little disappointing. The service, decor and position was excellent, but the food was not great. It felt that maybe the usual chef was absent. At breakfast time the poached eggs were served cold and tasted a bit weird, served on cold toast, and the one evening meal I had there was quite disappointing. The Veal Carpaccio was cooked meat and more like a ploughman's, the pasta course was OK but quite bland, and the tirimassu was terrible (you needed a knife and fork to eat it it was all so tough).
Overall I loved my stay in this lovely hotel, where the staff are their greatest asset, just let down by these two points above.

The size of the room, the view and the bar/restaurant was lovely. The staff was GREAT and very helpful. From helping us with parking & luggage to the bar staff remember what wine I had on the terrace and getting it for me at dinner!
The cost of the room compared to other 3 stays in the area was very high with comparable views & amenities.

Great location, lovely part of Italy
clean, friendly, helpful staff, good sized rooms

This is going to be the first time that I write a long review. I usually only gives scores. I traveled to most of the continents and I usually use Booking. This hotel is nice because of the location and the fact that has some history.
The room that I got assigned was very very disappointing and did not represent the pictures on the web. I bought the second most expensive room in the hotel for 3 nights to surprise my husband for our anniversary. My goal was to have a room with an ocean view and a balcony. I do not care about large rooms, big beds, living rooms etc. I was assigned a room - 505- on the last floor with 15% of ocean view if I stood up...and the rest was absolutely claustrophobic. And during the evening and night there was a smell of fried food - likely coming from the chimney below. The ladies at the front desk were extremely nice and changed our room for the following 2 nights with a great view of the sea. One more thing, the director of the hotel - Antonio something- is rude, disrespectful to the employees and makes the guests - like myself that speak Italian- very uncomfortable. And my last last disappointng experience was when my sister that came to visit me from another town could not use my bathroom without providing an ID even though she was accompanied by me. And do not use COVID as an excuse, I never been in a similar situation anywhere in any other 5 stars hotel or any hotel for that matter.

I am a frequent traveler and I usually reside in 3-5 stars' hotels in different parts of the world. By far, Grand Hotel Portovenere gave me the best hotel experience that I ever had throughout more than 25 years of frequent travelling! The staff are our of this world with loads of care and support ! Ariana and Chiara in the reception were exceptional in the kind of support and genuine care that they offered allover our stay :)
Anna S. in the restaurant was very careful to make us feel at home in every single meal! Everything about this hotel is exceptional; safety, cleanliness, location, breakfast, very delicious and typically Ligurian dinner, …, etc.
I never rated a hotel with 10 (even very luxurious ones) - Yet, I would openly and gladly rate Grand Hotel Portovenere with a 10+
Nothing! Everything was more than perfect !

location and reception.
Extremely over priced, and not at all what one would expect from a 5 star hotel. Service, although well meaning and polite, was slow and ineffective. The receptionist were helpful however. The breakfast was that of a 3 star hotel, terrible coffee, which for Italy is hard to imagine.
