About this house rental
WELCOME!
The Mansfield House is a lovely and spacious mountain home located on the western slope of Mt. Mansfield and near Smugglers Notch/Madonna Mt., Bolton Valley, and Cochran ski areas (20 minute drive to each). A vacation here is filled with a wide range of seasonal activities for the active and the relaxed.
INTERESTED IN SKIING STOWE?
While we are very close to Stowe Mountain Resort as the crow flies, we're actually on the *other side* of Mount Mansfield. In the summer, driving to Stowe takes 30 min via 108 to the north. In the winter, you have to go south to I-89 which takes 60 min. From our house, the closest downhill skiing option is Smugglers Notch Resort, which is 20 min away. If you're just interested in the town of Stowe, it's a 45-minute drive whether you go north or south.
SURROUNDINGS
Our 100-acre property is mostly wooded and borders Underhill State Park to the east. The two main trailheads for Mt. Mansfield are just a 5 minute drive from the house. Feel free to explore the property but keep in mind that there are two other homes in the vicinity with full-time residents: a cottage across the large driveway from the main house (inhabited by the property owners) and our neighbors' house just up the hill from our pond.
COVID POLICIES
We are not currently hosting any weddings or parties. Sanitized linens will be provided. The property is now unavailable for 48 hours between reservations.
BEDROOM HIGHLIGHTS
There are two sleeping areas at opposite ends of the house. Two bedrooms (queen and king beds) are at the northern end of the house, with a shared bathroom featuring a field stone wall, tile, and walk-in shower. The southern end of the house features a bunkroom and 2 queen bedrooms, one with a twin trundle bed. There is a shared bathroom for these rooms, featuring a Vermont slate floor, vessel sink, and tub/shower. Also at this end of the house is the Master bedroom with king Tempur-pedic bed and a large en suite bathroom with walk-in shower and sweeping view of Mount Mansfield. All the bedrooms have been recently renovated and each has lovely linens and quilts.
INTERIOR HIGHLIGHTS
The interior features cathedral ceilings, a large living room with field stone fireplace, and a field stone wall in the dining area, as well as wide oak and brick floors. Lovely views delight visitors from every window.
An open kitchen/dining area is at the center of the house. The 12-person birdseye maple dining room table has a sweeping view of Mt. Mansfield. This open area is wonderful for group cooking and socializing while enjoying the colors of a magnificent sunset.
There is a den off the kitchen with a second fireplace, sofa bed, and a second TV - nice for movies, cozy chats, or quiet reading. This space is also wonderful for children's movies, board games, or a quick escape from the bustle of the household.
We also take great pride in a very clean house - all the rooms are cleaned professionally using only all natural products.
OUTDOOR HIGHLIGHTS
The outdoor hot tub is available for soaking, while gazing up at Mt. Mansfield, or the stars.
The pond is stocked with trout yearly and is great for fly-fishing and swimming.
The one acre pond, great for swimming and floating (bring your own please), sandy beach, beautifully landscaped lawns and gardens, and walking/XC skiing (or snowshoe) trails offer both activity and quiet, suitable for the energetic and the serene.
Looking for the country life and time with family or friends? You will love this setting.
Two very popular Vermont destinations are close: Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory is 30 minutes away, and the Shelburne Museum, a large and fascinating 'living' museum is 45 minutes away. Lake Champlain, UVM, and St. Michaels College are all within easy reach. Hunting is possible in the area but not on the property please. Space for badminton, croquet, and soccer behind house, visible from kitchen and living room. Large swimming pond in front field.

What a wonderful place for a family vacation! The large home, wonderful outdoor spaces, and view of our favorite mountain made for a memorable and comfortable stay. Betsy was available for questions. The air conditioning was key during a hot and humid week.

Beautiful remote location. House was comfortable for all of us and beautifully equipped. Grounds and views were stunning. Hosts were friendly and most helpful!

The property is beautiful and wonderfully maintained. There are incredible views, very much enhanced by the wonderfully maintained gardens. It feels quiet and peaceful, while still being close to amenities.
The kitchen is unusually well equipped for a rental property - made cooking very easy and fun.
The hosts were kind, thoughtful and accessible.

We stayed at this house with all of our children and grandchildren. the layout of the house was awesome, with bedrooms/bathrooms for parents and children on one side, and bedrooms/bathroom for childfree on the other side. There is a large kitchen/dining/living area in the middle for congregating, and a separate den that made a great play area for the children.

It was a delight to stay at Mansfield House. We loved the location, the ability to walk in the surrounding woods, and seeing the deer frisking in the field.
We were pleased with the numerous power strips which allowed us to use our Ott lights to enhance the lights at night, so important for aging eyes when knitting.
We feel the owner should be aware that we saw numerous bugs inside the house both lady bugs and what we think were carpenter ants.
We would choose Mansfield House again.

Thank you Betsy and Patricia for a wonderful 4 days at your Underhill location. Beautiful farm setting with views of Mt Mansfield. Saw many deer but no bears, unfortunately.

We had a group of 15 adults get together for a celebratory weekend and the house fit us all very comfortably. Tons of space to lounge indoors and the surrounding property was expansive and gorgeous. We enjoyed our time walking the nature trails around the property and spent time around the fire pit down by the pond. I hope to visit again!

A wonderful family time
What a wonderful stay we had!! The house is perfectly suited for a large family get together. The property is beautifully maintained and the pond/sandy beach entertained the children for hours. The property is a true gem!!

Wonderful Mountain Getaway!
This was a perfect location for a birthday hiking trip with my extended family. The property grounds and the views of Mt Mansfield are stunning! The beds, linens and towels were very comfortable and clean. The kitchen was well equipped for us to cook and have family dinners together. The hot tub was fantastic! We had 10 adults in our party which I think is the max number of adults this house can accommodate to sleep and relax comfortably. The only changes I would recommend is an anti-slip mat in the bathroom with a tub.

Relax, Relax, Relax
We had a short family vacation over Memorial Day weekend. The house was described as a good family getaway and it really was more than we could have expected. My husband and I traveled with our 4 kids and 2 significant others. The house was clean and beautiful. The views are amazing from all the picture windows in the house. The kitchen was immaculate. My husband and I love to cook and it had everything we could possibly need, even the knives were sharp. It was spectacular. The kids made use of the pond by fishing and swimming. It was the cleanest pond I have ever seen. The hiking was spectacular. There is a mile and a half trail around the property. The house is a short drive to town for provisions but the house has all you need for a relaxing getaway, including a hot tub. The owner was very attentive and responded quickly to any questions. We cannot say enough good things about this lovely house. We will be back.

Ski Weekend
We were looking for a house that was large enough for our family and some of our friends and their families. This house was perfect. The fireplace was wonderful for everyone to gather around. The kitchen was fully stocked with equipment for all of our needs. The beds were very comfortable and the house was very clean.
We were skiing at Smugglers Notch, and the house was approximately 20 minutes away on back roads around the mountain to the resort. We loved the house so much, we booked it again for next year while we were staying at the property.
The owners were great to work with. Patricia was very responsive to all of our questions.
We really loved our stay and look forward to next year when we get to go back.

Exceeded expectations
I’ve been very tempted not to review so that we could have our pick of weeks, but there are so many other excellent reviews, I figured it wouldn’t work. This was the perfect house for our multigenerational family Thanksgiving week. Easy access to the woods for hiking, a huge fireplace with plenty of firewood, well-stocked kitchen, and beautiful views of the surprise 10” snowfall. Very responsive management for the one issue (security system beeping) we had. The 9-hour (before stops) drive was absolutely worth it, and we’re hoping to come back to enjoy other seasons there.

Great Escape
My wife and I were celebrating our 20th anniversary and wanted the ability to unplug from every day life. This property delivered. From the tempurpedic bed, to the Giant fireplace and hot tub overlooking Mt. Mansfield this property was just what we needed. We were easily able to spend a day in Stowe and Burlington from the location. The property would be perfect for a family reunion or a 2 family vacation as you can separate groups with bedrooms on either side of the kitchen, dining and family room. This is a spot we would definitely return to!

Wonderful house
Set in it's own expansive grounds with fabulous views of Mt Mansfield one side and swimming lake the other, this was a very special place indeed. Well equipped, comfortable, clean and everything worked. Perfect for families or groups we cannot recommend it too highly. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We would love to come back one day.

Perfect place for a multi-generational, multi-family getaway
The layout of the house is ideal for multiple families. Our family with teenagers stayed on one end, and the grandmother and my sister's family with a toddler stayed on the other, and we could not hear each other at all. The center of the house was a perfect gathering spot for us all.
While the weather wasn't as cooperative as we would have liked, we got to enjoy some time at the pond and hanging outside on the grounds. The landscaping is beautiful. The sunsets were breathtaking. The pond is peaceful.
We've taken an annual joint vacation for the last 14 years, and this is the cleanest, most comfortable property we've stayed in.

Idyllic getaway
Perfect house for a family vacation and amazing property for swimming and exploring. Easy commutes to Stowe and Burlington for outings, but plenty of entertainment for days in as well. Communication was excellent. We hope to return every year - thanks so much!

A Piece of Heaven
Our stay at Mansfield House could not have been better. Not only were there bedrooms for everyone to have their own space, but the common areas of house allowed for wonderful together time full of card games, good meals and lots of laughter. The morning breeze from the mountain was absolutely delightful and the evenings on the front lawn made for memories that we will carry with us for many years to come.

Perfect Getaway for Kids and Adults
This property and home was absolute perfection from start to end. The house is set up PERFECTLY for both adults and kids to have fun. The living area and kitchen is in the middle and the bedrooms are set up at each end of the house. The sound basically stays in the living area and does not travel to the bedrooms which is a plus for sleeping babies. Also, the beds are super comfortable. We came ready to take advantage of the kitchen and it is well stocked from seasonings to cast iron. Betsy and Patricia graciously allowed us to bring our two dogs and heading out back and taking a walk in the woods with them every day was a dream and much needed. So peaceful and beautiful, especially with all the snow. Given the pandemic, we stayed at the house and only ventured out on the property but that was more than enough given the acreage, the trails, the fireplace, and the hot tub. The xylophones and the little playroom were a big hit with the kids too! I sincerely hope we make it back to the Mansfield house again. It was everything we needed.

Perfect place to social distance. A few trips to the store were all we needed. It was very very hot on the southern end of the house. That’s the only negative. Bring lots of fans.

Great weekend house
The Mountain house was perfect for our large group of women. We were in the area for skiing and hiking and the house was a perfect spot to come back to. It was convenient to the places we were skiing and hiking and we made use of the great trails by the house for snowshoeing and walking in the woods. The views are spectacular from the house and we were luck to be there as it was snowing. So beautiful.
The house is well equipped with everything that we needed. The host and property manager were responsive and helpful. We are already considering a return visit.

Perfect in every way!
Our stay at Mansfield House exceeded expectations. We had 5 kids ages 2-6 and the house handled us well. The furnishings were as good as we've seen with all the kitchen items you need, board games, movies, extra blankets, etc. The surrounding property was so good we rarely left. We were constantly sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking the trails on the property and at nearby Mt Mansfield (just a mile up the road). We are already planning our return to Mansfield house and hope to spend time in the area for years to come.

Picture Perfect!
Stunning setting at the base of Mt. Mansfield, the largest mountain in the Green Mountain range.
We filled the home to capacity to celebrate Thanksgiving with my son, who moved to Vermont and was not able to come home for the holiday. The layout of the home is very comfortable. Warm and cozy with an amazing fireplace. The bedrooms are situated within 2 wings on either side of the main living area. Closed off by solid doors, allowing for a quiet and peaceful slumber away from those who enjoy staying up late. The main living area features a giant, well appointed kitchen with just about every appliance needed for those who love to cook, and a large table to gather and play games. To top it all off we had the great pleasure of watching the snow slowly and quietly drift from the sky all weekend. Enough to enhance the experience but not enough to make travel treacherous.
Fabulous location. Some of the best family time we’ve had! I would return in a heartbeat.

It’s a fantastic property for a large group! We had plenty of room! The outdoor seating area was fantastic. We throughly enjoyed having morning coffee while being in awe of the Mountain View!
It was an easy drive to Burlington and Lajoire Stables for horse back riding. The character and set up of the home was so welcoming. We hope to rent it again!

Perfect for a large group
A close family friend was being married at the Essex so 13 of us between the ages of 3 months and 65 years stayed at the Mansfield House and it was perfect. The little ones loved the pond and the yard. The layout of the house with bedrooms at the 2 ends allowed privacy and was amazingly quiet. The location is absolutely stunning with mountain views and beautiful fields with stone walls. As so many others have said, you feel as though you are staying in a friend's house, full of history and love.
