Friendly and efficient staff. Spacious room with well thought out design, I liked the shelving and open storage - a quick glance around to see nothing had been left behind. The large and fluffy towels and beaufully clean bathroom were lovely. The location was perfect for visiting Tredegar House for an evening ballet performance.
There wasn't anything we didn't like.

Unfriendly staff, nothing around the hotel (bit of a dead area), breakfast was pretty average, hotel seemed to be short-staffed

Convenient location to drive further into Wales. Friendly staff.
Decor was a bit sparse in the bedrooms. Could have been brightened up by a picture or non-grey paint.

We have never had a problem with the hotel's breakfast, assuming all normal health and safety precautions were in place. On one of our last mornings at the hotel we saw another guest inadvertently drop a fried tomato onto the floor below the breakfast bar, scoop it up and leave it for clean-up the side of the buffet, away from hot food... then just a moment later watched one of the male breakfast staff return it with tongs to the full tray of hot tomatoes in the buffet. Why?
While our stay was what we anticipated, having stayed there many times in previous years, we were astonished when we began receiving hundreds of $ in parking fines for parking in the hotel's own private parking lot, for the period we were paid guests. As there seems to be over a month's delay in receiving these notifications, no doubt there is the likelihood of us receiving additional fines for every night of the weeks we were guests at Holiday Inn, Newport. Zero explanation from hotel staff/management as to why this has happened, and apparently the responsibility is ours to keep checking back as we receive more fines to see if they will be removed. We were told that the overnight parking violations incurred by their paid guests, at their hotel's private parking lot, are NOT their responsibility. Potential Guests Beware!

The hotel was easy to find and close off the M4. We were given a room that faced the car park as the side facing the road might be noisier. They have a large car park and all you need to do is give them your registration number.
Breakfast was good with quite a bit of choice.
There is a pub nearby, the Dragonfly, which does lunches and evening meals. We just went in for a drink but the restaurant was very busy so might be best to book ahead.

One thing that stood out was how clean the hotel is. Even the corners in corridors were clean! We were pleasantly surprised at the size of our room, the bed comfort and the facilities. Staff were professional and friendly. Breakfast was great - and fantastic to have it included. Unlike Premier Inn, who have increased their prices, standards have dropped and you have to pay for breakfast. We stop at the hotel regularly to use the EV charger and now we will be staying overnight often too. Great location - for motorway, to visit the National Trust property and Newport. Pub next door has equally high standards.
Smokers standing close to front doors, so smoke drifting into lounge area - and cigarette ends on ground outside (despite there being a bin for them).
