About this house rental
Every aspect of our charming, completely renovated bungalow is thoughtfully designed to reflect our love of the San Diego beaches right down to the ocean sunset colors. With a fun retro vibe and surf decor, this completely upgraded beach bungalow is the perfect retreat -- just a short walk to all the fun that La Jolla has to offer! Wake up and stroll to one of several nearby beaches, take a quick walk to La Jolla Village for cool coffee shops, restaurants and shopping, or visit the tidepools. And remember you are also just a quick hop, skip, and a jump away from everything else San Diego has to offer!
The open concept kitchen and extended living room make this beach bungalow feel significantly more spacious than similar 1-bedroom bungalows in the area. The kitchen is complete with a full sized stove/oven and microwave plus a table for 4, the living room has a 50” Smart TV, and the bedroom even features a KING sized bed!
The living room also has a convertible sofa. The orange one is a European style that converts to a queen sized bed (much sturdier feeling when in “bed mode” than the traditional sofa beds we all grew up with) and is located in an area of the living room that makes it easy to leave the sofa in “bed mode” for the entire stay, if desired, while still maintaining a functioning living room in the remaining space, where a new Love Seat style couch adds to your overall seating.
The house is located on its own private lot on a quiet residential street. It is tucked back behind another house (that’s why we call it The Hidden Gem!) and comes complete with private parking for 3-4 cars and a spacious private yard that is fully enclosed (great for kids and pets) -- which is hard to come by this close to the beach!
These old beach cottages all have their quirks -- The Hidden Gem’s quirk is that you need to go through the bathroom to get to the bedroom. The good news is that the bedroom is also easily accessed through an exterior sliding glass door which is just steps away from the back kitchen door - so it is easy for everyone to get where they need to go even when the house is full!
There is a brand-new gas grill in the yard and Boogie boards and beach gear are also provided.
Everyone loves a fun beach getaway. Come relax and enjoy this tastefully designed, unique Retro Surf Cottage!
Dogs welcome. Max 2. Breed restrictions apply and 50-pound weight limit. Please ask if you are unsure. Pet Policy must be accepted. No cats.

Really cute bungalow! Very clean. The bed was quite comfortable! Great location to walk to the beach!

Hidden Gem was great, and the the location was perfect. The outdoor area was really relaxing and nice.

Great little cottage for a family of 3. It was an easy walk to many great restaurants and beaches. Where we are not beach people (in town for a sports tournament), the house was stocked with beach towels, 2 beach chairs and boogie boards.) Easy drive to many other San Diego area attractions. One thing to note, we are from an area of the country where AC is a given and didn’t realize the lack of any mention of AC in the property description was an indication of no AC. The house was very hot when we first arrived but it did cool down by opening all the windows. The yard had nice shaded and sunny areas and we were comfortable inside (with windows open) and outside.

My wife, 10 month old daughter, and two small poodles spent the week at The Hidden Gem 7/6/24 to 7/13/24 to get out of the Arizona heat for a week. We chose it based on location (all walking times): 5 minutes from the beach, 5 minutes from a market, 7 minutes from restaurants, and about 15 minutes from the main downtown area. Plus it had a king bed and a fenced yard so the dogs could roam and we could comfortably sit outside. Other Positives: Tidy upon arrival, owner responded immediately about a question I had, great shower pressure, tucked away from street, Roku TV. Biggest downside, and it is no fault of the place itself as we knew it going into it, but it had no dishwasher. With a kid and cooking a few times, we (my wife 90% of the time) felt like we were constantly doing dishes. Keep that in mind if you plan on staying for an extended period of time and don't plan on eating out every single meal. I did tell the owner about a few minor tweaks to enhance the stay of future renters: 1) the floor was swept fine, but not washed as our feet were pretty dirty (including our daughter's) about only after an hour of arriving 2) the grill needs to be updated as the outside and inside are rusted rendering it unusable and 3) more amenities in the kitchen, including Tupperware, saran wrap, aluminum foil, etc. No major issues though as we enjoyed our stay and I would recommend this place for a long weekend getaway if you want to be near everything!

Cute little place. Served its purpose for our vacay. The yard is lovely and private. Probably best for 2 adults and a small child.
4.7
Quiet and peaceful, cool breezes in the evening that cooled the place down quickly, easy walk to great beaches. We really enjoyed ourselves, and would highly recommend this place for a nice getaway.

This property was great I would stay again. It’s perfect for anyone with small children, enclosed fence while you don’t have to worry about them playing outside. A lot of greenery and privacy. A few non-essential amenities they listed were not available so I recc. Communicating with the host about anything important that you might need during your stay. The communication with our host was great and we had a wonderful during our stay.

It's a perfect little hideaway with an adorable little patio and close to all the things. Had a wonderful, comfortable stay.

My family and had a great time staying here. It is tucked away surrounded by lush plants and trees. It is a quick walk to the beach, dining and shops. The property had everything you would have at home from the kitchen, bath and everything needed for a beach day! We would definitely stay here again.

Very cute house, and a great location! Side note- the yard is so beautifully landscaped and the flowers are so amazing!

We had a great time at The Hidden Gem. We loved the house, patio, and our dog loved the enclosed yard.

I stayed with my 10 yr old daughter and I. The place was in a perfect location. Walking distance to beach, great restaurants, etc. it has a cute little yard that my daughter like to hang out in. The neighbors are very close, so you can hear outdoor conversations.
4.7
Amazing location - .5 mile from private dog friendly beach
Only complaint I have is that I stayed for 20 days and the couches and bed were not comfortable - get some new furniture and the place would be 5stars. I give it 4.

My wife and kids were supposed to attend a work conference with me. Our normal VRBO was already booked and we were not interested in staying in a hotel downtown. My wife found this place which is; not far from where we normally stay, close to the beach and where we're still able to vist all of our normal hang out spots in La Jolla & PB. At the last minute, my family had to cancel and stay home but I made the choice to keep the spot. BEST DECISION EVER!! I had to have equipment shipped out for the conference. Megan and Tammie were extremely helpful in everyway possible. The mother in law suite was really awesome to come back too after a long day of working. I was able to spread out, relax on the sofa, and rest well in the big king size bed. If this place is available during your search.....GRAB IT!!!

Comfortable bed, firm, nice secluded yard and patio. Kitchen simple and clean, adequate for cooking. Only negative was tiny bit musty smell but aired out immediately w door or window open, probably due to being just blocks from the ocean. Lovely for walks, close to museum and restaurants. It was perfect for us.
4.7
This cute little place was perfect. Easy walk to beach and local places to eat. Outside area was very well done. Very nice area.
4.7
Location was a short walk to the beach so that was very nice. The toilet was like a little toddler one! My husband kept complaining how it was too small but It was fine for me. The only downside was that the couch was soooo uncomfortable and just cheap! I wasn’t expecting the comforts of home but really couldn’t enjoy relaxing in the evenings. A comfy chair would have been nice. I would still recommend this place as long as it’s only 1 or 2 people.

Cute, quiet, sparkling clean, hidden home in residential area near multiple restaurants, stores, beach’s with parking on site. Most enjoyable stay.

My wife and I wanted to get away from Las Vegas for a few days and spend some relaxing time with our dog walking and exploring the coastline. That's exactly what happened. The location is perfect to walk to anything two people would need or want and our medium sized dog enjoyed it, also. The check in directions were easy to follow and even though the place is hidden from the road, we found it without any issue. We used the gas grill in the back patio area and it worked great. The ONLY "issue" we had was when we accidentally got swept by a big wave we didn't see coming in the evening and needed to dry our clothes, but there is no washer/dryer. Not an issue if you're only visiting for a few days. We'll be looking at this place again in the future if we plan another getaway with just the two of us and the dog.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Very quiet location set back from the street. Walking distance to the beach, grocery store, restaurants, etc.
Be aware that our booking included a refundable $1,500 damage deposit charged to our credit card. Refund was processed 2 weeks after departure.

The cottage is cute, but I was hoping it was close to downtown La Jolla. The description said Hulu and Roku were available, but there was nothing available when we arrived. The manager eventually came over after two calls and two days and linked in Hulu. The biggest problem was NO HEAT in the living area, and it was very cold in the mornings. The manager said she would bring over a space heater, but she never did. We were cold the whole time. I think a small refund is in order. Thank you.

A few positives and negatives with our stay:
Positives: a nice private patio about a 5 minute walk to the beach. Beach supplies provided (chairs, towels, toys for kids). Walking distance to a few restaurants. Separate house all to yourself. Full kitchen and grill -- (no pizza cutter provided). Host was very easy to get ahold of when we had questions and kind. Overall this place was very cute.
Negatives: It is about a 25 minute walk to the main drag in La Jolla with more restaurants and shops. There was a stain on the bed sheets and the shower curtain the day we arrived which were unpleasant to see. The bed is very firm, not very comfortable in my opinion. It got quite warm (no A/C) when all the windows were shut but cooled down quickly when windows were opened. 2 ceiling fans and box fan (provided) helped. No smoke alarm in bedroom.
Overall, positives outweighed the negatives but would probably stay somewhere closer to main drag in La Jolla next time we visit.

We had a great stay and enjoyed being so close to the water and in walking distance of great restaurants and beautiful sunsets!! Very grateful for the flexible host with our pets and checkout time and communication. We did have a gardener come by for a couple hrs unexpectedly on Sat afternoon that would have been good to know about so that’s the only reason for 4stars - it’s really 4 3/4 stars!!! So much about the place is set up to make it comfortable for short stays. Highly recommend!!
4.7
Great location, private courtyard, everything we needed, just what we wanted.
4.7
This little cottage was so clean, cheerful and cozy, and its short distance to the beach and to a variety of restaurants and shops made for a perfect vacation. I hope to stay here again in the future!
4.7
Perfect spot for a long weekend away! A short drive to all the activities we planned, and a comfortable place to relax in after we were done.
4.7
This house is situated perfectly in La Jolla. While there isn't much space on the small residential lots, this house has a surprisingly good sized yard for kids and dogs to frolic in a private setting. The beach, tide pools, and numerous restaurants are all within a short and pleasant walk. We easily drove to day trips at Legoland, San Diego Zoo, downtown, and Liberty Station. We will definitely see if this property is open next time we visit San Diego.

Everything was wonderful! Really loved the location and how close it was to the beach. Parking at beach was easier than I thought. How was very clean and had all the elements for an awesome rental.

The Hidden Gem was perfect for our stay. Easy walk to Windansea Beach and to downtown La Jolla.
The manager was easy to work with and had excellent communication prior to the stay.

Sweet place!

The property had a cute retro beach feel and the location was great for beach and dining. It was a hot temperature time of summer and there is not central AC so uncomfortable during day and still warm with wall unit at night. As on par for that area, weather varies and during a cooler stretch it would be better.

We were very pleased with the “Hidden Gem” just a few blocks from the beach in a quiet neighborhood . An amazing secluded 1940s cottage decked out with a beach theme. It’s small, but perfect for a couple maybe 4 total. Very comfortable and homey. Outdoor patio was great for coffee in the morning. The beach is just a few blocks away for amazing sunsets and local restaurants and bars. Once you get to the beach you can walk for about a mile to the the town along the beach, great views and the seals and sea lions were worth the walk. Staying at the Hidden Gem was a great location to explore all that LaJolla has to offer. I would highly recommend this location to friends and family
4.7
A cute beach cottage with good windows for light, small patio for a bit of privacy, and a decent king bed. The location is great; a walk to the beach is only a few blocks and it’s nice to have off-street parking.
We visited in February and it was quite chilly. The cottage has some gaps where the windows didn’t close completely plus a gap under the front door and along the side making the place quite drafty. The tile floor was also cold. Even with the electric heaters running it was still cold, especially the bedroom.
The bathroom functions as the main passageway between the bedroom and the living room. Although one can exit through the kitchen door, take a few steps down to the patio and back up to enter the bedroom door, it is not very practical. We ended up just walking through the bathroom and using it as a hallway.
Overall we enjoyed our stay in the area.

We loved the rental! Very clean and spacious for a house about studio size.

Small but so cute! Good use of space. Very close walking distance to beaches, shops and food. Views are amazing. Really cute patio in back of house. Very clean, comfy bed, all the things we needed. Well designed, looks just like photos on website. Host was very responsive. No problems with checking in or anything else. Loved the backpack chairs for bringing to the beach. Thank you!
