About this house rental
At The Gateway to La Jolla, 5 1/2 blocks from La Jolla Shores Beach.
Spread over 3/4 acres of gardens and yards, including a grass volleyball / badminton court, 2 hot tubs, 2 BBQ patios, fire circles with firewood & plenty of parking.
Two homes and a casita for a total of 10 bedrooms with 16 beds (mostly queen and king) and 6 1/2 bathrooms to comfortably (and legitimately) sleep up to 27.
The great thing about this location is you have a signalized left turn in and out of La Jolla Parkway, So it’s a very quick and easy ingress / egress into La Jolla and practically anywhere in San Diego due to the quick access (2 minutes) to Hwy 52 or Interstate 5.
There is a five car driveway and practically unlimited on-street parking along the cul de sac.
There is a pedestrian overpass a couple hundred feet from the front door which crosses La Jolla Parkway / Torrey Pines Road to the Starbucks, Subway Sandwiches, Mini-Mart and Hotel La Jolla (great pool lounge and penthouse restaurant, often with live entertainment).
From there it's just five blocks to the best family beach in San Diego, La Jolla Shores Beach and Kellogg Park.
It's a very pleasant walk, past the restaurants, clothing stores and kayak / surfboard rental shops on Avenida de la Playa.
If you're driving it’s just a couple of minutes to Highway 5 or La Jolla Shores Beach, because you’re at “The Gateway to La Jolla”, before the La Jolla congestion starts.
It's a five minute drive to Sea World or Pacific and Mission Beaches and ten minutes to the airport, downtown San Diego / Gaslamp or the San Diego Zoo.
Lego Land is about fifteen minutes to the north.
The Village of La Jolla (Prospect Street, Girard) is about nine blocks south, and is walkable.

Great place for big family reunion. Lots of space and a big grassy yard for kids to play games, 2 houses plus a casita was perfect for our sprawling clan. Comfortable beds and roomy living spaces, was really clean for our check-in. Plenty of kitchen supplies. Only 2 complaints: we had to wait awhile to check-in while crews pick up supplies from previous event. And the A/C was not cool in lower house so all room fans going! Easy access to beach and cool shade in yard relieved that complaint. And owner apologized for lateness. Owner very accessible and answered all questions. Yard is overgrown around back patio, very lush vegetation. Overall we do recommend this place for large groups who love the outdoors and an old-school style of living.

An old school beach bungalow, this place — on a full acre! — has well equipped kitchens for cooking family meals. There is a huge lawn including a badminton net, a valuable camellia collection, and dozens of very large, mature trees. Brick walkways lend a sense of diligent, loving, homemade care to the property. It’s a brisk 10-minute walk to Kellogg Park and beach. Low ceilings and exposed beams give a cozy atmosphere. Living room seats 12 comfortably.

This is a great stay if you do not book during a heat wave and don’t like AC. We spent Labor Day weekend here. And while the location is good, the amenities, not so much. Our number one problem was the AC or lack there of. I wish that this was mentioned in the description. Coming from Arizona, AC is VERY important. The main house has AC but it was on a “hot tub” timer and had to be “reset “ every hour. The host stated it was because the AC would be left on when folks left and he ended up with a very large electric bill. Honestly, a one night stay would cover that. The 2nd home had no AC at all. The host stated again,
If we were not in a heat wave this is a great place. The host provided fans, but the property was
secluded and had no circulation throughout the property unless we all stayed in the yard between the houses. At one point we put up tents just so our kids could sleep comfortable, but we were asked to move it because we were killing the grass. The host stated, the grass is probably already yellow due to the heat wave. When we left the grass was fine. No discoloration or damage. This is the only relief during the night our kids had. Including the infants. We paid to sleep outside. The fans provided didn’t push much air, they were dirt and 3 did not work. The host at first replaces one with a broken cyclone fan, and later dropped of 2 new fans. This provided little circulation. We went to bed late every night until we could tolerate the heat in the houses or slept outside. The house has ceiling fans, but they didn’t push much air either. A suggestion, install patio fan, might help move air around. DO NOT BOOK this home during a heat wave.
The kitchens were not well stock for a large family gatherings. Unless you BBQ the entire time. The property did have 2 BBQ grills. There was 1 large stock pot. 2 baking sheets, 1 med bowl for mixing, some cooking utensils and that is about it. It is a good thing we brought our own pots and pans and our own paper plates/bowls and plastic utensils. It was a little bit of a hassle having food in both houses. The fridge in the main house is not very big. The 2nd house had left over food and drink in it. The dining room in the main house was crowded and you could only use half of 2 of the 3 tables in there. 2 tables could accommodate at least 6 people. Most of our family ate outside because it was so hot inside. Again, we paid to be outside.
Much more can be said, but there is no room left.

Great locations
We had a great time at all the 3 houses. Had everything we needed. Beach chairs, coolers, umbrellas, volleyball court, towels, enough beds, bbq area, etc. Great for all 19 of us.
As other review have stated, definitely some updating however it looks like Dan (the owner) is trying to get everything ironed out.
Locating is Great and we’ll definitely be back
Thanks again Dan👍.

We had all 3 properties. The homes were in a great location and plenty of property for the kids. The homes need major upgrades especially new appliances. The owner was good and kept in contact. The landscape needs to be cleaned and porches powered washed.

We had a wonderful time with our children and grandchildren. We were 24 people, and finding a good location for that many is difficult. These houses are not new and fancy, but suited our group perfectly. We could walk or drive to the beach. The bigger house had room for us all to gather for meals, etc.

The compound hosted the full group, but there were many aspects about our stay that were terribly inconvenient and should have been noted ahead of spending $8,000 on a weekend.
For starters, the house was not in great shape. The signed agreement (as you will have in your records) allowed us to check in at 11am on Friday, however in speaking with Dan, he the house was "being put together". He advised one of the two houses on the complex would be available by 1:30, so I showed up with two of the guests and he was still on the property fixing things - there were multiple broken chairs (including ones with the arms broken off entirely), the sink was running in the kitchen (Dan recognized it and simply said that's just the way it is - I can confirm that's the way it ran all weekend, too), the carpets were old and dingy, the hot tubs were extremely dirty and uninviting, etc.
It took Dan another hour+ to get the second house on the complex ready, so despite guests arriving from the East Coast ready to relax, we squeezed into the one house that was ready as we waited for Dan to 'fix a busted sprinkler' and more. When he finally left us to enjoy the space (after 3pm - over 4 hours after the agreed 11am), I quickly got a call from him saying the game of volleyball was loud, which was very off-putting considering the circumstances we had already dealt with.
The biggest concern was Dan repeatedly entering the complex unannounced and uninvited. As all but 2 of the group were out golfing, he came by and was walking through both properties. One guest who had just gotten out of the shower and wasn't expecting a stranger (to him) was startled. The previous day, a guest noticed that a tarp had been placed on a storage area that was not there Friday, meaning Dan must have come by both Saturday and Sunday (the whole party was golfing whenever this occurred, so there were no witnesses to confirm). He reserves the right to come by the property he owns I'm sure, but I can't imagine that's approved without any communication and on each of the days on site. Our privacy was not respected, and it was certainly uncomfortable to think all our possessions were left alone as Dan perused through the houses.
This was my first time with VRBO, and if this is the standard of the homes and owners I would certainly re-think using VRBO again.

I reserved the Grounds of La Jolla to host my wife's 40th surprise birthday party, which included a five course dinner for 25 people, prepared by a private chef.
Dan was incredibly accommodating and helpful, beginning even before our stay. He coordinated with the private chef, allowing him to walk through the property and plan his dinner service, days before our check-in. He even went out of his way to obtain additional items we needed for this dinner, including additional stemware, linens, chairs, water pitchers, etc.. Furthermore, he checked in regularly to make sure everything was going as planned and to offer any other help he could provide.
The rooms were ample and private enough for our 15 out of town guests who stayed with us, and the homes had very comfortable common areas to lounge around. The outdoor areas were very large and well kept, providing a broad landscape for our children to run around, explore, and play.
I strongly recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a comfortable and extraordinarily hospitable home base, to host their large group of close friends or family.

We had a large group of athletes stay here, and it was perfect. Ample bed space (including some cots that Dan was kind enough to provide when we arrived), great outdoor space, and terrific kitchens for cooking large meals for our group. The layout is unique and sprawling, and has the right mix of big common areas for group gatherings as well as quiet nooks and spaces to unwind for those that wish to get away from the group. Perfect to have two hot tubs and a big lawn as well. Dan was wonderfully helpful and responsive the whole time. The location was perfect as well -- a very quick walk to a lovely beach was the cherry on top to make for a wonderful stay. Recommend!

My husband and I reserved this property for our family vacation for 25 people. We have children, grandchildren and great grandkids. This was a long overdue break and we needed a place that we could all relax, go to the beach, feed everyone and hang out at night. The property totally fit the bill for that. There are comfortable rooms and bathrooms for everyone. The kids were also able to play volleyball and have a large area to run around on the property. Dan addressed any issue that we brought to him. He is very accessible as he lives near by. This is not a luxury property and it could use updates but we enjoyed our stay immensely!
