About this bed and breakfast
*** If you want peace and serenity, this is your place! If you want to party, this is NOT the place. No pets or smokers allowed. Please do not bother asking because we have a strict policy about this and will always say no to smoking or pets. There are no laundry facilities on site, however there are several laundromats in the area. If you need laundry on-site, you may want to find another listing to book. ***
Newly constructed in 2016, with an inspiring eastern view from the deck. Enjoy comfort, style, and modern amenities all wrapped up in a quiet neighborhood where you can hear the birds chirp and the wind rustle the leaves. Sunrise Perch is its own private standalone home with its own private entrance and one parking spot. The floors are gorgeous acacia hardwoods throughout and modern "brushed linen" tile (no carpet anywhere).
This space has a full kitchen, stocked with full-sized appliances, quartz counters, large sink, and all cooking/eating utensils that you'll need to make a great meal. The bathroom is stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, and hair dryer. The ceilings throughout are vaulted, giving an airy feel, with ceiling fans. All bedding and linens, including blankets, are washed for each stay. We emphasize and take pride in cleanliness.
If you are a party of 5, please check with me before booking. This space will fit 5, with the ideal being 2 adults and 3 children. The fold-out sofa will not fit 2 adults, so this space cannot accommodate a party of 5 adults.
We built the space with basic Feng Shui principles in mind for this size space. We chose this spot on the property so that guests could enjoy the natural beauty of the setting, especially the sunrise over the mountains to the east from the deck. Window positioning inside the home was chosen to take advantage of the views and the cross-breeze that being on a hill affords. We have new (2016) central heat and AC as well. Outside are four chairs to soak in the beautiful eastern mountains and tree canopy views. Please note: we do not have laundry facilities on site. There are several laundromats in La Mesa if you need to do laundry.
The bed/headboard and other wall art is handmade by me. I enjoy all sorts of carpentry and I like making both decorative and functional items from wood. The desk in the bedroom is handmade by a local Mt. Helix artisan. Put your clothes in the antique Javanese hutch in the bedroom, which was built in the 1800s! Be sure to check out the carving details on this amazing piece of furniture.
Guest access:
You have full access to the guest house and its amenities. This includes the deck and side yard in front of the deck. Your parking spot is the one at the top of the driveway area, with the black iron fence.
Guest interaction:
We no longer live on the property, however we are very close by in case of emergencies. I am available via text and message. My hope is that your stay is pleasant and peaceful.
Neighborhood overview:
Sunrise Perch is in the Mt. Helix neighborhood of La Mesa, CA. Our neighborhood is for those seeking quiet and serenity during their stay. This is not a neighborhood for anyone who wants to party, talk/laugh loudly, or play loud music. If you're looking for "livelier" places to stay, we recommend staying in downtown San Diego. What we love about Mt. Helix is that it's a semi-rural setting that is still quite close to downtown San Diego and beaches. The landscape is a beautiful tapestry of unique gardens surrounding custom, artsy, older homes. The neighborhood is hilly, with winding roads and beautiful views from most streets. There is shopping nearby (not walking distance, but an easy car drive) like grocery stores, coffee shops, fast food restaurants, gas stations, etc. The climate here is perfect. It is almost always about ten degrees warmer than the coast during the day. At night it can be about ten degrees cooler than the coast. Nearby (about 5 minutes drive) is La Mesa Village, which is a quaint, cute, walkable setting with lots of great dining/drinking options as well as boutique shops and antique stores. Try heading up to Mt. Helix Park (check my guidebook for location), which is a short 3-4 minute drive from our house. There you will enjoy sweeping panoramic views from the amphitheater and breathtaking sunsets. There is also a 1/4 mile hiking trail around the peak of Mt. Helix.
Getting around:
You will need a car to get around. If you don't want to take your car into downtown San Diego, you can always park at a trolley stop and take the trolley. There are trolley stops throughout the metro San Diego area.
Other things to note:
The king bed fits two adults easily, and the fold down leather sofa (full size) will fit two small children or one adult. We also offer a twin sized air mattress, which is in the bedroom closet. If you are looking for a party atmosphere, this is not it. Please check out downtown San Diego and the surrounding areas if that is your scene. This is a family friendly space! The noise of children is welcome and is not a problem for us. We just don't want any partiers. Our guests come to Mt. Helix for relaxation and serenity. Due to the hill location, noise carries very far in the canyons. We ask that all loud talking/laughing/socializing after sundown be done indoors with the windows closed, out of respect to our neighbors. Because this is a pure residential setting with no other vacation rentals around, all of our neighbors work regular business hours and need quiet after sundown. We hope you will enjoy and appreciate the quiet, family atmosphere of our neighborhood.

My girlfriend and I went for a short getaway in San Diego. The house was very clean, furnished, very nicely, great shower with lovely views. The neighborhood was very quiet during the day and night providing some very relaxing sleep. We really enjoyed our stay at the Sunset Perch and would definitely return. I would recommend Susan’s place whether it’s for a short or long stay.

My husband and I rented Susan’s place while traveling from NJ to visit our son who lives nearby. The house was very clean, parking was right out front, the views were incredible. We slept every night with the windows open and without running the AC. It was absolutely perfect! The neighborhood is so quiet, perfect for sleeping and relaxing. The house is updated nicely and plenty of room. We truly enjoyed our time at Susan’s place.

The place is pretty nice. Very comfy bed. Nice layout. Very peaceful. The wood floor squeaks and cracks really loud when walking on it. The cabinet door panel below sink kept falling off, we had to keep fixing it. The towels provided are thin and cheap. Ice maker doesn’t work. Motion light over front door doesn’t work so u need to use the flashlight on your phone to see the key pad. Parking is right on the road on gravel, barely enough room. We would stay here again though.

This is a nice and quiet neighborhood. The descriptions are very accurate. The place is very clean. Bathroom looks brand new - great shower! This was easy in and way out. We will definitely consider this again.

Perfect for our 3 day stay. The apartment is in a very quiet and safe neighborhood. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen contained all the necessities. A trolley stop was not too far away so we didn't have to drive downtown. Loved the handmade artwork! So unique!

My husband and I stayed at Sunrise Perch for our anniversary. It was just perfect, so peaceful and comfortable it felt like home. Tucked away in the hills of La Mesa, it's just a short distance from the coast, Old Town, downtown San Diego and etc... but the setting and the neighborhood really makes you feel like you actually live there. Beautifully lit space with simple, peaceful decor.

We arrived to find, not only did we not have hot water the shower handle was broken! It was 3 days before we could take a shower. The sheets on the bed were grey and very, very wrinkled. The spread was put on inside out and the hem was ripped which I caught my foot on. The parking is awful because we had to park on the road. They also did not tell us that there was no cable TV, so we had to know our passwords to use the fire stick. On the positive side, the kitchen appliances were very nice except for no dishwasher and the furniture was very comfortable. The owner was nice, but it isn't really a good location for seniors in their 80's.

We originally booked this place due to the proximity to my brother-in-law’s house. But it is so comfortable staying here we will be back!We spent yesterday watching the hummingbirds, reading and binging Amazon Prime. La Mesa has great options for dinner

Quaint and Quiet getaway in San Diego
We were glad that we stayed at Susan's property during our 3 nights stay in San Diego. We are from out of state and felt like living like a local in the neighborhood. The location is up in the hills of San Diego suburban area, yet not far from major attractions place near/in downtown. The inside property is very clean, has everything we need (except laundry, but we were aware of it). My husband enjoyed his work-cation with fast and reliable wifi in the unit with a gorgeous view from his desk, while I and my daughter explored the town. Thank you, Susan, your property is highly recommended for a singles, couple or a small family!

I’d stay again!
This bungalow was just what I needed. It was close to my sisters home and provided a comfortable place all my own while my sisters house was full of family members for a family reunion. The only issue was the parking. There is one gravel space for 1 car only. It’s along the narrow street and because I have a large Black Range Rover, I was concerned it might get hit overnight so I decided to park at my sisters house and get picked up/dropped off. My car fit on the gravel space but I just felt more secure not parking it there. I would stay there again.

Quiet Spot in the Hills
Had a great time at Sunset Perch. Check out the restaurants on La Mesa Blvd nearby.

Mt. Helix Guest house
Everything is as described on the web-site. Very clean and well organized. There was a bottle of wine waiting for us when we checked in. Be aware that there are no laundry facilities on=site: the only negative!
Susan is very prompt in responding to questions before you arrive, and while you are staying there.
The house is separate from the main house with a nice view of the area.
We recommend staying here.

Very well equipped accommodation
Apartment was well equippd, comfortable and spacious for 2 people. Excellent instructions on finding & accessing the property & a good information folder. We didn't meet Susan & did think it would have been nice to have just had a quick visit to welcome us. Also thought it would be good to give information on recycling. We kept separate anything we thought could be recycled & Stephen thanked us for doing so but it would be good to encourage all visitors to do so. A good base for exploring San Diego.

Clean, Quiet, Great Views.
The guest house was just what we expected, it matched the description perfectly. The hosts were very friendly and responsive to our questions. The small extra touches were greatly appreciated. We would surely stay here again. Thank you Susan for everything.
4.8
Comfortable with amazing views
The guest house is in a very quiet neighborhood with easy access (15-30 minute drive) to all of the San Diego tourist attractions. The guest information book was very useful. We ate at 3 of the suggested restaurants and they were all good.

This house made our trip complete
The property is close to so much to explore. They were so helpful, they leave a notebook for their guests with food options, exploring options with their opinions in it to help you decide what to do and where to go. By far the best trip I’ve had in my life and this property just made it better. It’s cozy but with a lot of room. It’s so quiet and dark at night. Was so relaxing. This is def some where people should stay and visit.

Great place to stay.
This was a great place to use as our home base as we visited the sights in San Diego.
The property was clean and very comfortable. The bottle of wine was a nice touch.
If we are in this area again we would love to stay!

Quaint spot surrounded by beautiful scenery
The guest house was perfect for a fun girls weekend with my mom. It was clean and nice and had everything we needed. The location was perfect for us. It's not far from La Mesa’s quaint little downtown or the great shopping San Diego has to offer. I would definitely stay here again.
