Nulla, Pessim

Zakros is a small, quite town out of the hustle and bustle of the more crowded beach towns. The hotel is spartan but everything you need is all there and the staff is eager to help. There are restaurants and supermarkets incredibly close by.

Great location and view from the balcony. Woman who runs the hotel is friendly
The water was cut off from 7pm until 8pm the next morning. No showers or toilet. Left one day early because of the problem..

Friendly proprietors, excellent local typical restaurant offering basic rooms, on the E9 footpath and close to the start of the 'Gorges of the Dead' walk. Quiet at night, with a lovely view from balcony. Typically Cretan lodgings but not a 'hotel' ... remember that although it has the title 'hotel' it also has the title 'rooms'. This is a good overnight stay for walkers, and is by no means luxurious. But the water is hot, there is a kitchenette in your room with a couple of items to make a snack, and the bedding is clean, although somewhat basic. We ate well, slept well and felt safe and ready for the day ahead. If you are looking for luxury, fine paintwork or room decoration, a lift, a lounge or car parking adjacent to the building, this is NOT the place for you. You can park on the street or in the car park of the museum 100 m away. Remember this is an untouristy part of Crete, where the locals go to meet and have coffee or a meal, and the place reflects that it is a place for the local community and not for luxury-hotel seekers. Be open-minded and enjoy the real Crete.
Nothing, because I accepted that the hotel has not been refurbished to modern tastes, but has all the basics for a very reasonably priced overnight stay. Yes, you might be shocked by the state of the grouting in the bathroom, yes you might feel that certain parts of the paintwork need to be refreshed, but if you are there to eat and sleep and move on, try not to judge - not everyone has the income to keep up with modern taste and this is a good reminder of real-life Crete, and for some a pleasant trip back into the past. If you are not open-minded and ready to see or experience things as the locals do, please go elsewhere.

Right in the centre of Zakros, easy access to nearby beaches and places worth visiting, e g Gorge of the Death. Friendly and helpful owners running also a restaurant next door.

Marcos and Nectaria are generous and welcoming. Hotel ideally placed to make the gorges towards Kato zokros.

When you go past the first visual impression of the hotel (it seems it was made way back when and it's just been maintained, no modern aspects to it), it's actually quite a fine place for a small village in mountains. However, it was superb for what I needed - a room for a night close to a hiking trail leading to Zakros archaeological site and beach.
Having said this, I must add that the owners were EXCEPTIONALLY kind, helpful and hospitable. They arranged for my return trip by car from the beach level up to the village free of charge, also treating me to a couple of mezes with my evening beer which I actually ordered, but they charged only the beer.

It was a very old hotel with great character. Like a retro hotel from 30 or 40 years ago. Lots of interesting photographs from the past and fascinating objects and ornaments from a bygone age. The lady running it Nectaria was a wonderful host. Hotel Zakros was a little frayed at the edges but that made it all the more special. I had a lovely lunch on arrival and breakfast was tasty too!
This hotel might not be everyone’s cup of tea but I couldn’t fault it. Even the quaint bathroom with ‘telephone’ shower tickled me.

I liked the potential of the place and the owner - or was it their daughter? I felt welcome and somewhat at home...
Hotel Zakros is a hidden gem. Under its rustic looks lays a lot of potential. Currently its run by its very nice owner but does not reach its potential. Its full of unnecessary items in the room, ugly decoration and lacks attention. A loving hand could use the patina and with little effort of some paint and rearranging of stuff plus minor investments that place would really rock.

The Hosts was very nice and friendly. The Wi-Fi working very well and fast. The room has a nice view on the mountains. Place is in a very good location in the city center. When You read reviews You will be ready for everything else.
Place is very old and not renovated. It could be a really great place if there was less things in room but not damaged and working. For me place was ok but for someone more sensitive it could be very hard to stay there.

It's in the center of the small village and it's close to the beach and to the gorge.
The toilet smelt bad. The fridge smelt bad. The apartment was really old. It's better to pay 40 euros and stay somewhere with dignity than pay 20 and stay there.

Simple, good, traditional breakfast
