Nice clean rooms, especially the spacy family rooms on the top floor.
There are almost no facilities and no personnel present, except during breakfast. No possibility to get a cup of coffee or tea in the evening. Sauna was closed.

Great breakfast, nice spacious rooms. Good location as it is in the center of Virgen.
Wifi was poor, same beds needs repairs as the whole facility. Sauna and wirlpool were not available, perhaps during winter time, but would have been nice after a mountain tracking.

Located about 7-10 min drive from Matrei/Kals, and 25 min from St. Jakob ski resorts. Comfortable beds, clean rooms. Breakfast was nice, but...
8:00 am start for breakfast is a little too late, if you want to be first on the slopes (both ski resorts open at 9:00 am). On the pictures there is salmon, however it was not included in the buffet. We have asked for it, and were promised next morning, but we never got it.

The staff is very helpful and friendly. The breakfast buffet is great. Always fresh and beautifully prepared. Also recommendable is the restaurant and the in-house special beer.
The equipment and furniture of the bedrooms are quite old. Annoying was the balcony of the room, which can also be used by other guests and was used nightly for smoking. Very annoying when it then suddenly starts to stink in the room.

Very nice hotel, I recommend this place.

Virgen is a very nice village at the entrance of the Virgental valley - a great base for many fantastic hikes in the Hohe Tauern (also, Lienz Dolomites a little bit further away is a small but very beautiful mountain range that you can't miss if you like hiking). The guesthouse itself is very nice, our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. Breakfast was very good, the food in the restaurant was delicious and the staff was nice and friendly. There is a tourist information point just two buildings away and if you go or drive down from the village to the bottom of the valley, there is a nice walking area alongside the river which is also great for running if you're into it. Actually, this wasn't our first-choice accommodation (the one that we originally booked recalled it the next day citing calendar error), but we had fantastic stay in Panzl-Brau, so absolutely no regrets.
No WiFi coverage in the room on the 1st floor - good signal downstairs in the restaurant, however, and the mobile data (LTE) coverage was great. There is a free private parking place indeed, but sometimes all places were occupied by the guests of the restaurant - I had to park somewhere else and move the car later.

The location of the hotel is great, really easy to find by car and you can leave your car in a dedicated parking lot right next to the hotel. Beautiful hiking trails start nearby, so this place is a perfect base if you plan an active holiday. The apartment is quite comfy, it is a typical old fashioned Austrian Gastholf with all the upsides and downsides. The Gasthof operates its own restaurant within the building itself, so if you are not in the mood for cooking, it is a good alternative.
Although I booked a 50 m2 apartment (suitable to 4 persons), what we got in practice was more of a small studio with a duble bed and a sofa put right next to each other. It was fine for the two of us, however if we had gone three (as originally planned and booked for), then the apartment would have been just too small and uncomfortable. It is also a bit weird that usually noone is at the reception so you have to go to the restaurant and talk to the staff there, so one of them comes to the reception at some point. This is not a big deal of course, however makes your life a bit more difficult when you carry your luggages around.
