Aldeburgh is a pretty coastal town on the river Alde and enjoys breathtaking views both seawards and following the river Alde inland towards Orford. Its name comes from 'Alde Burgh' meaning "old fort" and the town’s history is closely linked to the changes time and Mother Nature have wrought to the coastal map.
Aldeburgh was once an important Tudor port and its shipbuilders were responsible for Francis Drake’s ‘Golden Hind’. But over time the River Alde silted up taking its toll on the town’s fortunes, and coastal erosion swept away the heart of its old town. Some historic buildings have survived the centuries, such as 400-year old Moot Hall (pictured above), the Norman Church and a Martello tower.

What a treat to stay at Hartington! The bright, sunny rooms were lovely and there was so much space for our family of five. The extra large kitchen was a perfect room for meals and sitting by the large front windows. On the same floor, the large sitting room with beautiful windows was also lovely and led to one of our favorite features: the clean, spacious, manicured back garden with a huge table and even an LED lit umbrella. Upstairs were all the bedrooms, which allowed sleepy children the space and quiet to sleep while the rest of the family could enjoy the house downstairs.
In addition to the spacious, bright accommodations, a benefit of Harrington is the proximity to High Street. A 1 minute stroll leads right to the bakery and infamous Fish and Chip spot. Just five minutes to the beach and another five to our kids’ favorite spot: the boat pond and Moot Hall. So convenient to all our favorite parts of town!
We had such a lovely time and felt grateful to have found such a beautiful family home. We hope to return to Aldeburgh and would be pleased to stay at the Hartington house again.
