About this cottage rental
This recently renovated cottage is in a block of six lovely cottages which used to house the old stables for the village manor. You will have exclusive use of the cottage for the duration of your stay. The renovation of the cottages has been done with your comfort and enjoyment in mind. You can expect lots of character and luxury finishes with contemporary decoration. There is a Smart TV for cosy nights in, access to WiFi as well as iPod docking speakers. The cottage has two really comfortable bedrooms designed for a peaceful nights sleep - leaving you refreshed and ready for a day of exploring either the local countryside or the historic city of York
The walk to York, through the parks, alongside the river is idyllic and takes approx. 40 minutes. The cottage, set in this quiet and tranquil location is a hidden gem on the outskirts of town. Perfect for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, and families alike.
Parking for 1 car available onsite. Please note the EV charger is a 3 pin version so you would need the correct cable for this.

I like staying here when I want self catering with secure parking but I think it would benefit from better housekeeping sometimes. I think it needs heating more generously as the seasons change. The welcome pack is very meagre and full of plastic milk sachets and plastic wrapped biscuits. It used to be significantly better with chocolate, tea, coffee etc. The wifi is good.

Our 2nd visit to this house which is ideal for a quiet York visit and great for racegoers as it’s a short walk alongside the track itself down to the racecourse entrance.
Three good pubs in walking distance in Bishopsthorpe add to the experience.
The house itself is very clean & tidy with a welcome pack on arrival and everything you need for the stay.
Easy arrival & departure, only thing was I couldn’t find a shaving point, may just be me but worth bearing in mind.
Would happily book again

This is the second time I’ve stayed in this property. It’s in a lovely quiet location on the edge of York. There’s easy access with a bus stop at the end of the drive. Very comfortable and well equipped for self catering. The bathroom tile grouting need a good clean and the shower seal was mouldy and needs replacing, otherwise no real complaints. I would definitely stay here again.

The property is in a beautiful location, just hearing birdsong in the morning started the day perfectly. The property its self is comfortable particularly the downstairs, the bedrooms are very small and the hall would benefit from a curtain as it is very open. On two days there was a strong smell of drains (which I noticed another review mentioned). We have stayed in other StaysYork properties and in comparison the welcome pack at Middlethorpe was very poor. However, we would consider staying again.

Have stayed here before- as usual it was clean and ready for us. Very comfortable and handy for where we needed to be.

A fantastic off the road location which was both quiet yet still conveniently close to York, literally a ten minute drive away.
Our cottage (No. 1) had it's own private back yard, open plan living room and kitchen, two bathrooms and bedrooms with a spacious hallway.
A hassle free perfect weekend. Would definitely use again.

The place is very handy and I like it but I’ve stayed a lot of times and gradually noticed the deterioration in the maintenance and housekeeping unfortunately. It’s not a huge thing but finding other peoples used towels, crumbs, dirty plug holes and grout, bathroom toiletries empty (again!!) is getting annoying as the price hasn’t come down. There is a large wall stain in the upper hallway, the bathroom tap isn’t fixed in place, the shower screen is a bit grubby. The welcome hamper used to be great but it’s just cheap biscuits and a few tea, coffee and milk sachets. A simple pint of milk would be much appreciated and probably involve less plastic waste. Curtain in hall would be great too. It’s a big window and not private. I’m a big fan of the place but it’s getting expensive so standards need to be better.

Great place to stay, has almost everything we needed (no colander/sieve!). Comfortable and cosy- have also stayed here in winter so know its warm- and easy to access York and beyond.

On first arrival the cottages were beautiful. Walking into number 1, we also all thought it was beautiful! However, looking around, there were a lot of cobwebs in the corners of the room and spiders. I had to go round with a cloth and wipe them away. Then as the night went on, the stench of sewage coming from the hallway wasn’t pleasant! (This stench also stayed for the whole weekend) The next day, we all wanted showers, however the showers temperature couldn’t be changed, so we had to have a scolding red hot shower at the hottest temperature! To top it off, the bathroom blind was smothered in mould. A lovely cottage with a lot of potential but needs to be cleaned more thoroughly. Disgruntled we paid more for this cottage also!

6 Cottages ex Stables, beautifully converted, situated alongside Middlethorpe Hall, once an upmarket Night Club/Restaurant, now a hotel. Peace and quiet guaranteed. Close to York racecourse and Bishopthorpe village for shops and Pubs, York City centre a short drive away.
What let Cottage Nos.1 down was it needed cleaning from floor to ceiling, Cobwebs in most rooms, leather bedhead thick with dust, among other things.
Two items of dirty clothing were found behind each of two bedroom doors. We reported these issues and we were told they would be looked into when we vacated the Cottage. We hope they do!!

We had a 3 night stay at this wonderful accommodation. Great location easy access to York. Spotless and very comfortable. The property is set in lovely private grounds. We would have no hesitation in trying to book the accommodation for future visits.

Excellent customer service from Stays
Cottage was not for us but in a great location. The customer service from Chris and team was excellent as always. Chris very quickly dealt with changes to our booking. We have booked through Stays a few times and always very satisfied with friendly service and quality of properties.

Lovely stay, great Location
This cottage was clean and most importantly, for an allergy suffer, mold free. It was in a great location near down town York without the noise and traffic. Will definitely stay again if I make it back that way!

Excellent stay
Immaculate, comfortable, relaxing. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The photos on the website were a true image. I couldn't fault the accommodation. It was a little out of town but a lovely walk to get there and an adequate bus service 2 mins from the property.

Living in a quiet surrounding with easy access to York
We spent a very good weekend here in a cosy cottage near York. The only issue was wifi which was poor. The cottage, however, is lovely and decorated to a high standard. Nice welcome hamper. So good to have a parking space at the front door. We would love to come back in summer.

Great find, so close to the York but in it’s own quiet hamlet.
We absolutely loved our stay at No.1 Middlethorpe cottage, it was exactly what we were looking for. Such a lovely quiet, rural location but so close to the beautiful village of Bishopthorpe or a short bus ride or walk along the river to York. Very comfortable stay, welcome hamper was a nice touch, house had good amenities we will definitely stay again.

Nice for a weekend stay in York
Originally booked into No 5 but got there to no heating or hot water- apparently the boiler is “temperamental “.
Fortunately this was just before Stay York shut for the day and after a phone call we were quickly moved to No 1. Spacious and comfortable but looked like it had not been prepared for guests that weekend- all minor issues like no shower gel, no salt in salt pot, and bits of glitter on the floors. Be aware whilst there is wi-if it pretty poor. All that said we would be happy to use this cottage, or one of the others here, for a short visit

Lovely cottage in an excellent location
Having stayed here in a different cottage a couple of years ago our family and I were excited to return the weekend before Christmas as a special treat for my sons 15th birthday. Directions to and access to the cottages was simple and straight forward and the cottage was clean and perfect for our 2 night stay. We not hesitate to stay here again when we decide to explore York in the future.

Luxurious and convenient for York
Beautiful, red brick cottage in secure, gated park. Modern and comfortable interior with a well-equipped kitchen and a little patio for use in good weather.

Lovely Location, Beautiful Property BUT…..
We enjoyed our 4 day stay very much but required reasonable WiFi for work commitments. WiFi is beyond terrible, difficult to send/receive emails let alone access web. Poor EE service in location hence added need for functional WiFi. Also radiators need bleeding. Sounds like Niagara Falls when the heat comes on. These are both small issues which we hope the owners choose to correct quickly. Grab bar in the shower would be helpful as it is an awkward in/out and an accident waiting to happen. Otherwise well equipped, very comfortable and quiet.
