The region
Exmoor is situated in South West Britain, specifically across West Somerset and North Devon. Often referred to as England's best kept secret, Exmoor is a wonderful holiday destination for anyone looking for a holiday in the great outdoors! There's so much to see and do, from short walks to long expeditions across the moors or horse riding, taking in a safari or sight-seeing at your own pace around the 'picture postcard' villages and hamlets.
Porlock Weir has a quaint little harbour and its own unique charm; the port has a long and colourful history. Today Porlock Weir is a quiet harbour and a thriving community that welcomes tourists every year, many of whom come to enjoy the pretty scenery, shops, tea rooms, pubs and local cuisine. On a fine day, the South West Coast Path offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the fabulous views across Porlock Weir and the bay. The coastal footpath links up with many other walking trails including Culbone, home to the smallest church in England. One of the more unusual attractions at Porlock Weir is the submerged forest. At low tide, the remains of ancient tree trunks arise from the grey clay soil. These desiccated stumps are the last remaining evidence of a forest that, once upon a time, lay five miles inland.

A charming cottage in a wonderful spot where there is always something going on. We have been using Best of Exmoor for years and wouldn't consider booking an Exmoor holiday through any other company.

A great location. Lovely and warm with the wood burning fire.

A lovely break and a peaceful little place with a good pub and cafe

A truly wonderful spot... harbour in front (ever-changing with the tides) the sea behind, lovely views of the hills beyond (and lovely walks if you want them) and the comings and goings of the community. Sun at front and rear... always a spot to catch it. A very short walk to the pub, the cafe, a little Asian takeaway (fabulous), the hotel for a special meal or afternoon tea, or a woodfired pizza outside, and a couple of delightful art galleries. The cottage is a delight. It has a wonderful atmosphere. So cosy and comfy and the fireplace with woodburner is heaven. Comfy beds. We had a really magical week.

Fantastic location and very well fitted out cottage .

Loved our stay Western Cottage - have stayed in Porlock for many years and always wanted to be on the weir- the cottage was fantastic, everything has been thought of from hot water bottles and salt and pepper pots to the flood gates should they be needed - and we have had the most brilliant week away. Beds were extremely comfortable and we had even been left washing tablets for the washer. We are a family of 2 teens and they also loved every minute of this unique stay.
If there is a downside it’s to remember that with no real or reliable phone signal here the Wi-Fi in the cottage is poor and glitched constantly. Not a necessity by any means but we couldn’t reliably make or take calls which on occasion we needed to do.

My wife and I spent a fabulous 2 weeks in Western Cottage. The location couldn’t be better and the cottage is well equipped and extremely comfortable. Porlock Weir has a wide range of options for meals out (or takeaway) and is perfectly placed for walking the coastal paths and exploring further inland. We’ll be back!

Our second visit to Western Cottage and the magic has not worn off. It is superbly located right on the beach, which the children really enjoy. Having galleries to browse, a pub, hotel and food outlets so close by allows less use of the car. The walks, local and further afield, are always interesting. A fabulous spot - whatever the weather. The cottage is sensibly decorated and furnished. Nothing too fussy. Nothing cheap. Everything well thought through.

The location of Western Cottage is perfect, you can just sit outside and watch the world go by. The house was well laid out and having two parking spaces was great.

We had an incredible stay.
Everything was just fabulous.
Given the age of this stunning property and its location we can tell you we were warm, cosy and well rested as it really is a quiet spot.
The cottage was really well equipped, I like to cook and it had all we needed. We also had family join us for two nights and they were just as taken with all Western Cottage offered.
You can not beat the location for its unique and quirky spot and for all the beautiful surroundings. We parked up, walked everywhere to all we needed and just one trip to Porlock itself for some supplies from other local grocers.
Andrea, who we met on leaving was a delight and so kind and friendly.
We will be booking again and already are looking forward to it.
You took two and half years to happen to come round due to Covid closing the world to us, and you did not disappoint.
Thank you

We recently spent a week in Western Cottage. What a lovely cottage. It was very comfortable and big! It has recently been revamped and done to a high standard. I have never seen such a fireplace! Bedding and towels are of a high standard. We loved sitting outside watching the goings on at the harbour. I have to say David was so nice and helpful. Nothing was too much for him. Also the girls in the office were so helpful as I inundated them with calls for when the cottage was available! I can definitely recommend Western Cottage to anyone.

Western Cottage and it’s location - perfect!! Exceeded our expectations, with so much to see and do locally. Loved every minute of our stay! Thank you.

Western Cottage is in the most perfect location of Porlock Weir - one of our favourite places on Earth! The cottage itself is wonderful, we felt at home immediately and the straight access to the beach from the back garden was perfect for our children to explore. Local walks, crabbing, swimming (if you can brave the cold water!) and a pint or two in The Bottom Ship are all a must.

We were very pleased to have found this beautiful cottage via the website. The location was fantastic and due to the great weather we stayed in the area for the whole week. We would definitely like to return one day if it is still available for rent. We hadn’t been to Porlock Wier before and it was a delight when we arrived to see its uniqueness and visit the small outlets, hotel and pub.
Well done for keeping it so nice and for the flowers and bottle of wine.

Wonderful cottage and magical location. We had a terrific holiday, thankyou.
