About this house rental

Forget everything you knew about basements. This unit on the basement level in our house has been meticulously upgraded and includes 2 full bathrooms, one of which features a large tub with jacuzzi. An 85” smart TV completes the living room with a media center. The bedroom features brand new carpet, a small en-suite bathroom with shower, and a reach-in closet.

There’s a fully stocked kitchenette and a small and nifty dining area in the living room. No car needed to get around!

Everything listed here is private. The whole apartment, including the bathrooms, kitchen, living room, and bedroom are completely private to you and no one else will be accessing any portion of it.

** Please note this is a ONE-BEDROOM apartment. It *can* accommodate up to 4 people with 2 people sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room, but it could feel a bit cramped. We recommend 2 guests since it would be much comfier, but 4 is possible. Please bear this in mind before you book. If you're looking for room and comfort with 4 people, we recommend you book another property with 2+ bedrooms to have a more comfortable stay. This property is a "budget" option for 4 people. **

You will have a private entrance to your unit. There's a main entrance door to the basement, then you'll see a hallway, at the end of which is the door to your private unit. The entire basement level consists of your unit, the shared hallway, and our boiler room, which would be the only reason we might enter the basement level, which is rare and most likely will not happen during your stay. You'll have complete privacy inside your unit.

*** IMPORTANT!! ***
- We have brand new soft and plush carpet in the bedroom. Please, no shoes on the carpet. Thank you
- For your safety and ours, and as disclosed in the listing, we have a security camera in the front of the house and one inside the main basement door, outside your unit. We do not monitor them 24/7 but they do record footage of activity at the front door and the shared hallway in front of your private unit. If you feel uncomfortable with this, you may wish to find another property that better suits your needs
- No extra guests beyond the stated number in your reservation will be admitted. This number applies to children. If you show up with more people or unauthorized pets you'll be asked to leave without a refund
- Absolutely no parties or loud music will be tolerated at any hour of the day
- No smoking or vaping anywhere in the house. If we discover you've smoked in the property you'll be asked to leave and pay a $500 cleaning fee
- Check-in starts 4pm and checkout is before 11am
- Flush nothing but toilet paper down the toilet. Feminine products, wipes, paper towels, tissues, etc must go inside the BIN in the bathroom. If you flush anything that's not toilet paper, it may cause a clog and you'll be responsible for the repair.
- ONLY small vehicles (standard sedans, compact SUVs) are allowed to park in our parking spot. The spot may or may not be available during your stay. Please inquire if you'd like to reserve it and pay a fee or $25 per 24 hours from your reservation. Oversize SUVs, trucks, and vans MUST park on the street and you'll need to purchase parking permits yourself. You can purchase an overnight parking permit (11pm-7am) at a pay station outside the town hall at 6808 Park Ave, just a block away, for $5/day.
- You'll need to climb a flight of stairs each time you enter and exit the front door
- For your safety and ours, and as disclosed in the listing, we have security cameras in the front and back of the house. We do not monitor them 24/7 but they do record footage of activity at the front door and common areas in the shared hallway (never in your private unit)
- No extra guests beyond the stated number in your reservation will be admitted. This number applies to children. If you show up with more people or unauthorized pets they'll be asked to leave/be removed
- Absolutely no parties or loud music will be tolerated at any hour of the day. Quiet hours are 10pm-7am and are strictly enforced
- No smoking or vaping anywhere in the house, INCLUDING outside in the yard. If you're caught smoking you'll be asked to leave and pay a $500 cleaning fee
- Positively no oily or greasy liquids or solids down the sink drain. Please dispose of such items in the trash bin. Flush NOTHING BUT TOILET PAPER down the toilet. ***Feminine products, wipes (INCLUDING wipes that say "flushable"), paper towels, tissues, etc must go inside the BIN.*** This house is over a century old and has old plumbing. If you flush anything that's not toilet paper, it can cause a clog and you'll need to pay for the repair

###### FAQs #######
* Is there a train to Manhattan nearby?
- No. There's no subway in the state of NJ. The nearest PATH station is in Hoboken, 5 miles away. Buses are the easiest way to get around. No need to get put off by having to the the bus :) We guarantee it's the most scenic commuter bus ride you'll ever take. The bus stop is very close. It only costs $3.50 per ticket and can take you to Times Square in 25 minutes.

* How long does it take to get to ...... in NYC?
- It takes 3 minutes to walk to the nearest bus stop at 67th St & Blvd E. You can use this address to map your route: 6701 Boulevard E, West New York, NJ 07093. Please look it up on the map yourself how long it'll take to go from that bus stop to whatever destination you're trying to reach. It takes about 20 minutes to go straight to Port Authority/Times Square.

* Where's the bus stop and when do the buses run?
- The bus stop is at Blvd E & 67th St, a 2-minute walk from us. That is the exact location and the bus stop does not have a "name." Buses run 24/7 and more frequently during the day. Please review our guidebook on how to get to Manhattan as it contains detailed information and step-by-step instructions on how to get your bus tickets ahead of time.

* Can I stay for a month or longer?
- No. The maximum length of stay is 27 days.

* We're staying for 20 days (or another lengthy amount of time). Can we get a discount?
- No. We actually have no preference for longer term stays. Our pricing is dynamically adjusted and takes into account many factors including length of stay. If our rates are out of your budget, please note that we use a smart algorithm that adjusts pricing based on seasonality, demand, competition, occupancy rates in the area, among other factors. You're always welcome to check back in a few days or weeks to see if the price has gone down, if the listing is still available.

* We're staying 1 or 2 nights. We'll clean up after ourselves. Can we pay a lower cleaning fee?
- No. The cleaning fee applies to all reservations regardless of the length of stay. We understand it might appear unreasonable (we used to think the same before becoming hosts ourselves). We don’t clean the unit ourselves and pay a fee to a cleaning company that charges a flat rate per visit (If the unit is left in an exceptionally dirty state, a deep cleaning fee will apply and be charged to you after checkout, but it happens extremely rarely). All linens and towels must be laundered after every visit even if they were only used for one night. It’s a pass-through cost.

We hold ourselves to a high bar of cleanliness and cannot rely on a guest (you) to get the unit cleaned to a standard acceptable to us and our next guests and therefore risk a negative review from the guest after you.

The vast majority of guests, especially if they aren’t hosts or cleaners themselves, don’t realize people shed hair more than they think they do, food crumbs get scattered a lot more easily than they think they do, and dust and odors accumulate a lot quicker than they think they do ;)

The pricing you see on the booking page is the price you'd pay. Additionally, the "service fee" is paid to VRBO and we have no control over it. If the total cost is out of your budget, we wish you the best of luck finding a more suitable place for your needs :)

* Are there cafes, restaurants, grocery stores within walking distance?
- You bet! There are lots of restaurants, cafes, and shops within walking distance and we firmly believe it's wise to not have a car! :D Some local cafes you can walk to include Las Chicas Bakery on Blvd E (outdoor seating and great views of Manhattan skyline across the street), and Parker (6504 Park Ave). We don't have a grocery store the caliber of Whole Foods or Trader Joe's within walking distance (though both are a short drive away). Within walking distance we have many local bodegas where you can buy snacks, essentials, meat and produce. You won't get selections as large as you'd find at a Trader Joe's, but you should be able to find most basics you need. For a larger grocery store with more fresh produce, we have a Green Way Markets store 6-minute walk away (6411 Park Ave).

* All communication and payments must take place via VRBO. Any attempt to communicate off the platform will result in your account being reported.

This place is really enjoyable. We stayed here during our spring break in college and had a great experience. Communication was excellent and the place was clean and comfortable. We used the NJ Transit buses to get into the city every day and had no problems.

Great host, great neighborhood, great property. Easy and cheap to get into the city by bus. They are running like every 3 or 4 minutes and all of them go into Manhattan! Don't wanna go into the city? That's fine, because everything else is within a five min walk. Laundry facilities, restaurants, liquor stores, grocery stores, a 24 hour 7/11 convenient store and even a scenic park that has breathtaking views of the NYC skyline! We've all been in nice hotel rooms, but when a person's basement is 10 Times better and cheaper, it's a "no brainer". If your main destination is the Times Square area, save your money for all the pricey activities you'll be doing in the city. Most of the hotels in the city don't even offer a microwave or mini fridge but they're charging triple the price. Plus you'll be missing out on this beautiful neighborhood with the nicest people. It almost seems like they had a neighborhood meeting and told everyone we were coming so be extra nice and on their best behavior! Hahaha I'm joking, but in all seriousness, when you see a petite woman and her 7 year old daughter walking their tiny little dog at 11:30pm, you know you're in a safe neighborhood. I can't wait to visit again. I'm definitely staying at Szymon and Lily's place again if they're not booked up.

Great location for NYC
Great location for NYC
For the last few Summers, I have visited North Jersey for quick access to NYC. This recent trip, while not fun for me, (i.e. technically not a vacation and here to bring teen daughter home from Dance Theater of Harlem), I enjoyed my time here when I wasn't working and seeing patients on video telehealth and hauling dorm/ballet supplies out of Harlem. Okay, so this is a basement unit, one bedroom, two bath, open floor plan, with living room, and full sized kitchen, separate entrance down a short flight of steps. The unit was squeaky clean on arrival. Soft sheets, but do recommend a thicker bedding. Soap, towels and all toiletries were available if needed, as well as water. It's a great space for a small family. Parking is first come, first serve, just be aware Thursday is street sweeping day. The bathroom inside of the bedroom has an upright shower, and bathroom two has a soaking jet tub and shower combo. The living room has a large leather sectional, that is more sanitary than cloth, with multiple guests. The large flat screen tv, has high quality sound, and all the streaming channels. The neighborhood is very quiet, with a gorgeous park 1/2 block down the street, with the most incredible and unobstructed views of Manhattan's iconic skyline. Its truly breathtaking and a great photo op spot for families. Lily and Simon graciously helped me with my big dog on our last day, as we were so busy with telework and Dance Theatre of Harlems end of summer performance, that we had not had a chance to even go into Manhattan. They took my dog Teddy Pendergrass, along with their dog for a walk and to play, and gave me updates, while we finally got to enjoy the city on our last day. It was hotter than the devil's armpits my entire stay, but being a basement unit, it was nice and cold. Also, incredible restaurants in walking distance, to include Italian spot. A few recommendations, solely cosmetic: -Increased lighting in bathroom 1, especially if you're doing makeup. -Add some spider plants and greenery, for a pop of color. -Add vibrant wall art. As there was no art on the walls at all. Fun Andy Warhol style poster art would look gorgeous against the soft gray custom paint - Windows have no coverings, but for total privacy, would recommend frosted windows cling, which can be purchased at Home Depot. -Area rugs to warm up the tile floors outside of the bedroom. Wonderful stay, I was so stressed out from everything, I truly wish I had more time to enjoy NYC.

Peaceful and quaint
Peaceful and quaint
I had the opportunity to stay in this absolutely lovely apartment due to work in the area and I live over an hr away. The apartment is spacious and comfortable. Had a full kitchen and a surprise in the 2nd bathroom, that made me feel like I was staying in a luxury villa. The owner welcomed me in, showed me around and then left me to my own devices which was refreshing. 10 out of 10 will definitely stay again when I need to. Oh! If you do choose to stay with them, I advise you to spend the extra $10 on the parking spot that is for rent by the neighbors next door. So worth it to know you have a place to park after a long 12hr work day. Thank you so much for allowing me to stay in your home and use your parking space. It made work just a little easier knowing I didn't have an hr ride ahead of me when I was finished.
