Very beautiful hotel, staff was friendly, but wished they explained the amenities around the hotel. I had to figure it out myself by looking at other people’s reviews. Beverages at the mini bar fridge are not cold, wish it was colder, the drinks were lukewarm. I arrived earlier than check in time so decided to go to the cafe to grab a coffee, some staff said “no” and another said “yes, I can come in.” Super confusing and then it took forever for the waitress and the ordered coffee to arrive. The onsen in the room was amazing though.

Everything was amazing about this place. It is one of the most memorable places for my daughter and I with strongly recommended and it’s definitely a place you must see and vacation.
4.5
The hot spring hot tub is the best part of the hotel! Overall hotel is fine- nothing special for the price but for the personal hot spring tub, which was amazing. Food was ok, service was as expected. It’s no where close to downtown Kyoto but so many amazing sights to see around the hotel. If you want quiet - this is the place.
4.5
Staff and service great! A little overpriced for the rooms and unless you can book the special rooms the pictures can be deceiving! We were definitely not wowed by our room! Onsens were okay but nothing to brag about! And you have to pay extra to use the onsens … dinner at restaurants was great quality but overpriced! The reviews all show it to be very luxurious but it’s just a normal hotel….staff was very helpful and accommodating but the area is quite boring!

Not a 5* Hotel. Outdated rooms, Terrible or nonexistent Facilities. Restaurant closes at 10pm. No bar opened. Personal unable to understand basic English. Everywhere else in Japan, hotel personnel speaks very good English , at least in 5* Hotels. They kept changing temperature in the suite from 25C to 19C so the room after returning from 34degrees summer heat outside felt like freezer. Stay somewhere else. It feels more like dead property with end near. Personal was trying, but without training and basic English is hard to help.

Nice area, nice property. Food was terrible, service was ok but not the best.

Felt like valued guests in the property. Staff are available before the trip and during the trip for any requests, even if last minute.

Beautiful surroundings, quite location.

The view of the mountains and the Katsura River was worth the price of admission.

Beautiful room and food, upgraded room to room with its own hot spring. Amazing gardens.

The environment of hotel is green and fresh
The food of hotel restaurant is tasteful

A lovely property and amazing service. They go above and beyond.

Beautiful hotel and grounds but too expensive for what it is. The location is great and the grounds are beautiful, like a classic Japanese garden. But the rooms are WAY too expensive for what they are, which is quite small. The grounds of the hotel, breakfast area, tea room etc. could not be more stunning but once you are in the room itself it is very small and ordinary, not particularly luxurious and not enough value for what we paid. It is located in a beautiful area on the outskirts of Kyoto however, right on the river. You can have coffee in the morning or tea/champagne/sake in their team room and watch the boats on the river. UNESCO heritage sites and the famous bamboo grove are both a short walk away.

The beautiful gardens and this temple was reconstructed into this luxury hotel.

Overpriced. Would never in my lifetime pay again for this place for that price. Inflated due to the overwhelming number of tourists in the area. Hotel is fine if it was half the price

Exquisite hotel! Located in serene beauty, walking distance to Forrest, temples, shopping, restaurants, along the river. Absolute must stay here!

This traditional style looking Japanese home has elaborate gardens and beautiful natural settings of trees and flowers and rock paths that made this place so unique. The rock onsen was a great experience and the cocktail hour was superb! I brought my children in the lounge and they had fun too! There’s fresh fruit juices and appetizers for my children. I could sit and enjoy a great glass of red wine and a glass of champagne with appetizers. This hotel is modern on the inside with the original structure dated back 100 years or so ago! Beautiful setting, peaceful and serene. Next time I visit Kyoto I will stay here again but for a longer time. I loved it!

I really enjoyed my stay at Suiran. The location is beautiful and it is a convenient walk to many destinations. The room is very comfortable and well appointed. Breakfast was quite good. We stayed for six nights and they allowed us to order off menu so we could change up our breakfast choices. The happy hour was lovely, allowing one to sit out on the porch and enjoy a beverage. We took advantage of the in room spa services and had a positive experience. My only suggestion is that the lighting in the bathroom isn’t very good and a lighted makeup mirror would be a helpful addition.

Terrific stay at this hotel. Located on the outskirts of Kyoto (within a 20 min drive to downtown) was a positive for us. Some great natural sights (especially the bamboo grove, the river right outside, and the multiple cherry blossom trees throughout) made for a more serene setting.
Service was impeccable and our rooms were very comfortable and spacious.
Literally the only thing that was not top notch is the fact that you only have one restaurant to eat at on-site. Tons of places to eat nearby, but for some people that may be an issue.
We would definitely recommend Suiran and will stay here again.

Our stay at the Suiran was a very special and memorable experience, and our first introduction to Japanese people and culture. It represents the best of Japan from its friendly and helpful staff, to cleanliness, modern amenities and great food. We enjoyed the champaign over-looking the river and the Japanese tea ceremony, private onsen and rickshaw ride to the bamboo forest. Nothing was overlooked in our stay, the staff made us feel very special throughout our visit and I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Kyoto. They told us the 2 best times were May for the flowers and Nov for the fall colours but we loved it regardless.

One of the newer hotels in the area. Good location. Nice decors. Friendly service.

This hotel is overpriced and they charge for every single thing. The staff was extremely pleasant but was not able to be helpful for recommending restaurants and bars.
One should not pay more than 250 USD per night.
