Excellent stay at Quetzal lodge. Staff was friendly and helpful. Food at Colibris Restaurant was very good. Food presentation and taste was first class. Be prepared for rain and cooler temperatures, especially at night. Beds have plenty of blankets, heaters in rooms are mediocre, do not expect a hot shower.
We plan to come again!

Great place to stay! Hummingbird feeders and trails are amazingly for birding. The room is nice and warm at night.

A beautiful location on the side of the mountain with forever views.... The grounds and gardens are beautiful and birdy... The cabins are spaced apart, all with good views.... Plenty of blankets and a heater to ward off the chill at 8500 feet!!!!
The food was superb and the staff were gracious and efficient... A great spot!!!

They need better heaters. Our room never got warmer than 57 degrees. Room rate did not include breakfast. Not a good value for the price.

We stayed at this lodge because it was an easy drive off the main road and was close to Cero de la Muerte. The lodge staff were very helpful and the room, while spartan, was clean and comfortable. We had a very enjoyable dinner at the lodge and since we were going to be leaving very early they were kind enough to hard boil some eggs and toss in a few bananas to go.

The lodge had a great location on the mountain and our the cabin was charming and rustic with a lovely view. We enjoyed our walk in the trails. The room is fairly basic and small but we enjoyed watching the wildlife from it and the coffee supplied was amazing. We would recommend this place but to improve it we would suggest - a thorough clean, there were cobwebs in the room, the bed needs a new mattress and a thick duvet rather than multiples of blankets that you need to keep warm but are very heavy. Not a major problem but for the cost I would expect the room to be serviced daily which it was not. The restaurant had an amazing view and the humming birds outside were mesmerising. We ate at the restaurant both nights (there's no where else to eat unless you're prepared to drive 30 minutes). The food was OK, they supply a 3 course meal with a choice of main course from 2-3 options and it's value for money; not the best food we've had but not the worst. This was the only place we stayed at in Costa Rica where breakfast was not included in our package which, bearing in mind the room cost, was a little disappointing.

I loved the entire San Gerado de Dota area. There are many places to stay in the park but Paraiso is a nice place to stay for some peace and quiet (~30 min from the park) and is a little park of its own with walking trails to hike on. I loved the cabin setup and watching the birds, especially the hummingbird garden. Here, they are not afraid to get close to people! It is a cooler area which was a nice break from the hot and humid areas (here you get a heater instead of AC). It is a family-run business and the staff were helpful. Not many places to eat nearby so they do have a restaurant there for you. They offer a Quetzal tour for $20 but i was able to see the birds in San Gerado de Dota (early morning) and also along the walking trails at the lodge. Definitely the place to stay if you like to getaway from the touristy areas!

We had a lovely 2 night stay here. The family were attentive and helpful throughout our stay. The location is stunning. The breakfast options are good (but not included in price) and the dinner is fine, again not included in price.
Its a bit difficult to choose with no written menu - you get told the options at check in and have to choose in the afternoon.
We got there by bus. Its possible by MUSOC bus.
We enjoyed our stay.
