The convenient location was the best part of this hotel.
4.0 / 10.0
The room was larger than it appeared in pictures. Bed was comfortable and it was such a cool spot to stay. Walking distance from downtown life.
Parking was a nightmare. They charge you for parking which I find absurd when you’re paying to stay there. Parking should be included in the cost of your stay. Instructions in the email said you could park at the church on Saturday nights as long as you move before 7 a.m. and we left at 6:45. Word of advice just pay their $35 parking fee or you’ll wind up with a $68 parking ticket like we did.

The price was a little high, especially for the size of the room and lack of amenities, and we had to pay extra for parking. The bed was just a mattress on slats, and was therefore rather uncomfortable, although there were plenty of pillows. The valve in the shower wasn't working well, so most of the water went straight down the drain rather than through the showerhead. Cannot beat the convenience of the location, however, as we were there for a show at Seacoast Rep. It was also within very easy walking distance of our dinner reservation.

Parking was an issue at first, but it was resolved.

Everything was so lovely! This incredible human being helped us and was so accommodating! I really hope her name is Amy? She has ethereal stormy blue eyes! The point being — she was incredibly kind and helpful and made our experience in Portsmouth one that will most certainly not be our last! She has gained you a loyal guest!

Staff was wonderful and so helpful in directing us to the highlights of the city. The lobby was so inviting with snacks and coffee. Room was very comfortable

Contactless key app did not work when we returned to the room after dinner. Problem solved nicely after calling hotel rep. Morning person working in reception was not in good spirits, complained about not having help doing his job. Nice location, staff responsive otherwise.

No soundproofing between rooms. That could have been a problem but we had quiet neighbors. Parking is extra but easy to get in and out for a “city.”

Loved this charming place. Ended up being very close to all the quaint shops and restaurants in the area. Correspondence with them was stellar. Would definitely recommend!

Rooms small. Expensive but can’t beat the location or coffee!

It was confusing on how to enter the building , I did not realize I needed to enter a code , until I asked ( which the response was very quick ) however it would have been nice to know prior to arriving. Also there was a great little coffee bar with other hygiene items , however it would be great to also have utensils there as well
Thank you

Great location, comfortable accommodation

Ale House Inn is centrally located in down town Portsmouth, NH, walking distance from everything with dedicated parking for a surcharge which is nice! Sits on the second floor of an old warehouse with a small but cute communal room with coffe, tea, water! Room is simple but clean, quiet and nicely decorated. Beds are really comfortable and clean. Front desk is on site 9am-5pm but excellent communication off hours for whatever you may need, we didn’t meet anyone but got loads of assistance with recommendations and such! Room access is through a digital key but very straight forward process and finally is reasonably prices for location and time a year! Conclusion it a nice, cool spot if you need all the basics and great service without having to pay for the extra stuff we never use like gym, pool, 24/7 on site concierge! If you’re planning to spend most of yr time in yr bedroom this may not be the place for you but more for downtown weekend getaways! I would totally come back here! :)))

Really great central location.

We had a nice stay at Ale House. Very cool building, easy parking across the street, and great location to walk to everything downtown. Biggest drawback was the inability to control the A/C.... it was freezing in the room, and I had to sleep in sweats (in August). Also, the lighting was poor and in fact the main lamp had a burned out bulb. I would caution anyone who can't climb stairs, as that seems to be the only way to get into the building.

Clean, safe, comfortable. Location is excellent… restaurants and market square in very close proximity. Designated parking across the street is worth it.

A beautiful place to spend a few days.

Everything about the hotel is great except the check-in process….its all done on an app and the cell phone service wasn’t great, so I couldn’t download the app. ALSO, there is NO FRONT DESK so I couldn’t check-in with a human. This was problematic, especially when their hotel description says “Staff available from 9-5” but it was all virtual. What happened to the good ol’ fashion way of checks in at a front desk??

Portsmouth is a fun town and is a great base for day trips. The Ale House was perfect for that. It’s located steps from bunches of great restaurants and shops so even when not touring, there’s lots to do. It has character and is quite comfortable. Great place to stay.

Nice place, close enough to portsmouth to walk around. Hotel staff was nice and non-invasive.

We reserved a queen bedroom not facing the river and was good enough for exploring the town and spending the night on our Maine road trip. One tip: park your car overnight in the street if you can get an available parking meter. Check meter hours.

Aside from a slight glitch trying to locate and enter the building via a code it was a nice stay. Parking is an up charge so that would be nice to know in advance.

Overall really nice and unique hotel. Loved that it was right downtown and walking distance to so many things. Communication was easy with hotel staff. And while I overall liked the room, the bed was extremely uncomfortable, and my husband and I stayed 3 nights and both had 3 rough nights of sleep due to this.

We really enjoyed our time at the Ale House. Location, convenience and service (James was wonderful) were superior. It is a unique setup. Would definitely return.

Very unique. Did not see where it mentioned stairs only to entrance which is huge. Parking price is absolutely ridiculous especially for the off season. A lot of mold in the bathroom. Lobby area was neat.

Overall, the hotel was fine. It was weird to stay in a hotel on top of a movie theater, but kind of cool. I was disappointed that there was not a microwave on site and the coffee was hard to figure out and frustrating not to have someone on the premises to help. Nice location and easy to get to everywhere in the heart of Portsmouth. 🙂

We loved the proximity to everything that Portsmouth had to offer. Great location!
