Very nice experience. Comfortable, clean hotel. Nice relaxed atmosphere and good friendly service. Cozy lobby bar.

This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast is amazing: plenty of food choices and Finnish specialties including the Karelian pie (and veggie option of that even). The hotel is modern, clean and tidy, with maintaining a hint of their prison history. The associated part of the building is almost a community: a gym, a spa, bakery, restaurants, shops and a funicular going downhill to the river. Highly recommended, and definitely will stay there when I visit Turku next time.

The hotel had an interesting history as being a notorious prison.

Once was a prison for people awaiting trial. Lots of character. The have done a lovely job of vonverting it into a hotel. Rooms smallish by North American standards but all in all, a good place to stay.

Great staff. We arrived at 8 am from an overnight cruise from Stockholm and they let us check in. So nice. Everyone here has been fantastic at this unique hotel.

Amazing hotel with beautiful and clean room and comfy beds. The Soda maker and coffee maker in the room were a nice plus and the discount hotel guests get from the spa was a nice surprise. Staff were super nice. Thanks for a great stay!

Beautifully remodeled hotel in an old prison. clean, comfortable. Exceptionally helpful staff who helped us navigate Turku.

Lovely modern conversion from previous use as a prison. We had a balcony room which was large and very well appointed. We didn’t get to try breakfast as we were leaving on an early ferry but I’m sure it would have been as good as the rest of the hotel.

Kokemus kokonaisuudessaan mieluinen.

The hotel rooms are great, new, clean.
Breakfast is very average.
Dinner was horrible. Really bad food and service. The dinner card had just 2 main dishes, started, Toast Skage, camevafter on minute. The toast was cold and totally burnt. Disgusting for a 15eur starter. Burger was too salty. Coffee was undrinkable. Sorry, i dont know how this hotel gets its high rating.

Hotel Kakola is situated in an old jailhouse, which was built in 1890. Rooms are new, modern and stylish. They have many different room types, even cell rooms and a real boat suite.
We had a family room (22 square meters) for four people. We had a double bed and a barred bunk bed in our room. The bunk bed is big enough even for adults. On the other hand it is funny and safe for young children, because it is possible to lock the barred door so that children don't drop.
We had an underfloor heating, a very efficient air-conditioning system, a safety deposit box, a Lavazza coffee machine, a Mysoda sparkling water maker, a hair dryer and free WiFi in our room.
The breakfast buffet was very good and breakfast time was long enough (7 am - 11 am on weekends). The lunch and dinner restaurant is very good, too. Besides, their summer terrace is very nice and peaceful.

Fantastic place to stay, which sounds odd since this was once a prison. The architects and designers deserve an award. Tha public areas, surroundings and rooms are just amazing. Well worth a visit.
Improvement areas: Signage and TV operation & channels - all Finnish, despite button Language that brings you to Finnish only. No BBC or other international news channels. That was a bummer. Lucky that casting was working flawless. Breakfast a bit basic, fruits and yoghurts are missing, yet BF was included in the roomrate.

Very nice hotel but absolutely terrible pillows. They were like garbage bags filled with air. Impossible to get comfortable. This is such a shame as everything else was totally fine.

Superb balance of keeping the former prison spirit and detail, but with modern hotel luxury. Loved the details such as blueprint curtains and original window bars on bathrooms.
Breakfast room was dark and buffet offering a bit lacklustre, particulalry when the other aspects set the bar(s) so high.

I've stayed in a dozen hotels across Finland while working this year and this one was my favorite. The beds and pillows were amazing and the cages in the family room made for a fantastic touch. The restaurant was delightful and our waiter treated our kiddo like an adult instead of an inconvenience which we found in other places. I was also able to work quietly without interruptions. Great location if you want to stroll to the Castle then back along the river. Would stay here again the next time I'm in Turku!

The room and the hotel were fantastic. Extra points for possibly the best bed and pillows that I have slept in.Few minus points: When you enter the room when it is dark, it is very difficult to spot the card holder for turning on the electricity. There should be an entrance light that should turn on automatically as you open the door.During breakfast there were many things that had just run out at the same time. The cucumber bowl was near empty, coffee milk jar was empty, the orange juice had just run out... many coincidenses at the same time. But everything was fresh and very tasty.

Great stay in Kakola, good value for money when compared to the larger chains located in the city center. New, clean and well designed rooms. Nice breakfast. On the downside the "dark" restaurant and the location when coming to visit the city by foot (in bad weather). But can be recommended when priced at sub 100€

We love this hotel, it was our 4th staycation in Turku and Hotel Kakola. Its unique, friendly, cosy and in a beautiful area, within a walking sistance from beautiful Turku. Walk alongside river Aura, it’s not far from the centre, and the riverside is lively and beautiful, during all seasons.
