Excellently situated on the high street. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room and facilities were ideal. My only criticism of the room is that the lighting could have been better. There were lots of lamps but they did not give enough light.

The room was spotless and comfortable but cold. The evening staff were excellent and drinks reasonably priced. The fire alarms were off intermittently overnight, no staff were on reception and apparently the panel has been broken for a month. The morning staff looked exahausted and one woman offered our breakfasts by saying poached eggs instead of good morning which one of you ordered poached eggs - little things matter

Central location, friendly team on site, cosy room, shower hot but limescaled head, good breakfast
3.8
Lovely comfortable rooms. Long wait to be served breakfast!

Have stayed here several times. Good choice
3.8
good location, friendly staff, smart TV and high speed wifi.

Ok check in. I E cold room. Old School quilt, no down comforter in sight. Stone hard pillow.
Breakfast. Sweaty cheese, cheap ready cut bread, absolutely no cut vegetables. They made eggs. And a full British breakfast. That’s not for me and the rest of the world.
No umbrellas at front of house. Dirty British wall to wall carpets.
They had an ok bar with very strange wine glasses.

Good rooms. Parking is chargeable.

Very pleasant stay - old quirky hotel right in centre of Colchester. Parking was fine just behind the hotel. Very friendly staff and comfortable room. My only comment would be that the stairs are quite steep leading up to the top so request a room on first floor if steep flights of stairs may be a concern - but for me it was a great stay and would return next time in Colchester. Thank you

No lift and lots of stairs. Air con in the room welcome.
3.8
No cleaning facilities in the room, no umbrellas in reception, parking charge, window didn’t open in the room and really nosy
3.8
Friendly staff, comfortable room, excellent breakfast. Cannot fault the Hotel itself.
One small criticism would be the information about parking is far too brief. Unkess you are already familiar with the car parking situation in Colchester Town Centre and the App itself, the system generated email did not offer any useful assistance whatsoever. Unsurprisingly the car park was half full, as people like myself used more easily accessible sites (and with far simpler payment methods)

When i cam down for breakfast there was a room filled with customers, and only 2 members of staff servicing. As they were both busy they did not notice that i had been waiting at the entrance to the room as the instructions clearly indicated. In the end because of waiting for a long time i decided to find a seat. In that time a waitress asked for my breakfast order, but explained that it would be longer than 15min. As i had already waited i was running late for work. So I only requested coffee. Despite paying for breakfast. I did not have time to discuss this at check out because of the delays to the start of my day

Hotel staff are great. I've stayed at both properties in Colchester several times and everyone is so helpful and kind. Rooms are adorable. Bed is super comfy. Breakfast is good. I love that they are right in the middle of High Street and close to everything. Highly recommend staying here!

Authentic and long history.
3.8
Not such a great nights sleep with all the street noise but otherwise good.
3.8
Room was modern and clean. TV fitted to the wall in slightly odd position. Food service stopped at 8:30pm and the numerous instructions re parking didn't seem to make parking any easier, ended up with long walk up the hill to hotel and £10+ spent on parking.

Terrific
3.8
All aspects very good except;
Car parking terrible(no spaces) and cost £9.50 a day.
Insufficient staff in bar, so takes 30 minutes to get served.
3.8
Good location, clean room, only complaint service at breakfast was slow

I am from Suffolk met my sister from London here and we stayed overnight in this lovely old hotel. We had a lovely evening meal, breakfast and afternoon tea and the service was very good and the staff were all very nice and friendly. Thank you all. We will definitely return.
3.8
Beautiful hotel. The rooms have been upgraded to a very high standard. Very tasteful.
Only negative is that the walls are very thin so we could hear conversations next door but because of the age of the building that’s to be expected.
3.8
The place has real character and was a pleasure to stay in. Breakfast was very tasty and the staff we met were all very pleasant.
3.8
Hotel was lovely. So quirky and trendy. Beds comfy too! We didn't stay 4 breakfast as had to take off. Car park at the rear, which was handy. Only thing was, our vehicle was broken into during the night and things stolen.
3.8
Just stay for a night, because we have early morning appointments. New room look very nice and clean

Always a lovely place to stay, place is clean, well kept and the staff are all brilliant, special thanks to the young man who took my luggage up for me!
Food is excellent, service is excellent. They have refurbished since my last stay and it looks great. Thumbs up from me!

Room was okay, a little overpriced. Was going to have dinner at the restaurant (which had 1 table on a Monday night) stood in the restaurant area with my colleague for a while no one came, none of the servers who were standing at the bar acknowledged us, so we walked out and went elsewhere for dinner.

The Hotel was lovely and clean. Has a real unique feel to the place, with fantastic decor throughout and smelt amazing in all areas. Our room was clean and all facilities very good. The breakfast was really nice and of good quality. The checking in was below what you would expect as staff were not very knowledgeable about rooms or what services were provided and that was the only let down for our stay. Car Parking was £9.50 which we were not aware of until arrival and do think if you are a patron at the hotel this should have been included in room price.
We would recommend The George though.

High St frontage stay, noisy all through night

Great rooms and facilities. Loved the decor. Pretty unique. Good choice for breakfast (English and continental). Very clean. Central position (shops/restaurants/castle/ other local tourist attractions). I would definitely book this hotel again if i was visiting Colchester again. The only negative is the small parking (limited spaces) behind the hotel which is public. You have to pay extra (just under £10 for 24 hour) and can't pre-book it.

This is a great hotel for those who like the nostalgia of a very old building, and the food is good!
Two of the staff were EXCEPTIONAL- Kelly and Antony!! This place is very lucky to have them!!
The location of this hotel is very convenient, except for if you want to catch a taxi. The taxi drivers have decided that they will only take cash, which goes against their licensing. If they’re found out they can get in trouble. I am in the process of writing a letter of complaint.
I did finally find one company that was honest, PANTHER CABS (COLCHESTER) LIMITED, the driver Steve was wonderful.
I would recommend this hotel. Nothing fancy but has such charm!

The hotel was nice, although I wouldn’t recommend eating there our meal was very disappointing the chips tasted like they’d been cooked hours before and were inedible.
The main issue was access to the car park and the incorrect instructions on the hotel’s website. After a long drive to Colchester we then drive around for an hour trying to access the car park. Eventually got through to the hotel who informed us to avoid the cars prohibited sign and to access via the high street. Luckily there was one space so we could park after that horrendous nightmare otherwise we would also have probably been fined by the council. So having spent who knows how much on extra petrol, plus generally going crazy trying to follow directions on a pdf that took you around Colchester’s one car wide backstreets, we were offered nothing not even a drink by way of goodwill.
To be honest the whole experience was horrendous. I’d avoid booking here.

This is my 4th visit whilst on business during the week. Really nice modern hotel that has a great restaurant and bar area.
No issues sleeping as the hotel is nice and quiet in the week, but I can imagine that some rooms on the front can be quite noisy at weekends.
Food is really good at the restaurant and for breakfast in a morning.
Rooms are modern, clean and comfy. The showers also have good water pressure too.
Overall, a really great stay!
3.8
Good location avoid front rooms in hotel as high street very noisy at night, parking expensive. Lots of choices for breakfast
3.8
Parking is a problem. Checkin staff not friendly
3.8
Great hotel and great location,

Had a great stay.

Great hotel, very clean and good service. Brilliant refurbishment!

Whilst we appreciated the modern technology in the bedroom we would have liked some instructions and wi-fi that worked. And also more than one chair in the room.Bar,lounge and restaurant were comfortable and busy.Upstairs laundry area always open with piles of used and unused bedding in the hall area not a good look.Staff very friendly and efficient.

An amazing Tudor Grade 2 listed building in the main street of Colchester. There is restaurant serving al la carte evening meals. It also has a lively bar which we found rather noisy on Friday & Saturday evening, but this was not audible in our 2nd floor room. Breakfast Buffet menu was a little disappointing as no fresh fruit was on offer, except a few apples one morning.
The Hotel is an easy walk to all the historic sites in Colchester & it was an easy journey to Constable Country
