The breakfast definitely needs improving i would even pay a little more for better breakfast and lastly bed bugs were in our bed we have bites around our body at first we thought it was something else until we got a second opinion.

Santo Tomas Hotel is an OASIS in the city and is beautiful and well-kept and the staff is so kind! The city around is walkable with many small shops in every direction. The parks downtown are lovely and have beautiful flowers and San Jose is filled with public art.

Great hotel and well maintained plus a jacuzzi hot tub on site. Breakfast was very good

The property & amenities are wonderful. I have stayed at several hotels in San Jose and Santo Tomas is by far my favorite. I will be returning here each time I visit San Jose in the future. The rooms were well maintained and very clean. The complimentary breakfast was delicious, and I thoroughly enjoyed the hot tub and pool. But by far the best part of Santo Tomas is the staff! All staff members were exceptionally kind and responsive. Special thanks to Jeremy and the hotel’s owner, Thomas, for being so attentive and helpful. I would highly recommend a stay at Santo Tomas!

I have stayed here a couple times before The owner and staff are amazing. It’s a great location close to everything downtown. I recommend this Hotel to anyone traveling to San Jose

Not a bland corporate hotel, 12 ft ceilings, antique style

It was a good hotel, however my room was next to the main hallway and I was woken up often by people walking up and down

Lovely hotel.

Santo Tomas is a lovely historic hotel. The owner was so helpful and upgraded us to a balcony room free of charge when we arrived. I would definitely recommend staying here it's a very central location and it has a great Vietnamese restaurant across the street called Cafe Rosa.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Clean and well cared for

It is a safehaven of beautiful tranquility inside a large sketchy city. The complimentary breakfast puts expensive American hotel breakfasts to shame ... try some lizano salsa on your eggs and rice. Only two blocks away from the casino which has a very nice, safe, delicious restaurant on the corner. Great for couples. Great for being solo and having a respectful guest over ... security is very good. I love the jacuzzi with the slide into the pool. It is my second visit there and I look forward to the next.

Very charming small hotel. Staff were attentive and friendly. I wouldn't want to walk the street alone at night, but i felt safe (with reasonable precautions) walking alone during the day.

Excellent start to our Costa Rican adventure. Room 35 was at the top, back of the hotel, so nice and quiet. Room was large, clean and the bed was comfortable. Lots of areas to relax. Shared fridges and microwaves if required. Safe car parking. Excellent breakfast. Just round the corner from a free guided walking tour and many nearby things to visit.

Great hotel, found by chance nearby the bus station. It's an old style house converted so has a very cozy feeling and actual rooms, made of brick and cement, etc. The surrounding area is great during the day but is shady at night, though relatively safe.

Vintage style. Great staff (except for one grumpy one), Area felt a little sketchy tho mostly just urban. Convenient location and parking (which otherwise is an issue in the city center). No a/c. Windows didn't open.....fire safety issue? Nice pool/hot tube/courtyard.

Quiet, rustic.

In a very central location, just a few blocks from Central Avenue
I am told by others it is not the safest area at night, but I had no issues as a single male gringo during my stay
The room is quite basic, but it is quiet, so you can get a good night’s rest
There is a gym and a pool you can use. Also there are a number of parking spots available. Best get in touch with the hotel to secure a spot!
Thomas is a good host

The hotel is interesting with period details. Room was clean and spacious. Staff were helpful. Breakfast although basic has freshly cooked eggs. I would recommend as a good stopover in San Jose.

Very nice property. Very secure. Private parking area. Felt comfortable walking around the area.

Affordable, clean and amazing location. The typical breakfast was excellent. We also enjoyed cafecito on the rooftop terrace. While some reviews stated that the location was sketchy, we never felt unsafe. On the contrary, we felt very secure and comfortable when walking around the area. Just use common sense and you’ll be fine.

My stay at Santo Tomas was very enjoyable. The staff were so kind and helpful. I really enjoyed the small gym and my daughter really loved the pool/hot tub.
I would definitely stay again!

A quiet oasis in the bustle of San Jose. Walking distance to major attractions and restaurants. Lovely helpful staff, good breakfast and loved the pool to cool off

The property is Ok, it was just a couple things that was of concern the room I was given in the back of the property the hallway light didn't work making it difficult at night with my 🗝️, also telephone in the room was for display.

Really close to city center and yet it’s all enclosed with locked parking and pool. There’s lots of cool sitting areas.

The hotel is well located since it is within a walking distance from central SJO. Atmosphere in the hotel is excellent as well as service.
Yes - the breakfast could be larger or the pool bigger, but I always assess locations from a price/quality perspective and stress cleanliness and security. And from these points of view, Santo Tomas is a first rate choice. Highly recommended. I would go again.

Good hotel for short stay. Wouldn't stay more than 2 nights. Not sure about area, as we didnt feel very safe there. Staff very nice, place super clean.
The only thing I really didnt like was missing ceiling on the bathroom. It felt like toilet is in the room,no privacy. Very basic, only 2 water glasses available in the room. Good breakfast in the price you pay

The hotel is ok, but its on a sketchy street. The walk to the central street is ok in the daylight but limit. Need to use Uber for all deplacements.
No air conditionning and the window dosent open so it smells musty.
Only 2 chairs in the pool area so very limited.
The staff was nice but I would’nt go back.

We arrived exhausted in the middle of the night and ended up lugging our 100lbs of luggage up two flights of stairs to get to our room without assistance being offered. Accommodations are adequate, breakfast is cooked to order kinda (2 options), I ordered option 1, the traditional Costa Rican with eggs (fried), rice & beans as I remember…I received scrambled eggs and toast.
The neighborhood left us feeling a little nervous, particularly after the Uber driver told us not to walk the street. The structure has a cute courtyard with pool and eating area, secluded from the street.

Great location in a period building, this is notable as there don’t seem to be many! Only stayed one night but would have been happy to stay longer.

Staff and owner were very hospitable. Everything was as described and expected. We were able to check in early without a problem.
Due to the location, it is quite noisy because of traffic. Parking was difficult because it is behind a garage door on a busy street. However, once we figured out how to get in, parking was secure and we could walk anywhere from the hotel. Great place for a city stay.

Very nice and friendly owner and staff!

we only stayed one night as the area around the hotel was not safe. There was a prostitute bar right across the street
4.0 / 10.0
As tourists, we felt this hotel was in a very bad part of downtown. It wasn't a very nice area, we didn't feel very safe, and there was a prostitute outside the hotel in the early morning when we had to check out. There is a locked gate to get in & out, and barbed wire along the top perimeter, but we still didn't feel safe coming & going after dark.
Parking also wasn't easy. The front desk employee said she would open the gate for us to bring our vehicle in, but she didn't, so it was a huge hassle to to get parked. Staff weren't overly friendly or very helpful.
The hotel itself is very old, so therefore just not very nice all around. Our floor looked very old & dirty, room was very tiny. There is a gym and pool though!!!
Wouldnt recommended for the money we paid.

Lovely stay, convenient to explore downtown. Service was spot on. It was reasonably priced and the breakfast had choices and was nice and hot - cooked for you not a buffet.
10.0 / 10.0
Great stay as always, this was our fourth time here. Jeremy on the front desk is a star. We had a great room on the first floor, much larger than the last time (which was nice). The pool is a wonderful bonus. Breakfast is always great. Not the most upscale of neighhoods but great location just a 10 minute walk to the 7-10 or Peme bus stations.
